thank you so much! through all these years that has passed, i never believe in myself. so, i started to get things seriously because this year i'll be in grade 10 and yet i don't even know how to add this way.
Question : if you want to calculate let's say 114 + 8, how do you proceed in your head ? a) 114 + 6 = 120 , 120 + 2 = 122 b) 114 + 10 = 124, 124 - 2 = 122 c) another way ?
What I've found best for myself is to learn the single digit sums like 7+3=10 ; 6+9=15 ; 9+9=18 and so on. so what i'd do is 8+4=12 so last digit is 2 and carry over 1 gets added to middle 1 in 114. so i get 122
it's not that i can't add them quickly, it's just that in tests my hands get nervous and sweaty because I feel like i'd be a disgrace. -and also because there are timers-
The trick is to have different ways of doing the same sum so you can check your answer. Then even if you make a mistake you will know it and be able to correct it. The important thing is not to worry about speed but to concentrate on getting the right answer. If you do the sum one way then reverse the sequence to check your result. Very often you will discover that these 'other' ways are actually faster & easier to do. But they are not generally taught in schools. You find them in Speed/Mental Maths books.
A way I like to do it is by basic math. 56 + 18 = ? If you know that 8+6 = 14, then you know the sum has to end in a 4. Then, from there you can add the 1 (from the 14) to the 5 and the 1, thus totaling 74.
For a 2-2 digit numbers, I would do something like this: 89 + 76 > 80+70 = 150; 6+9=15; 150+15=165; for subtraction, e.g. 56 - 27, add 3 to 27, so you have 30, keep in mind your three, now 56-30 = 26, add your three here, 26+3 = 29
As you say, it doesn't matter whether you go right to left or left to right, but do you think it's a good idea to switch back and forth? Doing it the same way every time eliminates a decision from the process and making your technique more automatic and reliable. Just my opinion. Your videos are excellent.

Omg thank you! I'm a cashier and I know I should be better at adding and subtracting things mentally in my head, but it's always been such a struggle for me. This helped me so much!
I'm here because I have aphantasia, which has always prevented me from being able to see/imagine numbers in my head in order to add and subtract. I've always had to count on my fingers or write things down and do it long handed. Sadly once I started using a calculator all of my math skills I managed to learn went out the window and now I struggle with even simple addition/subtraction...so here I am! I hope this helps.
For (37 + 68) I round up to (40 + 70) which equals 110 and then subtract the the difference from the rounded up numbers to the original set. So, 110-5 = 105
Yup, the way they teach us in school, to add from right to left, while perhaps more basic, straightforward, and technically correct from the standpoint of teaching how to do the problem, it could be considered backward, it's generally easier to add from left to right starting with bigger numbers. I mean, just trying to teach my nephew extremely simple adding problems using flashcards, I realized it's much easier to add a small number to a big number rather than a big number to a small number, in fact, it's actually what he did. For example,17 + 5 is much easier than 5 + 17, it's just the way our mind works, at least for most people. When I asked my nephew what is 5 + 17, he would always do 17 + 5. With 37 + 68, I would say 30 and 60 is 90, and 7 and 8 is 15, then 90 + 15 + 105, easy. It's much easier than doing 8 + 7 is 15, so write 5 and carry one, then 3 + 6 equals 9, then add the one we carried over and get 10, and 5, which makes 105.
This is the way I do it. I thought I was strange. I find the long method very difficult and conveluted, when I just want to juggle numbers in my head. I don't know why I have such a negative reaction to it, but I'm teaching my daughter now and nothing has changed since I learnt 30 years ago.
The first math 43+17 / 43+5 doesn't equal 50 so I quickly got confused there. But overall I get it.... thanks for this kind of content please keep it up.
If to do it 'in the head' it's much easier to deal with 'rounded' numbers than to keep in mind each result for units and decimals and then adding both results together. The 'tricks' from this video suites more for counting with a pen and paper. Better trick is to start imagining numbers in a bit differet way like: 55-39 => (55+1) - 40 43 + 17 => 40 + 20 37 + 68 => 40 + (68-3) or (37-2) + 70
his method is a little backwards. it's better to work with tens when adding the one's column, the carried number is always gonna be one. I would not recommend this method. nice voice though
I'm a grade 10 student next month, but I'm still not good at subtraction and addition when it comes to mental math, I feel like I'm stupid, when I once rode a tricycle The driver told me that I was stupid because he was asking me to get the change instead of him, I don't know if I will take it because he said that it was embarrassing for my friend that happened twice I don't know if it's okay with me that people look down on me, so I hope I learn something this vacation, I'll really study so that people around me don't make me look stupid
U can also do that for eg 72-24= 1. How many times four is away from 10 i.e 6 2. Add 2( from 72) i.e 6+2=8 3.subtract 7-3 (2+1) always add 1 i.e equal to 4 4. U got ur answer 48
You can do 4-2=2 and then 10-2=8 is as well, I work left to right because I check the column to the right of the one I am working on to see if it is too heavy or not.
I came here because I played darts with a group of guys the other day and could not do the math in my head. The math muscle is weak! Thank you for this channel!
for subtraction i do the units first so for his example its 82-14 I do 2-4 which is -2 (or do 4-2 =2 then add a '-' in front of the 2) then I save the -2 for later, then work out 8-1 which is 7 and then just do 80-2 to get the last digit so the answer is 78

I'm 23 and still don't know how to add mentally 😅
Me to bro
Good little trick... I did it another way but yours is faster so i'm doing it your way from now on. Thanks
for 43 + 17
i did 7 + 3 = 10 and then 4 + 1 = 5.
510 minus the 1 (Because it makes logical sense that it wouldn't be that big) in the 10 = 50.
Thank you kind sir. You just improved my 501 Dart game.
Awesome videos! Thanks for making these - they are helping a lot of people! = )
I got an A in school for these tricks. Thank you so much!!
Thank you :( I’m good with Math but whenever I feel pressured working as a cashier I calculate wrong.
This is the way I do it. I thought I was strange. I find the long method very difficult and conveluted, when I just want to juggle numbers in my head. I don't know why I have such a negative reaction to it, but I'm teaching my daughter now and nothing has changed since I learnt 30 years ago.
Hey, this is a great tutorial. I just want to ask... what drawing application are you using? It seems to be quite efficient.
The first math 43+17 / 43+5 doesn't equal 50 so I quickly got confused there. But overall I get it.... thanks for this kind of content please keep it up.
43+5=50??? omg
That's what I was thinking. Lol
+Durgesh Thakur hahahaha
just use your common sense
43+5=50 WOT
Pretty impressive to get the answer right even if he's using the wrong numbers
If to do it 'in the head' it's much easier to deal with 'rounded' numbers than to keep in mind each result for units and decimals and then adding both results together.
The 'tricks' from this video suites more for counting with a pen and paper.
Better trick is to start imagining numbers in a bit differet way like:
55-39 => (55+1) - 40
43 + 17 => 40 + 20
37 + 68 => 40 + (68-3) or (37-2) + 70
1:20 7 or 5 lol its ight I do that sometimes
Little tricks matter. Thank you for this video!
How is nobody talking about the 43+5=50…
😂
So helpful and so easy to understand THANK YOU
I add 7+3 to get rid of any pesky extras to get it all to round 10s; then add 50+10
It isn't about the age. It isn't about how smart you are. It is about how much you pay attention and actually comprehend the concept.
his method is a little backwards.
it's better to work with tens when adding the one's column,
the carried number is always gonna be one.
Me: hold my beer then I will show you my skills
Also me: 2+2 is 4-1 is 3 quick maths
when i order something i take time to do the sum thanks!
wow 43 +5 =50. great maths.
43+7***
Lmao
Better teacher than most of mine combined
says I would do 43+7 and writes 43+5 this is way I have trust issues
Did anyone else subtract the 3 from 43? That leaves you with 40, add three to 17 which gives us 20 now you do 40+20=60 :)
You said, "43 + 7 = 50". But wrote "43 + 5 = 50." Good one.
You made mental addition and subtraction so easy now
anyone realized in all of his videos he stars with saying "Good eye"?
Anthony Zenteno Thanks for the comment! The start is G'day (short for good day). Just the way Australians say hello.
ow cool but i still love your vids they help a lot :)
Anthony Zenteno it's not good eye it's good day
Anthony Zenteno it's not good eye it's good day
+tecmath hey 43 + 5 is not equal to 50 lol
U can also do that for eg 72-24=
1. How many times four is away from 10 i.e 6
2. Add 2( from 72) i.e 6+2=8
3.subtract 7-3 (2+1) always add 1 i.e equal to 4
4. U got ur answer 48
You can do 4-2=2 and then 10-2=8 is as well, I work left to right because I check the column to the right of the one I am working on to see if it is too heavy or not.
My mind be deceiving me 😭for the 105+77 for some reason I saw 77 as 75 so I was like oh that’s common sense it’s 180 😔i hate my self
Lol
I came here because I played darts with a group of guys the other day and could not do the math in my head. The math muscle is weak! Thank you for this channel!
you got 50 from adding 43+5 how??? lol
Camara Mackey exactly my thought
Camara Mackey typo
magic!
+MrBusta Not a typo because he's not typing, just a misteak
Camara Mackey it was magic bro
for subtraction i do the units first so for his example its 82-14
I do 2-4 which is -2 (or do 4-2 =2 then add a '-' in front of the 2)
then I save the -2 for later, then work out 8-1 which is 7 and then just do 80-2 to get the last digit so the answer is 78
43+5=what😂
Thank you for saying, "keep practicing it 👍🏻"
Bro says 7 & writes 5 LMAO.
I always confused between calculation.
but after watching this video I can easily do add or subtract..
thanku for this easy trick😊
my only problem is my memory. I did solved it but forgot the answers along the way
Practice is the key man
It's really good trick.
Thank you!
shouldnt 43+5 be 48?
Am I crazy or around 1:15 did you say "plus seven" but instead write "43+5=50" please help my brain nine years later.
im in 4th grade and very smart pass every single test A and B
Excellent me too I'm 10 but I'm in grade 6 lol
No one gives and correct your spelling "smart one"
+Krish Sharma Rude.
I'm in 10th And I pass my test with E and F u must be wondering how.
Well Money do it.
U must be smart but m rich.
Thanks so much my metal maths suck but knowing this makes life a lot easier
43+5=48?
No
50
1:37 You wrote 43 + 5 = 50 !!
I’m so confused , trying to figure out what the heck he is saying and writing cuz he says 43+7 so that’s 50 and then the left over 10 from the 17 lol
The one thing I won't miss about high school. SHOW ALL YOUR WORK.
9 + 10 = 21
+stillmatic TV stooped
This method alleviates the intimidation factor math used to pose. Great job!
