Purchased this Marantz amp this week from richer sounds Stockport (uk) with monitor audio bronze speakers. Also demo’ed rhe denon 2800 amp and some Dali and Wharfedale speakers. I thought the sound of the Marantz and MA bronze speakers was the standout performance. I would also like to thank this review for me considering the Marantz rather than just going for a Denon amp. Really great video review
The audiophile snobs are finally acknowledging that the Cinema 70 and Stereo 70 are not toys. The slim Marantz units have a place in small rooms and small home theater setups. I love my Cinema 70S. My only regret is not waiting for the Stereo 70, which is all I need. If Marantz set the Stereo 70 at $999, they you have a hit on their hands. A Hi-Fi amplifier that can handle multiple HDMI inputs and pull people away from the limited soundbar solution.
I find both intriguing (70s and Stereo). However, my only dislike is what visually sets Marantz apart - the circular read out. It is just too small. In turn, the NR 1711 (?) has the read out I prefer. I am guessing I'll still be later shopping for the 70s as I would like a 3.0 or 3.1 set up for movie watching in a small space. As for music, you are spot on with the stereo 70.
Hearing Awia again brings back memories. I had a 3pc one back in the day. I ended up reverting back to my Dad's old stereo. Probably from 70s or 80s, I got have it in my room around 1990 with bookshelf speakers. Added a dual tape deck. In 2002ish I finally started my surround sound days & kept upgrading from then on.
I also had an Aiwa Walkman, stereo midi system and also a minidisc player. They are now bringing back Aiwa back in the U.K.- they have a portable cd player for sale! I’m tempted
I picked up a 70s a few months ago now and it's been great. My speakers aren't super demanding so currently driving them off the Marantz, but I'll probably go with a fairly affordable Emotiva BasX 3 channel amp that can power the fronts, and the receiver can keep driving the surrounds etc. I like the unit a lot. Thankfully got it for way less in Europe than 1200, and the pre-outs were a deciding factor. I agree that the US MSRP is excessive. $899 would indeed be much better.
I've been using a 2017 Marantz NR1608 with a Emotiva BasX A-300 for my front floor speakers, and using the build in amp for surround speakers. I've been loving that setup, but my NR1608 has sadly died prematurely. Still... because of space, the Marantz slim receivers are my only option.
I have been mucking around with home theater since about the mid 90's. I even had laser discs. And frankly I think anything more than 5 surrounds plus subs is simply overkill, unless you have a large dedicated theater room. I doubt that is many people, quite frankly and the ones that do have that are not looking at the Cinema 70. I have been using my old Denon 2805 from 2005 quite happily, but this was pre HDMI days so needless to say it is a bit long in tooth at this point. But it also sports a fullset of pre-outs Streamng? I use an OPPO blue ray or a cheapo media player for that. So I have been getting along fine. But it's time to get with the modern world now. I am now relegated to a smaller room so extra speakers are not needed for surround effects. But I do wish to give Atmos a try. And for me I am sure 2 Atmos speakers will be sufficient to get an effect. I plan to use a Cambridge AX 35 for the fronts. It has 35 watts and a lovely expansive sound. That should take some of the load off the Marantz. I may experiment and try both to see which I prefer. Basically I want this for the pre-outs and the sound quality, particularly for music. Yea the price is a bit of a shocker. They are offering a receiver trade in discount so that might make the decision a tiny bit less painful, but quality costs money, and I think in this case it will be worth it. Yes it is close to RZ 50 money but I think that would be overkill for me. And even for most people. Frankly with sound bars being as good as they are these days, most people don't even need to bother with AVR's anymore. I imagine the choices in receivers will be slimmer as time goes on, as sound bars make more sense for most people that aren't audiophiles. And 9.2 and 11.2 sytems are just not needed, for anything other than acoustically treated, 20 seat, big projection screen theaters.
Totally agree with your rant. HOWEVER, what is baffling me is why are these brands now coming out with an affordable AV Processor we can connect to Power Amps? Dont get it. When i was younger, we had loads of processor options from cheep but quality bands. Now AV processors are a fortune!
Bought the 70s because of the pre-outs and I don't need more channels than it supports. On top of that the 4k@120 hdmi connections will be great for gaming. It fits nicely in a venn diagram of what I was looking for to replace my current pre-amp. For the same money I could have gotten better audio out of another pre-amp, but then the gaming experience would have taken a hit.
@rlwings Best investment i have made in years. Picture quality much improved to my old Sony. Sound, even with tv millimetres from the wall, sounds more authoritative while speech is more crisp and transparent. With the Marantz and Squad towers, watching tele is like having my very own cinema. As you can tell, I am very happy with the setup. 👍
Thanks for sharing your perspectives and this review with us all. I am considering getting this unit, and the preouts are a key reason for my choice. I would have also liked to have dedicated stereo XLR inputs for music. External power amps are, as you said, key to any multichannel system. Your time is greatly appreciated
Not trying to be lazy here but how much better is this than say the Marantz NR1711 or one of the Marantz older AVRs that still can be bought new? I do think this is very appealing but...
My father has been the proud owner of a Panasonic home theater system for over a decade. This system, featuring a Dolby DSP preamp, has been faithfully outputting to multiple power amplifiers all these years. However, we've recently encountered an issue: the Dolby DSP has ceased functioning. I'm contemplating a switch to a 70s model, which is appealing due to its comprehensive channel pre-out capability. This feature is crucial as it allows us to retain our existing power amplifiers while transitioning to a newer DTS system. Additionally, I've noted your recommendation that the 70s model excels in music playback, particularly in Stereo mode. Given its performance and quality, it seems like an ideal upgrade for my father's audio setup.
Price is high due to lack of power, it checks all boxes for processing so adding a 7 channel amp is needed for average size room. Full set of pre out is excellent and the reason to buy this. Last NR series was $800 and that is the right price
I have the Cinema 70s with the stereo pre outs into a Camebridge audio CXA81 intergrated amp in a 7.1 setup. I'm more than happy. I only use the CXA81 for music as a stand alone amp.
I can tell you are still in love with your IOTAVX 17 😊 I know you had to build up the Marantz because of the review 😉 At the end of the day something tells me that the IOTAVX will be staying for now 👍 I've been looking at the other 2 options like the Emotiva MC1 or the Tonewinner 🤷 Or maybe the Onkyo RZ50 😮 What would you say??
@@elmerbais So the Sony would sound way better than my RZ820? Or the RZ50? These new Sony's finally look like home theater equipment 👍 I'm just wondering if the $700 more for the Sony is worth it over the other options I've been looking at. Believe me I don't doubt your input. Just wanted to make sure I don't have to buy another receiver for a very long time. Considering the fact that Physical media is dying fast and it seems like Hollywood is not going above 4k, Atmos, DTSx and IMAX enhanced any time soon, probably never 🤷
On sale in Australia $1999 now $1700 AUD. You would want to power amp your front 3 LCR which are usually further away tower speakers / centre on its side 😅
I thought the exact same thing, this is a $900 box. I was very surprised at $1200 for an amp section that just gets by. 7.1 and 50wpc has been around a loooooooong time - dsp or not
Way late to the party, but I see this as the most affordable HDMI 2.1 pre/pro. I live in an apartment and try to keep my ht setup as low key (visually) as possible. I do agree 9.2 would have been perfect. But I can see trying 4.1.2.
Hello! I have some questions for you and I would very much like your help, 1 in movie audio quality music and games for you which is the best pre-amplified receiver, Onkyo, Denon, Marantz or Yamaha? 2 What amplifier do you use in your movie theater? 3 I'm a little undecided, I like Polk Audio Signanture and Klipsch reference premier, but I haven't had the opportunity to listen to them live, which would be better? Thank you and your video helped me a lot, you earned a subscriber!
Don’t think you can go wrong with any brand mentioned. Ultimately depends on your total budget and room size. You didn’t mention subwoofers, but I’d be sure to budget for one or two.
@@ecoustics You're right, I didn't mention subwoofers, my idea is to buy two, I just saw an Onkyo RZ50 receiver, it's a monster, compared to the Marantz Cinema 70 that I had mentioned, it's a big difference. In comparison of prices here in Mexico direct on Amazon it is higher by 4 thousand pesos, approximately 230 dollars, and all the channels are preamplified, so I am choosing the RZ50, in speakers if I go for Klipsch or Polk I will buy them for parts, I think it is a good option!
Great AVR/Amp combo Elon! Best of both worlds with separates. Surprised it has pre-outs, but yes it needs to be under $1k. I had an all-in-one 2ch unit when I was a punk teenager too, nostalgia it brought back when you showed your Aiwa.
Just ordered this for the bedroom (5.0). It is delivering tomorrow. Been using Marantz for 15 years, bit at full price I would not recommend this one. I got a really good deal on it so I grabbed it. Might order the 40 or 30 to replace my AV7705 next if I can get the same deal (after I spend time with the 70s). Will probably hook it up in my HT first to test against the 7705 since it has pre-outs.
I just picked up some 600m ii’s and I was thinking about the 70s myself. Will the 70s be enough to power those? I have a SVS PB12 NSD sub I was gifted to use as well to start.
Marantz has always been known for it's preouts. They've been doing it on all of their AVR's for years.... Historically this unit is not much different from most of Marantz's older AVR's . The 'Slim Line' series comes to mind. (But their more expensive AVR's did it too of course).
You seem like you know what you are talking about. I got two products the dm70, 2 of them and the 70s. What pre amp do you recommend? Oh and the center channel dm20. Also, my wife and I have been sound bar people our whole lives and we know next to nothing about receivers and speakers! lol
Yes. As on most modern receivers, the power on this receiver is shared among channels, so if you do use a stereo power amp for the main left and right channels, you will have more power/headroom for the rest of the channels. Most multi-channel receiver specs are only given with two channels driven. The power per channel drops as you use more channels.
I'd really like an upgrade from my NR-1506 AVR. Full pre-outs and HLG processing would be a step up, and even if the stereo processing on this unit is sketchy, like the 1506, it can be bypassed. I am leaning toward driving the L-R fronts with an external amp. The Cinema 70s may be worth the "additional $300" just for the flexibility it provides. Oh, and you had me at "You'd Prefer An Astronaut" ...
Just starting my home theater journey and got this as my first AVR. I was looking at TX-RZ50 first with all of its bells and whistles, but it was on the pricy side. I was able to secure Cinema 70s with around 700$ brand new so couldn't pass that value. I only use the pre-out mode and can't fit too many speakers to my room atm. Maybe years from now I'll upgrade but so far the marantz has done splendidly
Thanks ecoustics. Can anyone recommend another slim-line multipurpose AVR that does everything well for $1200.00? No? Okay, then the $1200.00 price is justified, at least until there is another slim AVR competition. (Yes, I am a Marantz loyalist)
i'm hunting for the 70s. for the moment it's about 880 $ in eastern europe, but out of stock in many shops :(( hope to catch it even lower any time soon.
From a detailed read through the manual, it does not look like there is any way to output the height channels on this receiver through preamp outputs. The preamp outputs appear to be limited to FR, FC, FL, SR, SL, RSR, RSL, ZONE2 and subwoofer x2. But this could be a limitation in the manual. I would expect that if you assign height channels instead of rear surround channels in the system set-up, then the rear surround pre outs will get the height channels (just like the speaker level outputs work). But there's no indication that you can reassign the ZONE2 outputs. If you're trying to get a 7.1.2 set-up using the zone2 outputs as heights, that won't work as the 70s is limited to processing seven channels total. You can do 5.1 plus zone2, 7.1 or 5.1.2. You can also do 7.1 or 5.1.2 with an unpowered (preamp level) stereo Zone 2 output. Hope that helps.
Great review! Hi, I'm planning to buy this Marantz and use it pre-out with rotel rb-1552 stereo power amplifier and a little later adding eversolo dmp a6 streamer going analog into Marantz! I was wondering if doing so, I can send an unaltered signal from the external streamer/dac - Marantz - Rotel power amp and get a better stereo sound ? • Is this a solution ? I can keep it for souround experience, but if I want or have a better external dac, then Marantz dac/amp sections are not standing in the way !? Please help and correct me if I'm rong here ! Thank you
Doesn't the Eversolo act as a pre-processor of sort? If so, then it would only have to be hooked up to your Rotel? As odd as it is, I was considering the Eversolo for streaming and also possibly the 70s AVR. However I cannot find any info on the DACs used by Marantz and how they stack up say to higher model Marantz or for that matter, teh Eversolo 6 or 6 ME or 8. Thoughts?
Hi Ealan. I'm planing to change my Samsung Q990B soundbar for a Cinema 70s + Focal Sib Evo Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 combo. I can get both brand new for 1260USD. My room is 4.5x3.6m. Do you think it would make a difference or not compared to soundbar? Thx
I think you’ll be surprised what a difference it will make. The Q990B is a beast, don’t get me wrong, but yeah - for $1,260 that’s a steal that’s worth it, especially after you get things dialed in with Audyssey room calibration. 👏
I started doing external amplifier with the fronts and now I can't stop. They should release one without amplifier and all XLR preouts. These get old so fast with all the new codecs, formats and connections it would be great to swap them easier and cheaper.
Thanks a lot for the video. Very informative. But is there a possibility to connect a device with DIRAC via the PeOut, and then measure the surround set via this way? I like this slim design very much. Don't like the monsters ;-)
i got the Cinema 60 and for music it is OK, i use a power amp for front speakers, but i tested a D300 dac and its so much better then the marantz. so of u love music.
That means it supports two subwoofers in mono, but not stereo. So essentially each sub gets the same signal, which is generally fine for home theater since there is only one LFE track. Some of the newer AVRs have capability to connect up to 4 subwoofers independently, which can extract lower frequency sound from front (left/right) and rear (left/right).
@@pineomt each subwoofer receives the same signal. You can set crossover level for subwoofers, and overall gain (volume) but not eq. However there is an eq option for higher frequencies.
Hey again Ealan. You recently replied to one of my comments from a previous video or yours (ruclips.net/video/4WktuUCFnUo/видео.html&lc=Ugz-czR_q5K_enP8eZp4AaABAg.9tI_JyJd_789tLNzR4jgYS) and I just wanted to update you and mention that I just purchased this Marantz AVR. Thoughts based upon our previous conversation?
The biggest difference is the removal of legacy component video inputs on the 1711, replaced with a full set of pre outs to power all 7 speakers with external amps with the 70s, if desired. The 1711 only has the ability to have front left and right speakers powered with external amps.
i must say it is already down to 700 euros here in the netherlands, and for that money you do not get the same slim line featured set. also i do not use pre amp out, but for normal listening the 50 watt is more than enough. i had an onkyo 140 watt per channel, but this thing goes toe a minimum of 50 watt before even thinking of clipping. it is in my opinion not that bad of an amp.

As on most modern receivers, the power on this receiver is shared among channels, so if you do use a stereo power amp for the main left and right channels, you will have more power/headroom for the rest of the channels. Most multi-channel receiver specs are only given with two channels driven. The power per channel drops as you use more channels.
Agree. Above $899.00 is beyond my budget.
Nicely Done.
Any info. if this Cinema 70s has fans for the HDMI boards ?
Thanks
I'd really like an upgrade from my NR-1506 AVR. Full pre-outs and HLG processing would be a step up, and even if the stereo processing on this unit is sketchy, like the 1506, it can be bypassed. I am leaning toward driving the L-R fronts with an external amp. The Cinema 70s may be worth the "additional $300" just for the flexibility it provides.
Oh, and you had me at "You'd Prefer An Astronaut" ...
“She thinks she missed the train to Mars…” 😁🤘
Just starting my home theater journey and got this as my first AVR. I was looking at TX-RZ50 first with all of its bells and whistles, but it was on the pricy side.
I was able to secure Cinema 70s with around 700$ brand new so couldn't pass that value. I only use the pre-out mode and can't fit too many speakers to my room atm. Maybe years from now I'll upgrade but so far the marantz has done splendidly
Glad to hear you’re enjoying it!
Can you share where you got this great deal ?
Marantz slim doesnt have HDAM modules vs 60/50/40 series, you think HDAM are not worth to pay in comaprision 60 vs 70s?
This review is pointless if you didn't test built in amp(only connected to power amp) Because most people are gonna use it, to power their speakers...
It is the ideal size to be used on my surround audio PC
Thanks ecoustics.
Can anyone recommend another slim-line multipurpose AVR that does everything well for $1200.00? No? Okay, then the $1200.00 price is justified, at least until there is another slim AVR competition. (Yes, I am a Marantz loyalist)
Good point! 👍
From the comments it seems that the prices they’re reporting are for the 70 not the 70s.
i'm hunting for the 70s. for the moment it's about 880 $ in eastern europe, but out of stock in many shops :(( hope to catch it even lower any time soon.
It’s already around U$ 700 if converted from € here in Europe and t4 now nearly a bargain looking at the mentioned features.
By chance do you know if the zone 2 preouts can be assigned as height channels for Atmos?
Thoughts?
Good call out on that price. I looked hard at it but choked on the a$k.
Not sure I understand your question.
@@ecoustics Forget my question. I was thinking too complicated ... ;-)
675€ here in europe... gonna buy it!
Currently Cinema 70 in south Europe is 820 usd
What amp is that?
Never heard of this channel.
Ealan can help.
Welcome!
Hmm in Europe we have them for around $890 and thats including VAT.
i got the Cinema 60 and for music it is OK, i use a power amp for front speakers, but i tested a D300 dac and its so much better then the marantz. so of u love music.
It's £679 currently on Amazon UK😀
How can I use this with ps5 with no optical on the ps5
HDMI…..
pair it with an Emotiva 7 channel amp and call it a day
Really pure direct? And skip the room corrections of Audyssey???
I mean, the Marantz NR1711 exists at $800 and there's no way Marantz is going to cannibalize that model for this one.
@Shadepariah
Marantz NR1711 only has 2 preouts the Marantz Cinema 70 has 7 preouts so it is definitely an upgrade
😢GAME input of 1711 is not 2.1😢
On amazone currently 759 euro!
Cds are better my 16 yr old couldn't believe the difference.what do think of the emotiva pre amp,I have a monolith 7.2 amp
This is a 7.2 unit, yeah? Why does he say at 8:40 that it does not support “independent subwoofers”?
That means it supports two subwoofers in mono, but not stereo. So essentially each sub gets the same signal, which is generally fine for home theater since there is only one LFE track.
Some of the newer AVRs have capability to connect up to 4 subwoofers independently, which can extract lower frequency sound from front (left/right) and rear (left/right).
@@ecoustics is the unit capable of EQing each sub independently?
@@pineomt each subwoofer receives the same signal. You can set crossover level for subwoofers, and overall gain (volume) but not eq. However there is an eq option for higher frequencies.
@@ecoustics checks almost every box…bummer.
You can use a miniDSP (2x4 for example) at the outputs to measure everything in and set the correct phase & time alignment for the subwoofers
👍
Apesar de ser iguales, yo creo que esta mejor el nr1711. Y mas barato que el cinema 70s.
I dont see any different between my nr1711
The biggest difference is the removal of legacy component video inputs on the 1711, replaced with a full set of pre outs to power all 7 speakers with external amps with the 70s, if desired. The 1711 only has the ability to have front left and right speakers powered with external amps.
@@ecoustics i see,i dont need external amps so i am good,thanks for info😁✌️
Yabba yabba yabba ...😖
Ure voice makes it hard to watch.. could u like not asmr the mic and reduce like half the air u exhale when you talk?
i must say it is already down to 700 euros here in the netherlands, and for that money you do not get the same slim line featured set. also i do not use pre amp out, but for normal listening the 50 watt is more than enough. i had an onkyo 140 watt per channel, but this thing goes toe a minimum of 50 watt before even thinking of clipping. it is in my opinion not that bad of an amp.
Hola! Tengo um 5.1.2 con altavoces Klipsch R-51m q da 85w continuo y 340w de pico con un subwoofer Klipsch R-100SW. Es el comedor, no sala dedicada.
¿Me voy a quedar corto con el cinema70? Mejor ir a por el 60? Gracias!
Price is high due to lack of power, it checks all boxes for processing so adding a 7 channel amp is needed for average size room. Full set of pre out is excellent and the reason to buy this.
Last NR series was $800 and that is the right price
