  • At last - an episode from the very first series of Emu's World! Unfortunately, this is the only one we currently have, so if you were one of the "Dancers from The Betty Pattison Dancing Academy", or you know somebody who was, or even if you have no connection at all with the show but you do have some recordings, please contact us. We'll arrange for any necessary transfers to be made to a professional standard, all tapes will be returned, and DVD copies provided. The easiest way to get in touch is to send an e-mail to my username (above, starting Videot...) at gmail dot com. We know that these episodes are out there somewhere, and the search is on!
    So what great surprises await? Well, there's a pre-credits gag at the start, the set hasn't quite been finalised with barely any 'outside', Streak and the gramophone seem to have swapped home, Rod breaks the fourth wall and speaks to the viewers, non-cartoon realistic Hovergrot clouds, a "Goodnight, Emu" over the end credits... lots of minor differences from what followed, but most obviously, we've got a dumpy little Croc. He's voiced by Freddie Stevens, but going by the end credits, I suspect he was played by young Richard Pitt:
    youngfrankenstein.co.uk/cast/...
    www.scottsboromusicallondon.co...
    Look out also for a cookery lesson, and an educational bit featuring some children from the Far East showing off some traditional Chinese food and demonstrating how to use chopsticks. Diversity was one of the main tenets of the show right from the start. The songs, meanwhile, are This Ole House - an old standard that was a UK number one for both Rosemary Clooney and Shakin' Stevens - and a medley of Alexander's Ragtime Band (by Irving Berlin), Hey, Mr Music Man (by Peters and Lee) and Sing (made famous by The Carpenters, and written by the bloke who did the Sesame Street theme tune). I'm told that the jazz band joining in for the medley are The Brownhills Tartans.
    Although we don't know specifically which episode this is, we do know it was originally broadcast within the first six weeks of 1982, which is straight after Central Television took over from ATV. [EDIT: We now believe it to be the second episode of the series, which aired on Tuesday, 12th January, 1982, at 4.20pm.] That said, the fact that the continuity either side is Children's ITV rather than Watch It proves that this is a repeat from mid-1983 (probably July). Of course, that's Pat Coombs presenting, who would later fill in for Grotbags in 1986 and play King Boggle's love interest in 1987. I'm pretty sure she's meant to be on the set of Ragdolly Anna here.
    Huge heaps of gratitude to Spencer for lending me this tape.

    For some reason this makes me feel really nostalgic. I have no idea why because I was born in 2006, so I never watched this as a child. This is my first time watching it and I feel like I recognise it. Maybe I watched it in a past life or something, because it makes me mourn a childhood I never had.

    Great stuff and wonderful to find - initial thoughts...Grotbags has got the character from the get go although her costume is radically different to what we know as are the scenery designs! So many Pink Windmill kids! Wow! all in all tho great! :D

      Good point - the character of Grotbags really was nailed right before they even started, it seems. Though having said that her accent briefly goes full-on Auntie Kipplewick around 14:48! This was from the very first series. I believe Episode 3. We were the ‘band’. And we were supposed to be in the studio but they hired someone else who didn’t even match the uniform and had a baton that we didn’t even possess. We were taped for a good few hours to other songs like Alexander’s Ragtime band but it never made the cut for this episode. Thank you! We have been looking for this for years. I’ve passed it down to the band. Brownhills Tartans Jazz Band so they can do it their kids.

      You're very welcome - I hope it brings back some nice memories for everyone involved! It's a pity the Brownhills Tartans Jazz Band never made it to the studio, but at least they've been immortalised one way or another. The day of the shoot must have been quite an experience. :-)

    From what is seen here, the interior of the windmill seems smaller, there are items that won’t be seen later like the blue cannisters and the beam near the cooking area (not sure on the latter though), there isn’t any dialogue from the Pattison kids (much less Rod calling them out by name), the Hovergrot is so different, Grotbags didn’t have much green paint, and of course Croc just looked like a dark colorful squirrel.
    Nonetheless, this incarnation just says about what the show fundamentally is - the adventures of Rod, Emu, the kids, Grotbags, and Croc in a musical and fun environment with an established rivalry. There will be more explored (as seen in the later series and versions), but that is the basic premise, and I’m glad it’s manifested in here. Of other note - the musical numbers are done so well.

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  6 лет назад +1

      Well spotted about the dialogue! It does seem strange that even our disappointed baton-twirler, who sort of has a brief starring role, only nods and shakes her head rather than actually having any lines. Still, you're absolutely right that they had the fundamentals in place already, and for me all they had to do was tweak it and smooth over a few iffy parts, and they were there. Fascinating to finally see the roots of the show. :-)

    Ooh, an episode from the reclusive Series 1! And now I remember why I didn't watch the earlier series... this incarnation of Croc used to give me scare me and give me nightmares! :( I'll admit that he still kinda scares me now. From what I watched, this series seems to be completely different than what we're used to. Most of the things we've come to know and love were all there ("There's Somebody at the Door", Grotbags trying to steal Emu, the singing and dancing kids, the opening and end credits - the latter of which I do believe was recycled for Series 2-5), but there's just something about this episode that's almost surreal. It's almost like watching Emu's World in the world where things weren't quite right. Nonetheless, it was alluring (and a wee bit scary to watch this episode, and I'm very excited to be able to see what's to come from Series 2 and how we first meet the kids we've all come to know and love next week. Also, it's a shame that the full length intro (ruclips.net/video/QJAZEON_4oo/видео.html) in its original glory wasn't included on this rerun because that would be a neat treat.

      +Noreen Sabelle I know what you mean - it all feels a bit like stepping through the looking-glass, or one of those strange dreams when people and places you know well don't quite look like how you know they look! You'll get to see Croc's transformation in the first episode of the second series, by the way, which is the next one I plan to upload. :-)

    • @noreensabelle1505
      @noreensabelle1505 6 лет назад

      Ooh, how exciting! So the grubby "Mr. Croc" (another observation I noticed about this episode) was in part of the Series 2 opener before I assume he magically took a bath and grew. Though the Series 2 Croc head still looked slightly more menacing than the ones that followed, it just feels more natural looking at a green Croc instead of the tiny mucky suit of this series. Hopefully we'll find the other five episodes of this series because one of the things that is beginning to interest me is THE series premiere and how everything and everyone we came to know and love was introduced. :-)

      Lyric Rogers Not as far as I know, so our only hope would be the original episodes. The thought does occur, though, that it could be them singing the theme tune at the end even into the Corona era. (Would they have bothered to re-record it? Probably not.)

      I'm keen to see the rest of this first series of Emu's World to see whether they kept up this sort of thing throughout - like, an educational strand on a different nationality each week or something. There's plenty of scope for that to look very uncomfortable from today's standpoint, but at least it was done with the best of intentions.
      P.S. A relative of mine was born in Asia, never used a knife and fork together until coming over here aged around 12 or 13, and tells the story of being pretty much baffled in the dinner hall on the first day of school! That's the one thing we all tend to forget about diversity: the diversity _within_ the diversity.

      Also you have to remember that back then , without Twitter and professional (outrage mobs) unless you are constantly obnoxious and obviously trying to belittle and bully , most people used to let their humour out measure there potential to get offended on some deep personal cultural heritage level , during a patomine.
      That is really what people have forgotten how to do these days
