This song was the one that propelled Queen into star status. It sort of set a style that became theirs, it showed what Freddie could do with music. Love it! There isn’t anyone like Queen! The four of them made fabulous music together! Thanks for a great reaction!

Freddie, who wrote "Killer Queen" once explained: “It’s about a high-class call girl. I’m trying to say that classy people can be whores as well. That’s what the song is about, though I’d prefer people to put their interpretation upon it - to read into it what they like.”
“Killer Queen” was the first Queen single to successfully ‘cross the pond’, becoming a top 20 hit in the U.S. and Canada, as well as a top 30 hit in Australia.
Queen recorded "Killer Queen" after returning from their very first tour to the States (they accompanied Mott the Hoople on their American tour). Unfortunately, Queen's lead guitarist, Brian May developed hepatitis near the end of the tour and Queen had to bring him back to England. While Brian recovered in the hospital, the rest of the band went back into the studio.
They recorded most of Killer Queen during this time. Brian worried that the band would replace him but he didn't need to worry. John Deacon, Queen's bass guitar player, covered for Brian by also playing the lead guitar so they could record the music track. The band made sure to leave space on the record for Brian to be able to insert his own iconic guitar solo when he felt better.
BTW,, when the band would come to visit Brian in the hospital, they would bring a copy of what they were working on for him to hear. He was shocked when he initially heard the more progressive, lighter sound of " Killer Queen". It was so different from the heavier hard rock sound that they did on their first album. It might be seen as the beginning of Queen expanding into other musical arenas outside of rock.
Queen has always been experimental with their music, constantly pushing the bounds.

    • @neuralmute

I find it incredible the kind of brains that were in that band. Freddie, with his multiple languages, multiple instruments, golden voice, and degree in graphic design and costume design, was the *least* educated of the bunch! John was definitely brilliant, Brian's probably close to a certified genius, (because how many people are rock stars who casually finish a PhD then do some work with NASA and the ESA? Besides Dexter Holland.), and Roger Taylor being very nearly a dentist is impressive too - it's not an easy field to get into, but he's no doubt happier as a drummer!
But yeah, their super-creative analog effects in the studio were pretty amazing. The fact that they worked is even more amazing half the time! And some of those sounds that Roger could make with his voice...

Queen has a song for everyone. Brian’s guitar 🎸 red special is called the 5th member of Queen 🫅. If you want to hear Roger sing (drummer) I’m in Love with my Car 🚗 Montreal 81. You’ll be amazed at how he can sing. Queen has 3 singers & 4 songwriter’s, 3 had college degree’s. Roger had a bachelors degree in biology, John (Bass) how a degree in electronics engineering, Freddie graphic design, Dr Brian May (lead guitar) has a PHD in Astro physics he also at times works with NASA on different projects and one of the best guitarist in the world 🌍

This was the song that first introduced the 9 year old me to Queen.
I remember watching it on Top Of The Pops on a Thursday evening, I sat with my mouth open in awe. They became my life long favourite band in an instant. I rushed out to buy their back catalogue with birthday and pocket money (allowance).
When my eldest son told me they were having twin boys, I joked that they should call them Roger & Freddie. My future daughter-in-law said she loved the idea of Freddie. I now have identical twin grandsons named Jake & Freddie (sorry Rog). They were born 6 weeks early on the 21st anniversary of Freddie Mercury's death.
A couple of years later my son married his lovely lady and she chose to walk up the aisle to Fat Bottomed Girls.
Keep the Queen coming my friend, we are a loyal lot and love new reactions to songs we have loved for decades.
Sending you love & respect, Helen the UK. xxx

Such an unlikely mashup of Glam Rock, British Music Hall (Vaudeville), and Bubblegum Pop, could have only happened in the early 1970’s, and only with Queen. This is the song that crystallized their signature sound, and musically put them “on the map”.

  • @yvrkid7070

Since Brian made his own guitar and John made an amp for it Brian could make his guitar make unique and extraordinary sounds. He said he liked to make the guitar "sing" like it had a voice. They are all geniuses with an incredible work ethic. This is a lip sync on a British music show called Top of the Pops. They didn't like to lip sync but it was required on this show. This song still, after all these years, sounds like no other song. It's perfection.

All four of the musical members of Queen were geniuses. Each had a number one hit - the only band that accomplished that. Freddie’s voice and songwriting is missed by everyone who ever heard it. Killer Queen was one song which was really out of the format that I usually write in, said Freddie in a 1974 interview. „Usually the music comes first, but the words came to me, and the sophisticated style that I wanted to put across in the song came first. No, I’d never really met a woman like that. A lot of my songs are fantasy. I wrote it in one night. I scribbled down the words in the dark one Saturday night and the next morning I got them all together and I worked all day Sunday and that was it.”
If you listen to it attentively once again, you will notice, that Freddie was harmoninsing with himself. The performance is just lip synching, but extremely well done!

You should watch the live aid show from 1985. Queen stole the show that night and helped get millions of dollars for live aid. The greatest show they ever put on. Watch it you will not be disappointed.

I really enjoy your keen observations! The lyrics Queen penned for all of their songs are in a class all there own-the words themselves, the phrasing, innuendo, the types of stories they tell. Killer Queen lyrics are my absolute fave from the first word to the last. I still know all by heart, thank goodness for liner notes that came with albums (70s-80s)!

You are one of the only people i have known/seen who really gets what I mean when I think about Queen's talking guitar. I have thought that since i was 12, but never really had someone agree with me out loud...nice.

Queen absolutely amazing talented artists, they were at the forefront of musical videos in them times, all the members of Queen have written no1 hits, there greatest hits album is still the best selling album of all time in the Uk 🇬🇧, all the members of Queen were amazing musicians, they have sold 300 million albums worldwide, and have a fast catalog of songs , Queens live performances are legendary, check out Under Pressure live at Wembley Uk 1986 , also Live Aid performance at Wembley 1985 , I attended that live concert Queen stole the show!

Really enjoy seeing your open-minded rock innocence meet these various geniuses. If you like hearing guitars 'talk,' then consider checking out Peter Frampton doing 'Do You Feel?' on *The Midnight Special.* In that song he is not using electronics to make those sounds. That's him and the guitar, analogue sound.
