    My wife also hated Barbie. My mother in law thought it was one of the worst movies that she’s ever seen. She kept looking around at the others in the audience wondering why anyone was laughing. I also hear the part that takes place in the “real world” was weak from a lot of different people. It’s safe to say you’re not alone.

    This was my deception of the year. I was so hyped for the movie, I was eating up every trailers and teasers. I felt like I fell in a trap once in the theater. This wasn't at all the fun and feel good movie I was expecting to see. I really wanted to like this movie, I came with the best intentions forcing myself to try having fun but, it wasn't working for me. I don't know if it is a cultural reason, or if my brain works differently, I cannot understand the entertainment value of this movie. I thought... maybe the movie is too political for me, But I love "Legally Blonde", "Desperate Housewives" and even "Bombshell". I did have some issues with the messages of the movie (I am really 50/50 about it) but it usually don't stop me from enjoying a movie. I would still rate this movie 5/10 because the set pieces, acting and music was fantastic. The only time I did genuinely laughed was when weird Barbie was on screen.

    As for this movie I still want to see it. Sue I agree with you wholeheartedly about the 2019 version of "Little Women." Despite the good cast and acting there was something missing throughout the entire film. It seemed boring and lifeless.

    • @Attmay
      @Attmay 2 месяца назад

      Ratboy is why I won't see that version of *Little Women* ever, and now the director of the film is on my permanent ban list. Timmeh can't act and Gerwig is a hack. *2001: A Space Odyssey* parodies are tired. "Also Sprach Zarathustra" is much ado about nothing without the imagery Stanley Kubrick added to it. Even *Monty Python's Flying Circus* and *Punku Brewster* were more effective in their homages. At least Kubrick doesn't have to suffer through this vileness like we do.

    Thanks for this. I can't think of any other film I've seen in years as ridiculously hyped as "Barbie" and that so much of middle America has tried to embarrassingly portray as being some sort of politically profound classic. Parts of the plot made no sense at all. Greta Gerwig is actually being promoted as some sort of female Stanley Kubrick, lol!!

    I agree with you. I hated this movie. I love empowering women…. or rather, I love empowering humans of all genders and race. And so when “empowering women” comes at a cost of disempowering anyone else, it’s a hard no for me. That’s not healthy and not what any of our hearts truly want. I loved Barbie growing up and so I appreciated the nostalgia of some of that in this movie. I also loved America Ferrara’s monologue and weird Barbie but everything else was way too neurotic and chaotic and didn’t come together well at all. I totally agree that the heavy handed women empowerment message style of this director is all wrong for me. It’s awful and I hate it. That’s what my gut said when I watched the trailer for the first time but then after hearing some rave reviews I decided to give it a chance. I wish I’d listened to my gut. As usual she knows me best.

    I had the unfortunate experience of going to the cinema to see Barbie this evening as my wife was keen to watch it. While I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, it was everything I feared and more. The comedy fell very flat for me and although female empowerment is something that should absolutely be promoted, when it’s hammered home in every scene it is frankly tiring.

    • @ratt57
      @ratt57 8 месяцев назад

      @@etsequentia6765 I still don't understand what it was trying to say. It starts with a matriarchy, then it becomes a patriarchy, and then it goes back to a matriarchy again. This was its message about equality among the sexes, lol?

    • @Attmay
      @Attmay 2 месяца назад

      It remains a straightriarchy through and that's why it is a bad movie. Was I the only gay man who hated Barbie as a child like all the tomboys I knew who preferred Ninja Turtles? I played with typical boy toys, considered blue my favorite color, had short hair, and actually liked wearing suits and ties to synagogue. If I were a girl, I would have been a total tomboy. Still turned out 100% gay. Gay men need to stop enabling this basic b----h stuff because it is toxic. It is toxic to the environment and it is toxic to women and to the gay men who are supposed to latch onto this shit somehow even though it is degrading, not empowering. I still remember how other girls bullied my sister for still playing with her Barbies after she reached double digit ages.
      There's already a good Barbie movie: *Toy Story 3.* Alternately, there's *Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story* if you can find a copy. This is outright hateful junk, and I'm embarrassed for anyone who cannot see why it is hateful junk. It's a toy commercial about a failed revolution that was justified by the oppression of men. Everybody involved with this movie should be imprisoned. Every copy should be destroyed. No freezepeach for misandry!

    I liked the trailer and was looking forward to it thinking that it was going to be all fun, dancing and light hearted. I was okay for the first 30 minutes but I think that as soon as Barbie entered the real world I felt everything started falling apart. I am fine if there is some female empowerment message in there but as you said - the story was all over the place. Yes Will Ferrel was just annoying. yeah, it's show, not tell.. you only need one scene in a movie to preach the true message of the film, not the entire thing. it's like going on a date and the person immediately goes into their politics and talks at you instead of to you - they aren't looking at the camera but the dialogue is constantly breaking the fourth wall because it's aimed at the audience instead of being a natural part of the story.

      I thought the movie went a lot deeper than just a criticism of men. It was about being the best you can in a messy world, no matter who you are. And it was about how in reality, nothing is perfect, but we take life the way it is with its challenges and surprises.

    I'm sure this film will be enjoyable but never was a fan of the whole matriarchy or patriarchy concept Greta brought up, I understand Barbieland is a feminized world but doesn't entirely mean it's "matriarchy" cause if you look at the actual doll Ken's were not just used as "accessory" how people claim to be, I remember Ken having occupations however Barbie does come to have thousands of jobs more than Ken because again she's always going to be at the for-front, then there patriarchy in the real world (California) which doesn't make sense since Barbie went to the real world in modern generation where women have a lot of options/choices (there also a scene of Ken with a female doctor which it kinda destroys the narrative this movie is trying to push), if this movie was set in 1950s or 60's, it would've made sense since gender roles were normalised but again the flawed messaging in this film did put a lot of influence with there audience which is pretty shocking to me😅

    Someone may have already commented that Skipper is there but it's an tiny role and she doesn't say anything. And she's mentioned by Will Ferrell character that she tried to escape Barbie Land 10 years prior. But no explaining why.
    I absolutely agree with you about this movie. I did not enjoy it at all, sadly. I really wanted to, but it just felt flat to me and not at all funny. I didn't laugh once. That said, Margot is perfect as Barbie. The setting and the way it is shot is beautiful. I just have a feeling that most of the money is going to marketing and Margot's PR tour.

    I hated this movie. And I've always hated Barbie in general. Ever since I was a little kid. The only reason it's popular is because it's Barbie, and Mattel gave it the biggest marketing campaign in history. If this movie wasn't Barbie, and it was called Jessica, or Rebecca, or some other generic white female name, nobody would've watched this.

  • @LellaShaffner
    @LellaShaffner 9 месяцев назад

    You did indeed check out of the movie after the monologue because later Ferrara says, "Okay, what about Ordinary Barbie? She’s not extraordinary. She’s not president of anything, or maybe she is. Maybe she’s a mom. Maybe she’s not. Because it’s okay to just want to be a mom, or to wanna be president or a mom who is president. Or not a mom who’s also not president." In other words, no one should have to feel like they need to be empowered in any way. As the ending dialogue goes: "'Do you give me permission to become human?' 'You don’t need my permission.'"

      Sorry for any lack of clarity. The ultimate message seems not to be female empowerment. It is to stop pressuring one another over trivial matters and to be content being the best version of ourselves. Not matriarchy or patriarchy. Just humanity. That's my modest advocation for it at least.

    Aw sorry this one didn’t click with you, Sue. You had some good pros and cons. So true though. We all see film differently and I don’t know what it was, but our audience was super responsive cheering at least three times in the movie and it just made me laugh…a lot. I didn’t see Little Women so this is my first female empowerment movie I saw of Greta’s and even though it makes men look dumb, I felt it was so over the top that it didn’t bother me. Also having less history about all the Barbies probably helped. On the bright side, I guess it’s one less steelbook for you to worry about 😉

When you have a film like this, you're going to have people who will love it or they'll hate it. I don't like films where the filmmakers tried to 'brown-beat' their message into the film. I really liked the last part when Barbie was going to become human and we are shown parts of a human life…and then all ruined with the last bad joke 🤦🏻‍♀️! Ketchup over caviar!

  • @lllSASlll
    @lllSASlll Год назад +2

    I respect you opinions but I think if you come out of the movie thinking it hates men and that that's part of the message...it definitely isn't. I really respected how they showed the effects on how the changes in their social structure caused in-fighting in the Kens. It depicted them as capable but pushed to the side and living dependent on the Barbies, it's a cautionary message of what it looks like, regardless of if youre a Barbies or a Kens...when your entire social group is reduced to being disenfranchised or just used as an accessory to others. This movie doesn't hate kens, it doesn't hate men, it sympathizes with whoever is in that position of a power imbalance.
    also Skipper was mentioned a few times.

    Despite flaws such as too many characters, on balance I find the film fun and enjoyable, particularly having gone into it without any personal history (ie. no Ken dolls in my childhood) - well, aside from that notorious song by Aqua!
