    Been looking for a nice Sheffield-like design. This seems to fit my interest in that area. As a young boy (9-10yoa), I purchased a Sheffield for like 21 dollars and some change (I remember having my stepfather spot me some of the cost, as I only had like $20). I'm looking forward to receiving this knife in a few days. This video looks to be about 7 years old, and the price I paid was around $195. Not too awful bad of a price increase in my opinion.

    I can't say that that knife would be my most practical choice, but it sure is appealing. I love the looks and the fact that they went with their 440c.
    I really like this one.

    I’ve looked at this knife for a few years, but the 440C steel kinda turned me away, but seeing your review of this knife has got me sold on it as always. I always look for a review from you on a knife before I decide to make a purchase and as always you never let me down.

    440C is my favorite stainless steel for any knife. Again, for KNIVES, I think it's better than any of the "super" steels. There isn't a "super" steel made than I'd want to be caught in the backcountry with when things go bad.
    440C not only has good HRC, anything harder is not something you want to sharpen in the woods. It takes an excellent edge, and holds it very while, and is more than tough enough to stand up to any task.
    This said, I'd far rather have high quality 1095 in the wilderness. It has advantages that could save your life in a true survival situation, which is why most woodsmen use it.

    That looks like a really great knife! Not too big, not too small, built like a tank - and great looking! Also, the price point is less than I expected from such a knife maker.
    Great review!

    A great video Aaron on a knife I've got in mind. I'm UK based and so don't have nearly as much choice as Americans but these can be bought here for £198. It looks great and you've covered every aspect I could have wished for. Your presentation style is excellent and you're very likeable.

    I still have my father's WW2 knives and this DM has a very nice classic look, the choil adds a good level of control even for close in slashing. I wish the cutting edge was a couple of inches longer but no complaints not even with the price. Good review, thank you.

    Modern soldier knife selection approach recommendation follows.
    1. Skills - I went through US Army basic training at a time when bayonet fighting was not in the curriculum. Many years ago. So, I had a hunk of useless metal. If you cannot find a knife fighting class, then take a basic escrima case over and over again and you will learn the basic strikes and defenses against the basic strikes.
    2. Carry position. There are a number of carry positions. Whatever you think you are going to spend on a knife, you are going to end up buying a second sheath. The problem is the bulk and length of the knife, particularly that "combat knife". Example. If you have concluded that you MUST do a behind the back horizontal carry, you are going to have a problem if you selected a knife with 6, 7, 8 or 9 inch combat blade.
    3. Research. If you limit yourself to a google search of the best "combat knives" or youtube reviews, you are going end up with the same selection of knifes. Some of those are acceptable IF you have the skills. However, if you looked at the combat knives within my reach at the computer, you would find 2 discontinued US made combat blades a Scandinavian blade, a couple of Russian made blades.
    4. Modifications and maintenance. You have to acknowledge your limitations. A mentor was a paratrooper. He has even designed a survival knife. Because he doesn't have the skills or the equipment, he had his Glocks, carry knives and his self designed survival knife dealt with by expert craftsmen. A trench knife, a dagger, a bayonet, a WW2 Ka-bar are all "combat knives", but designed for different combat applications. You will want to study knife modifications and sheath modifications so that your "combat knife" is suitable for the application.

    Awesome video. I especially appreciate the tip test at the 10:05 - 10 part of the clip. Great to see such a good heat treat from the TOPS 440c...I owned one 440c knife(Boker Plus M2)and the tip broke just from falling off of my kitchen counter (Boker didn't warranty the breakage). This knife seems fantastic and am about to order one from Knifeworks in the AM.,,,a BIG THANK YOU for such detailed vids.

    Interesting. It reminds me of an original EK Bowie I had when I was active duty back in the 80's working in survival. The blade was also 440C and pretty much an exact clone. The handle was squared black micarta with large brass screw lugs. The sheath although thick nylon webbing was also ambidextrous like this one. The pommel looks like a skull crusher just like on the EK. The cross guard was large like this one, but in brass. It looks like someone from Tops took the old ques from the old EK Bowie.

  • @Sblaze813
    @Sblaze813 8 лет назад +4

    Now that's a nice blade. I like the 440C. Less upkeep and I don't have to worry as much about rust. Carbon steel in a survival situation seems like a liability to me.

    • @Wildwestwrangler
      @Wildwestwrangler 5 лет назад +1

      If you really think that then you haven't been there. People who are afraid of rust don't know what they are doing. If you have a fire then rust is easy to control.

    With the heavy cross guard and the blade profile it screams Randall. One of my complaints about some of the Randall designs has been the deep finger groves which makes is very comfortable to use in the normal edge down orientation but terrible in any other orientation.
    Looks like a winner for Tops.

    Very nice. Personally, I would prefer an extra 1/4" of blade and a 1/4" of handle than a finger choil on my knives. I usually just pinch the blade for fine tasks. I do like 440c, I find it's a good, underrated steel. Thanks for showing us this knife.

    • @Wildwestwrangler

      @@Wildwestwrangler I agree! To forge an air hardening steel is pure madness, but thats what it took to bring its performance to knives back in the day and forge it they did. Super that we can get actual chemistry 440C in flat stock for stock removal knifemaking today

    ill probably shave the guard down a bit as ill not be using it as a fighting knife.

  • @qzetu
    @qzetu 8 лет назад

    That is definitely a good looking knife. Great quality too. I can't believe how easily it was going through that rope. There really is no ergonomics going on in the handle. I 'd say the handle is quite standard. I like the hand guard look but I've always had an issue with choking up on them for too long. The finger indent is nice but that guard would still be an issue for me. It definitely has all the necessary qualifications of a survival knife. A proper survival knife should handle the batoning you demonstrated with ease. And, while I am on that subject, that is standard batoning for any knife. People who say use an axe have absolutely no idea how important batoning is or how fundamental it's uses are. In survival especially, when you are limited you will find that making a great deal of things will require some batoning. Especially making primitive traps. Anyway, this knife will certainly be a good tool for the average outdoors man. And I have to say, the price point is a lot better than some of the other knives you have covered. Thank you for the review.

    1) do u know any fixed blades similar to this Tops Desert Nomad design with a hand guard made of steel not aluminum, with quality carbon or tool steel true full tang blade 1095, O1, A2, H1, CPM 3V, or even S30/35V or CPM154?
    2) do u know why its so hard to find a good bushcraft or survival knife with a handguard? is it because it gets in the way for batoning n control for carving?
    3) do u have any links of sites or vids which show a variety of popular survival or bushcraft fixed blades and show pics or vids of the blade blanks (without handle attached) to see if it is true full tang, partial, rat tail, or skeletonized tang?

    Hi thanks for your entailed video! I just ordered this from Amazon, but just saw a negative comment regarding this knife that the Aluminum hand guard in contact with the steel is prone to inducing galvanic corrosion process, which
    made the stainless meaningless. Would you clarify this issue, because I am a heavy hand sweating person and anti-rust is the major concern of me. Thanks!

    Say Heah Aaron, I stayed a little extra on our weekend trip, Yeah, The Combo I used was my B H modified Attitude and matching modified Mad Hatter Machete which I had a Scandi Grind put on it like Colhane does on his machetes. My point is my Modified Attitude is also .20" thick making it a beefy robust type of knife. But the fact is I put White G-10 Handles on it with Blue Liners making it L@@K People Friendly. But there's no question in my mind my knife would hold its own if called for duty. Yeah, for a 5 1/4"+ blade, I can even lite chop with it, but I have no fear baton chopping with it. Plus it's a great L@@Ker, and it matches great with my Modified Mad Hatter Machete, Yeah same type of matching handles plus a Scandi Grind area for carving if I wish or forming wood like making a log have a flat side to work on. Yeah, I tested it but good over this weekend and it performed great, beautifully. Infact both did. But anyhow, I am getting this Desert Nomad, Again, Thanx for sharing it.,,.p

      Both are good and more affordable steels than S35VN when buying knives made from these listed steel alloys. In their prime 440C and 154 cm were top tier!!! Im interested in a meld of these alloys: S60V. Double the carbon of 440C, way more Molybdenum and assload of Vanadium. Good chemistry from both alloys, but powder metallurgy. Strictly speaking may not be as tough as either, but should perform in ability to hold the edge at a sluceyier angle and still not be fragile

      Faster and ease on an off instead of having to loosen your belt to attach or remove it. Do you prefer this knife over the Steel Will Dark Angel that you reviewed a little while ago? I'm looking for a good tactical blade that could still be used as a survival knife if needed.

    Aluminum on steel is not a good combo.The aluminum will act as an anode to the steel cathode creating accelerated galvanic corrosion. It would be much better to have all steel.

    Would you consider this knife better than the Apache Falcon. I'm not sure which one to get.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 лет назад

      I have not tested the Apache falcon yet, the desert nomad is lighter weight and has a thicker stock, so I think for combat tasks it might be a little better.

    I have a question! If someone made a knife out of quality steel and made it one quarter to one half inch thick. Should that be a better quality knife that would last for ever???

    • @qzetu
      @qzetu 8 лет назад

      I believe there are knives out there that are 1\4 thick. Anything thicker than that is over doing it. A thicker knife is obviously going to last longer but there are 3 things to consider. (1) a standard tip strength depends a lot on quality rather than thickness. (2) the thicker the knife the heavier it is (3) a thicker the blade the less slicing capabilities you get.

    • @sonfoku73
      @sonfoku73 8 лет назад

      this question makes no sense its way too open. u have to think about grinds, geometry, steel, etc. what was the point of this question?

    • @qzetu
      @qzetu 8 лет назад

      +Keep Out It certainly is an "open" question and that is actually a good thing because you can express yourself the way you want. However, if you want to narrow it down, I think the person simply wants to know if a thicker knife is better.

      That's what me said...oriented to survival TASKS with combat capability. Good combo for soldiers. Not a dedicated survival knife, but this versus rabid dog or coyote is of benefit if your pistol misfires

    I have never once even considered buying a tops knife, especially in 440c, i don't think i have ever seen anything under 100$ except for neck knives and even those are way too much. Especially considering other knife makers make excellent carbon steel knives that are up to twice the size or quality for less than half the price of this one.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 лет назад +2

      Would love to know who those knife makers are, because I am not aware of them

    • @ArcticGator
      @ArcticGator 8 лет назад

      Most of the Ontario spec plus 1st gen line up, a marine raider or sp6 with 1085 steel is going for 55-60 dollars, even Ontario's 2nd gen line up has better steel at around half the price, very few of them even break a hundred, and those are the largest of them with 10-11" blades of 5160, most of their blades that are comparable in size and function to these are around the 55-80 dollar range.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  8 лет назад +3

      +Arctic Gator so a few OKC blades, I have reviewed many and the quality and fit and finish are miles apart. The sheaths on the spec plus line are made in China and fall apart quickly, the rubber handles are much easier to product and cheaper then the g10 and exposed tang of the Desert Nomad. The 440C is will hold an edge longer and is more rust resident then the 1095. They are apples and oranges, Kia and Lexus, .22cal and .45acp....they both have there place, and if you are hard up for cash the ones you listed will work well, but not in the same ball park when we to materials and quality and therefore price.

    • @ArcticGator
      @ArcticGator 8 лет назад +1

      The sheath on mine is the older leather/cordura nylon combo (sp5 survival bowie) and and is holding up after years of use, i have no experience with the new run of sheaths, but Ka-bar's bk line of knives is comparable as well and is still less than this knife and they have the hard plastic and nylon sheaths, and if you are into leather sheaths, then just look at most of condor's line up, still better steel at less price and their leather sheaths are some of the best in the business, sure, 440c is rust resistant, but it also tends to be more difficult to sharpen and also tends to chip more as a result of it's hardness, at least in my experience with it on pocket knives. Unless you are diving i don't think you need to worry very much about high carbon knives, especially with the coatings that the modern knives have on blades, as long as you wipe them after they get wet and put them in the sheaths wet or gunked up with blood or food rust shouldn't be an issue.
