  • A small wooden pull toy that has two horses that seem to race each other as they bob up and down when they are pulled forward. This toy is built from some of the scrap wood that I endlessly collect from other projects.

    Thanks so much for sharing your build! I just finished building this for my niece for Christmas and it turned out wonderful thanks to your detailed video. I made one horse out of maple and the other from walnut and the wheels from cherry.

    Thank you very much for taking the time making this video. I saw this toy on Pinterest and wanted to make it for my granddaughter's 4th birthday but I was having a hard time grasping the wheel set up. Your video was the only example I could find and it shows how to, very clearly. I can't decide if I will paint them or use 2 different colors of natural wood yet. All the others show both horses the same color. Thanks to your project it put the thought into my head that 2 different colors is an excellent idea!
    Update: I completed my horse toy and would love to show a photo but I don't know if I can do that here. Thanks again for the video

      I am making one, what is the hole placement? I made mine 180 degrees apart, 12 o’clock and 6, but it seems to jam up and not roll along.

      @heidibredehoeft9442 Год назад

      @@barryp4700 sorry, just now seeing this question. I did mine 180° also. Mine jammed up a little bit but I thought it was the tail getting stuck in the wheels. I'm not sure if there is a secret about that. 180° seems to make sense to me though.

    Excellent video. Question: How do you keep the exit hole from fraying when you drill? Mine seems to ‘burst out’ with splinters.

    • @RickMayotte
      @RickMayotte  2 года назад

      Make sure that your not drilling into a void. Use a backer board and make sure that your not drilling into a hole from a previous drill. Hope this helps.

    I watched your video clip and made it following it, but I made the same trial and error of drilling a hole in the wheel.
    Because I didn't understand re-positioning the hole in the video...ha ha ha!

    I made these little horses. They were fun and I also tried a set of tractors as well. I have a problem with both and I can’t quite figure it out. The tires will run most of the time but sometimes they start going sideways and bind up. I’ve really tried to keep things straight. Any ideas?

    • @stevencahn1530
      @stevencahn1530 2 года назад

      I had the same issue - wheels eventually bind up because they start going sideways. did you find a solution? In the video, he seems to simply straighten each pair of wheels by eye, to each other. I have been unsuccessful at doing that.

    • @darlenebowen1624
      @darlenebowen1624 2 года назад

      @@stevencahn1530 I gave up. I don’t make that little toy anymore cause they just are frustrating to keep going straight.

    • @stevencahn1530
      @stevencahn1530 2 года назад

      @@darlenebowen1624 I had an idea that the the hole In the horse's leg might be too big for the axle (too much wiggle-room).. I'm going to try to use a slightly larger dowel and see if it holds things straighter. I'll keep you posted! But I really appreciate your quick reply. All the best for the New Year.

    From one Grandpa to another excellent job and what a terrific gift ! Subscribed from NSW Australia
    Jim do you have any tutorials showing how to make repeated small pieces ? I am having trouble making the legs of a small pull along grasshopper ( making one set is ok but I want to make repeated sets)

    • @RickMayotte
      @RickMayotte  6 лет назад

      Thanks for your comment! As for making repeated small pieces, there is almost always a way to make a jig to make the job easier but not knowing exactly what you have in mind or the tools you have access to makes it hard to comment on anything specific.
