Love me some retro bassin'. Nice work, Brendan!
How many people here see a Brendan Miller video pop up and just automatically click on it? Me.
Fishermen today are sooo spoiled! I remember the old old stuff my grandpa had to use in the 60's when they were poor as church mice and had to fish for their supper. Steel rods, wooden plugs (they were called plugs back then) and braided dacron lines. The water sprayed off the line when they would cast or retrieve. They still managed to catch some whopper pike and muskies and big stringers of perch and pickerel too. I also remember the family fish fry Sunday dinners too!😊
but the fish are also getting smarter although i do agree lots of fisherman nowadays spends lots of money on fancy lures
Did you do a grandpa catch and cook ?
@@jesinegassab5930 fish are smarter or people are dumber. I can often still catch sunfish on a bare hook. Just an example of the bare minimum but still
@@rossmarty9013 true i've also caught bluegill with a bare hook but sometimes if you are fishing really pressured water a vintage wooden lure just won't cut it
@@jesinegassab5930 true they get finicky. Gotta pull out the life bait and ned rigs
The date of this reel is a 1966. The EE on the side is the date code. Also fill that reel up to 1/8 of an inch of the outside of the spool with line and it will cast much much better and retrieve much faster! Great video and keep them coming.
Is your reel?
The Heddon River Runt “Spook” refers to the fact that it was made in plastic, originally the River Runt was made in wood. BTW- both versions and many Heddon lures are collectibles. Some of the plastic “Spook” versions can be very valuable for rarer colors. Yours was perfect bc it was in used condition and perfect for fishing. They catch fish now just as good as they did new. I love old gear and much of it was actually made in the USA which is why it’s still around today. Great job on your video and you kept pushing on no matter what obstacles you ran into! The success!! Awesome. Love to see more like this, maybe go back by decades fishing a setup from each--well....on second thought that might get expensive eventually as the gear becomes more and more valuable and collectible (of course depending on the make/model/condition).
I've got a tackle box full of these and other vintage lures still in their packages and never opened. Like new.
That's very awesome! fishing with old gear is an experience into the past and it's very fun. I'll be doing some vintage fishing myself soon! 👍
Very informative and good quality content! Keep it up!
Very nice.
I have boxes of my grandpa's tackle and lures. I'm scared to use it lest I snag and lose them. I need to build display cases for them.
Thanks for taking us along on your vintage experiment.
I foresee that new farm pond being the setting for some future episodes.
Also:
Yes, Brendan, you *are* a hipster in rural Ohio. 👍🏼
I'm going to Wolf Run Lake tomorrow. You're invited.
They make a plastic called feather light that floats you could make copies of them easily and you won't have to worry about loosing them.
Rod: breacks

I fish vintage whenever it's practical. From South Africa.
The lure at 6:40 makes a face like "I'm old I'm cold let me die!"
I use the river runt spook still too.
River runts and Canadian wigglers are some super fun and cool lures.
Man this is a wild video.. i never really thought I'd see someone else throwing out heddon plugs..especially these vintage one. My dad gave me a bunch his father left him. A huge upvote from me, cause ive never caught anything with em
Actually used one of those antique plugs today without knowing how old it is! It is a Heddon tiny floating runt, and I caught 2 bass! Goes to show you, old lures CAN still catch fish in modern times!
Incredible fishing congratulations, this place has beautiful fish it seems here in Brazil where I fish.👍🎣
My main reel I use is a Daiwa GS 135 from the 70s. I absolutely love it
Love it, nailed some nice fish with Dad's 55 yr old Pluegger spinning rod with 60 yr old Zebco 22 pushbutton. Lots of fun!
For heavy duty fishing the Pflueger Rockets (1355'1365 & 1375) are tough as tanks and smooth as a Rolex watch
Had no clue this was new when I clicked it that was a pleasent surprise love your videos and cant wait till the next one
Shakespeare's model and date codes can be confusing because of the way they worded them. Model EE on the side of the reel is the date code. That's actually a Model 1924, the EE refers to the year it was made, which was in the 1960s. It's hard to make out, but in the writing above the date code where it says Direct Drive, etc., it should say No. 1924, maybe No.1924MS, meaning Mono Spool, referring to the actual model of reel.
Finally a video! I have a vintage shimano bantam reel it's all silver it nice
I've got a hundred vintage lures hanging on a custom board.
Y'know you should have more fish offs with your brother
Very nice reel,I need one of those on my collection.
I’ve always wanted to try something like this.
Love the old fishing tackle videos would love it more if you edited it in super 8 style or put a black and white filter on. Keep the hits coming.
I do like that he uses new line on it. I used an old reel I got from the flea market with ice fishing braided line which was the closest I could use to the original line that was used on the reel and it kinda sucked. This was like 1992 so the reel was only $20 and my dad had an old rod up in the rafters in the basement. I got one trout on iit and I gave up on it.
Cool video . I'm doing kind of the samething with my grandfather's old rod , I paired it with a similar age reel and lure . But I'll be using it from a canoe , trolling , no casting. BTW , I'm 66 yrs old . Thx . Good luck .
The reel is actually more modern than what your research led you to believe. What you have there is the 1924MS (monofilament spool) model. Monofilament line didn't exist in 1924. The 1924 in the name is not indicative of the year the reel was made. If you look closely you will see where it says "Model EF". The EF is the year code for that model. The EF date code translates to the year 1965, the date that model came out. Just thought you would like to know a little more info about this reel. I really liked this video. Keep making more of them.
He smoked that bait, right in the mouth.- Brendan Miller 2020. God Bless!
I have the red and white one
BY FAR THE BEST RUclipsR EVERRRR
I love fishing I love vintage stuff i need to try this 🎣
What’s up great videos love them keep up the great work
Many years ago my dad picked up an old 9’ steel bass rod for my brother and not knowing any better he cut it down to a smaller size and resoldered the eyes back on . Wish we still had it original
son when you use those old reels like that use black threaded line about 10 -15 lb. test it is heavy duty thread and does not coil up or rat nest like nylon monofiliment line does.and to fix that vintage rod just take a hack saw and cut just below the metal shank rim to square it off the remove the broken piece off the insert with pliers and if you have enough space on the bottom female end apply a coat of black gasket maker to the male end and insert and wipe off excess gasket material of with a rag and let sit overnight.you can buy the tube of gasket maker at napa or any other auto parts store. i like your content and i subscribed i too collect vintage fishing gear and i was born and raised in dowagiac michigan the home of heddon lures and fishing gear .i have a lot of those river runts you used in this video .in all 55 years of my age collecting these i dont have anything modern .
The real vintage on this channel is brendans fabulous world of fishing
Super awesome video!
The best way for increasing line return is take a wine cork of larger diameter and put it on. With a decent auger or drill bit to make a diameter close to the reel spool, drill out the from the top to bottom, not the side. Slice the cork in two, lengthwise and then you can just wrap tape on like fishing line. Works well to get that old but modern feel and appeal.
You are amazing my friend I love your fishing videos 👍
Heddon river Runts I still use for Bass and Pike, Balsa, Plastic spinning rod old Penn Bait caster don't matter..I do use Braid as a backing and quality leader material..only areas i go with current Technology
Sixty years ago I fished with my old uncles who only used bait casting reels paired to spring steel rods. Their rods were spooled with braided Dacron line. It was extremely limp line that made the bait casting experience more tolerable. I never developed the knack for casting those old school reels. When technology advanced to the point of the free spool bait casting I splurged and bought a Daiwa Millionaire 3HM in 1977. It casted like a dream with no backlash. Still have that reel and it still gets the job done. As an added note: You can buy a replacement metal ferrule to fix that problem. A friend of mine built a new bait casting rod using a metal ferrule made of aluminum.
It's hard to cast with that reel because (1) it isn't lubricated and (2) there is not enough line on it. And the rod handle/reel mount are balanced so that the reel handle is pointing upward not horizontally when casting overhead. Sharpen the hooks on the old lures. Dull rusty hooks do more damage to the fish and then they get off. Looks like a decent rod, length and action, except that corroded brass ferule -- replace it.
Love this vid👍
My dad has a vintage bait caster one of the first ones ever made and it is awesome!
My dad gave me his old one
How old is it?
When it comes to bass I think sometimes we get to technical this video proves there's no need to turn bass fishing into rocket science
I used a similar setup as a kid. You need to ditch the mono though. These reels work much better with period correct braided line.
You should do more vintage fishing videos. You should go to flea markets and garage sales and by vintage gear and use it. Awesome video by the way 👍👍
Not sure how there are dislikes on this video but to each his own.(non fisherman) so just have to over look the trolls in life.Great work Brendan always great to see a new video on the list 🤟🏽
Ive went fishing every day. Not tomorroq the south got some rain tomorrow. Itl be severe
I still use Mepps every single time I fish. Can catch anything on them. Ive caught my pb trout and largemouth on a Mepps #3 silver.
Can you catch on your own hand made fishing line? no rod and no reel straight up hand line with the rock lure you made maybe even hand made hooks for it this time.
Awesome I think that lure is called a river runt I’m 80 so I remember the lures in your video keep up the good work and GOD bless
That lure at 6:36 is called a Heddon River Runt Spook. Not a Hidden River Hunt,Lol!
get yourself a Diawa 4290... a fantastic bullet proof spinning reel... 200 yards of 12 mono size... you'll love it
Hello Brendan I hope you are doing well I miss you my friend I hope to see new fishing video soon please make more vintage fishing reels please and luers 👍🏼💪🏼🎣
Hi found my father or grandfather old fishing rod that has a similar look to yours. I was wondering if you could put a modern reel on a vintage pole
I have the same one but a little older version
Old baitcaster reels were spooled with braided dacron line, not monofilament. Braid will cast a lot better with decent diameter (dacron would have been a lot thicker than modern poly line for the same test line.) Monofilament will backlash too easily and also catch behind the spool cheeks on old reels. Best to understand what what was actually done if you want to imitate the older ways.
Im betting yes. Still have all my old jitterbugs & mepps I used as s kid (ok I replaced em all)
Nice bass man
I have two of on baitcSter and on spin cast that are on my wall
Old is gold
My grandpa had an old fishing pole that was square, weirdest thing ever, I wish I would've kept it.
Those metal ferrules were always a problem!
Reel sounds dry! Suggest a good cleaning, gear lube and a drop of oil on the level wind, and spool adjustments could make your reel more user friendly with better performance. Nice Demonstration of old tackle.
Your next video should be most satisfying things that can happen while fishing.
The rod must have been a Lews 😂
Hey, don’t know if you’ll see this comment, but I love fishing with vintage lures and tackle, I actually caught my PB largemouth with a Jeff on river runt spook. I fished it with a slow retrieve and let it float to the top every so often
More fishing videos!!
I legit thought about this video idea but never mentioned it
You should get a vintage bass rod and reel combo and actually use what they used back in the day for bass. That rod and reel was made for like ocean fishing.
Looks like the one he had is only useful for dropping a bait or trolling off a boat, not made for casting that's for sure.
The two lures are river runt spook made by heddon during around late 1920 early 1930 those were made of wood I have some made of plastic!!!
the reel sounds like it need to be repaired.. I wonder if you could find a breakdown for it.. take it apart clean it up.. maybe replace some parts if you can.. if you could get that thing running smoother.. but ya its so old.. and if you break it.. its probably better to just fix the pole and keep it as a old combo.. people buy stuff like that just for display. nice vid.. I think that old lure has some damn good action on it.. I think I might want to try to carve one like that.
That almost looked like a plug and trolling reel lol
Do some more making lures vids PLZ your amazing and I'm going to make my own fishing youtube challenge
i believe those first 2 plugs are " river runts" by heddon
Any ideas where to get a rod tip for an old wallet international ocean city medium heavy 5'1 fishing rod? Mines missing the tip and I'd love to restore the rod. It's such an amazing rod with the wooden handle and what not I'd like to slap my old abu Garcia ambassador 5500 on it
Good job.
It cant find in amazon. How to buy vintage bait casting machin
I use old school fishing equipment all the time.
I am the same way with vintage / classic / old school things.
Things were built to last, made to be user serviced and relatively easy to do so, and I really just don't like the modern aesthetic of most things these days.
Theres lots of great technological advancements today, but things used to look so much better.
Modern fishing reels have absolutely nothing to offer me, they generally aren't made to last and none of the features or advancements in them matter to me.
I don't need a dozen ball bearing infinite anti reverse or an ultralight high speed gear ratio.
Silent anti reverse is nice, but I can live with clickers.
I'll use modern lures, but that's about it.
Brendan your videos are amazing please continue making the videos with the amazing content
Wish they still made those solid fiberglass rods
I have a baitcaster from probably the 70s that my dad gave me
Strictly speaking, that is not a freespool reel, since the handle rotates when the spool does, and cannot be disengaged.
The lures you referred to as “plugs” are actually Heddon River Runts. I use river runts, they are very effective! I have many “vintage” lures by Heddon that I use. I also favor early to mid 1960’s Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000’s.
Agreed, old ambassadeur's work like a charm, assuming all the parts are intact.
Clint Larvenz All of mine get completely disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, and re greased and oiled. They work like a charm. I actually own 5 of them! Just love the way they work. One of mine is due for a cleaning as it’s occasionally making a un wanted click noise.
It's a Heddon River RUNT but hey, who's counting! 😄
Hope y’all staying safe
Love this content. Makes you appreciate what we have today. But just think 100 years ago that was modern technology. Great job sir...still top 2 channels in my opinion. Really waiting for something to come out on your other channel. I hope you have something in the works for that. God Bless.
Thanks brother I appreciate it 👍
These rods Aernt 100 years old but okay
@@Stackinn_js 🤔
Us coastal folk call those "hair jigs" bucktails
Old school Tom had this one (cat fishing 1940s episode)
I have one of those in red
my dad used them when i was a kid caught a lot of bass with them.
Awesome
JOIN THE GOOGAN SQUAD
Good Stuff! How about a video on your own 5 or more oldest lures, 5 oldest reels, 5 oldest rods. pros - cons.... Stuff you own
i like vintage stuff to
I think those reels were meant for trolling with braided line
Awesome content brother -from a Day 1 Brendan fabulous world of fishing sub :)
the first plug you used is a good one. it is a heddon, they were the best back in the day. as you can tell by my handle "olskool" i am from back in the day,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
My grandpa has some haha 😂
