I have that SmallRig VCT setup. I know it has the vertical adjustment piece for the front 15mm rail receivers. Would it make sense to take out just the rail part and bolt it on the RushDesign VCT, or would that give you too much stack height?

Did you try the Zacuto VCT Pro? That one you showed looks like the VCT Jr., which doesn't connect at the back and the baseplate is arca swiss (not sure if it's ideal for heavier cameras vs the pro plate which is proprietary). It's heavier than the rushman for sure, at 2.1 lbs, but a lot of the weight is because the padding is heavy, but feels amazing. And because it attaches at the rear, it's a rock solid connection to the vct plate. It's a much better connection than the arca swiss jr. model.
Also, since I'm on the Zacuto fan wagon at the moment, one thing I love about the classic z-finder is the optics. Because of the optics they put in the loupe, the finder can be a lot shorter than most other bolt on evf loupes. It's not massive, but that extra 1-0.5" gained with the shorter louper is nice, plus the antifog layer in the zacuto loupe is my favourite.
I would also take another look at the mounting point for the monitor. When the loupe extensions, the dynamic tension Sony has on their mount is only really designed for their loupe, so when you attach one that is slightly heavier it may not balance right and just slowly dip overtime. Bright tangerine and zacuto make their own evf mounts with dynamic adjustments that allow for on the fly adjustments and tension adjustment, while staying unlocked so you can adjust throughout the day on the fly. Bright tangerine has their Axl monitor holder, and Zacuto has their Axis mount. Zacuto does show it working well with Sony's mount, so maybe the Zacuto one is light enough. Eitherway, there might be a better mount option like bright tangerine's to hold the monitor better than Sony's and give you that additional snugness you are after. I also like zacuto's top plate because it also has a middle nato rail that can make the top handle slide front to back. It's so helpful, in my experience, when doing midday lens changes and you can move the handle for balance first before moving the evf placement.
All that being said, if I had to choose for me, I actually really value the ability to flatten the monitor to the side of the body so much, that I love doing a hybrid build. First I do a Zacuto Z-Finder mount and it's handle and cage, with Zacuto's vct shoulder pad. Then I add in the Shape Burano Monitor mount www.shapewlb.com/products/shape-push-button-view-finder-mount-sony-burano it bolts directly to the Burano monitor and attaches the Shape patented push button rosette rotator. This way I can extend and rotate for comfort and other angles, but when I'm done adjusting it's locked in tight and can't sag or be bumped off. Especially when I flip up the zacuto evf I can touch the screen without any wobble for auto focus stuff. And for packing I can pop off the evf and flatten the lcd to the body.

The Burano sounds like owning a Jeep Wrangler with never-ending accessory purchases.

Wow that is such a lightweight vct design. ‘DP of Anthony Bourdain’ perked my ears up. How is the comfort of the pad?

Pad is pretty basic, about the same as the movcam. I have a super soft leather pad I'll try out next, need to find it. It's a super nice design I wish the LWS rods lined up proper on the Burano (85mm to optical center).

I dont know everything and I know you have your uses cases but from my perspective watching your videos and what I remember so far is that youve spent so much time and money and fus going about this burano. your fx9 still feels like it would be a better fit for you outside of the 8k deliverable asks. Burano seems like a sony cash grab for a market that the fx9 already serves and serves well from your experience and that you already have a fantastic workflow for.

There is a blind spot in this vlog, there is higher level work I can not showcase. I needed a camera to replace the Amira for a few specific clients. I paid $60,000 in 2014 for my first Amira, the Burano is less than half the cost. The few specific clients that demand that level will cover the purchase cost in about 1 year. And I get to use a better camera on other projects, the benefits of IBIS + Vari ND, clear image zoom, AF in S&Q, LUT outputs in all record resolutions make it a valuable camera on some FX9 level projects.

Do you think the Burano is badly designed? Seeing you struggle with all these different third party accessories just to get the camera to work on your shoulder.

Is the nature of the cube camera format. Been through this same process with the C300, multiple Reds, Mini. The ENG camera is still the ideal general purpose design.

I’m hopeful for a 2.0 made with lighter components like the CF panels on the Mini and a S35 UHD or higher sensor. Although my clients are near all Sony ecosystem.

Rush Design VCT plate for the win! Eventually everyone comes around to its light weight and no frills design.... ;)
In seriousness though, hope it works better than the other things you've tried. It's always frustrating trying to get the rig dialed in comfortably.

By far the lightest weight and nice solid chatter free connection to the VCT plate. I wish the rods were at the proper height for the Burano. However it's rare now to run accessories on LWS. So good purchase and made in my home state of Maine!

@@CrankyCameraman I know Im sounding like a cracked record , but have you tried the Chrosziel . I went through the same thing with my fx9 , Vocas / Zacuto / etc and the Chrosziel is by far the best IMHO , for a low profile " no frills" shoulder rig VCT rig. their VCT plate also is very good.

@@CrankyCameraman I do wonder if the Rush Design plate is the proper LWS height for a Sony F5? I believe those were the cameras that the No Reservations team were shooting on at the time the plate was produced. But I'm sure if Rush Design started adding the complexity of adjustable rod height, etc. then the plate would get larger and heavier. I tend to run a clamp-on matte box with my camera setups anyway, so I don't worry about the LWS height.
