The Subaru WRX is a legend in the sports car and rally community. For the new 2022 Subaru WRX they decided to make some very strange choices in design, transmission , aesthetics, and much more. Today I break down the teaser for the new Subaru WRX and give my thoughts. This was an...interesting one.

      @marcusmcneal7453 2 года назад +27

Yup. The addition of the GT trim says it all. They’re trying to get people who would be buying sporty CUVs into the WRX. Everything about the design of this car appears to be done to appeal to them. All the more confusing there’s no hatchback to at least help this make more sense. This would maybe work for tweener hot hatch/CUV. But not for a damn base trim WRX sedan.

My 2012 WRX recently threw a rod while on the interstate @ 77k miles. After having the vehicle looked at by a Subaru technician, they confirmed that the vehicle needed a new short block due to piston ringland failure. I called Subaru of America to see if they could do anything for me given that I had a Certified Pre-Owned warranty from the dealer when I purchased it three years ago. I also did a little research and found that there were THREE separate lawsuits in the past seven years concerning the EJ engine that my WRX housed, all of which ended in a settlement without declaration of fault. When Subaru heard my dilemma they told me that unfortunately they couldn't do anything because the CPO timeframe ended nine months prior to the incident and the litigation warranty window ended at the same time. They then had the audacity to offer me $2,000 off the purchase of a new Subaru. Never again will I own another one of their cars. As much as they like to talk about how they have a loyal fanbase they certainly don't give a shit about them.

I'm always disappointed with Subaru's final product as far as looks go. I really enjoy driving my 2020 WRX, however its not exactly an artistic masterpiece.
Subaru needs to start making their production models look more like their concepts.
The last couple of times they've shown a concept, it looks amazing. Sadly by the time the production model comes out, we get something that looks more at home in any given airport rental lot.
How can they show a car as beautiful, as the Viziv, and then be proud to present and sell a car that looks like if a Honda Element, and a Civic had a baby? And then to have the "flag ship" model only come with a rubber band for a transmission?
Maybe they've got a surprise awaiting us when they reveal the STI...Fingers crossed.

@Roberto Vidal Garcia No. GDB era cars used less silicon. 9% in their cast hypoeutectic pistons as opposed to the later model cars which used a higher percentage of 12% , hypereutectic pistons that caused them to become more brittle. The main culprit was the usage of bad gas. Lower octane fuel that caused detonation. I mitigated this with COBB Accessport and a good etun. I also payed close attention to my EGTs and AFRs since I lived in Socal. The land of shitty gas. When my car pulled timing, I was ready with a bottle of Lucas octane booster for a immediate fix.

My first WRX is a 2017 and I call it my compromise car. It's a nice car overall. It's as fast as my 87 Supra was, which is nice for a daily driver, but has AWD so I can drive it in bad weather, I live in Mass so snow is a regular thing. Overall it handles pretty well, well enough to enjoy driving it. But there's not enough here for me to consider the 2022 WRX as a upgrade. The front isn't that different from the 2017 and I like it okay, but that ass is bad, I don't like it one bit. I'm excited for the new Z, I might get that and deal with the disadvantages of owning one, like snow and not being kid friendly lol.
As for the new 2.4 engine, I think I would like that, the 2.0 needs its turbo too much. If I've been sitting at a light too long and forget to spool the turbo the car has a hard time moving. The 2.4 might just be more engine and less turbo which I think would be a quality of driving improvement, but I don't know why they just didn't go with bigger motor and turbo and boost HP to over 300.

Ok, about the engine and power levels:
The reason Subaru have the 2.4L engine with about the same power levels as before is simple: drivability (wall of text below, but going into why they have less power for the amount of displacement)
The people buying these cars are not the same as the people that is going to buy them when they get a bit cheaper and start modifying them. Which make it important to have the power where it's most noticeable.
If we take a random 2L engine that makes 250PS peak and have 1 bar of boost, the boost start to come on at 2000 rpm and has 1 bar at 3000 rpm.
By having 2.5L instead, use the same turbo but lowering the boost down a bit, you will have the same amount of power, weight is still mostly the same since it's most lily going to be stroked up that amount.
you will end up with the same horse power, the turbo is will start to come online at 1800 rpm and 0.7bar of boost at 2600rpm. The boost hit is going to be less noticeable and the power before the turbo comes online is going to be better and the perceived as more responsive and easier to drive.
and because the turbo is compressing air by a lesser amount(that is if flow rate is good and not restricted) the lower pressure amount is going to keep the intake charge cooler if you have the same intercooler as with the hypothetical 2L engine. This makes it less prone to heat soak.
Or going down a bit in size and gain more response.
The people buying the car is going to perceive the 2.5L alternative as better since it has the same amount of power peak, but over the whole range it has more while still being more responsive.
But than again, there are people that can live the same amount of response as the 2L but having more power thanks to the extra displacement, but those people are not as likely to be the people that buys it from the dealer, which is why we have boring crossovers and SUVs.
Because that is what the market want unfortunately :/

Here's my take on the whole situation as someone that worked as a Subaru tech a few years back. The 6 speed in this (most likely) and the outgoing generation WRX is more or less the 5 speed glass box that's been in every WRX since the beginning with a larger extension housing on the back with an extra gear. Basically the transmissions are limiting the horsepower Subaru is willing to turn out of that 2.4 as neither the 6 speed or the cvt can handle much more hp or tq reliably enough for production. I'd be willing to bet money that when the sti is announced it's going to have the same 2.4L with a different turbo cranking out a decent amount more power as the sti 6 speed is a much stronger unit. It's also probably going to have different bumpers and those wheel arches will be color matched. It feels like this is all a ploy to upsell potential WRX "enthusiast" buyers into the more expensive sti, hence why the gt model is only offered as a cvt, if you want all the "race car" feeling things AND a manual you better fork over the extra cash.

    • @stevethomas760

@@cuddysendsit3043 and I made over 300 whp in my old bugeye without grenading the 5 speed but there's a difference between reliable in a tuning aspect and reliable as far as a manufacturer is concerned. They need a very large percentage of every WRX produced to make it well past the warranty period without any transmission issues. And with that much more hp in the hands of every idiot with a good credit score they can't guarantee that. The same way most vehicle lifts are underrated by about 50%, sure you can pick up a 15k lb truck on a 10k lb lift no problem. But will every single one produced do that with a near 100% reliability for years? Probably not.

It looks like they hired the guys who did the last generation of Pontiac and then also hired the guys that work at Dodge, and have them do a thumb-wrestling match to decide on which element of the car they get to design. Doesn't quite flow, as the elements aren't quite consistent with each other.
As for the engine, maybe they're not upping the power because they're trying to improve reliability? If you make the engine a bit beefier but not place increased demands on it, it tends to go longer with less servicing. Also what's going on with torque, anything there?
