    Terrific discussion. I have the ultimate respect for those that put on a tool belt and can actually do what they discuss. I have been a woodworker, furniture maker and DIY trim carpenter for 50 years. I am currently helping my son remodel his 100-year old historic home. I’ve learned so much from Brent to add to my skill set in this remodel. Can’t thank him enough. There is nothing like putting on a tool belt and testing your knowledge and skills.

      Good luck to you and your son 🍻 I believe that's the hardest part - putting that knowledge to use with the tool belt on. His Wednesday videos he shows how to apply classical design elements to modern homes- if you haven't checked them out, it's definitely worth the time!

      I hope so, too. His patreon is costly, and I'm not keen to give Patreon any money anyway given their anti-science/anti-free speech/anti-women and pro-trans cult stance on things. Too bad because I've been asking to see more of his library for a few years and now it looks like it'll be pay to play, but some of the money goes to a woke company.

      Amen to that! Every time, as an American, when visiting London and Greenwich, I really love to spend time in the parts of London which were rebuilt after the Great Fire (1666). I get goosebumps visiting the old buildings and churches. Wren, of course, is my favorite, and as his epitaph in St Paul's says, "Si monumentum requiris circumspice" [If you seek his monument, look around].

    This topic reminds me of some reading in my misspent youth. Aristotle said " For the experienced know the fact, but not the wherefore; but the artists know the wherefore and the cause. For the same reason we consider that the master craftsmen in every profession are more estimable and know more and are wiser than the artisans."
    This helps explains why there is so much shoddy construction around. And why attempts at copying a style often fall short.. We need to understand what makes buildings sturdy, useful and beautiful to be worthy of the title: master builder.

    Awesome video, thanks for sharing your journey. Your comment, "building houses for 30 years doesn't make you a master builder" reminds me of something I heard a while back, about the *quality* of experience: "some people have 20 years' experience and some have 1 year of experience 20 times"

    This video was so encouraging to me. I agree with and can identify with so much of what you said. Like putting the craft before business. There's many jobs I end up not making as much simply because I wanted it done right. I've been doing this for 35 years and though I know I have learned a lot and developed skills that some don't have, I still have difficulty seeing myself as a master builder, MAYBE a master finish carpenter but that's it. There just is so much I don't know and would love to learn. Thank you!

    Hey Brent. Question??
    Regarding many of the historical books you have. Since they have been out of print for many years, can you republish them??
    I think craftsmen being able to get a hold of the size easy to carry around to job sites could be very beneficial.
    I know you are including quite a bit in your book. But just seems like reprinting certain ones would be helpful to others as well.

    I think that a master in crafts has also have a philosophy or a certain work ethic that he follows. and that every master has started small to learn and learned from his mistakes in his craft.

    "Am I really a master? Uh, I don't think so..." This is a statement indicative of a master. If you don't know an answer to something I'm sure you know where to look to find it, and more importantly, you know the edge of your own knowledge which is something non-masters usually don't know.

    3:39 I wanna challenge that. They were great decisions for business, they weren't great decisions for short-term profit. In the end, those decisions paid dividends for you business. Cutting corners to save a buck doesn't. Eventually, those people go out of business. And lose their scruples too.

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  4 месяца назад +1
