He is able to "spam" hooks because he has forced his opponent to be defensively compromised either through body shots to keep hands low or hooks upstairs to open the body shot or throwing consecutively to the head because his opponent doesn't have his feet weighted and balanced underneath so he can't counter anyway etc etc. Mid to Close range hooks are also the direct counter to a ranger out fighter too?? 2. He never throws body or head kicks because he is a boxer through and through. He doesn't throw those kicks because his foot at 1'o Clock makes it not viable often in the first place. 3. Gaethje has more power but Ilia hits harder because his punches aren't pure power. His body mechanics create an insane amount of centrifugal force from rotation, timing, speed and angles. Also Ilia's style of striking is boxing in the pocket which Max has never been outdone in (Anytime he's pointed to the octagon with 10 seconds left, against TKZ, and even against Poirer to an extent)

It's a pick'm fight. Max has supreme skills, endurance, and is a dawg. He also has a chin. He's got all the tools. Topuria has a tight defense, a great sense of range and sense of where he wants to be in the cage. And he's got insane power, because of his technique, which is not flashy. His fundamentals are solid. Short guys who have all these attributes AND who have power are difficult to beat. They are difficult to hit clean to the body, because there is a much smaller target, the target is lower, and the target is more easily covered up. I think Topuria has GOOD cardio, but Max has GREAT cardio. If the fight goes the full five rounds, that MIGHT be the difference.
Don’t forget Topuria has a very high level ground game. If he starts grappling with Max and making it dirty he could submit Max as well. Topuria was an elite grappler long before he became a very polished boxer.
I know this is extremely unlikely, but what will your reaction be if Max somehow puts on a Calvin Kattar type performance and creates a new strike record.
Won’t happen, Ilia has great defense. His tight guard makes punches glance off him and he has very good head and body movement. His boxing just keeps getting better and better and he has a knack for finding the perfect opening and being patient until he finds that moment to pounce.

After Ferguson's fall, Max became my favourite fighter but Topuria is a level above in terms of pure quality, even if he's not that likeable as a person nor as a fighter. Also, we haven't seen yet Topuria's ground game. He's not a striker and never has been. If he's at any time feeling outstriked by Max he can easily win it on the ground.

There is a world where Max survives and wins through cardio. I think Topuria should only grapple to make Max think about it but not be too ambitious. Of course he might just tap Max. But if he fails to do so we all know that grappling drains the gas tank like crazy. I can see Illia doing what Poirier did to Max but better. Just punching with more power and countering him. Winning the fight with less volume but more significant strikes.

@@engineer_429 people always talk about takedown defense without looking at who these guys actually fought and the conditions the takedown attempts came under. Calvin Kattar also had a great TDD % and then he ran into Aljamain Sterling and Sterling put up a career-high on him with ease. It’s just not the same. Striking also isn’t the same when the takedown threat is present (which Max typically doesn’t deal with). Look at Poirier vs Islam. Poirier said he was hesitant to open up because of the threat of the takedown. I honestly believe Topuria can beat anyone in a standup battle, but even if that turns out to be false he had an amazing Plan B.

1. He doesn't spam hooks he sets everything up with his jab and his boxing stance movement. He is able to "spam" hooks because he has forced his opponent to be defensively compromised either through body shots to keep hands low or hooks upstairs to open the body shot or throwing consecutively to the head because his opponent doesn't have his feet weighted and balanced underneath so he can't counter anyway etc etc. Mid to Close range hooks are also the direct counter to a ranger out fighter too??
2. He never throws body or head kicks because he is a boxer through and through. He doesn't throw those kicks because his foot at 1'o Clock makes it not viable often in the first place.
3. Gaethje has more power but Ilia hits harder because his punches aren't pure power. His body mechanics create an insane amount of centrifugal force from rotation, timing, speed and angles. His chopping right on Herbert was more devasting then any shot Gaethje has thrown in his career.
Gaethje also dropped Holloway, That wasn't just a wobble regardless of what "official stats" say.
If he can catch him. Holloways footwork and angles is light years ahead of Topuria. Topuria just walks you down. Max can counter punch good and has kicks. His takedown defense is great. And he has submissions. Look how many people have tried to walk him down. And attack his legs.If you beat this kid its gonna be by points. Takedowns, Not a knockout. It's a pick'm fight. Max has supreme skills, endurance, and is a dawg. He also has a chin. He's got all the tools. Topuria has a tight defense, a great sense of range and sense of where he wants to be in the cage. And he's got insane power, because of his technique, which is not flashy. His fundamentals are solid. Short guys who have all these attributes AND who have power are difficult to beat. They are difficult to hit clean to the body, because there is a much smaller target, the target is lower, and the target is more easily covered up. I think Topuria has GOOD cardio, but Max has GREAT cardio. If the fight goes the full five rounds, that MIGHT be the difference.
Don’t forget Topuria has a very high level ground game. If he starts grappling with Max and making it dirty he could submit Max as well. Topuria was an elite grappler long before he became a very polished boxer.
I know this is extremely unlikely, but what will your reaction be if Max somehow puts on a Calvin Kattar type performance and creates a new strike record.
I think it’s a bit more likely to happen that way than we think tbh 👀 Max will be at his best, but Topuria is a monster.
Won’t happen, Ilia has great defense. His tight guard makes punches glance off him and he has very good head and body movement. His boxing just keeps getting better and better and he has a knack for finding the perfect opening and being patient until he finds that moment to pounce.

I agree with Lucas that on paper Illia is clearly a nightmare matchup for Max. But I must say that if Illia is overly aggressive with his grappling and striking output. There is a world where Max survives and wins through cardio. I think Topuria should only grapple to make Max think about it but not be too ambitious. Of course he might just tap Max. But if he fails to do so we all know that grappling drains the gas tank like crazy. I can see Illia doing what Poirier did to Max but better. Just punching with more power and countering him. Winning the fight with less volume but more significant strikes.

The only fight he didn’t was for the Bmf belt. Against Yair he took him down and held him there. Topuria is much less likely to take down Max as Maxs frame is large and he is already very good at defending takedowns

Max is known for turning up the heat, and adding pressure and speed onto his opponents. Illia has never faced a style like that, and since Max has a concrete chin he won’t be able to knock him out unless he hits him with a bat to the back of the skull. Illia probably won’t even use his grappling out of his insane ego and also due to his takedowns probably won’t even succeed. Max has great tdd and won’t just crumble under pressure of Illias takedowns
@@engineer_429 people always talk about takedown defense without looking at who these guys actually fought and the conditions the takedown attempts came under. Calvin Kattar also had a great TDD % and then he ran into Aljamain Sterling and Sterling put up a career-high on him with ease. It’s just not the same. Striking also isn’t the same when the takedown threat is present (which Max typically doesn’t deal with). Look at Poirier vs Islam. Poirier said he was hesitant to open up because of the threat of the takedown. I honestly believe Topuria can beat anyone in a standup battle, but even if that turns out to be false he had an amazing Plan B.
