'Leave' voters are willing to give up access to the EU market to stop immigration

  • Voters who cast their ballots to leave the European Union in the United Kingdom's recent referendum on membership in the bloc said they would be willing to pay the economic price of severing access to the EU's single market if that's what it takes to stop more immigrants from coming to work in the UK.
    This is after some prominent leaders of the Leave campaign have backtracked since winning the referendum to say that they may not, after all, be able to put immigration controls in place if they want to keep doing business with the EU.
    VICE News sent Simon Ostrovsky to Clacton-on-Sea, a bastion for the pro-Leave United Kingdom Independence Party to find out why its residents were so ready to give up on the European project.

      India has been an english colony for centuries: from the XVII century to 1947. In my opinion, getting rid of them, now, is controversial and a little bit arrogant. P.S.: I'm not indian.

      Gerardo Vasta we aren’t planning on getting rid of any, we just don’t want anymore, Britain is changing and us British people don’t like it, it’s our country and our family’s have been here for generations so we should be able to say no more immigrants if we want to.

      Ok, understood. To be honest, coming from Italy, I've lived in Buckinghamshire for a while and I was thinking to make a new experience in Oxford but, maybe, I need to change my plans because moving to a country where I'm not accepted is not a brilliant idea. After all, you're right: it's your country, "Leavers" won and they should have the possibility to manage it as best as possible.

So what’s your point? Trade blocks like the European Union create unequal flows of trade, capital and people. Trade between EU countries is open leading to a disadvantage for poorer countries who want to do trade and people who want to enter EU countries it is a lot harder compared to EU citizens. • @Vivaporius
      @Vivaporius 8 лет назад

      The difference was that those migrants had an education and actively contributed to the society they were in. They assimilated and respected the traditions of the land they were now living in. They weren't just welcoming any ol' body in. Furthermore, the British allowed those migrants in on their own terms, there were no open borders back in the 1800s. This new wave of migrants does not speak English, they do not respect local customs and laws, they hold extremely violent and repressive ideals, they refuse to assimilate, and they are coming in numbers that Britain as a single nation cannot support.
      Mind you, Europe can barely cope with the million and a half migrants it currently has, yet you are expecting Britain to absorb a migrant population half that of a continent 40 times bigger than itself cannot? These migrants present an economical, cultural, societal, and logistical danger to Britain that it cannot hope to deal with, and it voted to get out while the getting was good. I cannot fault them for seeking to protect their national security and stability from a group which has been responsible for hundreds of mass rapes and riots throughout places such as Germany within the last year alone.

    • @DanielPlayGaming
      @DanielPlayGaming 8 лет назад +1

      Vivaporius Not everyone is an uneducated, violent or a rapist. Most people actually come here and work more than any British person. It's only a minoority

    • @Vivaporius
      @Vivaporius 8 лет назад

      DanielPlayGaming I never said any of that, and based on what I've read and seen, that isn't the case for most migrants. Most tend to contribute little as a group. I doubt those migrants moving across Europe to get to Britain have anything to contribute to the nation as a whole. The problem is that while that is the case, the issue lays in the fact that that has been changing. Remember, the immigrants of the past actually saw the need to assimilate into the culture of the land they came too. The majority of migrants, while European, aren't coming to establish roots and become permanent citizens.
      Most are typically unskilled and under-educated (not uneducated) Eastern Europeans such as Poles and Romanians, who because of the situation in their own countries, are migrating to better off nations and bringing the standard of living down, with no idea that the system they seek to benefit from is not going to last. The British economy cannot support that many people looking for the same benefits, and that doesn't even count the impoverished in Britain, as well as those economic migrants coming from Africa and the Middle East. There is going to be a breaking point at some time, and it is best Britain acts now rather than later.

    America could survive on it's own, completely isolated from any other countries and it could survive. It doesn't import oil, it has minerals, more than 300 million people and states worth of agricultural land to feed them. The reason why it is a global power is because of that. We have 60 million or so people in the UK and we're reliant on agriculture from across the world, our oil will leave us as soon as Scotland does, we mine on a minute scale, etc ,etc.

I didn't vote leave to stop emigration it just needs to be regulated like it is everywhere else out side Europe. I voted to leave because I wanted a smaller government with less regulations. That would allow growth of new businesses and preserve our democracy. As it is now we have no control over who comes into the country and thousands of regulations between us and a free market economy. Is it really unreasonable to ask those who want to come to the UK to secure work, speak the language and not have a criminal record before we allow entry?

    Aside from the obvious and basic ignorance of the 'teaching Indian' comment, how do the 'Indian cafés' or the 'Chinese opening everywhere' have anything to do with the EUROPEAN Union? Clearly this guy thought that voting to leave the EU equated to a vote against anyone non-white and non-anglophone (anglophone means English-speaking btw). So bizarrely he presents a good case for a second referendum, because he clearly didn't understand the issues at stake in the first one.

    • @sharplimelight7847
      @sharplimelight7847 5 лет назад

      You're the one that doesn't get it. I'll break it down. This is the way EVERYONE knows that most illegal and legal immigrants get to Britain. They either receive citizenship, or a work permit, or just sneak in another European country with less regulation and security, then exploit the open border to get into the UK. That's how Indians and Pakistanis do it, that's how Chinese and South-East Asians do it. You are the one who doesn't understand the issues at stake ad present a great case that the referendum should be more swayed to Brexit.

    • @sharplimelight7847
      @sharplimelight7847 5 лет назад

      @Gustav The Impregnated That is not what I said. Re-read my comment and don't strawman me. Most illegals either obtain legal permissions to enter and overstay or sneak in through the open border. It's easier to get to Spain, then the UK (for example) than it is to get directly into the UK if you're sneaking in as an illegal. Furthermore, the EU had previously agreed to share the burden of refugees and asylum seekers but the UK is one of the more popular destinations by choice and usually gets a larger burden.
      As for legal immigrants. When the UK immigration policy is stricter than another country in Europe, then migrants wishing to end up in Britain may receive work permissions in another country as well as a pass for free travel within the EU.These two permits allow them to travel to and work in the UK. They're not easy to get usually, I grant you, but it is a lot easier than attempting to enter the UK to begin with as an economic migrant.
      The EU's general immigration policy is also going to become even more relaxed due to aging population concerns and a lack of a labour supply. The UK has not reached that stage in the demographic transition to be worried enough about an aging population. The UK can afford to tighten up its immigration policy.
      I have not said that EU countries hand out citizenship for no reason to anyone. I'm saying that if the UK border was closed/controlled to Europe, then a major entry route for illegals into the country would be diminished. Some countries in Europe won't or are not capable of enforcing their borders like the UK might be, so they are exploited as illegal immigrant routes into the UK.

    • @sharplimelight7847
      @sharplimelight7847 5 лет назад

      @Gustav The Impregnated YES, some do get citizenship from another EU country and come in. That's frickin' obvious. It wasn't even part of my main argument. All EU citizens are free to move around the EU. Get citizenship from one, you don't need a visa to live/work anywhere else. This isn't the kind of immigration I worry about. I was more concerned about the other groups of immigrants.
      There are EU nationals living and working in the UK, yes?
      Can't dispute it. That's why the discussion is brought up.
      There are Naturalised EU nationals in the EU who are first generation immigrants from other countries, yes?
      Can't be disputed. I'm frickin' one of them. The EU has taken so many refugees and given them permanent work visas, let alone economic migrants.
      Some first generation immigrants who have obtained German, Greek, Polish nationalities now work in the UK. YES THEY DO. I DON'T MIND THEM. These people have usually been well assimilated into European culture and law. These people usually have a trade/expertise they bring in.
      I care about the unassimilated migrants from outside Europe who are illegal or are let in on a relaxed immigration policy. Hey, you clearly do not know what you're talking about. I maintain, I understand my comment. You seem to be asking for examples or something that exists in both probability and plain easy logic.

    • @sharplimelight7847
      @sharplimelight7847 5 лет назад

      @@jonb2750 That's true. Though triple isn't. The UK is going to probably use the same policy as Canada. If you're highly skilled, you'll get work permits easily and if you complete your education in the UK at degree level, you get to stay. That's fair enough. But illegal immigration would be reduced and low skilled work would probably take a hit at least at the start. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, the government has the power to control its immigrant intake and fine tune it depending on how the domestic labour supply is in each industry. No over competitiveness, no under-competitiveness in the labour market. Higher efficiency and productivity in the economy, and lower capital transfers outwards in remittances.

The truth is, if all the international cuisines upped and left, would people be happy? I'm sure there are a lot of English people who enjoy different types of cuisines as well. He says he isn't being racist but there is a level of fear and a undertone of dislike that I'm sensing. Things change, so do people and cultures... That is one thing that you cannot resistant. As a country we have had mass immigration and a lot of people live in the areas where it effects the most . In my own town there is an area where Eastern European’s have pushed out the local population . I even know of one person being terrorised to sell his house and then it being bought straight away by the polish neighbour whom then filled it with another 20 blokes living in there. Literally they hot bed whilst doing shifts and this guy is taking rent off all of them . The jobs they are doing are jobs British people should be doing . People who say they don’t lose jobs are stupid . I have seen it first hand . Full factories laying off workers one at a time and polish guys being made supervisors and told they will get payed more if they fetch more polish workers. They pay the supervisor a good wage and the rest peanuts and then the local workers are gone . It happens but when people point it out they are racist it’s bullshit . The past is the past and the British people of today aren’t what the empire was and actually anyone who really knows about it knows the bad things it did . It’s like saying the Germans today are all nazis . It’s not relevant . People should have a decision in their own country . They shouldn’t be forced out of their homes or jobs . So people like this man are tired of it all . This is how they vocalise it .

    The man at the start when replying about clacton actually having low immigration is the problem. The highest levels of remain voters were in areas of highest net migration. It's the fear of immigrants rather than immigration itself. He proves this by dismissing his own town which had low levels of immigration and talks about London with higher levels despite the fact that london voted remain. Moreover when talking about kids learning new languages at school and immigrants opening businesses as if those are bad things is bizarre. More languages children learn the better their prospects and immigrants helping the economy is surely a good thing.We really do have a lopsided view about immigration, maybe people really do believe the daily mail and don't care about facts and evidence. If that's true it's either because people aren't very bright or want to believe immigrants are bad, either way its depressing.

EU politicians decide they will need a law,(for example, about car safety,) This is given to the civil servants. They create the law on paper using all the correct legal jargon. The paper is them passed back to the EU politicians, who then vote on its acceptance or not. Another statistic is that the UK MEP's voted in favour of 95% of all EU laws (drafted by civil servants) since the year 2000. Another statistic, no laws were drafted or put in place regarding how curved bananas can be. lol.

As I got older I realised this was a pretty immature mindset and began to think we were all pretty similar, and I was proud to be British.
    In recent years, from both visiting England and seeing people's opinions expressed online related to Brexit I've started to really think the way we approach things in Scotland heavily contrasts the English mindset.
    It's ashame, as I voted to remain in the UK in our independence referendum, with a primary reason being EU membership. This was the most popular reason among everyone I spoke to who voted to remain in the UK.
    With this now gone, I really think the end of the UK is coming soon. If there's another referendum we'll be gone. I don't even want to argue of try say Brexiteers are wrong. We just think extremely differently, and demographically/culturally England is very different. Anytime I've gone south of the border I've felt very much like a foreigner. So perhaps it's better that like a toxic relationship, we go our separate ways rather than argue constantly.
    Hello Brexit, goodbye UK!

      badly as England?.......I know your a tolerant lot with your sectarianism and systematic bullying of English kids in Scottish schools.

      The idea that “Indian” is not a language whereas “English” is, is an example of _essentialism._ And when applied at this practical, everyday level (as opposed to the more formal context of, say, a Chomsky paper), it is an example of _bad_ essentialism.
      Or, put more simply, in this context the meaning of “language” is just not - and probably _could not ever_ be - precisely enough defined to let us state that “Indian” isn’t one, but that “English” is.
      Put even more simply, in this context: if “Indian” is not a language, then neither is “English”.

    and it's time you went back to school with your India and China story.
    they are not part of the European union.
    we will see what kind of state you find yourself in after the 29th of March.
    already work forces are moving out of the UK and setting up tent in the eu because they don't have confidence in the outcome of brexit.i can see the UK being a 3rd world country at this rate.
    all of a sudden you are not happy with the eu but many of you have been able to travel to eu countries and buy properties for instance in Spain and live a life that wasn't possible in the UK.
    medical care you name it.
    how two faced is that.
    brexit has divided the UK so much it's shocking to have to listen to these racist uitbursts.

      LMAO. Please stop, a third world country? There are problems like any nation but this is politics we're talking here. It will take some time but the UK will recover.

      What we wanted to happen has happened. Why do remoaners not realise that We have now set up trading deals with Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the world, we can now make our own laws free of the beurocracy of the EU, we can control out own waters and we can trade openly with the rest of the world. So what’s your point? Trade blocks like the European Union create unequal flows of trade, capital and people. Trade between EU countries is open leading to a disadvantage for poorer countries who want to do trade and people who want to enter EU countries it is a lot harder compared to EU citizens. The European Union is a horrible organisation that only seeks power and control to create more global inequalities while keeping a bubb

      the UK has some of the most variety when it comes to accents, people less than an hour from me have totally different accents. Just because you watched Harry fucking potter once and it's not all as magical as you thought. sorry this video ruined the illusion

      British accent sounds dumb asf now because of Brexit. It's a racist vote and the youth has the lowest turnout rate despite that many of them are against such bigoted ideal. Maybe they are lazy or just don't care and now their futures are that of uncertainty but most likely gonna be shit compare to the opportunity of their parents. And after the fact, they are all up in arms?!? Dumb asf, Britain. That accent, just sounds so dumb now. soooo dumb...

    • @josephhui1986
      @josephhui1986 8 лет назад

      ***** Oh yeah, it's a racist vote for sure. If it walks like a dog, barks like a dog, it's a dog. To deny that truth is just living in denial. But honestly with the state of UK's economy and race relation now after this blunder of a referendum you Brits called Brexit (even the name is dumb). I think it's better to live in denial than face the turd sandwich you guys made yourself. So glad we got our independent on July 4th, 1776, you know our Independence Day. Oh wait, you guys got yours too, right? Yeah and both your Brexit Heros just decided to retire after declaring Britain's own Independence Day... Ummmm I wonder why? Oh yeah, because it's a racist turd sandwich and even those racists politicians can't stand the smell and taste of the truly bigoted racist Brits which are coming out of the woodwork in droves. British accents (all british accents) sounds pretty dumb now to the whole world.

      ***** Not really, we sounded pretty smart now compare to you guys. We saved your dumbass back in 1945 and now we are coming to your rescue yet again since you guys don't even have enough negotiators with the EU and has to outsource it from US. I thought you guys don't want us, foreigners, taking all your job... hence Brexit... but now you need foreign workers to help you negotiate a deal to get out of the EU to prevent further foreigners from taking your job... well at least thats what all you guys voted for right? The irony, British accent sounds pretty dumb because of all these. It's like a really bad comedy show that won't end.

      Just because they want to slow the immigration doesn’t mean they are racist, it probably means they care about the working class and school leavers who can’t get jobs due to this. I’m a school leader who has applied to over 50 jobs over the course of the year and got no response, I’ve made cvs for a few other people who are older with more experience so it isn’t the cv that’s bad, therefore it only leaves the fact there’s too many people taking all the jobs, English included, however English people should be able to work in their country and pay their way

    It is NOT about immigration. It never was. People label it as such but you never hear ANYONE complain that there are too many Australians or New Zealanders over here. The issue is about CULTURE. It's not even a Black or White issue. It's about Culture. Should a countries people be made to feel ashamed of their history, language, religion and culture in order to enable Foreign people to settle here and continue the same culture that they "Fled" ?
