I've spent most of my life as an angry, resentful member of the working class. An outsider with his nose pressed up against the glass. But I have nothing but compassion and charity for the victims of this latest fire. They are affluent because they are some of the most talented among us, people of merit and achievement. And the homes were architectural masterpieces, not only the buildings but the setting, the light, the incredible landscaping. A tragic loss for the country.
Christian- long term viewer of your channel, less for the sailIng content but more just for you - Your ability to see light in the depths of darkness and to have true perspective on a very difficult situation is nothing short of inspirational. I wish you both the very best and look forward to many more years of hearing your unique and light hearted take on the human condition (and sailing). All the very best from Australia.
Dear Christian, I do not know you personally, but am a subscriber to your channel and have been along (with great enjoyment), to each of your journeys to Hawaii, and know that you resided in the Palisades. You and family were the first people that I thought of when I learned of the fires. Your perspective is priceless and so appreciated. Thank you for sharing this personal journey.
Christian, your stoicism is inspiring. We only ever have the present and what memories we retain. Thanks for such a positive message and I look forward to seeing your adventures back out on the water.
I'm sorry for your loss, Christian. You undoubtedly have memories of a great life, and those memories can't be taken away. All the best from Australia.
Dear Christian, having been a fan of yours from the beginning and having read both your pacific crossing books. I just want to say how sorry I am for you and your family. Rebuild! Your resilience is highly impressive.
I so enjoy this sailing channel of yours. It keeps my dreams alive to eventually sail on the great blue. I thank you for that. Good luck on your rebuild and I'm glad that you are safe.
Having lost 2 homes to tornados, I can understand your loss. Its not easy to start over again but at least you are still here. My heart goes out to you and all the other victims of this terrible tragedy. We are only on this great Earth for such a short time and the only thing we take with us is our memories. Everything else is just convenient clutter. A lifetime of wants and needs gone in an instant. There will be new things to replace some of the loss, things that will do in a pinch. Other things will never be able to be replaced. You have made an impact on my life with your videos, books and your philosophy. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. I wish you and your lovely wife the best of luck. Fair winds and following seas!
Christian, I am so sorry for the loss of your home. I have been following you on RUclips for a few years now. You are an inspiration. Even in the midst of disaster, you have a certain calm about you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Respectfully Jon
Wow Christian! I am so sorry for this horrible loss. What a beautiful essay that put it all in perspective. That was such a lovely home, so many great memories. I can't imagine what you and Tracy must be feeling....So sad.
Dear Christian, so sorry for your loss. My condolences to you, Tracy and the family. Greatly enjoy your videos, have seen philosophy of sailing about 30 times or more!
Great way to look at your present and your past and recent past. You questioned Gods existence but not Satan. Yet as i listened i herd a person thanking God for over 30 years of life. We are dust and to dust we shall return. Thank you
Here on Cape Cod, we watched the catastrophe on the news, insulated from your reality. Thanks for doing this video because it makes the tragedy real. As you said, a tragedy like this really make us all realize what we have that's important. Onward and upward!!
My well wishes for you and your wife. I do understand the loss due to a fire. I lost a house to a fire but we , my wife and son did get thru and rebuild. There is great loss for memories and possessions but we have make more. You have a great way with words and make new outlook and meaning to life. Hang tough and keep it up because i have enjoyed your videos and your words of wisdom.
From an admiring fan in Adelaide, South Australia. I'm so sorry for what has happened and wish you all the best. You are an inspiration. Regards Mark Johns
Christian Williams, I love you. Ever since I discovered you and this channel, ever since I learned of your sailing background....all the accomplishments achieved.....I have admired you! As a fellow sailor with none of the accomplishments or accolades you've got under your belt, I felt a connection, a sincere and honest understanding. When I first learned of the wildfires, I thought of you and your family. Your command of the English language, both written and spoken, is second to none. And in this video you use it to express yourself, clearly defining the tradegy, your feelings, and the hope a man of your age has for the future. Thank you for making me realize how much I should be thankful for my situation.
Your words showing your calm and comfort in this tragic situation is comforting. I am so sorry for the loss of your house and your personal belongings. But what's more important is that you are still with us. Thoughts and prayers for you and your wife during these difficult times.
This video made the LA fire disaster very real for me. Your bravery in facing it is very touching. You're absolutely right about what is really important. Keep up doing your good work on youtube!
Christian - wow, my heart goes out to you and your wife. You speak with an eloquence, (much like you write) that is quite calming in a time of such devastating change. I've been a subscriber for some time and as a fellow sailor have enjoyed your videos, wit, and sensibility. My wife in fact, will watch your videos with me from time to time, as you remind her of her grandfather, who was a sailor as well. I'm sure that there have been, and will be days, of sadness. I'm about 20 years your junior, but as I age, I appreciate more of what we have and what we have access to. Our world, in this country especially, is increasingly material driven. Your perspective on this, as a sort of cleansing, is I'm sure not unique; but it certainly seems to help you keep everything in perspective. I pray for you and all those living with this disaster. I will leave you, with the same prayer I say for myself nearly daily.....Thank God for all that you are, all that you have, and all that you will be. God Bless.
You're starting fresh on a new voyage. My hope is that the Palisades will spring back to life, with you as part of its foundation. Best wishes as you build anew.
Thank you. Inspiration. Role model. Philosopher sailor blessed with abundant wisdom and great musical taste. I wish you and Tracy health and happiness as you go forward.
I have enjoyed your videos for several years. Your commentaries on the experience of sailing are immensely enjoyable and also inspirational. Very sorry to learn that your home was destroyed in the fire, along with those of so many others, but glad to hear that you and your wife are safe. I look forward to watching more of your videos in the future.
I have enjoyed many of your sailing videos. You are an educated and inspiring speaker. So sorry for your loss. I, too, have an annotated library the loss of which would hurt. Best wishes going forward
Hello Christian, So sorry for your loss. Following you for so many years, you are like a best friend, a family member. And I feel for you. Thank God you had insurance. I admire your attitude, and appreciate you sharing it with us. I look forward to your updates, and will keep you in my prayers.
Sir you are a true inspiration to me as an asperational sailor, and as a human being. Your attitude and philosophy is impressive, my best wishes to you and your family. I know you will rise like a phoenix and look forward to a video in happier times. From the UK ❤
My deepest condolences for your loss. You’re part of the inspiration of why I’m living aboard my beloved Centurion 47 and thanks to you I couldn’t be happier. Wishing you a speedy recovery from losing so many irreplaceable parts of yourself.
Very interesting. Can relate to your feelings about losing something in a fire. To me on a different scale but anyway. A year and a half ago the neighbor’s boat in our marina caught fire. The fire quickly spread to ours and there was nothing left of it when I came to the dock. It was a beautiful 40 foot sailboat that we really loved. It was sad of course. A bunch of stuff and memories were lost but no one got hurt and the boat was covered by insurance. Friends and people around us felt sorry for us but the sad feelings were overrun by a relief and an excitement to start something new. We’ve found and bought a new sailboat and are seeking new adventures on the seas. Christian, looking forward to see more of your adventures too.
Thanks for showing and telling your unfortunate story. I'm deeply moved by your dilemma. Let me extend my condolences for what you and others experienced and what you are now going through. My thoughts are with you.
I’m so glad to see you’re doing okay, mostly happy to hear your wonderful attitude about this. I’m nearly your age and this made me think about many things. I’m sure there must be a cleansing or a feeling of relief maybe to have “not so much” too. Or to be able to do anything & go anywhere……Be Safe & Happy! Can’t wait for that Sail.--
Christain, I am so sorry for the catastrophe. The heartache, and the inevitable trials and tribulations it will create for your friends and neighbors. You remain a true beacon of stoicism and contemplation in the face of such tragedy. A true enigmatic delight! Please continue to help others learn your wisdom.
There is nothing I can really express about this tragedy, but you can sure paint a picture with words. I find comfort in knowing there are good people like Christian Williams in the world. Somehow I know you’ll be OK in the end.
C, So insightful Difficult to witness such devastation and the impact on so many May you, your wife, family and the extended community rise above this tragedy intact and steadfast in your resolve to carry on ~ Now about those sunbrella projects …
So very sorry to hear of your loss, and the loss of so many as a result of these fires. I'm pleased that you are keeping a chin up, that you are keeping grateful eyes forward. Take heart that what matters most, you still have. And all the inspiration you give to so many here online is part of that. My own path is better because of you, despite that we'll never even meet. And I'm quite certain the same is true for countless others. Indeed, let's go sailing sooner than later. All my best to you.
I’m so sorry for all the things and memories lost in the fire. You asked somewhat rhetorically why you didn’t feel more anguish over the loss. Or it could just be you & Tracey have a strong foundation of self, of family, of community that gives you an incredible resilience. Thank you for sharing your story and being vulnerable with us. It would be interesting to hear more details of how you made it out and when you knew it was time to go. All the best as you start over at 81!

Well said
You only lose something when you’ve had something to begin with. I never had anything, so I never lost anything.
Come into this world with nothing and go out with nothing. Christian, your beautiful words remind us all to enjoy the ride.
Even in catastrophe you are a polished communicator. So glad you made it thru safely.

C,
So insightful
Difficult to witness such devastation and the impact on so many
May you, your wife, family and the extended community rise above this tragedy intact and steadfast in your resolve to carry on ~
Now about those sunbrella projects …
Wishing you strength on your journey and patience on this detour. Echoing TS Elliot "where the fire and the rose are one".
So very sorry to hear of your loss, and the loss of so many as a result of these fires. I'm pleased that you are keeping a chin up, that you are keeping grateful eyes forward. I’m so sorry for all the things and memories lost in the fire. You asked somewhat rhetorically why you didn’t feel more anguish over the loss. Sometimes the grief comes later after the shock, and the organizing of the logistics and the gratefulness of being alive wears off.
You are right let’s go sailing and thank you for your words of wisdom. I am sure “it ain’t easy”.
This is so devastating. I’m sorry to hear that but glad you are safe and still have your beautiful boat. Love your amazing videos and books.
What a wonderful human being 💙
You are a true philosopher, Mr. Williams. Glad you and yours are well, all things considered.
Christian, I am so sorry for you, and I admire the wise mindset you are sharing with us,. Take care.
Glad to see you, Tracey (&Thelonious II) are safe. Best to everyone in the days ahead.

Just finished reading your book Rarotonga and I’m very happy I bought it. It’s like hearing your voice telling the story to me. Yes, we are a community and I look forward to your next book, after you have got your stuff together. Thnx for sharing 🙏🏼
Sorry for your losses Christian. You're in my thoughts.
Thanks Christian. You are a sailor philosopher. Looking forward to a sail.

I bought a sailboat last summer. An Albin Express, one of the most popular small sailing boats in Sweden. The year before that I partook in a beginner course aimed at teaching complete novices to sail. I had never set foot on a sailboat before despite the fact that I have lived almost my entire, at that time 28 year old life, on an island in the middle of the Baltic sea. Before that all I knew about sailing was what I had learned from watching your videos. You were the biggest inspiration for me in this journey of learning about sailing boats and sailing and what all the weird names for various types of ropes are. It seems almost ironic that despite all of the forces of nature that you must have encountered all the years on the seas, it would be on land that you were to meet this unstoppable force, that wall of fire. But it is as you say, you have to keep moving forward. You never know what life has in store, good or bad. Anyway I guess I just want to express my gratitude for all that you've unknowingly taught me and extent my condolence for this great tragedy that has erased your home from the earth. I'm amazed that you keep your spirits up and seem so, relatively, unbothered. Take care of yourself and your family! I look forward to the next video. Cheers from Gotland!

Good on you Christian, onwards and upwards. Life is for living and you're doing it so positively. Lets go sailing!
I've watched your videos and read your books for years. My sincere condolences.

Greetings from Italy.
Thanks for letting us know what you've been through, fellow sailor.
It was quite a story you told. I hope you and your family can make t back to a stable state.
I, being a viewer, feel like I know you. You're the only person I knew who went through this.
All the best!
