  • Taking a chance and exploring new backcountry trails can often times lead to most incredible experiences and this year during Easter Jeep Safari I’m taking that chance. This is my second day here in Moab and while generally I stay close to town and hit the popular trails, I usually try to explore at least one place in the region I haven’t done in the past and today I’m doing something very different. I’m meeting up with some great guys and heading 80 plus miles out of town for the day for an adventure in the San Rafael Swell, a day I don’t think any of us will forget soon.

The San Rafael swell area has been under attack in a land battle for closures. It will have large areas closed down just like areas around moab. We need more people to push back. We are losing so much public land in Utah to wilderness areas and then it will only be accessible by hiking and permits. There is soooo much history in the Swell.

    • @richard-witty
      @richard-witty 5 месяцев назад

Yeah it’s a tough battle. Thankful Blue Ribbon and Utah Public alliance are fighting for us. I have mixed feelings about RUclips and social media, it’s great for making people aware of beautiful places but unfortunately the number of people visiting these places has increased greatly. The San Rafael Swell area has become so busy, not sure if that’s good or bad.

I posted earlier; this from a history book. Vernon PIck, electrician from Minn. discovered the Delta Mine (Hidden Splendor Mine) NW of Hanksville in 1952. He reaped a million from the mine before he sold it to Floyd Odlum's Atlas Corp. for $9M. It was renamed the Hidden Splendor & he estimated it would make him $22M. They extracted 90K ton, uranium ore, before abandoning it in 1957.
The old Hidden Splendor mine sits at the far W end of the Behind the Reef Road, & is adjacent to Muddy Creek, just as it comes out of the 'chute' (Muddy Creek Chute). There were a variety of other metals mined for in the region, but uranium was the most prominent & old 'remnants' (vehicles, equipment, shacks) exist in various portions of the full "swell' both N & S of I-70. On the N side of Temple Mountain (passed as one joins the BR road) are mining remnants and old equipment. (Thanks again for the sterling video)

I've always loved that area. The first time I remember going down the "Behind the Reef" trail was back in the late 60's, when my dad took me all over that area in a Volkswagen squareback of all things. It was amazing the areas you could get to in that little car, especially with the help of a little rock stacking and a high lift jack. Now I cheat and either use a 4wheel drive truck or my UTV. It was a really remote area back in the 60's, the highway which became I-70 was under construction, but no I-70 bridges yet. The mines had been closed for awhile, and the National Parks in that region didn't get many visitors. Such beautiful country, which I've enjoyed exploring off and on for decades.,

Those "slabs shooting out of the ground" .. Ya, those were amazing. That's what I was thinking in that footage. It does look really cool. Mother Nature does some beautiful sculptures.

Hey Master Chief! Love the video! Great content as always! I have a question for you. The camera mount that you have on the roll bar / speaker bar above your shoulder. Can you give me the Intel on that? Thanks and keep up the great work! Oh, Happy 131st Birthday Goat!!

The Swell, spans N & S of I-70, with much variety on both sides. This video (excellent) appears to be in the S quadrant
and within are numerous hiking, canyoneering & old mining claim spots. These areas are best approached in spring and fall, summer is too warm & winter (potentially) impassible. Nice having fellow RUclipsr's, & being able to visit new country that catches your eyes and mind. If one likes to hike, look up Goblin Valley, Little Wild Horse, Bells; & Ding & Dang Canyons. Brad, thanks for sharing; I'm glad you had a good & safe day.

    Hi Brad
Investiging into a jeep wrangler aswell think of the following mod's.
    1) we still have diesel 2.8, changing pump to mechanical and taking es off with turbo control from England.
    2) Standing correction and progresive coil shocks from Camil shocks
    3) Remain with 15"rims and 31 " all tenían tyres from Yokohama geolander.
    4) Flat fender plastic front rear not sure between bush wacker
    5) Stubby custom tubular front and rear bumper made from aluminum.
    6) upgraded driving lights LED and wiper blade with washing nozzles.
Is there something I'm missing for now, our offroad condition very similar to baja

I would have to agree ... Jeeps constant failure to address just basic shortcomings (temperamental AUX battery and Cam lifter issues) IMO will have perspective buyers shy away even if they push down the EV path. Look at how the current platform looses its mind with simple voltage fluxuations ... and they expect us to embrace a full electric platform? These are the tough questions that need to be presented at the round tables .... consumers need to be able to trust the brand.

How is “Prickly Pear”? Also, I spent every summer as a child / teenage in the Price, Castle Dale, Ferron Utah area. I don’t live there now, but I consider it my “home”. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Where was the entrance of this trail at? I am scoping OnX and curious on where to enter this trail.

Hi Brad, thank you for showing these places. Your video shots really showcase the trail and it’s nice that the trail looks almost untouched. It keeps the authentic beauty of the land.
Question: can you discuss the performance of DOC since all the upgrades? You’ve changed tires, axles, suspension. Just wondering how the mileage is doing. Thanks

We spent a few days in San Rafael last year during Easter Jeep. It was beautiful! Moab is awesome but that area is our favorite area to wheel. Check out some of the offroad areas around Capitol Reef National Park if you get the chance. There is so much beauty in southern Utah! Thank you for sharing your adventures!

We’ve replaced 3 Hurricanes in the Wagoners already at my dealership. That’s in 18 months or so of availability. I really hope it’s not a trend. I’m already against turbos on gas engines for daily vehicles. History isn’t kind.

When I returned home I did some research. Not sure I would camp in the Swale without a geiger counter. Yikes!!! Some of this area is HOT!!! Wish I would have read the trail signage and information centers. @radioactivedrew has some great content about the Swale.

I’ve drove the Temple Mountain trail from my home in Price all the way to Goblin Valley in a stock Wj without any problems. The Swell is very accessible and I hope more people can enjoy it for years to come.
