- Two Just Stop Oil eco-warriors have now glued themselves to the frame of a Constable painting the Hay Wain at the National Gallery.
The protesters, who said they were a couple, shouted their demands for the government to end new extractions for oil and gas as their hands were glued to the masterpiece described as one of the “greatest and most popular English paintings” ever.
Student activist Hannah Hunt, 23, shouted to onlookers: “Yes my hand is glued to this painting but there is blood on the hands of the government.”
A National Gallery Spokesperson said police have been called to the exhibit which has been closed to the public.

Galleries and museums need to grow a pair. This is the third one I think.
Just evacuate the room. Lock them in and turn off lights and heating / air conditioning. Leave them there
Exactly.
👏👊👏 Well said
I’m pretty sure that if you heat the room or cool it too much it could, I say could (because I don’t know) damage or flake the art work
@@pubg-blsy3352 Agreed. But I think that is something that takes months / years to take effect. Although Im no expert. A small price to pay I think, as they will continue to do this and sooner or later a major art piece will get badly damaged.
A bullet is easier. They want to spread their thoughts? Well, they can spread them all over the floor
Are they protesting against oil paint too?
No. Also that’s a big difference. Oil paints are naturally harmful to the environment. At least not traditionally. It’s just that obviously you can pen oil with oil together to get attention, plus these are very important artworks and plenty of people see them every day which means they are a good area to get people to notice and a whole group of different people to hear the message of the impact on the climate as a result of using fossil fuels. Fully stand with these people.
Jesus man that seems like a lot of hassle just to get laid
Way way way underrated tweet
I was thinking the same. I know a guy who went vegan to get laid lol
@@Yournamehere9160 knew a dude who flew down to South America to get laid
Classic.
Absolute bell ends.
They must know everything relies on oil, and without it we would eventually end up killing each other for the last tin of beans, especially in the UK.
Stop giving them airtime… it’s what they want!
Disgusting.
Sell the painting, hippy's included
Extinction rebellion gave us 8 years about 6 years ago, so chill man and wait for the horses all problems gone then
What a pompous speech, protesting quietly and stoically is far more effective, the gallery should have cleared the room of all visitors and press to stop them getting attention.
Yet nothing has changed protesting "quietly and stoically"
I love it how people defend police and state violence and cruel heartless deadly treatment of the poor and disabled but get offended when protesters do direct action and can't avoid minor property damage. The civil rights movement wasn't a hundred percent peaceful. Nor was Nelson Mandela. Or the revolutions in eastern Europe when the Soviet Union collapsed. When we tell social movements that they must always protest peacefully we tell them that we hold them to unrealistic standards we don't hold the people and institutions in power to. This purity demand is futile and harmful.
Leave them there overnight.
I hope they used eco friendly super glue.
What a complete load of hogwash.
An excellent speech, still couldn't give a toss
Yes the planet is doomed get over it
You'll give a toss if you plan of living for more than 20 more years. What makes you think you'll get priority over dwindling food and water supplies because of the increasing frequency of droughts?
Let me guess, you will be dead before you're significantly inconvenienced by global warming? What about younger people? couldn't give a toss about the future of humanity?
What chemicals are in glue?
Most glues and adhesives contain some of our nastier recipes: solvents such as benzene, toluene, xylene, styrene, acetone, methanol, phenol, alkylphenol and dichloromethane. are these chemicals helping the planet.
I hope they're still there.
The more these people protest like this, the less inclined we are to listen.
If they glued themselves to an Oil Stain on your driveway that would work better
Leave them ,it could get a bit messy at toilet time
"Just stop living" please
And the police simply ripped their skins off their hands!! 😁😁
Jail them and make them pay for the damages done
It's an oil painting. What's your problem?
such selfish people , thanks evening standard for promoting these selfish people you should be name and shaming them not publishing their hatred. you should be proud
You are selfish
Surly this is criminal damage, they are not getting any support from me and a lot of others agree with me. They are not doing themselves any favours.
A music student and a psychology student............ Hmmm......both have been told they are special and entitled. "Do your respective degrees darlings, normal people who go to work everyday will pay your benefits when your unemployable or better still stay in academia for your whole life.
So next all paintings will be behind Perspex screens 👏 well done! Hope they fine them for damages and if they can’t afford it send them to jail! Nice T-shirts… would that be oil based paint on your Chinese T-shirts, plastic beads on her neck and rubber shoes made on the other side of the planet? Gotta love the irony that’s lost on them!
I wonder how they got to the gallery?? On transport that uses oil to function ??
Bunch of hypocrites
The glue they are using is called a Cyanoacrylate and is derived from Cyanoacrylic acid and methanol.
*Methanol is made from natural gas or fossil fuels.*
🙄
Protesting in clothes made from oil.. Very intelligent
I don't see how sticking yourself to oil paintings helps you solve dependance on oil. Ultimately by protesting using art he proves how important art is and why even in warzones art MUST be protected. However there are almost certainly better ways to fight the reliance on oil.
what do you propose he do instead to be heard?
@@dopeydiablo literally anything! The only reason we heard him is because of the video. A very samll amount of people go to a damn art gallery so having a protest there is pointless besides to destroy art. If he wants to stick himself to something, he could stick his hand to a peptrol pumpor block traffic. That i respect at least because blocking traffic takes more balls than defacing a pricelesss piece of art that has been put on exhibition for everyone to see.
@@dopeydiablo How about something productive, something beneficial? 🤷🏾♀️
Too often, activists assume "all attention is good". Too often, they "succeed" primarily in pissing people off, instead of getting people interested in the problem of climate change, and what we can do about it.
When I was a kid, I was living in an impoverished country that was trying to recover after a natural disaster; and I'll never forget the compassion and help we were given by Christian groups. They never told us "You should be Christian!" They just came and helped us, they did positive and productive things, and as a result, many people became interested in Christianity.
Glueing oneself to a painting, or sitting in the middle of a highway, that's relatively easy and it DOES accrue attention. . . but it DOESN'T accrue empathy or interest in the cause.
That’s so pathetic. We need oil lmao
Nigeria tried direct protests against the oil companies... that didn't work, so now humans have to try this... Why?
Need to lock them up for like 6 months every time they do it
Nah, give them the bill and have it taken directly from their salary at the source until its' paid. If they get dole/benefits, take it from that instead.
Someone give this pair a bloody good Hiden!
I was just there a couple days ago 😱
Why not just cover every single piece of art with acrylic?
They have to be viewed as potential arsonist not to mention a danger to home owners and business insurance, banks and other institutions.
I wish I had the time off and money to do this.
Attention seekers, insulting common sense and others views. They complain but have no answers.
Leave them glued to the painting……lmao
I was really hoping when they went to grab hands they glued themselves too far apart.
I also wondered if they were wearing diapers?
Please talk about Ecosia they are a search engine that plants trees
Bravo
What i don't get is that they're protesting centuries old art. Before environmentalism was even a thing
The thing is, he's making a good point, but in such a self-important and irritating way that I totally understand why the vast majority of people get a really strong urge to punch people like this. Protestors do good causes way more harm than good.
No he’s not making a good point at all
These hypocrites will spend their summer holidays travelling the globe, start to put these activists on no fly lists, and let's see if they continue.
🍂🌺🌷🌺🌷🌺🌺🌷🌷
Lots of arguments going on here regarding this "protest" and the fuel price "protests" recently committed on some motorways and roads.
I have a rather old fashioned view on the subject which is while I sympathise with the aims of these "protests" I disagree with the method used.
Causing people severe inconvenience such as missing flights, or hospital appointments because they couldn't get the in time will not reduce the price of fuel. Damaging an irreplaceable piece of art will not take us one step closer to protecting the environment.
Criminal damage and deliberately obstructing the highway are criminal acts and will do no good for their causes.
I agree. To be fair they look like they're making an effort to not damage the actual painting (although I don't know where that double sided tape was placed).
I know people keep saying this, but then in the end, what other options are there. People keep going against actions like these when it is an inconvenience to themselves. What the fact is, unfortunately, we have to accept the fact that we are going to have to be uncomfortable. It is necessary over the other alternative. We have to do this, because every time people try to act and get people to notice, those people who attack people for trying to raise the issue don’t come up with any solutions themselves. As soon as those people would also do the same, They too would also be attacked. It’s an endless cycle. This unfortunately means that we will have to do things which people are uncomfortable with when it impacts their way of life, whether they like it or not. I do feel for people who have the journey is disrupted, but in the end, it is necessary over the eventual alternatives down the road, which is getting ever shorter now.
@@danielwhyatt3278 There are other options and this is where protestors egos may be causing harm to the climate movement because their interviews more often than not strongly suggests that they are the only ones doing anything about the climate crisis. Which leads audiences to think, 'wow if that's all that's being done then we're doomed.'
They are a drop in the ocean when it comes to climate action. They neglect to give credit to the general public (most of whom favour climate recovery and are adopting greener lifestyles), businesses and organisations who are increasingly pro green business models and innovations, long-standing NGOs, charities and volunteer groups who are very knowledgeable and familiar with all key players, media for beginning to address the issue regularly and seriously, legal teams who are fighting in the courts, other protest groups who follow the correct protocol of organised peaceful protest, even politicians who lobby for climate recovery and adaptation.
There are other choices and people are choosing them.
These protestors setting a narrative that it's their way or no way is very foolish and slows the movement down.
However, they are correct that the UK government is not doing enough to meet emissions targets in time or generally taking environmental issues seriously enough in 2022 and that is beyond scary. They are stuck on their political wheel and need to think bigger than themselves and right now they don't seem capable of that.
Jail
This kids are the reason I don’t give a damn anymore
The irony is that the glue they are using comes from oil based chemicals.
…and their clothing, utilities. The vehicles they used to get there. Bunch of hypocrites.
Yeah, that's the most original gotcha! ever. The ultimate argument to win the fossil fuel debate. /s
BTW: the less fossil fuels we burn the more we can use for making petrochemicals until we can replace them with green chemistry alternatives.
That printed paper. . It's a petroleum product.
Just turn the lights off and leave them there
Why don't they get a job
They're both so wealthy they don't need to work, they can accumulate an absolutely enormous carbon footprint by flying all over the world -- to beautiful and exotic locations -- under the guise of allegedly caring about climate change. 🙄
How dare they
She and the rest of them are absolute hypocrites. There are photos on her social media which show her on “travelling” trips to places like Bali. I can’t stand people like them. Do as I say not as I do.
The point is to not increase the amount of fossil fuels being used not to stop using them altogether without an alternative in place. Your hypocrisy burning is idiotic.
"You don't want half the planet to be uninhabitable in 20 to 30 years? Yet you use fossil fuels to travel? Gotcha hypocrite!"
What do you think happens when it's to hot to grow crops? You get famine.
We are already seeing increasing frequency of droughts and it's only getting worse. Food companies are already struggling. Just the other day the company making saracha sauce complained about the lack of peppers they can grow because of climate change.
Madagascar is going through an incredible famine right now because of the climate crisis.
@@memebump7612 How is it idiotic calling them out. She has more air miles then I have lol. Plus I’m not the one glueing myself to paintings. Painting that have natural oils.
You talk about Madagascar, an island in the last 100 years 90% of its rainforests have deforested for farmland. This “famine” crisis could of been avoided if there was controlled deforestation. You do realise when you cut down a rain forest you get drought don’t you. Why don’t you protest that.
@@stevej1818 It's idiotic because there's no real alternative to travel across the world without using fossil fuels. Just because they take part in society doesn't mean they cant care or criticise the problems with it.
Even if every individual decreased their carbon footprint it would hardly do anything. You do know that just 100 companies are responsible for like 70% of the worlds carbon emissions, right? This isn't a problem that can be fixed on an individual level. People tried talking to their representative politicians and nothing changed. Now they're getting desperate because politicians clearly aren't interested in helping if it affects the disgusting large profits of the fossil fuel companies.
Since the scientists are saying based on our current trends, the trajectory of where we are heading is a world where half the planet is uninhabitable within our lifetimes.
What do you think happens to our food supply when we're struggling to grow crops or farm animals and 3.5 billion people need to move into the habitable half of the planet. You know we're going to have wars over water, right?
People in Madagascar are dying of starvation due to a lack of food since they've been unable to reliably grow any because of the little rain and extra heat drying the crops out before they grow.
Madagascar has had repeated droughts back to back. Scientists linked them directly to the increase in temperatures from the climate crisis. It's causing people to stave and you don't call that a famine?
Why did you put famine in quotes? What's happening in Madagascar is the definition of a famine.
And I do care about people cutting down forest's. It's very odd of you to just assume I don't without even asking me about it.
@@memebump7612 do you actually acknowledge what a hypocrite is. She’s calling to stop oil production after travelling across the globe in the one of the most polluting ways. It’s like a vegan telling people to stop eating meat after they have just eaten a Big Mac. We need oil how do you think food is transported? Aid is transported? The list is endless. Also the uk produces 1% of the worlds emissions. If say we went to net zero today. It would make absolutely zero difference. China, Russia, Japan, the US and India produce 50% of the carbon emissions. Why don’t you lot protest over there where it would actually make an impact. Madagascar would not have drought if it hadn’t been deforested, that is fact. Where ever you see rainforest deforestation you see drought.
@@memebump7612 _"Just because they take part in society."_
Since when does "taking part in society" require myriad vacations to exotic locations? Privileged much? 🤦🏾♀️ She's accumulated more air miles -- and created a MUCH larger carbon footprint -- in the past few years, than I have in my entire life.
This kind of hypocrisy is really annoying. Especially now, when she could easily reach millions of people via the internet, without physically travelling to spectacular vacation spots under the guise of caring about climate change. She's the epitome of _"Rules for thee, not for me."_
For the past several years, all my friends and I have been doing what we can, in our own local areas, to mitigate our own carbon footprints. While she's jet-setting around the world and creating an ENORMOUS carbon footprint and pretending to care about our planet. 😞😡

Oil isn’t the problem. It’s a small planet that has about 3 billion people too many on it. Fix that, then you can all the oil you want! 🤣
Fun fact…we’re actually not even close to many if you compare us to the size of the earth.
Once the boosters kick in we should be ok.
The majority of these protestors are just youngsters being youngsters. Young people were, are and will always be incredibly idealistic yet very rigid and black and white in their views. One day they know all the answers, the next day theyre asking for the world to help them. They have interest in changing the world while not yet possessing the appropriate social skills, life experiences and empathetic emotions to truly be of much use unfortunately. Young people can be really annoying. Most grow out of it, but the cause is fair enough.
My advice to them based on this video would be, get to the point. What do you want? Who is this message directed at? How do you suggest they change? Why do we need to see it and be involved?
Don't start speeches about causes with *I want* or *I don't want*. No one cares and it's not about you.
Set your terms, stay on topic, get to the point, don't dramatise a real crisis.
“Youngsters being youngsters”
I don’t know what you did but at the age off 23 (that’s classed as an adult in my opinion) which is what she is, I had finished uni and was working. They’re a bunch of hypocrites. She has photos of her on trips to Bali published in the papers. All those air miles…also how do they get to the areas they protest at? What are the clothes they’re wearing coming from, the utilities they have. The list is endless.
@@stevej1818 I would class 23 as a young adult. I think that's fair. I don't know anything about these people's personal habits or lifestyle choices. I don't really go there when it comes to environmental discussion. We live in an age where we all cause damage to the planet just by being part of the collective. Passing blame back and forth hasn't gotten us anywhere in decades and it's a good way to abruptly end much needed dialogue.
To be fair to these protestors though, they're not blaming the public or even business. They're calling for the government to act which is what is needed. This message gets swallowed up by their antics which is my point.
Valid protest. Not very mature approach.
@@stevej1818 Ikr, she's done more air travel for (allegedly) "activism" than I have flown in _MY ENTIRE LIFE_ (and more than most people in the UK have flown!) and her social media is rife with photos of her enjoying all sorts of exotic vacations under the guise of protesting against the waste that exacerbates climate change.

They're both incredibly rich, and the woman has accrued more air miles over the past few years, than most people accrue over our entire LIVES.
