My English teacher appeared on this as one half of Renne & Renata with another teacher's husband before I met her. I wanted to go on it too and got a postcard, but then they axed it. You're right though, it was no Tiswas.

A huge failure , if you look carefully you will see that the opening titles were designed to include Big Daddy who pulled out at the last minute , Tommy Boyd was quickly brought in , but it was too late to change the title sequence , they just did some smart re-editing instead

Big Daddy did film a pilot episode, which according to Kaleidoscope, exists in the archives. I can imagine there being a sense of blind panic in the week up to the first show, but I have to admit that Central did the best the could under difficult circumstances, rejigging the titles and using footage from the pilot to cover over any cracks. Yes, the moon is supposed to be Big Daddy, I think Central were hoping no-one would notice that.

I loved that show. Chas & Dave were on the show many times, as also was Steve Davis. There were other guests on the series, some are now sadly no longer with us, like Chas Hodges, Ted Rogers, Richard Briers, Michael Nicholson, Carol Barnes, Jeremy Beadle, Lennie Bennett et al. (Chas Hodges was Chas of Chas & Dave incidentally, he died late last year at the age of 74).

This was developed as a Wednesday afternoon show hence a midweek version of Tiswas with Big Daddy presenting but four things changed Sally James announced that the 1981/82 series of Tiswas was to be her last and Central decided to move the intended midweek Tiswas to Friday afternoons with Rod Hull and Emu who ATV (who Central were called) 2 years earlier signed from the BBC which was eventually called The Pink Windmill Show which began in 1983 which led to this one replacing Tiswas

Number 73 didn't take the winter slot from this show at all. It got its first networked summer slot, in 1983, after having done two series in the TVS area. The Saturday Show was near-networked for all of its two series. Then Central created Saturday Starship for the 1984-1985 winter slot. 1985 did see things jigged about (Granada's TX effort) so TVS inherited the winter slot (Number 73/MotorMouth), and the small/medium ITV companies got the summer slot (Get Fresh/Ghost Train).

The opening titles for The Saturday Show seen here were only used for series 1 as for the second & final series a new title sequence was used.

Problem was by 1982 Tiswas was on its last legs and new stations like TVS took it off in favour of their own shows. In fact TVS own show No. 73 was eventualy to take over the winter slot from this show and ITV saturday morning came from Maidstone for the next 14 years.

I remember when Jimmy Greaves starred in the show wearing a blue satin The Saturday Show bomber jacket and shorts and would show his legs from time to time.

Yeah. He was on the show many times. Sadly passed away last year at the age of 81. Like his old fellow muckers Chris Tarrant & Gary Newbon, made his name in Brum.

This was the original The Saturday Show. Anyone remember on BBC 1 there was a show of exactly the same name but hosted by Joe Mace and Dani Behr which replaced Live and Kicking. That was a horrible show by then sadly Saturday morning kids tv was all but being phased out

If I was in charge of Talking Pictures TV i'd buy The Saturday Show episodes, and show them again saturday mornings with the original breaks and at the same time that it went out at, 10.30am.

It didn't. The dreadful Fun Factory with the even more dreadful Billy Butler replaced TISWAS. That didn't last, and Saturday Show came on afterwards. It was better IMO.
