In 1999, Honda changed the game and broke the drought of sport ATV's when they released the legendary TRX 400EX. While most machines need a couple years to iron out the flaws, Honda and the rest of the world knew they had a winner in this quad after it not only conquered the Baja 1000, but won. Since then this quad hasn't had any major changes except for an added reverse gear and body redesign in 2005 and again in 2008. With so many of these machines out there you have a ton of options in the aftermarket and in this video we show you everything that we added to this machine to give you some of the ideas of what you can do to your TRX 400EX to really make it your own.

Suspension is super important on a 400ex if you want to go fast because of the lack of power. If you have a suspension that can soak up the bumps it allows you to keep it pinned more often instead of letting off and struggling to get back up to speed. I personally ran Lonestar long travel a-arma with elke stage 4 shocks front and back with a Lonestar rear axle. Its been a good while since I had mine so I dont even know what is available. CT Racing 426 kit with stage 1 cam and the older 450r fcr carb was an amazing combination with the suspension because you had the power of a LIGHTLY modded 450, and if you had your whits about you then you could run them down on an XC race. Like I said, suspension is still key so you can crash through the rough stuff and spend less time trying to accelerate because the 450's will definitely do that better. Do those mods with a good steering stablizer, nerf bars or at least heel guards, and frame, a arm, and swing arm protection and you can be a very competitive racer. Oil cooling is another important thing to think about, and I also ran aluminum scoops to funnle more air to the engine because its air cooled. As far as intakes and exhause I ran a white bros exhaust and I experimented with various foam filters and had good success. Tires I liked the Maxxis gncc tires and to save a little cash I ran reinforced rims in the back and bead locks up front with tireballs in front and rear to prevent flats. It was a great machine, not the most powerful, but very competitive and lots of fun for all levels of racers/riders. In all I did have about $10,000 in the machin, which included $2,800 for the cost of buying the machine itself. Maybe I should have gotten a 450, but either way I had a good time and that is what is most important at the end of the day.

Oh this takes me back. I bought one of the yellow 2001 models when they were first released in the summer of 2000. I rode that thing all the time, loved it. Then in 2012 some jackass decided they needed more than I did.

I also bought a brand new yellow one in 2001. I rode that thing DAILY for 13 years. Thousands of pavement miles too. I never did a thing but change the oil, brakes, and tires. Absolute bulletproof. Best machine I ever had. When I sold it after 13 years it was smoking just a little bit and prob needed a top end. I could almost shed a tear thinking about watching it go. I’d like to find it and have it back
Also I dunno why people underestimate the speed?? I dunno if something changed after but my 2001 would do 76mph with me on it at 200 pounds. Radar checked by state trooper 😂 ( and gps). Maybe they lowered the gears after 01 I dunno. Mine was factory stock accept a white bro’s slip on pipe

@@JohnnyRebKy Hey man that's great to hear about the longevity of your quad. I bought a 2008 400 EX (in white ) in March of 2011. Everybody wanted the new 450 R and the 400's were just sitting on the showroom floors and the price was getting lower and lower and I finally pulled the trigger on it before it got sold out from under me. I'm a dirt bike guy but have always wanted a quad and I knew I made the right decision. I actually prefer the 400 over the 450 R because it's so bullet proof and maintenance free. It's got plenty of power as far as I'm concerned. I always rode 2 strokes back in the day (I still do) but I always had respect for the Honda XR's and the 400 EX has the same engine as the XR 400. I'm leaving it stock too. I've only added 450 R front shocks (really nice upgrade) a Rox dash plate, handle bar risers, and the poly shock covers that keep the dirt out. Couldn't be happier. My stock battery just died over the weekend. I can't believe that it's lasted 12 plus years. I'm never getting rid of that thing. Thanks for posting that. It only confirms I made the right decision and bought the right quad.

I have built many many of these machines... the best for motor setup I have ever seen is a 426 kit 11.1 (93 gas) stage 1 cam 450r carb with a full exhaust and uni filter and upgraded oil cooler and fins.. it will run with a stockish 450s

    • @jbird1173

I ran a 416 for years and it would eat 440s alive. I raced it through the hybrid years into the days of the 450s. It was always competitive. Eventually the engine was yanked out for a Yamaha 450 bike engine. In my mind the 400ex chassis is still the best ever built.

    • @tommywallbanger

The 250 would be fine. They used to make a 300 back in the day, like late 90's. I rode one once and it had enough power and I weighed like 185 lbs back then. But if you buy a 400 EX you will not be disappointed and will have it for a long long time whereas you might grow out of a 250. If you get a 400 and decide you don't want it anymore you will be able to sell it no problem. There are tons of after market parts for the 400 too so you can do whatever you want to it, or leave it stock like me. Good luck with whatever you decide.

There's a lot more general maintenance on the 450r, but its so easy to work on. My buddies have 400's and I think I spend more time working on theirs because of the mentality that they're so reliable, that they just run them till something breaks. And it's usually not an easy fix..... I spend a few hours after each day out at tracks or trails going over my R and haven't had any big problems that I couldn't fix. And the look on my friends faces when I let them ride it, or the disappointment when they can't keep up is well worth the time I spend with her as I mod and fine tune or just maintenance.

TRX450r front shocks are too stiff on the 400 unless you are a Big guy (200+ lbs) . Front Resivor shocks from a Kawasaki 400 or 450 ( 2008+ ) work great with out re valving them and Yamaha YFZ 450R front shocks work well .. ( they require some mild grinding to narrow the upper mount like the TRX450 ones .. and need to be old enough that they are not too tall I think the change happened in 2013/2014 ?? but am not 100% sure .. ( i currently have fox podiums all around pulled from a Polaris Predator along with custom mounting brackets and +2" houser arms.. Another nice mod is braded brake lines in the front and a pair of dual piston front calipers they fit direct from the 450r or all the other major competitors Yamaha , Kawasaki , Suzuki ..

Trust me if you took one ride on a stock 400 EX swapping out the front shocks is a no-brainer. I referred to them as pogo sticks too. If you get on the gas and hit any bumps your knees just smack the gas tank. I bought used 450 R shocks and have them on the softest settings but I am right around 200 pounds. I've heard that the Yamaha YFZ 450 shocks are the best ones to use but I got a good deal on my 450 R's on ebay. I didn't even try to sell my stock 400 EX shocks on ebay because who would want them?

it is sporting the Sideways Utility type engine .. they are quite torquey .. by the engine design and are also simple to replace the topend on .. if ever needed .. they are quite reliable .. the best advice i can give is to annually or by annually .. check the rear differential fluid .. and if you like to get muddy .. make sure the small hose running from the rear differential to the air box .. is connected and intact.. ( im sure these are fine now .. but eventually the rubber line will get brittle and if it is off and you go in deep water,, the water will enter through the vent hole and the diff lube will float out on top . . a new differential is quite pricey 500 or more .. if 10 years from now the worst happens .. rebuild the differential before the axle play gets crazy and .. it can be a inexpensive fix .. bearing and seal kits are under 100.. .. lots of folks ride until the quad will not .. by then the diff housing is garbage.

416 big bore and a cam. More mid range and top end. Not the 440. 440 heads leak oil and it's a low end build. Big gun full exhaust, open air box. Larger oil tank. Roll design Lobo 2 a arms. Rpm axle. Roll design swing arm +1 . Roll steering stem. Set of elka shocks. Renthal fat bars Omf scallop bead lock wheels 8 inch rear 10 front. Maxxis rzr tires or itp holeshots. Braided brake lines. Ac propeg nerf bars. Ac bumper. And a set of plastic skid plates. The aluminum gouges and gets caught up more than the plastic. Stainless swing arm bolt. Stainless tie rods from ricky stator, they wont bend. And oury waffle grips. Gusset the frame behind the upper front shock mounts, the top of the bar that runs down to the bumper, and the joint on each side of the oil tank, and the brace above the head under the fuel tank. That is a solid build that wont fail to finish any race unless you do something really stupid. It finished the baja 1000 after 4 years of gncc racing and 4 years of hard motocross racing. It was competitive until I stopped racing in 2010.
