In two of the cases I mentioned, I know that the two chaps who married their deceased wives' sisters had wonderful marriages with their first wives and there were certain similarities that appealed to them in marrying the sisters. My uncle who married his deceased brother's widow was extremely close to his brother (out of the five brothers) and no-one could see any problem at all with him marrying the widow. Perhaps it's a British thing and Britons are more tolerant than Americans. It's certainly not a scandalous thing.

It was also a duty according to the Old Testament. If there were surviving brothers one was expected to take in the widow and make her his wife, too. ususlly the oldest. Likely a way to provide for widows and orphans.
