Great tips but I’d maybe add an emergency Osculati type emergency ladder. It can trail over the stern or wherever is the smallest freeboard when you set sail. Getting back aboard wet and heavy will be much eased. Safe sailing.
All good advice,my additions are your welfare, clothing, food ,perhaps snacks, a flask.A Kit bag with dry clothes, extra layers to stay warm. Then your passage plan, the condition ,weather and level of experience, when to go,when, not to go and a secondary plan.
Nestor, Great video ! I sail and always thought I was being safe. Redundancy is key when solo and blue water sailing. Very nice of you to share this. You have probably saved a life! Best wishes, Rob
Wow! I know nothing about sailing and this video made absolutely perfect sense 👍. You’re an amazing sailor and now safety trainer! Well done👏🏼❤️👏🏼❤️👏🏼❤️
You really made ample safety considerations, i guess somehow driven by your experience on the Irish Sea ("lesson learned"?). I would go with you now even on the North Sea eyes blinded :) Very well done, kotk !!!
Hi, Nestor. Nice video and good tips even if you have crew. I have a presail checklist on my phone that we go through even before routine day sails. Wish I could find the funny but not so much vid I watched the other day of a solo bloke. First he almost falls ob with no tether but manages to monkey back aboard. Then he goes to the head for a piss and the door locks shut. He’s on autopilot and on a collision course with a tanker but manages to snag a line through the head hatch and to throw enough of it ob to foul the prop and stop the engine, but that damages the stuffing box so the boat begins sinking with him still trapped in the loo. Pretty funny vid but that and loneliness are the many reasons I’ve never favored solo sailing. The best solo sailor in recent history was the Frenchman, Bernard Moitissier. I forget the name of his book about his solo round the world race but it’s a good read. Goal is to relaunch Zanetia 6/1 and she’ll be in through October. Come meet her if your fantastic summer plans at all allow. Love all your new gear, although not so much your dark coloured foul weather jacket. They should;d always be red or yellow. There’s a reason the darkies are to be found on the sale rack…
Do you have AIS as that's another way to be tracked. Carry a knife with you too, in worst case scenario, you may need to cut your safety line if it is keel hauling you and there's no other options. Think this is a great safety video and checklists are critical to ensuring you've got everything covered
Great video. So informative and essential for anyone in the boating world. Thanks for doing this and giving out a sensible and mature take on this entire area. If things really turn upside down don't forget the R.N.L.I. Keep well and safe. James.
Well done Nestor! I look forward to and enjoy your videos, even the video about your car. Today, I noticed an odd coincidence. Sam Holmes (@samholmessailing) spotlighted Mark Sinclair of SV Coconut in his video today. @3:03 in your video here, you flashed a picture of Coconut. Even odder (to me) is I watched Sam's video just before clicking on yours. haha. Anyway, Keep up the great work.

Hi Nestor,
these are very useful hints. I would recommend a toolbox and spare parts as well.
solo sailing just hits different!

Very nice presentation! Stay safe.
love this
If you're planning to sail round the UK don't forget that includes Northern Ireland!
Waving Support! lol
You forgot the plain old American style CB radio. Don't get the old British FM thing.
Well done Nestor!
