It's odd- a band from Andorra utilizing a Swedish-pioneered metal subgenre of American origins, releasing an album with a distinct classical Japanese sound. Metal truly is from everywhere

Recently I've realized that this album is based on the book and life of Musashi Miyamoto an
excelent samurai of the Edo age from Japan that has an amazing story.

Amazing coming back to this album and this comment and seeing i already gave it a like 7 years ago haha, still giving me chills!
The vocals on this album are slowly growing on me. Purity is good. And it seems after that the growl vocals get "better". Still too high toned for me. I prefer the "traditional" death-growls (Bloodbath, Deaden, Hypocrisy, Unleashed, Amon Amarth, Opeth, Necrophagist etc.) However, on Spiritual Migrations the vocals seem fine to me. I think it's the music and the vocals of this album don't sit together quite right. It's a pitch/tone thing for me. Please keep "then you're not as death metal as I am" comments to yourself. I'm too death metal to care...
in my opinion the growls sometimes( most of the time for me ) dont really blend well with the instrumental wich is very well made .

Holy Jesus's mom holy mother Marry, this Album is perfect, I'm so friggin' out of space right now, from the art style to the perfectly executed concept of Progressive Melodic death metal with classic Japanese sounds, just flawless, love it! (Fun fact, I know this band for 1 hour now)

If I hadn't gone an researched about Andorra, I would have assumed it was some mystical fantasy kingdom. Though, all I needed to know about Andorra is that they have awesome metal, this video makes that quite apparent.
Absolutely mindblowing. How do these guys even have fingers anymore? You'd think that after that solo on Fall to Rise that the guitarist's fingers would have been shredded off he was jamming so hard!
I will never forget how this album makes me feel, it's just amazing, all goosebounds and beyond that, it makes me close my eyes and think, feel and rejoice. To listen it while reading the lyrics is also so meaningful and amazing, the solos are magnificent, the instrumentals from another world, I don't know how to describe it, my prose is not that rich to explain how it makes me feel but god damn it, you guys are the best, the first time I listened this album I was like 14 years old, right now I am 23 and you still are my favorite band. Greetings from Venezuela.
There simply aren't words sufficient to describe the power of this music, as you say. what i find beautiful is the fac that all of us have felt our individual versions of that same feeling in the many years we've all been listening to it. makes you feel less alone
I just stumbled upon Persefone recently, probably a mention in another thread. Holy cow are these guys super epic. Taking a little longer to warm up to the vocals in this versus Spiritual Migration, but I have to admit, I still prefer these vocals to James LaBrie.

Oh my god it took me an age to realize. The refference to Gorin no Sho (The book of five rings) by Miyamoto Musashi. I read it long ago and I only got the kick of it now. It is precisely in the same order as well, with the Void Book at the end. These guys are even more impressive to me now, beside the fact that I can't stop listening to this album.
Yeah... Robert Greene quotes from that book a lot.

I just heard of them, and their album spiritual migration... I was pretty certain I heard a Japanese influence in some parts, and when looking them up I found out they made Shin-Ken. It cool to see that they're influenced in so many ways! They're a great band, creating a cd based on a genre and country/culture I extremely like!

Why the hell is everyone so concerned about the vocals? Why are you even listening to death metal? Why aren't you listening to rap and pop, genres where vocals ARE the instrument of interest?The thing that determines the genre more than anything is the guitar. Growling and screaming could mean death metal, black metal, Viking metal, metalcore, deathcore, grindcore, slam metal or even folk metal, progressive metal, and believe it or not, power metal in rare cases (even Dragonforce used it briefly in a couple of their songs on their new album, although there are other bands like Seraphil I believe that use growling for at least the good majority of the song). Listen to any genre then another and the first difference you notice is the guitar.Deathcore has a bunch of low chugs that are all supposed to be like a gut punch, black metal has a lot of tremolo picking and octave harmony, death metal has a complete lack of theory that makes it into absolute chaos (especially EDM and tech death), while power metal uses a lot of power chords and tremolo picking, and often switches between a classical major and minor key in the same song.
+Alucard the Aichomancer well i can see that u understand this shit quite a bit but i gotta say that i didnt find a metalcore band with growls, neither did i find melodic death metal with screams :P if u listen closely when a melodeath band vocals are higher pitched in some parts of the songs, u will notice its a growl, not a scream. but i encountered some deathcore bands that use shrieks and growls :D
+Alucard the Aichomancer metal genres are defined by all of the composition of the title. It is also important to consider reflectively the history of both the band and the music being played. it is NOT just the guitar that defines the genre.Do not forget this please.
Dark Vramp I understand that I was just pointing out that it makes the biggest difference because in metal as a whole the guitar is what gives metal it's punch as a whole. There's no other genre where the distortion is ever used as heavily.
Youre wrong about one thing though
Tech death e.t.c dont lack theory, they utilizes theory more than any other genre.
If you know the time signatures, you can count along just perfectly.

"Schinken" (cf. Shin-Ken) means "ham" in german, which made me chuckle a little, when I first listened to it. Superior album though.

Oh...The guitars...the vocals...bass, drums..and PIANO.....deliver such...that it is such a shame that this band isn't better known....perhaps because most..would prefer a Laurie clean vocalist mostly....but...while we sit and await a new Dream Theater offering...this band delivers something that many more well known bands can't....indeed...which makes them even more valuable for those that enjoy discovering bands...music outside of the typical mainstream box....These dudes are from Andorra...and they have put their home on the map indeed. Kinda reminds me of a concoction of Opeth, Riverside, Dream Theater, MYRATH, Anathema, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, and of course...those symphonic elements of Therion and some Artension, with some Porcupine Tree/Floyd, Magic Pie, Carcass, Solution 45, Scar Symmetry, AVATAR, Gorefest elements....which equals...a most unique sound of their own...WOWZA!

Im falling in love with these guys work...the instrumental is so good its insane! Im slowly getting into death metal but I would prefer having them sing more often with clean vocals like in Purity, please keep up this kind of masterpieces!
Dude I gotta disagree. I think it's the mixing because his (the vocalists) tone and precision is on point. Not to mention the rarity of finding someone who does that manner of cleans differently. And as I listen it just gets better, variation has improved in only the first song.

Christopher McLaren nope, the clean vocals are performed by the keyboarder. the grunts, growls, screams and shouts are done by the main singer and partially one of the guitarists.
on spiritual migration, the guitarist stopped singing so its only the main singer and the keyboarder for the cleans.

The piano-work in The Water Brook reminds me of the first The Sims game.
As their least refined work this album stands out in a very special raw way that is just.... right. Such gorgeous composition, brilliant licks, quirky mix, and fun tones throughout. Truly a masterpiece.

Why is Andorra band making an album in Japanese?
That isn't really anything new. There are lots of bands from all over the world that make albums based on other cultures. Trivium's last album was entitled "Shogun" and the band Nile is from South Carolina but all their albums are based on ancient Egyptian mythology.

It's a concept album, essentially they made a melodic deathmetal-style soundtrack to a famous 1950's Japanese film, though not sure what film that would be (possibly seven samurai?)
