    Very good point Daniel on finding cool non-coin items at coin shows. Last weekend I was a dealer (my fourth show as a dealer) in a small show. A veteran dealer told me beforehand that if I did not have enough "Coin Inventory" then I should try to add other collectibles to take up the slack. Wow was he right. I was also selling vintage Marble King marbles, coin banks, Civil war memorabilia and World's Fair items. Dealers that also carry other items makes them "stand out" amongst the sea of graded Morgan dollars.

    Great video and recommendations for how to behave at a coin show. In your last video you referenced Mr Haney from Green Acres, in this one you reference emotions and Vulcans from Star Trek. Anybody who can accomplish that, you know you're dealing with the right guy. Live long and prosper Daniel.

    You are so correct Sir. My very 1st time at a coin show. I made a point of buying something. And ended up buying 6 -10 different things from different dealers. The experience of chatting with these guys were outstanding. Infact, they were all excited about my visit. One dealer just blessed me with a 1955 proof set calling my attitude remarkable.😍

    Okay, fair warning, what I am about to say here some of you won't like. My teenage son and I have been regulars at the Orlando FUN show for the past couple of summers. Many of the dealers there are helpful and informative. Unfortunately, we have also discovered that some won't even acknowledge my son even when he had a respectable Morgan collection to trade, sell or just talk about. Some just seem perfectly happy buying and selling with other vendors. I think this does a tremendous disservice to the casual or beginning numismatists. Last year, one vendor even tried to scam my son and I on a coin. I've been collecting on and off for over 40 years and, when I called the guy out on his bull**** lowballing, he got all nasty and we went somewhere else. The same is true of a local coin shop that lied to my son about the validity of a coin grade. We trusted them and had spent hundreds of dollars there and the owner flat-out deceived us. So, in conclusion, I generally think coin show vendors and sellers tend to be well-intentioned. But there are definitely some that give numismatics a bad rep and have the social skills of a plant. And as far as the hobby reaching to any demographic other than MIDDLE-AGED WHITE MEN, forget about it. If you want long-term growth in the hobby and more attendance at coin shows or shops, the field is going to have to rethink its approach over the long term be more welcoming to EVERYONE in the community.

    There is always a couple of dealers at a show who are unfriendly. They may have a great inventory, but they sit there with their arms folded, looking kinda mean. There are plenty of friendly dealers, who are there to sell coins, and not just to show off their inventory. Visit them.

    When I go to coin shows the first thing I do is visit each and every table. But I remain silent and look for coins I really want. When I see what I like, the second round I will ask a a question on a coin. If several tables have the same coin I like I look at price and then I will buy the best deal. I don't waste dealers time especially if there are a few customers behind me. I make very little talk because a show is amsometimes the best for dealers and buyer.

    Great point about negotiating and not letting it get personal. The only coin shop within 50 miles of me is the lobby of a sign/shirt print shop. Their prices on cheaper coins are reasonable, but anything valued over $50-$75 is at least 40 percent above eBay Sold auctions. Offers to buy are even worse. They offered me $600 for a 1909-S VDB NGC F15. By keeping my emotions out of it, I didn't risk bad blood, and now they happily let me cherrypick new purchases of bulk silver. They have their reasons for high prices and low offers, and I'm guessing the coins are a hobby to bring in a little extra cash.

    The benefit of a coin show is that you have dozens or sometimes even hundreds of coin dealers all together in one place so you dont have to take the time, trouble and expense of going to many different places in order to see, buy and sell coins. That's worth a lot. And most of them are free to attend! And the benefit of a coin dealer is that they are providing a product or service that you cant easily find on your own. That's also worth a lot. If you think the price for a coin is too high, you can vote w your feet or wallet or pocketbook and go somewhere else. If enough people do that, the dealers/suppliers/distributors have no choice but to reduce their prices to some degree.

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  Год назад

      How come very few people make the same claim? Was your currency errors minor, medium or major? It sounds like to me they aren’t dramatic enough and you also showed your displeasure so obviously the dealers are not going to respond to you positively. You’re one reason I did this video. You get all bent b cause you didn’t get what you wanted. So you try to make the dealers look bad.

  • @Timothy--vb7rr
    @Timothy--vb7rr Год назад +3

    I got to ask for shows. Have you ever had a customer pick 20-25 items and claim they will be right back? They would look around other tables and leave (Why someone would waste their own time and yours is nutz)I did it once 20 years ago, then never would hold it unless paid. (Argue with you that they will be back. I explained, that other customers may want them and I didn't consider them sold. They would get mad at me. Nutz!) It happened a lot. Or would offer a low ball on $1000's, If you didn't agree with the offer. (Walk away and you have to put all that inventory back.)

    • @thesilveraura2177
      @thesilveraura2177 Год назад +2

      I'll gladly hold a few items for someone, (and a lot more for regular customers) but 20-25 items for a stranger is a definite no.
      Don't think that the odds of someone buying those items is zero.......I once offered to set aside a bracelet for someone that had interest in it but whom had just arrived at that antique show and wanted to browse. (There was roughly 2000 dealers there) The lady said "that's okay, the chances of someone buying it are slim, I'll be back."
      Two hours later another woman sees it, tries it on and buys it. The woman who initially wanted it came back and was looking for it......and when I told her that someone bought it, she was none-too pleased and knew she screwed up. 😏

      If you want to buy from collectors then you're still going to pay dealer prices. You need to become a dealer and open your own shop to buy like that. Buying from brokers isn't a good way to do it, you will be just fine buying at the shows or finding you a good Facebook group.
