Thank you so much for mentioning the charities that would love to have these! I have worked with several over the years and they appreciate all the donations they receive.
Great point about donations, Colin! For an afternoon of time, anyone with a few tools could batch a few of these out these out and donate them and make some family with small children feel a little more at home after a disaster or misfortune. Thank you!
Great Tutorial Colin! I been making toys for the Grandson, and it makes me so happy that he always goes for the ones I make over the plastic noise makers.
Congratulations, These may be simple wooden toys, but the characteristic curvy lines in each of them, indicates clearly that there is a soul and a spirit that needs great experience to achieve. They are well balanced and I would say that they are very artistic and very pleasant to look at and whey could easily be adapted as a cartoon character where a voice would be added to add effect. While the two cars and the train look as if they are " well mannered" that plane looks as it could be mischievous. Well done.
Great video... The Orange County Wood Worker takes a day and makes tons of these for charity ever year before Christmas. Great gift. Thank you for taking time to share this with others.
Lots of good ideas there Colin. Should make a lot of kids happy this Christmas finding wooden toys like that under their tree. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
First video of yours I watched. I don't have power tools just hand tools and im a begginer but I am determined to make my young one some amazing "planes, trains and automobiles" for her second birthday! Definately subscribed after this, Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom!
Thanks Colin, when ever I have an idea to make something I search your you tube channel. You have covered alot of projects, Techniques and common sense solutions with short how to video's.
Really good tutorial on beginner wheeled toys! I am just now starting wood working and really like how you showed 2 methods of wheels, and car designs. These are good basics that i can try out and modify as i get more experience. I like starter toys that are all one piece body, like your first car and the train. I feel those are the safest type of wheeled toy. (of course a perfectly safe toy is no wheels and no add on parts but hey i can make that a different project). Also the recessed wheel fender style looks very durable. Thank you for your video!
Another great video Colin. I am going to build some of these for my next door neighbor after watching this. I have some Bass Wood that should be pretty good. Thanks for the idea. Derek
Great video! I've been watching your channel for quite awhile now but still haven't seen all your past videos yet. Anyway whether it's past, present, or future videos thanks! I've learned so much and will continue because of people like you!
Thanks Colin ... great idea and easy to do! As I am a bit fussy ... would the wheels align better if the axel holes were drilled all the way through .... be sure to finish them with non-toxic paint or clear coat ...
+Evan Farrell They probably would if you have a good way of capping the wheels so they won't come off, that would be the ideal way. Going to leave them unfinished, but there are some non toxic coating that one could use
I would love to be able to do that and make toys for my granddaughter but that's an awful lot of equipment you've got there to do those simple toys. thank you for showing us!
Jackie Sicilian there are a lot of open workshops where you can use their equipment for a small fee. There are also people that show you how to use the tools. Look that up hopefully there is something like that in your area
Colin, this is off this subject but somewhat applicable. I make toy vehicles. I am using a fine toothed 1/8 inch bandsaw blade (approximately 16 teeth per inch). The blade seems to have wood debri along the sides and in some of the teeth. I am cutting Poplar. On the table I see tiny wood granules and they appear darker than the piece I'm cutting. What do you suspect could be the culprint?
Great video.. I love making wooden toys for kids... Just finished up a toy duck on wheels and a small cart with building blocks... Think I need to make me a few cars :)
Hi Mr Knecht loved the video ! This is a great project and also a great cause. I love watching your videos and you are great man sir ! Thanks for sharing your skills with everybody I have learned things from your videos. Always a pleasure to watch !
hello, what nice toys, really a good option for children. I have a query, maybe you can help me, is there a way or some method to make the cars with all their rounded profiles, maybe about 4in wide but not cutting each block one by one but for example taking a plank and having it done? the whole profile and then go cutting one by one? as to industrialize production i have some designs i made with my wife but it takes a lot of time to produce one and many people ask us to sell them!!
Hi Collin, I'm making wooden toys as well, and I'm wondering what kind of device it is you're using to round over the edges of you're toys? Thanks for the video, looks like great fun!
+David Moss Yes ... good point David, I think I forgot to mention that, yes a dab of glue ... each axel is independent because they have that wood knob on the end to stop the wheels from coming off ... that was why I use the drill press to align them
Hi Is it possible for you to put up templates for making these fantastic toys. Drawing is not a skill I possess, and even though the shapes seem to be so simple, I still have problems reproducing them.
Hi Graham, I know it's an old post. I'm a designer and lately interested anything about wooden toy. I got some design and 3D prototype but can't find place to produce it nor its too expensive just for a prototype. Do you want to "collaborate" with me?
I do not know how to do anything in wood, but I want to learn. My 3.5 year old boy wants to make dumb trucks and other farm and construction toys, but I don't know where to start from...All assistance will be gratefully appreciated, please!
This is good but I cannot make them at home. So, can I get something like wooden tankers, trailer, and rescue ladder? The model should be uniquely assembled and the toys must look elegant.
+Windsor Lim Hi Windsor ... when I started up many, many years ago, I only had a few screwdrivers, and hand saw and a hand drill but I learned a lot and slowly started buying more tools. Just takes time :)
Great video... perhaps I'll make some wooden toys for some friends with small kids this holiday season. My kid is a teenager now and he would only appreciate wooden toys if they had the ability to text his friends. Ha ha.
Awesome project idea for those small scraps we all have! I was wondering...do you plan on applying any finish to these? or since they're for kiddies are you just going to leave them unfinished?
+worldschaos2181 I was thinking the same thing. I'd like to put a finish on something like this so that it doesn't end up covered in juice stains. Shellac seems to be the clear choice (pun intended!). It's edible, so if the kids chew on the toys it won't hurt them.
Shellac is a great non toxic choice, so is mineral oil (food grade) and some people mix up a home made batch of bees wax with mineral oil combined, all non toxic. You can find the bees wax/mineral oil recipe in youtube videos, the only caution is use a very LOW heat temp when melting the beeswax or you can get a flash fire on your stove. Some people use olive oil and beeswax but vegetable oils can and do go rancid, so i would go the mineral oil route.
Thank you so much for mentioning the charities that would love to have these! I have worked with several over the years and they appreciate all the donations they receive.

Thank you so much for a great tutorial! I’m planning to make 100 of these this Christmas for donation ! This was very helpful
Great Tutorial Colin! I been making toys for the Grandson, and it makes me so happy that he always goes for the ones I make over the plastic noise makers.

Beautiful toys. I'm going to make some for my 2 year old son.
Hi great video! What kind of paint and finish do we need to use that aren't toxic to little kids?
Hi Thank You i have been looking for toys like these to donate to a thrift store for children. God Bless, Jeff.
These are such great toys! I especially love the train(of course!)
They came out great! Putting these on my to do list.

Great content, what was the tool that took the edges off a router?
What is the wood you have used ?
What other alternative wood types would suggest?
I would love to be able to do that and make toys for my granddaughter but that's an awful lot of equipment you've got there to do those simple toys.

_Awesome.A little bit of painting can make them more cute :)_
+Wizard of the Nights Yes, they would look better painted, as long as you can find child-safe paint for them
Awesome projects I can't wait to make a few. nice design as well as very informative video. Thanks
If you glue the axle, how do the wheels turn? I'm sorry i am totally new at this!
Hi Collin, I'm making wooden toys as well, and I'm wondering what kind of device it is you're using to round over the edges of you're toys?
Thanks for the video, looks like great fun!
Looks like a 1/4” round over bit
That’s what I use anyway...
Hi what stuff do you put on the wood to protect the children
When doing the wheels do you just stick the axle in with glue on it or they going all the way through like using two axle per car? Great video...
+David Moss Yes ... good point David, I think I forgot to mention that, yes a dab of glue ... each axel is independent because they have that wood knob on the end to stop the wheels from coming off ... that was why I use the drill press to align them
I LOVE THIS!!!
Great Video Colin thanks for sharing, I do have a couple of questions what size stock did you use for the toys.

Awesome job
Hi there, great video thanks for sharing. What stock did you use for the CAR (first version). Many thanks.
This is good but I cannot make them at home. So, can I get

This great. It inspires you to try and make it.. Just one question. Where do you get the wooden wheels?
Jeff Rogas I've seen wooden wheels at Michael's.
I love your toys can I get the plans
How do you prevent splinters in pine wood? Or any wood for that matter. I would be worried that what I'm selling would give a child a splinter.
Jamie English Sand paper
Thanks I wanted to make a wooden car for my nephew. Did you use clear shellac for a finish? what are your thoughts on that?
+worldschaos2181 I was thinking the same thing. I'd like to put a finish on something like this so that it doesn't end up covered in juice stains. Shellac seems to be the clear choice (pun intended!). It's edible, so if the kids chew on the toys it won't hurt them.
+Matt Heere ok that sounds good thank you for the reply.
+worldschaos2181 I did not use any finish, but Matt is correct about the Shellac
Shellac is a great non toxic choice, so is mineral oil (food grade) and some people mix up a home made batch of bees wax with mineral oil combined, all non toxic.
