Love these quads, simple and torquey perfect for trailriding. Wish they would start makingthem again and incorporate some built in storage compartments in the chassis.
You can still buy them new, they just halted production until the supply gets used up. They did a similar thing in 2011 and halted production until 2013.
When the 400ex first come out my brother Matt bought a new one off the floor. We drove everywhere looking for one they were going super fast at the dealers. We had a buddy port the head (theres ALOT of power hogging out the ports), ct cam with stock valve springs, ct exhaust, and a different cdi that raised the limiter. Bored it next over in size with a high compression piston when the stock junk carb boot ripped and sucked Florida sugar sand. The mottor ripped. He lined up on the gate at okeechobee thundercross next to some tiny gurl on a k&k sponsored atv bike at the FTR mx race the weekend before the gncc. She got the jump, but my brothers rig held her half a bike length behind the entire way down the straight, and he outweighed her by atleast 70lbs. We knew it was fast but didnt really know how fast until that gate that day. It was night and day different than a stock 400. He sheared the shift shaft at the case, destroyed the supposedly super strong cast aluminum swingarm in 2 months, and blew a front frame tube on that bike too. We had the frame put back together and reinforced by sycamese. The shift shaft was a bitch he split the cases himself, twice on that one. He was an A class type rider. Back then nobody was porting the head lol. Super reliable motor even with the mods (minus the shift shaft and carb boot). We changed the oil every 20-25 days he was using maxima 4stroke oil, and put an oil cooler on it. Shoulda had the crank rebalanced to try and take some vibration out, but the crank , rod, and bearings never went.
@@jonathancartersr2763 it was great times. Alot of good stories. We traveled all over the state racing ftr, woods and mx out of pickup trucks. Had a buddy with an air conditioned trailer we'd meet on Friday night at the woods races. Ftr quad class was huge. He had to qualify for the mx races there was always too many quads for the gate. We'd hit Thundercross for open track night for practice and he had some local 3 digit dirt bike pros he'd practice with. My bro got hurt and that was the end. Moto is a brutal sport.
these 400 Honda engines are monsters...from factory the might be soft as hell, but man...you start tuning them up, and you will be discovering some huge power out of it! I know people with 400X that spins around 55-60hp to the wheels without increasing the displacement...some carb mods, filter, exhaust, head cams and ignition and this engine freaking rips...

I love my Honda 400ex and 300ex big bore kit T4 Pro Circuit Exhaust itp Holeshot racing tires they are wicked they pull hard as hell if you haven't rode in a while and you ride your gonna feel it later
Mine has a lexx exhaust with the quiet core out 1 3/4” spacers in front 2” in back with 18” tires in back and 21” in the front then a alba racing front bumper it can keep up to a ltr 450 on small tracks
BudyBudWeiser the 450r and 400ex have different plastics. The 450r has a skinnier seat ( like a dirtbike seat) and the 400ex has a wide gas tank into a wider seat. Also, if i remember correctly, the 400ex back fender and seat are all one piece and on the 450r theyre not.

VisualLife i feel like the point of failure would be at the wheel studs. Although ive never seen them snap or anything. Ive never ran them bet seen people who have.
Our rzr rs1000 can't keep up with my stock-exhaust can 400 on our track. In a straight line they're slow but elsewhere they make up for it. Much like the 125 for bikes the 400ex/trx is an excellent training tool for still learning but adult frame riders. Enough power to get through things but if you want more (and it's stock) you'll have to get creative and muscle the hefty beast around.
I guess I don't understand why someone who is willing to sink the finances into a 400 like this wouldn't just buy a 450 to start with and add from there.
That's pretty solid feedback. I ride a kfx450r and luckily that does have reverse and it's been fairly headache free for me. I've got a friend quad shopping right now and he's back and forth o 400 vs 450. 90% of the time we just ride for fun but when the gncc series are around our area I told him he'd want a 450 over that 400 not that we race for the title, just fun but I wasn't sure if he would be satisfied with the performance of a 400. Personally I've never ridden one so my frame of reference has been limited to 450s and Raptor 660/700
in short, the 400x is the AK47 of quads. They can take stupid amounts of punishment across the whole spectrum. From beginners beating on the clutch, to advanced riders winding out the motor and hitting sketchy jumps. Best part is, there is so many out there that the parts department is very reasonable. Another benefit of these add-ons is for the older generation ho still want to act like kids. I weigh 100lbs more from the day i graduated highschool and bench press 200lbs more. For a guy like me who still likes to rip it, have a little more boost on a reliable platflorm along with some extra stabilization as now the ride has become more top heavy all works out. juss my 2c
+dan mcdonald Well put. Put a slip on exhaust, open up the air box and jet it and add a Sparks racing timing advance flywheel key and you have a faster, torquier machine that's bulletproof on the trail.
For trail riding the z 400 , kfx400, or 400 ex are great the kfx and z 400 Are liquid cooled as well ... The engine performance in stock form is not comparable to a 450 , the 400 s dont rev as high , amd lack the power ... You would find your self searching for a 6th gear on a big straight against a 450 ... This can be accomadated for with different mapping allowing the 400. To rev higher ... And with all thw aftermarket you could build a track ready 400 and with a good rider would hang in there and possibly get a W ... But you would be putting every ounce of physical effort into it , to get it done ... Would be good for local races amd having fun though for sure the 400 s used to be the big deal
