Taking Off should sponsor her training and make a video series out of it! That would be fun to watch.

When I was a young lass, I wanted to be a pilot...but that dream was soon shattered because I learned that you cannot be a pilot if you're colour blind (which I am)....I was too young to realise that there are so many different types of pilots and just moved on, realising I would never be able to pursue it. I have, in the last few years realised that I could possibly get my private license and fly for fun...but, sadly...even if it was affordable for me, it's still not within reach because unfortunately...I am also blind in my left eye. However, for some reason, I am enjoying watching a lot of aviation content here on RUclips...I sort of feel like I am part of the aviation community even though I cannot fly. Oh well...I sure do enjoy listening to all you aviators talk about it because you are truly passionate and that makes me feel good and I love how encouraging and welcoming you are towards newcomers.

let me start by saying that i love the taking off podcasts! i listen to them on spotify when driving in my car and i love the topics you come up with and the discussions that araise from it. Also this one was very interesting to hear as i live (and fly) in Switzerland and would love to find the time to come to the us and add an FAA license to my EASA PPL one day to facilitate renting and flying an airplane during shorter visits in the us in the future... i disagree however on one thing you said: if you do your private pilot license as a hobby, you are not investing your money, you are simply spending it! Realizing that is actually a good thing, because if you can wrap your brain around the fact, that you are spending all this money just to have fun, you can stop worrying about how long the trainig is going to take and how much money you are going to spend until you are done or even what you are going to do with your license once you have it! Stef, the process of earning your private pilot license is extremely fun, that alone should be worth the spendings. it took me three years and about 90 hours to get my PPL because i was very busy with my job and my life in general, took a bit of a break even, but every single lession was worth the money it cost and i would not do it any different if i had to do it again. If there is one thing i regret about getting my PPL, it's that i waited so long, worrying about the cost to maitain this license and wether i needed it or not... i should have just gone for it and done it without overthinking it. What finally made me stop worrying about the cost of maintining and using my license was, that i got to know a guy who just purchased a mooney to get back into flying after he had stopped flying for 20 years. All it took was a couple of flight lessons with an instructor and a fresh exam, and he had his license back. He has in the meantime added an instrument rating to that and is again happily buzzing around europe. So even if you get your license now and then never use it again, or even if you don't finish the journey, you will always have the memory and the stories to tell and you can always pick it back up and continue your journey in aviation at any time in your life.. I hope you can get your discovery flight done soon and then take it from there... whish you all the best and a lot of joyful moments up in the sky, i love it there!

I'm British, resident alien in the US and, to keep my hand in (post 9/11) have taken a couple of 'trial' glider lessons (taking my BGA log book with me) and one Powered Discovery flight (Again taking my BGA log book along) in all three cases I flew most of the flight (except takeoff and working the engine/radio) including most of the air-tow with the gliders and the subject of nationality never came up. That part of this podcast was a little bit of an eye opener.

Interesting video. Im currently an ATP flight school student. I have dual citizenship and my plan is to fly for an airline in Mexico to build my 1500 hours and then come back to the US to fly for an airline here. Does this sound like a doable plan? Will there be any obstacles for a US airline to hire me?

      So you're a US citizen? I don't think you'll have obstacles.

I wouldn't think you'd have a problem in the states, if you have 1500 hours youre good, however, all the legacy and Low cost carriers are slowing down/stopping hiring in 2024. I would assume it will be a little tougher to get hired at the regional airlines, as there are fewer pilots leaving for the bigger airlines. Just my thoughts. Focus on finishing ATP school first, then worry about the other stuff.

I would be happy to have learned to fly, but I cannot get there because I cannot pass the medical requirement!! My wife could have passed the medical, no problem, but she passed away ten years ago from brain cancer!! I maintain that you would be safer with me piloting your aircraft with my A-Fib than you would have been with her piloting that same aircraft. I still follow aviation as an observer but that is as close to it as I am allowed to get!! Whomever said that life is fair was lying!!!
