Thank you so much for this video. I’ve discovered that I have sometimes been using the thread clip on my 590 incorrectly. But now I know - thanks to this video.
It’s a wonderful thing as simple as it is but can cause issues if used incorrectly. Happy to share with everyone. 😊. I’m actually using it right now. 😃
Cody, thank you so much for your really thorough and informative videos. You have helped me more than a couple times now, and honestly have kept me from selling this machine!!! 😬🙈 I think I’m going to make little sticker symbols or a notecard to help me remember what you’ve just explained! Thanks again!!
This was great. Could you do another one showing where and how to use those caps we get with the Bernina in the 3 sizes? I’m never sure which one to use and what direction to point it. Thanks.
Hi, do you mind me asking a question ? How do you know which size of spool cap to use with the sewing thread ? Thanks in advance. Love your videos by the way, I have a Bernina 770QE plus and I've learnt so much from watching you explain things !
I love questions. Thank you for watching my videos I am so happy to share information. 😀 So when it comes to the spool caps as you know the machines come with three the small medium and large spool caps, 9/10 I use and recommend the small spool cap. I’ve found that it’s best to use a spool cap that is smaller than the spool. Using a larger spool has the chance for the thread to get caught between the cap and the spool. Also using too large of a carpool cap can sometimes cause more tension on the thread before it enter the machine. Hope this help? 😃😃😃
If you want to show what happens to the thread when you take it vertically vs horizontally : you can take a toilet paper, which is an example to a stacked thread, and take the paper horizontally (nothing will happen), then take the paper vertically, and you will see that it tangles at once, as more twist is added. I have seen this example once when learning to spin (with a hand spindle and a spinning wheel)
Thanks for this very helpful video, I have a question : on my manual (790+), they say that the spool on the horizontal spool holder should be going in clockwise direction, so that the thread is at the TOP of the spool not at the bottom. But on your video with this type of spool you have the only choice that the thread is going from the bottom... why advise a way of winding if it is not applicable to all the spools ? or I didn't understand the explanation in the manual, it is a possibility ahahahaha !
I have watched 2-3 different tutorials on HOW TO THREAD the 590, and I cannot figure out what is happening on step 4. In one video I see the thread has gone through the eye of a silver bar that is tucked into the groove. I'm guessing there is a slot my thread is supposed to snag to force it into that hole?? I just don't see anything the thread is supposed to hang over to catch the slot or anything else.
Thank you for this. I never knew about the clip. Can a multi-purpose thread stand work on both the 475qe and the 790plus. Is it interchangeable or a permanent install for each machine. Obviously I need it more for the 790plus and embroidery work. Thanks again! How is Pete?
Yes the isacord will sit straight up on the vertical pool pins on the multi spool holder. The thread will be pulled off from the top of the cone just as it would if it were on the horizontal pool pin. Hope this helps. I find the isacords work even better on the multi spool holder 😊😊
When we are looking at our spool of thread usually the shorter fatter spools that have thread wound on it that looks very smooth and uniform going from top to bottom. This is a stacked spool. If you are looking at a spool that has thread that looks like it wis wrapped at an angle and not uniform at all that is a wrapped spool. I hope this makes sense, I am usually used to showing example of the two instead of verbally describing it. haha
Thanks for info. I am having trouble with the machine stopping and the screen shows thread spool and it not being threaded correctly. No matter what I do, it stops about every 15 stitches…..any suggestions?
I have this same issue even after having it serviced. I’m beyond frustrated. All I’m told is that I must be threading it wrong. I’ve tried 6 times and even had my mother try who’s experienced with Bernini’s and got the same error.
One more comment. I was told that when I’m unthreading my machine that I should never pull it out from the top. I was told that I have to cut the thread at the top and pull it through the needle. I’ve been sewing my whole life and have always just pulled it out of the top. There’s not thread waste that way and old habits are hard to change. Please tell me I’m not ruining my machine and please tell me why this is necessary.
That is correct, It is highly recommend to put your thread from the top of the machine where the thread enters the machine. Then pull your thread out of the machine from the needle area. If you don't do this you will not ruin your machine but you can cause excess lint built up over time more than normal in the tension mechanism and could cause slight harm. However you won't break your machine. We always like to describe it as a one way street. Thread should just go one way through the machine. :)
Cutting thread at the top & pulling out at bottom near needle….yes does waste a small amount of thread but….insures your flowing with the direction of the tension disks. That thread loss, to me, is worth keeping tension area clean of lint. Happy quilting & always do what works for you ❤
Different brands decided to apply their thread differently on spools. Usually all metallic threads are stacked, a lot of superior threads and coats and Clark threads are also stacked. All of your mettler , Aurfil threads Isacord threads Guterman those are all wrapped. Most threads these days are wrapped on the spool. there are so many different brands out there that it’s hard to give a detailed answer exactly which brand wraps or stacks their spools. Fortunately it’s super easy to tell when you look at the spools.

Excellent videos! Thanks for telling me WHY I do something, not just HOW to do something.
Great threading information! Always learn something new! Thank you❤
💯🙏🏼 I agree. I just got my first Bernina ❤
Thank you Cody. Your explanations are always so clear and helpful.

When the thread is on the horizontal holder do you have the thread come over the top or from the bottom?
You are my go to source for everything. Thank you for your precise and clear videos!
Thank you! Thank you, Cody! I learned so much. I was having some thread issues with my 750 when embroidering, and now I know the solution.
You just made me smarter today. THANK YOU for this GREAT tip!
Thank you so much. Your videos are always so informative.
My pleasure. I truly enjoy sharing information with everyone. 😀
Excellent explanation! Thank you for your awesomeness! Give Pete a treat for me!
Wow. Never use that little clip! Always put thread on multi spool holder. Will thread through the little clip and test. Thx Cody
Do you also use the "clip" when winding a bobbin from the multi-spool holder or vertical spool holder?
Thank you! Learned so much!

Great video, thanks. Where did you get your storage system that’s in the background of your video?
Thank you for the great advice.

A question about using Isocord on the multi-thread holder. Does the Isocord sit on a vertical spool when it’s on the multi thread holder? Thanks

I think I “need” that multi-thread holder!!!!😂
Please help me be able to decipher if the spool is stacked or top loaded.

Hi Cody, Help me with this. Why are people into quilts. I mean, how many quilts do you need? To me it's one and done. Then what?
Quilts are an heirloom that can be passed on from one generation to the next. Everyone can use a couple quilts.
Is bernina and Bernette the same company?
Which thread brands are each, wrapped and stacked?
Different brands decided to apply their thread differently on spools. Usually all metallic threads are stacked, a lot of superior threads and coats and Clark threads are also stacked.
