The shaft is fixed to the body. It doesn’t rotate. Only the impeller rotate. If you still have the old water pump, remove the o- ring on the shaft and pull the impeller out. It is swollen or crack. Mines was cracked and swollen.
I can’t tell you how comforting it was to hear you “Kaput”! I’m not sure I’ve heard that outside of my German-American family (even tough that is a legit English word nowadays). Keep doing what you are doing. I so appreciate your expertise!!
Great and informative 😊 I am new in this vehicle sector for diagnosis problem by scanner. At present I have found the same problem in our workshop(Small workshop not upgraded due to remot area and poor country but i have a Carman i100 scanner) so this documentary is very helpful for me 🙂... Sooo lot of thanks for this type great work ❤ and i am from Bangladesh. Lot of pray for you sir❤
Thank you so much!!!! My 2015 avalon hybrid has 99,960 mile on it and finally had the check engine light come on as got this code. The car gave me an indication of it overheating about 2 months ago and then once about 2 weeks ago so apparently the pump was just staring to go out as this last time the engine light came on.
There is a relay in the engine fuse box associated with this problem. It is the R1 Cooling system (ENG W/P) and is located on the top right side of the engine fuse box. This relay can weaken with a failing water pump. After replacing the pump, if you get a P251C and the car possibly entering limp mode, replace this relay. It's about $17. Ask me how I know. I was working on a friend's Gen3 and put their relay in my car and after 30 minutes of driving, BOOM, P261C.
Hi I just replaced a new OEM water pump and new OEM thermostat on 2014 Prius and warning lights came on (check hybrid system and stop car in safe place) engine light p261c car shuts off after 10 minutes Should I replace the water pump fuse ?
Thanks for the info. My prius .. went on freeway and the temperature icon red light came on and went away within like less than 5 minutes. Did my engine overheated? But then no more light for rest of the day. Next morning I start the car and check engine light came on! Then I shut off engine did not drive it
Love modern vehicles and their insane quest to get mileage from every drop of fuel by overly complicating every system on them to the point where people trade them in like I phones that's just so great for the environment! After all it barley takes any energy to make a new one!
It might be that you terribly wrong. The part that you're trying to twist is unmovable. On the water pump moves only propellers. Before buying the new water pump I highly suggest to disassemble current water pump and try to clean it to get a nice and free spin. Code p261b tells you that the water pump spinning less then 900rpm. That usually happens when the pump propellers is dirty.
Sorry but, that shaft DOESN'T HAVE TO SPIN, is stationary. What's spin is the impeller. Take out the o'ring and washer from that shaft and pull the impeller out,. Attached to the impeller is the rotator component of that electric motor. Usually this part gets bad and its plastic body cracks. Inside the pump body are the coils stator and other components. It doesn't work as a regular electric motor that the center spins, on this case the outer part does it.
I was curious after replacing this pump on my 2015 Prius V, I found that the magnet attached to the impeller was bulged out on the sides causing it not to move freely. Seems like replacing this component may be a less costly alternative to replacing the entire pump. Frustrating that these are failing so soon. I took some photos if anyone is curious
Hi Peter, and thank you for all your informative videos! You were holding onto the shaft which is fixed to the pump itself. The only thing that turns is the impeller which has magnetic inside of it. The windings are in the pump itself Peter so what do you think about just replacing the impeller? I see there are some aftermarket Impeller that could replace a swollen or impeller. Thank you.
At least in the olden days you can see the water pump leaking and then you Could change it I kind of gave you a warning before the car even started overheat now these electric water pumps can just seize up and actually cost you a motor
I just did my water pump after a week of that error code. 2015 Toyota Prius with 86k miles My pump was still running but When I removed it I noticed it didn’t spin as easily and would bind at some points. I was lucky and maybe it’s designed that way, to alert P261B code when it starts failing giving out before it catastrophically fails and causes a costly overheated engine.
that shaft does not move, pull the rotor up and out, off the shaft. You may find that the housing around the magnet has cracked and is swelling not allowing the rotor to spin
I have 2014 Prius I replaced a new OEM water pump and new OEM thermostat with the Toyota pink coolant system then started the car maintenance mode to bleed air ,10 minutes later engine shuts off and warning light came on check your hybrid system and stop the car 😮
I have a question, I got this code but it was only over heating at 50 miles per hour or more, then I changed it and the whole car would shut down after 2 miles. and still giving the code for water pump? Could it be something else? How do I check the relays?
Thanks Peter for passing along all your knowledge. I watched one of your videos showing how labor some working on a V6 in a car can be. The Highlander V6 is it the same or better?
i have a short and simple question. can i fix my water pump just replacing that spinning part? Because on mine i see the round yellow part with a couple cuts.
Hello I have a question. I own a 2007 Toyota RAV4 with 3.5 v6 and keep getting p0456 very small Evap leak I have replaced the gas cap and purge valve and code still comes back Any suggestions besides charcoal canister ?
I saw random overheating at 150k. replaced the pump with ebay one, osias. not aisin, but osias is a reputable brand. 70.00. the problem reappeared immediately. replaced thermostat, temp sending unit, checked coolant system pressure, no exhaust fumes in coolant, clean oil, clean coolant... only sporadic overheating with both old aisin and new osias pump. yesterday i connected autel and watched target pump speed and actual speed. got to 100 degC, and both speeds were zero. BUT. When I started watching the temp increase, at one point the target speed got to 2500, and then instantly to 0 rpm. i did not pay attention to this, but it seems this is the most important of all. ECU sets the speed to 2500, the pump does not respond, and appears like a short. Then the ECU sets the target speed to 0 to prevent further damage and generates the P216C code, pump B... short circuit, or open circuit, etc. does this make sense?
Hi, My 2014 prius is giving code P148F and heater doesn't work for a long time. Also I noticed overheating light one. Would you recommend replacing the pump? I appreciate your help. Thank you!
Both my mother's and my car Camry had failed water pumps before 60k miles. I knew in the case of my car I had initially issues with the heater and that was coolant was low. The regional Toyota HQ told me the they don't last more than 60k. Planned obsolescence. Yet...I'll buy another Toyota because they still last longer than any other brand. I couldn't imagine buying another brand, especially domestic...though my Camry was built in Kentucky. Fingers crossed else it's history. "Kaput"...that's a Yiddish word. LOL. My father would come up with his own words, for instance with my alias Gidagorfen for him meant "It's a whatchamacallit". So if there's anything in the car you're not sure of...it''s a gidagorfen.
My 2008 Prius has a belt driven water pump. It went 280,000 miles. And the replacement from O'Reilly's Auto Parts was $50. Electric water pump failure is pretty common on the third gen Prius 2010 to 2015 as well as anything else that has that powertrain. They're also well known for having EGR coolers clogging up with carbon residue. both of these can end up causing a blown head gasket. If you want a reliable Prius get a second gen 04-09. They certainly have a few issues themselves, but they tend to not have engine problems. My 08 now has 340,000 Miles.
Hi, Thanks for the nice video. I have 2014 Prius V (3,30,000 KM). It keeps on blowing cold air in the morning when it is cold outside even after the coolant temp is 85C. Also electric water pump stays at 6375 rpm. However if I restart the engine then pump runs at 2975 rpm and it blows hot air with no problem afterwards. Recently I got the error code P148F (Engine coolant pump over revolution) which I cleared. I have already replaced the thermostat but I think the old one was also good. Please advice if I need to replace the water pump? I appreciate your help. Thank you!
Hi! I have the same problem with my Prius 2014. Fault code P261B. My car have done so far 210.000 miles. I change the water pump brand new and The thermostat but stil have The same problem. I don’t understand why? Something solution for expert will be great. Thanks!!!
I have 2017 Toyota Rav4 XLE Hybrid. Can you make video, How to clean hybrid cooling fan and replace hybrid filter to save hybrid battery and save money. The Dealer charge a lot of money for 10 mins. work. Thank You....
The pump got progressively harder to spin... Overheating problem started intermittently, as the pump progressively worsened. Pump then overheated and seized from increasing resistance as its bearing failed, possibly due to coolant ingestion.
This video is all wrong regards the pump and how it works... the shaft is fully fixed to the assembly so it will never spin at all and it's the rottor what spins freely...
Pull out the too-small impeller and you'll see a stupid plastic ring around the impeller armature. It will be cracked and it jams the impeller. GEN 3 was poorly designed. Besides the blown head gaskets caused by the inadequate, poorly designed (and never corrected) water pump (2010-2012 the worst), it has an equally poorly designed and implemented EGR system that clogs up. And # 3, the PCV valve is too low on the engine block so you need a catch can. So if you want to drive a Prius 400k without the expense of an endless money pit like a German car (they haven't figured out how to make plastic and rubber yet), Stick with GEN 2. My mechanical water pump has gone 205k so far, and if it goes, I'll probably know early by vibration and/or leaking before it blows the head gasket. And a new water pump is less that $50 and can be changed in about 30 minutes without dismantling the induction system. The GEN 3 ruined the Prius reputation of low cost transportation. I own 3 Prii and the best thing you can do is buy a GEN 2 and never use WS ATF. Use a real synthetic. REDLINE D6.
That's just what I was thinking. Some other car youtubers doing mercedes etc really freak me out. New cylinder heads needed and all sorts. Easily thousands of dollars. Scary stuff
Check the video length and set your expectations before you even click on it. You're not going to see a full water pump diagnosis and replacement in 4 mins odd. I actually find it quite interesting to see the failure modes of parts. Just because YOU didn't find it useful or interesting, doesn't mean it wasn't worth making this video for others. I'm really frustrated by people like you that can't see past your own feeble life experiences.
The shaft is fixed to the body. It doesn’t rotate. Only the impeller rotate. If you still have the old water pump, remove the o- ring on the shaft and pull the impeller out. It is swollen or crack. Mines was cracked and swollen.
You are right. I just added some more details about.

Peter On A Water Pump It's Called An * IMPELLER * All Your Videos Are Great Both Channels
Peter says propeller or impeller, the motor is still kaput ! Lol

I just had this code pop but keeps going on and off. Am I okay to make it home and drive the next day or two before my appointment or no?
Keep an eye on your engine coolant temperature. If it peaks above 200 degrees Faranheit get it fixed immediately.
That shaft never moves.

Another reason why I will keep driving my old Camry...😃
Agree.Hate this plastic crap.Toyota is not what it used to be.

Love this channel! Thanks!
This video really help thanks boss
Thanks for the information, it was very helpful and helped me a lot
My mechanic said it is the hybred unit in the front left side, not the water pump.

It would be nice if you showed the relay that you say should be checked on the driverside and show how to test the relay.
that shaft does not move, pull the rotor up and out, off the shaft. You may find that the housing around the magnet has cracked and is swelling not allowing the rotor to spin
I get this code with my prius plus 2015. The piece make noses , I think it's better to change the whole piece cause I have to change it anyway .
Excellent info
Děkuji 👍😉
Thank you
Would be great to see a tear down and see what has happened inside and see which part of the motor failed
Hello . Do you mean that the new pump spins freely ?
Great Job!
they are charging $1,000 now at the lexus dealership
I have 2014 Prius I replaced a new OEM water pump and new OEM thermostat with the Toyota pink coolant system then started the car maintenance mode to bleed air ,10 minutes later engine shuts off and warning light came on check your hybrid system and stop the car 😮
The engine light turns on when it’s cold. I have a clear dose machine I use. Idk what it is
I've changed 3 water pump and in the winter it gives same type of code
Thank you!
Let me say, excellent use of your title
I’m having this issue now with my 2017 hybrid le after I replaced my water pump
I have a question, I got this code but it was only over heating at 50 miles per hour or more, then I changed it and the whole car would shut down after 2 miles. and still giving the code for water pump? Could it be something else? How do I check the relays?

You could IF Toyota would sell you just the spinning part.
Hello
I have a question.
I own a 2007 Toyota RAV4 with 3.5 v6 and keep getting p0456 very small Evap leak
I have replaced the gas cap and purge valve and code still comes back
Any suggestions besides charcoal canister ?
I have code's p261b and p0117 on my Prius V , I guess is Coolant pump and Coolant temperature sensor !!! Right ?
My 2012 prius has codes P261B, C1259, C1310
Got same code took of water pump but its not siezed, it spins and pulls out....
Any idea for fix please....

can someone measure the resistivity of the 4 pins on these pumps? old, new, good, bad? I will post my results later today.
My 2013 honda accord hybrid gave me a p2602 code...but when I removed the pump it still spins freely..what else could be the case?
Hi,
My 2014 prius is giving code P148F and heater doesn't work for a long time. Also I noticed overheating light one. Would you recommend replacing the pump? I appreciate your help.
Thank you!
My water pump is making grinding noise without no code and engine nearly around 100k. Does anyone think it's the water pump?
Funny how a German dude loves Toyota rather than a BMW .
Both my mother's and my car Camry had failed water pumps before 60k miles. I knew in the case of my car I had initially issues with the heater and that was coolant was low. How bout code P261 "C" ?? Is this the same but for a different year?
Good
... this video is in error ... the shaft is fixed (does not turn) t.......... he rotor is the moving part

1.25 - 1.5 speed is more my pacing.
He is easier to understand at 1.5 speed.
there is a popular opinion that these pumps last forever, and you need to change the rotor only. seems this may not be true, after all...

Hello, thanks for the video, i was wondering, if the coolant pump was seized why the problem was intermitent?
The pump got progressively harder to spin... Overheating problem started intermittently, as the pump progressively worsened. Pump then overheated and seized from increasing resistance as its bearing failed, possibly due to coolant ingestion.
You talk about your shop... but I cant find its name and address!
Problem is that they are not cheap and 3rd part manufacturers are non existent .
Toyota is turning into Chrysler
They're going to Hell in a handcart like Nissan.I'm keeping my two old Toyotas as long as I can. Then I'll go electric.
Can a bad water pump start the car for 10 mins ?
No, you need a good starter to start the car.
This video is all wrong regards the pump and how it works... the shaft is fully fixed to the assembly so it will never spin at all and it's the rottor what spins freely...
Tear that thing down and see what the failure mode was? for $300 you can get a motor rebuilt. Sheesh!
