Love old Queen. I spent my 24th B-Day at the Queen concert in Montreal, in 1981. If you haven't reacted to the song Somebody to Love from that concert, you sure should. I was in the 8th row. Freddie put passion into everything he did. And his on-stage charisma was like no other. Freddie Mercury, early 1970s, - I won't be a rock star. I'll be a legend. -
You have to think of this song as a 3 piece masterpiece. The first part is the young man sadly admitting to murder to his mother. The operetta is the judge & jury at court and the rock part is the acceptance and hopelessness of the sentence. Queen blew the roof off current music with this masterpiece. The technical ability & laying track over track was expert level. It is still the GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIME.
This could also be interpreted as him coming out as as gay man, killing his prior self and then having to live with the judgement of others (back in the day, this was not an easy thing to do) and then dealing with his new life.
It’s really a 3 act opera. His confession, his judgement and his punishment for murder. They overdubbed their voices hundreds of times in parts of this, so much so that the tape, as it was then, became so thin and fragile it was losing the effect of the overdubbing. The initial part is just Freddie overdubbing himself over and over.
@@nono86753that’s how i interpreted it when i first heard it. he had AIDS also, which would make it sound like he’s accepting his disease and coming to terms with it. lyrics like “body’s aching all the time” and “i don’t wanna die” made me take it that way
The murder is a personal one, he said pulled MY TRIGGER, now he's dead. It's about Farrouhk Bulsara becoming Freddie Mercury. Finding fame is "caught in a landslide, no escape from reality". Overwhelming, the operatic middle portion describes the many stages of fame, including "Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me". That is a descent into wanton carnality, sexual deviance and the true nightmare of Aids. On many levels, this song is prophetic. At the time this was written, homosexuality was largely unspoken about, except in nuance. "Body's aching all the time; goodbye everybody, I've got to go; got to leave you all behind and face the truth". Freddie feeling judged, and at that time, the headlines in Britain were highly judgemental. At the 3rd section, anger comes forth, and Freddie throws off feelings of shame, and asserts his power, through his singing, his true self. Nothing really matters, is resignation; the journey was a wild one, so any way the wind blows.....Love you, miss you, never forget you, Freddie, your masterpiece lives on...❤❤❤
@danicaperkins7511 This song came out in 1975. Aids happened in the 1980s, maybe even in the late seventies. However, when Queen made this song, Freddie didn't have the disease at that time.
This song changed the face of rock and roll forever. Nobody had ever heard a true rock opera before and it blew our minds. No music collection was complete unless you owned the album A Night At The Opera (4th studio album)
I first heard this nearly 50 years ago in my friend’s bedroom on vinyl when it’s was first released. It’s amazing that a whole new generation are discovering Queen.
Same. It goes without saying that watching the reaction of 'newcomers' lol, hear these classic songs are like hearing them for the first time all over again. Love love love these reaction videos. I'm right back to 12 years old again.
Hey Jamoris, we were all blown away when this song came out, just like you. It blew our minds in the best way. Queen sounded different on every song, and took us on the ride of our lives! Keep listening!
One of my absolute favorite Queen songs is one most people who just have cultural references of Queen don't even know about and when they hear it, still don't know it's Queen. Sleeping on the Sidewalk. Absolutely amazing.
This is, what was called back in the day of release, a Rock Opera. I remember when it was released Halloween 1975, my Momma told us that this was the transformation of music. And then, five years later, the 80s music. Queen took OFF! They were individually Brilliant men, but together, they were Rock Perfection.
Born in 64. Blessed to grow up with Queen, Zepplin, Rush, Boston, Pink Floyd and so many other great bands like Heart, Max Webster, Nazareth and so many more.
Believe it or not but Queen did this masterpiece before they became famous! I'm very happy that you love their music and I hope you will play more Queen! 👑🌈💙🫶
That first acapella portion is all just Freddie laying track after track to get the depth of several voices and that kind of choir effect. This song was recorded on 24 track tape and multitracked so many times that the tape became transparant. The rest of the song is Freddie, Brian and Roger on the harmonies, with Roger (drummer) doing the really high notes. Today with the newer technology, the track would be recorded just once then that same track would be layered back on as many times wanted. Back when Queen did this, they just had to sing the track many, many times to get the sound they wanted. There processes were very organic compared to how things are done today. the interesting part of recording this song is that it was done in little pieces and only Freddie had any idea of what it was going to end up sounding like. Once all the bits were finished the band finally got to hear the song put together for the first time. So there was no real rehearsal of this song, they would just lay down several recordings of a few notes at the same time and then it was put in the can until it was ready to be assembled. Thank you for your reaction. 1.6 billion views here on RUclips alone. This song and band are iconic. 50 years later it is still a song that would be a hit today.
Possibly the most famous song ever. Freddie was born in Zanzibar, Africa. His voice was unique and perfect. The guitarist is underrated because he was backing up one of the greatest showmen ever, Freddie. But he was a great guitarist...and an actual astrophysicist. He wrote the song '39 for Queen that dealt with Einsteinian physics in a way that made sense to listeners. "Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me."
When this was first released just before Christmas 1975, it changed our perspective forever. Both the song and the video were ground breaking. I loved it then and love it now after countless times watching and listening to it. Queen, THE best band ever. Get Greatest Hits 1, 2 or 3 choose a song and you will like it, can't go wrong.
I absolutely LOVED your reaction to this song! Now......go to Greenday's page and pinned there you will find a crowd of 70k people singing this song. Greenday loves Queen and play the song before they come out to perform and noticed the crowd singing to it, so they taped it and pinned it to their official site. You'll LOVE it. It's apparently the National Anthem of the UK.
I always watch bohemian rhapsody reactions. This was pre auto tuned ! Freddy was a genius, the complexity of this song is off the charts. The first rock/opra, hard to believe just how old and still captivating this song is. Thanks for watching.❤
I'm 65, was 15 when this song came out. Apparently it was way ahead of its time for the US. Today it is considered a musical masterpiece of monumental proportions. The good ole music of the 70's!
Sorry pal. Epic song for sure. But not best group ever. That was the Beatles. Not best song ever... that's a tall task there. Too many to enter that contest to reply here. But, no. Queen's absolute best for sure. But best above all others all time... that's a real stretch IMO. Truth.
My first time running across your channel and I have to tell you that watching you experience this song and Queen for the first time was one of, if not THE, best things I have seen on this app!! I am now a subscriber!
The most epic song *ever*! At the beginning, that is all the late, great Freddie Mercury's voice layered together! Freddie owned the stage! Brian May, the guitarist, made that guitar with his dad with parts they had around the house. Freddie had 4 extra teeth, but he never had them removed. He didn't want to take a chance on doing anything that might affect his performance. This came out when I was 15 (1975) and this was a very innovative music video, 6 years before MTV started broadcasting. The success of this started the trend of making music videos for bands (some had been done before, but not with this level of success).
The intro is all Freddie, singing each part and stacked, as you thought. But Freddie also has a special quality to his voice known as sub-harmonics, so that gives the sound an even fuller and richer dynamic. Loved your reaction ❤
This song was Freddie Mercury's Rock-Opera masterpiece. I loved seeing them live, Mercury came alive on stage and worked the crowd like a virtuoso. Every member was a literal genius. Freddie saw the band playing with a different lead singer, and talked them into firing the guy so he could be their lead.
A rhapsody is a piece of music that is enthusiastically, extravagantly ecstatic with different sounds & tempos blending into to one piece essentially telling the same story. Generally, there are 4 parts as in this one. To say this is the greatest song ever written is almost an understatement. Glad you enjoyed it and your trip down the queen rabbit hole will be an experience you will never ever forget.🖤🎶🖤
No, you weren't trippin' at the intro. It is only Freddie's voice you're hearing performing each part. Check out Queen's 20 minute set at "Live Aid" in 1985 & "White Queen" at The Odeon in 1975. Thanks!

An autobiographical song by Freddie Mercury. Even his bandmates didn't know what this song was about. A foreshadowing of his ultimate death.
I think the most common theory is that Freddie Mercury wrote this song about what it was like for him when he came out.
