I bought one of these years ago and have used it only a handful of times..I've only used it just for hard boiled eggs and they have come out perfect every time..I love it!!
probablt needs a light coating of cooking spray for poached eggs
yeah and just turn it upside down and plop em out
I love my egg genie! For my poached eggs I will rub down the inside of the poach tray with coconut oil. after cooked, turn it upsidedown and tap or light shake the tray. The eggs will pop out beautifully! Absolutely love those things!
For poaching eggs you should spray the tray before you start the cooking, When They are done you can tip the tray to one side and the egg will almost drop out. If it doesn't you can use an ordinary butter knife (not the shovel that you seem to like) around the edges and it will pop out easier with no mess.
you have to use distilled water with the machine to avoiding browning also have to add cooking spray with the pouched eggs it makes it super easy they just fall out... Other wise loved the review and just ordered one online. Great job with the review.
your right on the cooking spray. it's just common sense.
+lovingorca * you're right...
We have these things everywhere, in Holland. Very common. A quick tip, from experience, poke the hole in the BOTTOM, the round end. Less prone to cracking or leaking. Always poke the bottom! And really, just peel em from the top, even soft boiled eggs can be peeled like that, then just eaten from the shell, or scooped from it onto bread, or salad, or whatever. You get used to it pretty quickly. There's also a trick of rolling them on the counter with your hand, I believe? Don't remember it exactly, but it basically makes it super easy to take off the shells in two halves. You'd probably have to look that up, but yeah, you get used to peeling and cooking eggs really fast.
The directions for this machine, at least the ones sold in 2015 say to coat the poached egg trays with butter, but you can use Pam too.
I'm gonna binge watch all your review videos
Hey Jack. Small suggestion with getting your soft boiled egg out of the shell without breaking the White or the Yolk.
After boiling them (in the egg steamer or 6mins in a pot) put the eggs in cold water (a bit of ice helps here). Cool them till they are easy to handle. Don't worry they will still be hot inside.
Crack them by tapping on the table top a few times and peal. The shell will come off easy in big pieces and you won't snag the White or rip it.
I do this every time and rarely do I break my boiled egg. Even when it's got runny yolk. :)

Or just cut top bit off the egg and eat it from it's shell with a tea spoon. That's how I've eaten my boiled eggs since a kid. I don't know if that's popular in the U.S.
Cooling the eggs in cold water does work. I just replace the boiling water in my pot with cool water and leave them for a couple of minutes. When the water is about tepid, the eggs are perfect temperature.
Most poached egg devices require you to either spray lightly with cooking spray or add a half a teaspoon of water into each tray prior to cooking.I have a microwave poached egg device, a tray of 2 eggs & I simply add the half teaspoon & they 'flop' right out,no mess.Did the Egg Genie have the same suggestion on the instructions? Perhaps if you try that & it works, U can make a part II video addendum to this one. BTW, I bought the microwave egg poacher for like $2 at the grocery store & it works!
little hint for pouching the eggs with this, rub veggy oil on the tray
vegetable oil is disgusting
That's you're opinion but as I've been told no one cares what anyone's opinion is.
I use Pam or Butter spray, they fall right out then.
for the poached egg tray, a quick spray of Pam or some other butter/margarine on the inside and your poached eggs pop out and are perfect!
this is absolutely ridiculous! These electric egg boilers are sold in Germany ever since the 1920s or 1930s. They are nothing special in Germany, everybody knows them and in the US they sell them as Egg Genie all brand new? ROFL
DracoLivor And since millenas, people use a pot to boil them! How innovative is that!
+DracoLivor -- They've been sold in the USA for decades, too. No one says they're new. This is just a new version, being marketed to a different market of TV viewers rather than kitchen store shoppers.
Hey jack, I love eggs :L
Thing about the poached eggs, try buttering the poaching tray before putting the eggs in there, it should make it a lot easier to get them out.
Although to be honest, I'm horrible at poaching eggs, I somehow scrambled a poached egg this morning!
Any tips on making perfect poached eggs?
Note from europe: Works great. My parents have been using a machine like this for longer than I can remember. They must have bought in the early 70's and it still works...
I have one of these that I inherited from my MIL when she passed away. For the poached eggs, I've just put a coating of butter in the tray and they come out of there great... Just something for you to try when you and if you get the chance if you happen to have company that likes poached eggs (I personally can't stand them lol)
I am sure that the instructions say to spray some nonstick spray in the poached egg tray. I have one and love it. Now I just hate peeling the eggs haha.
I have something similar, it's by Cuisinart, I think. It works really well, and I found that to get the poached eggs out, you just spray the tray with a bit of Pam, or according to my instructions, 'lightly butter' it. Then, they will slide right out. Personally, I just use water, and carefully slide a rubber spat around the edges. But if you ask me, you can only make a real poached egg with a pot of water.
Makes great soft and hard boiled, though.
You should have sprayed the poach tray with non-stick cooking spray. That will allow the poached eggs to slide right out.
Jack!!! Thank you! Cannot wait to watch this!!!! I just got one. And…. No directions! Help! I watched the entire video. Great job 👏 🎊
@angelpichu1 poaching an egg is either steaming or boiling. Cooking an egg using water and not fat / oil. That is poaching.
For the poached eggs you should try spraying some non-stick spray in the little container things.. that might work.
To get the poached eggs out just use the same technique that you did to get the soft boiled eggs out of shell
i love your videos..... its 5:02 am and I cant stop watching..........and LA is a very busy city......Keep making the videos..... i'm 14 and i love baking and you channel is entertaining>>
I love watching Jack's shows!! I was just thinking, "why didn't I think of doing something like this?" lol.
Multi Purposed creation, I like it. About the sticky shredded poached eggs from the last experience... I would have washed/dried/ and primarily shine coated the 4 poached egg tray with oil slightly decreasing cooking time, then quickly flip over the result unto a clean presentation plate hoping freshly poached and oil seasoned eggs would not break. Cheers!
heres a tip for pealing eggs, if you roll a boiled egg along a counter surface it breaks the shell almost perfectly for you to just pull it off in one go if you do it right:)
jack charges for shipping now, and the shipping is more than the product itself, unfortunate, value out the window. 22$ for 10$ seasoning kit.
I found this piece while moving, as it was tucked away in my garage, I opened it only to find the cup and the instructions gone, I'm glad I watched your channel before making any poached eggs so...I'm going to try spraying it with PAM and see if that works. ;-). ....Thanks for creating this channel.
if you like culflowr, try this for steaming different veggies , it works perfectly
I agree, non-stick spray might help though I can also poach an egg perfectly in the microwave in about 1.5 mins.
I do however think this is great for hard-boiled eggs which I eat 6 egg whites per day and it's nice to not have to think about cooking them right or forgetting to set a timer.
First of all, soft boiled eggs are supposed to be served in an egg cup and only the top of the shell is to be removed. You add seasoning to the egg inside the shell and eat it with a spoon. You can also tip thin pieces of toast into the egg yolk (this is how the English eat them).
Secondly, the use of cooking spray will allow you to easily remove the poached eggs from the tray. Years ago, some pots can with egg poaching trays that had individual metal cups fitted into a tray that sat in the pot above boiling water.
I have one, but not an Egg Genie, it makes soft boiled eggs perfectly. Actually it's all I use it for. Put soft boiled eggs in an egg cup and cut off the top, shell and egg. Eat with egg spoon. My kids love eggs and soldiers. Soldiers is just the toast cut into strips that they dip into the egg.
Electric egg cookers are very common in Europe, they are well worth the $20-30 more so if you like soft boiled eggs or just like to eat eggs often.
Eggs are done in about the time it takes to get water boiling in a pot. Never had an egg crack on me, always got the expected result. I have the Krups 7 egg, similar price and concept. I haven't tried a side by side test, but i swear steam cooked eggs are easier to peal as well.
Also these are perfect for barracks/dorms, eggs are cheap, tasty, filling and high protein. Had one in my barracks room years ago, always hard boiled eggs in the fridge for quick snacks and it got a ton of use.
I only use it for hard boiled eggs, its great for that. Don't need to poke a hole in it, or measure water just fill the little cup up and run they don't crack
You have a good ear. No offense taken. It wasn't the camera. It was the clip microphone that I was wearing. It was crackling in the beginning because of low batteries. I didn't know that until we went to edit. I have since replaced all the batteries and will keep an closer eye on it. Thanks for watching. The video is still processing so it won't be HQ for another hour.
I finally made myself try mine today. I have to say, it does a fine job. Best hard-boiled eggs I've ever had.
We've had these machines in Norway for ages. The one I have got in my cupboard I got from my mom, and it's bought in 1985 or so :P
I can't poach an egg to save my life, and I graduate in the spring. I've gotten very close though. If you do the swirling water trick your chef has probably taught you, it'll help. Also make sure you add enough vinegar to the water to really tighten up your whites without distorting the flavor.
Why can't you be nice like everyone else and just tell me to grease it next time and it won't stick. Why so harsh?
Have one, use it, love it.
they had those in the USA for a long time when you poch the eggs you are suppose to grease the little pan that they eggs go in first. and it will work.
poach
Spray Pam on it before hand I mean even I thought of that, LOL.
I agree. I use a small brushing of butter myself, but spray would be great for those who are health conscious.
you have very nice hands Jack. I like your style and thoroughness. I wouidn't keep that item simply because when I boil eggs I do it by the dozen. So, it's a no go for me. thank you so much for sharing. You be well
This product is just a reboot of a device that Black and Decker made in the early 70s. 40 years later, it still works.
I will try that and let you know.
you should put some oil before steam the eggs. This is what we do even when we use the tradition way to boil the egg in the bowl in Asia.
You can use cooking spray, like many have said, or a little butter would be good also..
youre no chef you sally!!!!! who breaks eggs like that? you! you do!
you simply have the best reviews out there
@mugsieboy102 Wow. did you leave it on with no water? What happened? any photos?
I'm getting one for my son to use at his college dorm...good enough for hard boiled eggs!
It probably says somewhere in the directions that you glanced at that you need to spray the poaching tray with non-stick spray.
You should have used spray oil on the Poaching thing and it would not have
stuck to the plastic.
yea the poaching tray doesnt work living in a small apartment i cant spend money on dunkin donoughts every day so this is a great product love it i eat my 2 hard boiled eggs every morning then im off 2 work
@angelpichu1 somewhat like a soft boiled egg but instead of boiling it u crack the egg into boiling water and use a spoon to push the egg whites so that it covers the egg yolk COMPLETELY so when u cut into it the yolk flows out if u dun cover the yolk completely when u take it out the yolk will flow out
that works well my uses it for hardboiled egg pretty cool lots for easter and for deviled eggs for thanksgiving
to peel eggs take a spoon get right under shell peel under cold water have to have eggs sit for a minute first done it many times
Try putting butter or cooking spray in the poached egg tray it would stop the eggs from sticking.
hey jack you should spray the poach tray with nonstick spray before so it will come out perfect
great suggestion. i will try greasing the poaching tray.
Question..... Always with any type boiled egg I put in very cold water for at least a minute or so and then crack & peel the shell. Makes it easier and comes right out. Also when poaching them I do believe you used the wrong spatula. It was of the rubber made material and way too big. They make the very small ones now out of silicon and those would work great.
You're right. Having not been exposed to a particular cooking method undoubtedly reflects my level of intelligence and promiscuity. I feel so fortunate to have been given your superior perspective. :)
You can also put some salt into the water to stop it from cracking the egg.
I sprayed with oil before poaching. Works well.
Thanks for the demo! I woulda bought this for the poached eggs, but thx for showing how flawed that is! Well, I may get it for perfect level of doneness of soft-medium.
Jacks sauce add is as cheesy as as seen on tv
when ur poaching it try greasing it with butter so it wont stick, then turn it upside down and tap the bottom and c if they fall out
When I make deviled eggs, or any hard boiled egg that people will see...I poke a hole in the pointy end...it helps the sulfer escape....no green yolks!
0MikeBanks0, you make me laugh. I want to spray spam more often. Thanks for having my back. :D
@paatchen you need to test this and let me know. I will talk about it.
before i even clicked on this i was already thinking he is gonna hate it cause it was probably to hard of work
I have something like this but mine was bought 13 years ago but it works exactly the same way.
It's a very usefull device but i prefere to cook softboiled eggs the traditional way.
Jack, thanks for the great video. Looking at it, the soft-boiled was a disaster in my opinion. I know it was OK for you, but when my wife makes me soft-boiled eggs, the albumen has turned white but is still runny, and the yolk is like a marble. Pop that marble into your mouth and bite, and you'll get delicous, runny yolk all over your tongue. It's heavenly, Jack.
And she does it with only a basin and a plate, in less than 5 minutes.
Soft boiled - the yolk is still runny when cooked
Hard boiled - the yolk is cooked all the way, hence it's "hardened"
I like the product reviews. How about the Fasta Pasta? Cooking pasta in the microwave quick, easy, with little cleanup...maybe...
He did it. It's in one of his later videos.
Awesome video's. One thing rub it with olive oil first. Then use a smaller kitchen tool to get them out. Keep up the good work.
Does anyone else get the feeling he's about to sing Chocolate Rain at any moment?
man every time i watch ur shows i get hungry i hear my stamach rumble every time
I think for the poached egg, the tray should have pop out bottoms so you can remove the poached egg without it breaking
use spray and then turn upside down tap th bottom and they fall out
+jayboney el toro Thats what I would have done in the first place too! It's just common sense. I feel like he doesn't do a fair reveiw by doing common sense things as using oil spary before cooking it.
+jayboney el toro yeah I was definitely questioning if he greased them, all he needs to do is spray them with a little pam. Its the same for the little egg poachers that you place in a normal pan. The only thing I ever used poached eggs for is eggs benedict and if this worked well it would be awesome, because who doesn't like eggs benedict?!
lol brother god bless
Do a timer for how long it takes to boil an egg in a pan of water normally.
Actually, eggs can be difficult. After all, the pleats in a chef's toque are the 101 ways a chef can cook an egg. I know those were some of the more hellish days in culinary school.
Need to grease the poach tray.
Maybe spray the poaching tray with cooking spray so they slide out?
Kind of funny that this has a longer cord than the turkey fryer you used. SAD rather
love the dead flies on your window sill and whatever that crap is running down the wall!
He has the right to advertise, if you don't like it just skip it. It's not like it's had to do.
Just a suggestion, for the poached eggs it might have worked better if you had lubed the little tray things...
"It's flawless" - I don't know how one can mess up a boiled egg. Eggs taste good no matter what you do with them. :P
+Debasish Ray Chawdhuri "I don't know how one can mess up a boiled egg."
It happens all the time: rubbery whites, grainy yolks, green yolks, sulfur taste... A flawless hard-cooked (never boiled) egg is something that takes knowledge and practice.
@TheresNoAinApple i live in the OC
for the poached eggs it might work s little better if you spray some cooking oil on it.
I watched this video and checked out Amazon.com. I bought a different brand egg cooker, paying about $13. It works fantastic! Easy as pie. :)
I picked one up at our local second-hand store for $4 but there was no cup. How does the amount of water work?
I Love your Product Reviews some of them are so funny keep them coming
Maybe you can coat the sections with butter so the come out better and won't break
or just put your eggs in a pot of water...
6min for soft
8 min for medium
10min for hard boiled.
its so easy
