Boyce and trigger were good friends in real life..trigger was a very educated man in real life and wasn't too fond of being compared to trigger in real life.
@JONATHAN SUTCLIFFE I was only trying to say good word for a show, and how ofah had no boundaries, before internet mind you.I didn't want to discuss anything.
I noticed the snow on the ground, suggesting the episode was filmed shortly before the new series started in February 1985. Also this was a bitterly cold winter.
yes, the cast had to do this filming just a few days after they went to the real funeral :( They had begun filming when he passed away so everything had to be hastily re-written. What an amazing job John Sullivan did in difficult conditions.
John Sullivan handled this very well, he was able to write sad stuff into a comedy and a great example of that is the vicar's hat. The balance is perfect and it showed the writing calibre John had, writing calibre we will never see again.
I love only fools I was born 1989 just got the complete boxset for Christmas this beats any modern comedy John sullivan must of been such a genius amazing
I rewatched this recently and it's my 2nd favourite ep after Dates. It struck me this time that Buster, Kenneth, Roger, and both Johns Challis & Sullivan are also gone now as well as Lennard. Thank you for making us laugh you wonderful people.
One thing that always surprised me was that it was such a huge risk for replacing Granddad because when shows replace a major character, the majority of the time it doesn’t work. Since it sometimes makes the shows lose their mojo and the fact that John Sullivan was able to create a completely new character to move in with Del Boy and Rodney is honestly just genius when you think about it. Sullivan took a huge risk and it paid off very well.
Such a wonderful episode, and a first for a comedy series. Buster (Uncle Albert) wrote to the BBC asking to be in Only Fools. Probably the first time an actor ever asked and got a role! Before that he'd only done theatre so this was a big step for him. He fitted the role of Uncle perfectly. Written in the stars.
I love how Trigger is a top guy despite his low intelligence. Was always there for Del and even though he didn't know the right words had Dels back everytime. Like with the Driscol brothers when everyone ran of Trig was the only one that refused to leave del side until del boy said he be OK.
My favourite episode of all. Del's speech to Rodney is the high point of the series to me and sums up what it's all about. David Jason's acting is worthy of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Damn! The acting in this scene is phenomenal! Considering Lennie’s funeral was only a week before this episode aired, it must’ve been so hard filming this. David Jason, especially, is amazing in this clip. Seeing him blow into the handkerchief breaks for my heart.
I remember seeing this for the first time, I was so upset & thought the show wouldn't go on but thank goodness it did. Oh how I wish I could go back to this time. They knew how to write/ make decent programmes. Best TV comedy programme for me, sheer brilliance, nothing comes near.
When you watch this, you almost forget how sad an occasion this is. That’s the genius of John Sullivan. And Trigger is the sort of friend everyone needs. He might be stupid beyond words at times but he is the best friend anyone could ever have, period
And when David and Nicholas turned up to film this scene as soon as they laid eyes on either the grave or coffin, can't remember which one, both men broke down in tears for real
RIP , Lennard Pearce .... ⚘⚘⚘😢😢 Thanks 4 ever for ALL the laughs you brought us !!! I'll never forget you grandpa ! ❤❤❤ Felt like you were my gramps as well 😢😢😢😢😢
Old Lady: I love a nice funeral.... Del Boy: Would you hang about, there's two more after this! This show could combine seriousness with laughter to absolute shear perfection.
If the BBC ever do a classic comedy-drama compilation DVD, this episode should be the OFAH episode that should be on it! Sullivan's writing here was in top form, having the typical OFAH spirit in there, more ducking and diving with Del, Albert and Rodney, but amongst that, he didn't forget about what and why this episode was so special and so magical. Losing Lennard in real life was also very upsetting to the audience as well as David, Nick, etc. We all remember all the stuff Del's grandad had done over the years, from getting arrested in Spain, from moaning about cheeseburgers, and unintentionally smashing chandeliers. Lennard brought so much into the show from the small period he was on it. You can see the pain in the cast's eyes in this scene, especially Nick, he wasn't just acting grief, he was actually in floods of tears once David starts leading him away from the grave. Watching an interview with David Jason himself, he said that one idea was to carry on with a lookalike to Lennard, and they could take it from there. I'm glad that wasn't the case, not only would it be wrong and insulting, but also, Lennard was not only Rodney and Del's grandad, but the nation's own grandad, so it just would not have worked!
FYI... This was filmed at kensington & chelsea cemetary in the mid 80s. When my mother walked past the entrance she saw the Rodney actor outside looking glum an in a suit. We later realised he'd just shot the funeral scene, thus was sad.
One little character detail I like is Del's sunglasses, he's wearing them so people can't see his eyes watering. Plus seeing Rodney standing over grandad's grave is hard to watch.
Unfortunately, the Grandad man died so that's when writer and creator John created Uncle character as new roll to replace him. Therefore, such a meeting was unlikely to ever occur...BUT, what I will say is that it's actually possible that the two ACTORS (NOT characters) had met in real life. Thank you for your comment
“Why don’t you hang about? There’s two more after this.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 That may have been a bit nasty on Del’s behalf, but in his defence, he was distraught.
Lenerd Pearce was only 69 when he passed away . Tho his character grandad was meant to be at least 10 years older . Just think if his health had been good he would had stayed on the show so much longer even untill the end??? But then there would be no uncle Albert!!
All we can do is speculate about how many more series there might have been had Lennard Pearce not died. The situation and the backstory which resulted in the introduction of Uncle albert was handled brilliantly. I can remember people saying Uncle Albert would never be as good as Grandad. Replacing Grandad with a new character that Del and Rodney barely knew gave the show a bit more range. Lennard Pearce and Buster merryfield played their respective parts brilliantly.
@@geoffpoole483 yes true. Apprently they did briefly consider recasting grandad with a different actor but quickly dismissed it, as all cast thought it would be disrespected to Leonard pierce. They also considered bringing in long auntie instead of uncle Apptently Leonard loved doing the show and was very proud of it.
