I am currently have this code showing up and found that it can be referring to a few causes,.. Firstly, this is not from an expert opinion but my own experience so take this as a side note to check first. Secondly, do not ignore check engine light and be prepared with an obd plug diagnostic plug to 1) check for error code and 2) cancelling, resetting code. Continuing to drive with code can leave you stranded on the hiway and paying expansive towing charge. Reset / cancel code and drive home safely or to your local garage and get that looked into. My first attempt at finding solution was to acertain if it was caused by 1) A failing starter battery? 2) Defective patrol cap or not properly tightening? Or even 'over filling'? 3) Dirty MAS ( mass airflow sensor located cloe to air intake housing), clean that with Specific spray. Result was i tested 1) Battery was old and not holding charge, change that 2) wind electrical tape to tread of patrol cap before buying a new one 3) sprayed and cleaned MAS sensor. Now my engine light is off. And if after all this, it still come on, then error code 261B means a faulty water pump and looking at this very detail and helpful tip, i can replace 'not the whole pump', but only the 'rotor blade' part that i have seen from another RUclips'. Cost only $40 on line,...And if im going to do that, i might as well replace the thermostat, coolant as well. Hope this helps.

I found this advice way too late: I bought a Amazon pump and installed it on a 2010. It worked fine for a while, then I started having intermittent overheating issues. I never suspected the pump because I bought a new one. I replaced all likely culprits with no solution found. My wife took the car to Phoenix and I had to get it towed back. The headgasket is blown at 85,000 miles. I redid the head and put everything back together. It still overheats. (I put the same water pump back in.) In desperation I dropped $400 on a new, genuine Toyota water pump from our local vulture dealership. The car runs fine now even when it's 111F outside. Even under heavy loads the temperature does not go over 195F. I tried to save $250 and wound up spending hundreds more, sustained frustration, many hours of trouble shooting and replacing the head gasket, and mental anguish. Don't go there.... IT IS NOT WORTH the apparent savings, at least in my case.

I was wondering if it was supposed to spin by hand... pulled mine, and it was completely seized. Couldn't get half a turn out of it. As the car started overheating one day, I pulled off, parked for 15 min, then turned the car on, accelerated, shut the engine off and kept rolling. Did that to get it home about 5 miles away x.x glad I know what it was now... flushing the coolant and changing the thermostat and res cap while I'm at it.
If anyone was interested in my symptoms here they are: was driving fine when the overheating light came on in my prius. The engine immediately shut off, and I rolled to a stop. I popped the hood, and saw that the car was overheating and coolant boiling in the res. I blasted my heater all the way to hot, and it was blowing cold. My radiator fan would come on, but it wasnt cooling the car... So I got it home as stated above.
My guess was that it's either the thermostat, or the water pump. 285k miles on both. Pulled them both. Thermostat looks fine, though I'll replace it anyway. Water pump wasn't turning at all.
If you are wondering on time spent, I pulled everything within about 40min first time doing it. It's a pretty easy job, though some bolts are tricky to get to. 5 12mm s on the water pump, and 3 10mm s on the thermostat that is attached on the other side of the water pump.
Paid about $300 for all parts. Another $50 for new coolant. Flushed the system with distilled water. Fill with distilled, run for 15 min, empty. Until you have clean water coming out. Then empty the water, and fill with antifreeze.
    Done.
    Hope info helped somebody. Gl.

I have taken my 2010 prius to the Toyota dealership a few times and they can't seem to help with my "check hybrid system" light that has come on about 2 months after getting an abs repair through them. I get code P0401 and this new code P261b has recently come up. I just got the egr valve replaced 1.5 years ago but it wasn't a toyota part so that could be the issue. I can't tell if one or both of the issues are causing the hybrid system light to come on but the car completely shuts down while driving when the light comes on. PLEASE HELP

Is it a different code for the hybrid system water/coolant pump? I threw a P261B code several months ago and my mechanic replaced the hybrid cooling pump but then several months later the check engine light came on again and they're telling me this time it's the engine pump. But my understanding is P261B has always referred to the engine water pump versus the hybrid inverter water pump. Thanks!

I just bought my daughter a used 2012 Prius, with 161,000 miles. I'm planning to replace the pump and the thermostat in the near future. Is there a procedure for refilling the cooling system and bleeding any trapped air out of it, besides just filling the coolant reservoir?
Another video out there, by Aisin (the supplier of the pumps to Toyota) shows how to put the car into Maintenance Mode after installing the pump, then connecting the car to Techstream. I'm not a dealer service tech, so I don't have access to Techstream. I don't need that just to replace the pump, do I?
