The transition from grandad to uncle Albert was seamless and grandad's passing and uncle Albert joining us a masterpiece of comic writing and brilliantly acted
Yeah the actor for uncle Albert sold it so well to a point where we as the audience genuinely thought it could be his brother in real life. Grandad started the run off well and Albert perfectly took over the 3rd man role.
Having a funeral for granddad on Only Fools and Horses gave us the audience some sort of closure for the character. It was a tribute to Lennard Pearce, very well done, very sad, very poignant, while very funny.
Who would have thought lightning would strike twice in the same place... Lennard AND Buster both made their parts their own and utterly magical. RIP both of them. Great actors.
Grandad was really good at giving the excellent finish to a piece of dialogue, del boy tees it up, Rodney continues, Grandad finishes it off and gets the biggest laugh.
I was too young when Only Fools started so I'd only known Uncle Albert. The my mum bought the complete set in the mid 90s and I went back and watched the early episode I'd never seen. Leonard Pearce was brilliant as Grandad. "It wasn't me, it was my brain". Classic.
I was about to post an identical post to yours. I got the box set for Christmas 10 years ago. I had no idea there was a Grand Dad character at the start. I think it took me until Easter to watch the whole thing.
It was horribly sad. Grandad was just a part of our lives and brilliantly played. But Buster Merrifield did an unbelievably great job filling in his place. An unenviable task... Yet he did it with total professionalism, charm and gentleness.
It's extremely rare that a great character liked grandad is replaced with an equally great character like uncle Albert. You could almost believe that they were actually brothers.
One of Albert’s best quotes was in what should have been the last episode where sell tells him if he says during the war one more time so Albert being smart says “during the 1939-1944 conflict with Germany” quality writing 😂😂
As a massive fan of the show, watching this really touched my heart ❤ Never knew they had Lennards funeral the week before this episode 🥺 That leaves a lump in the throat. A very touching moment.
I have Mr Pearce 's autograph, it's on a 'Of Mice and Men' program from 1984 (Mermade Theature). West End of London and Christopher Ryan (young ones) was staring in it. We went with the school, great play, great evening. RIP Mr Pearce you played a blinder sir.
2:00 shows him filming the episode “Hole in one”, but he died before all his scenes had been shot, so they later did the episode with uncle Albert instead.
40 Years on... I probably won't be able to watch this but he was a terrific actor. I just like to watch these episode imagining they are all alive, youthful and happy, having fun and we can laugh along with them and enjoy the moment again and again
To find an Uncle Albert to follow up Grandad, was simply incredible. The whole show was just magic. A masterpiece. How it all just came together so perfectly, seems impossible. But the impossible was made possible, somehow.
Bless Lennard Pearce. An absolute legend. This episode was a total masterpiece. The emotion and acting from both David and Nicholas was some of the best I've ever seen. For John Sullivan to come up with this script and introduce a new character that would go on to be a fan favourite, all in the space of a week, is remarkable.
The bit where del says families im sick of it.. all they ever do let you down, disappoint you and then break ur hart nearly Crying.. heartbreaking.. David Jason is an amazing actor
The most beautiful element was how Uncle Albert's character was not a copy of Lennard's, and yet it was like he was always there. I think both of them proved this show is not just about a family on the screen, but a family of everyone who loved the show.
I grew up watching fools and horses it was fantastic and now I’ve got every single episode downloaded to a hard drive but I still faithfully watch from start to end including the specials even the one with David Beckham and the behind-the-scenes
I think it was not just a very respectful thing to do, to have a funeral for the character, done totally seriously and have an episode about how different people process grief and the grieving process in general. Was fantastic, how he made it so hilarious on top is a testament to his writing abilities.
I once saw Buster Merryfield whilst working in the Clerical Medical building in Richmond. We were banging on the glass to get his attention, Buster turned and gave us a lovely smile. I subsequently discovered he was a local resident and that he was a retired bank manager whom took up acting late in life. RIP Buster.
No one could replace grandad, he rocked the part. And I have to say the way they handled that episode was great other than I think they should have delayed his replacement at least an episode or two out of respect. Other than that I was impressed by the actors being able to still act and wonder how much pain was actually in their acting. Love this series and those in it. More fantastic British Comedy. And thank you for not just glossing over the funeral etc like other series have done. Still brings me to tears
I think they had to continue initially through force from the BBC to get the series done..... but it was around this time David Jason was ready for leaving, and had effectively told everyone that series 5 was his last ("Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" was pretty much written as Del's send off), and going forward they planned a spin off show to revolve around Rodney and Micky Pearce, but David got a bit of spring in his step after To Hull and Back, and changed his mind once production of series 6 had started)
That scene when del loses it was priceless. Such good dialogue from del to Rodney. That last sentence got to me they bring you down then they break your bloody heart. I think was what del said
It's funny Christine Whitfield because Rodney picked up one the the urns ⚱️and told Del it contains Arthur's ashes as he was referring to Trigger's grandad Arthur and Del Boy got confused and said "Arthur's ashes, that's the black bloke who won Wimbledon 🎾 innit?" LOL! The black bloke he mentioned who won Wimbledon 🎾 was actually called Arthur Ashe and he got confused.😂😂😂😂😂😂
Many favourite lines from Grandad, but my alltime favourite was '' well I'd have to think twice''! I always wonder what it would have been like with g'dad saying ''well you try walking it son'' in the Hole In One episode, that Albert eventually said.RIP Lennard, thanks for the laffs.
The whole thing happened in a way that was meant to be. The combining of reality and fiction with a clever little joke to keep the humor alive. I’m sure he would be smiling and wishing his fellow actors the very best. Also his replacement was not a disappointment, buster merryfield for me was absolute comedy gold. Well worthy of the role and fitted in perfectly. Uncle Albert was my favourite character of the two, not to take anything away from Lenard pierce.
It was never like grandad was recasted or replaced, but just saying goodbye to one character and introducing another, still on a personal level and that personal level was family. Albert had a couple of stories about him and his brother and it all played so well in the writing and performance, it was all so beautiful. John Sullivan is truly a once in a lifetime genius, as is all the cast of only fools. We will never have a writer like him again, nor will we have a more perfectly cast set of actors. Only Fools and Horses is, without a doubt, THE most perfectly done show of all time.
Such a sad and powerful espiode they hsd to go on for everyone granddad excellant character like uncle albert never forget talented and class people ever .
I remember Lennard Pearce dying, but I wasn't aware it was during filming that he passed away. I can hear the sadness in both David's and Nicholas' voices about it, Lennard was clearly a much loved member of the team
I think I read the info in David Jason’s autobiography, he said grandad got ill and filming never resumed. I know he was in License to Drill which was an Only Fools and Horses educational video for schools. It was on You Tube years back, but taken down I guess because of copyright, this was said to be the last thing he filmed, so I could be wrong.
The episode with Albert’s introduction was a masterpiece. I remember Albert taking Rodney to one side and explaining why Del having a laugh was his way of relieving pressure…that stayed with me as I knew the dreaded day would come when I lost my mum and there was nobody there to talk to. You don’t get that human touch writing anymore sadly.
Only fools horses was such a classic sitcom. Especially with Lenord perce as grandad. Also very funny as emotional other. Interesting also so many levels. Also insight British working class. I honestly don’t think there will be another sitcoms in the future. I live east coast of Australia. Middle class Australian l found the series so interesting.
I always forget how well spoken Nicholas Lyndhurst is. I haven't really enjoyed his other programmes but I think he was absolutely born to pay Rodney, accent is spot on
That episode handled the death of the actor and character perfectly. Just the right balance of taking things seriously with the occasional ice breaking gag to lift the mood. I'm against the idea of killing off characters just because the actor dies, but their hands really were tied on this occasion.
I'd love for more blurays of the show to be released and for Lennard's original footage from Hole in One to be included. I think once upon a time it might have been seen as a morbid extra but nowadays it is seen more as honouring him to show his final performances. Much like the Star Trek The Next Generation blurays included David Rappaport in The Most Toys before he died and was replaced by Saul Rubineck.
“Has anyone seen my hat?” Is actually a very very important line in history of the show. It shows that no matter what tragedy might befall the Trotters, might befall the cast, the humour is still alive. How brilliant how clever, to so poignantly throw a clear symbol of a character (grandads hat) into his grave with him, only for the audience to realize it was the vicars hat instead. That line, Has anyone seen my hat? probably saved the show, and proved it could still be funny despite such a sad loss.
I agree with all the positive comments on here - great show and writing. However, the title leads us to believe that this will be a 'lost episode'.....
Loved the character of grandad and preferred him to Uncle Albert. Wish we had more with grandad and wish we had more of seasons very similar of those 1 to 4. Felt they changed from S5 onward. S5 was close to 1-4, with 6 being very far away from them all. We could only wish
My favourite lines of 'Grandad ' were the episode where Rodney and Del split up the partnership "what is it Rodney a wendy house" and the one where they find out Rodney is seeing an older woman .."even i,d have to think twice" ....absolutely brilliant....
I think Pearce's finest moment on the show was when he talks about the soldiers coming back from war and being hidden away from sight... There isn't any jokes, no laughter - just pure and simple horrific memories
That was BRILLIANT. I just watched 👀 it again the other day. The chandelier cost 5000 pounds to buy. They had to do it in one take without laughing. The crew had hanky shoved in their mouths to stop them from laughing. 😂😂😂
It would be interesting to know, what the original plot was for the Hole in One episode with Grandad. In the images you can clearly see him outside the court in the wheelchair similar to what Albert was after being found out. Albert's reason for defrauding the brewery was to pay for grandad's headstone. I wonder what story they wrote for Leonard Pearce in the role.
Its a easy script to rework, as you only really need to change the two bookends of the story.... probably Del has a fine or bill to pay, and that is why Grandad did it.
In the episode Albert mentions they'd both (him and grandad ie his brother) would be on the act in their younger days. Weirdly the episode works better with Albert in the reworking , and I prefer grandad.
@therebel4332 @clark82 Yeah, I agree with you both. In the original script, it would've been Grandad that undertook the parachute training, and it was him that deliberately fell down the holes/open cellars, anytime he needed easy money. Settling out of court in the process. The Trotters were broke in the episode, and Rodney had spent the last of their money on sun tan lotion in the middle of winter. So Grandad's reason for doing it was probably just to help them out financially
I'm currently going through my complete boxset. Currently on series 7. Next episode is Chance Of A Lunchtime when Raquel revealed she was pregnant with Damien. Only Fools is one of those classic sitcoms where you don't remember your first episode. It was always there in the background.
Your video here is really well done. I hadn't realised that Grandad died mid filming, and that must have been particularly hard having attended his funeral the week before then filming the funeral for Grandad. I always thought it was very well done and incredibly, sympathetically handled. Uncle Albert was a treat so luckily it worked out very well but it makes you wonder, if the series hadn't been commissioned where it would have gone and what would have happened.
The transition from grandad to uncle Albert was seamless and grandad's passing and uncle Albert joining us a masterpiece of comic writing and brilliantly acted

It was such a shame to lose Leonard Pearce as grandad, but such a stroke of luck to gain Buster Merryfield as Uncle Albert.
