      It's not a comparison? It's a statement. The starlet turbos even the older version was heavy and slow. The newer shape is even heavier again. They added a turbo because without one they'd hardly move. A old friend of mine had the older shape.....he improved injectors, fuel pump, aftermarket headers ( factory ones are really really bad for cracking his had 3) upped the boost to 20lb on a brand new turbo and ecu and I could still beat him in my 4age corolla with 4 ppl in it. Slow asf!

    • @brotangyoust9252
      @brotangyoust9252 5 лет назад

      Just had a quick Google and they are just under a ton! For a car that size that's pretty heavy. The older ones from the 80s are around 200 kg lighter! Same size car essentially.

  • @Danger_mouse
    @Danger_mouse 7 лет назад +14

    Hi, nice video.
    I wanted to point out a small point on the March Super Turbo regarding the engine capacity.
    It wasn't reduced for cylinder strength (although that was a good by-product) it was reduced so that when the FIA x 1.7 multiplication factor for supercharging was applied, the engine fell into the 1300-1600cc class, and not the larger 1600-2000cc class as it would if it retained the larger capacity
    👍

    • @VisioRacer
      @VisioRacer  7 лет назад +3

      Oh, okay, so higher block durability was only a bonus.

    • @Danger_mouse
      @Danger_mouse 7 лет назад +3

      VisioRacer
      Correct.
      The 987cc MA10S engine multiplied by the FIA formula of 1.7 equals 1672cc putting it in a class with cars up to 2lt.
      By using a smaller bore, the 930cc MA09ERT engine ends up at 1581cc and inside the 1600cc class limit where I believe it did very well, certainly as a rally car.
      Daihatsu failed to take this chance to decrease the engine capacity of their 993cc engine once turbo charged and so ended up in the larger class. 👍

      I had one as my second car ever - just going for max performance per pound. Daihatsu spent all the money on the engine. I parked it with one back wheel on a kerb and it put enough twist in the chassis that I couldn't shut the tailgate until i moved it. For smiles without grief it's the most fun car I've ever owned. Traded it for a CRX VTEC coupe 2 plus 2 that was quicker, handled better but not quite so much fun and traded that for a MK1 Elise that put bigger smiles on my face than any car but which has been the cause of more grief too.

      My dad had it's predecessor - the one which looked like smaller Lancia Delta of the time back in like 1996. Needless to say the one in this video was a huge leap for the car from being a clunky box to a smooth machine which makes you feel you're in a car and not a box of metal.

    • @Marine475
      @Marine475 7 лет назад +1

      All those Group A homologation specials could put even better numbers but often only on paper. Impreza Turbo, Lancer Evo, Escort Cosworth, 323 GTR had engines that could do 700 hp and everything else put together from asorted bits and pieces of other cars so they would just pass homologation. As a result I don't think any of thos cars was really any good or reliable from factory. GTI-R would overheat, 323 had 1,8 engine that could make 700 hp on stock turbo (talking about downsizing lol) but gearbox couldn't handle more than 150, Escort was... shortened Sierra chassis with Cosworth engine and ECU map so bad the first thing anyone would do is take it for remap. Underneath all that garbage however all those were purebred rallycars and with enough knowledge and funds any of them can be very fast even today.

    • @driftjunk
      @driftjunk 7 лет назад

      I'm pretty sure the 323 gtr could not make 700 on stock turbo, I drove one with the stock turbo that had the boost turned up as high as it could safely go, it was more like 300hp. If the turbo was big enough to make 700hp the car would be extremely laggy. I've never seen any of those cars you listed make anywhere near 700hp (I drove all of them) without changing almost everything in the engine including, turbo, pistons, rods, injectors, ecu, head gasket etc...

    i've always wanted to import a Pulsar GTI-R

    • @quinnjohn1
      @quinnjohn1 7 лет назад +1

      rtv190 If you ever get round to it, import a few extra transmissions as well, the box could barely cope with standard power! That and the clutch were the only real weak points. A company called Sadeev used to make a reinforced gearbox and uprated gear sets for them. It's still easy to get uprated replacement clutches, it is an sr20det engine after all. A friend of mine had one running about 350 bhp, he went through 3 gearboxes in a year before he coughed up for the sadeev box, after that it was bulletproof. It was a serious piece of kit, it was faster than most things on the road at the time (1999, back when 600bhp was a huge number for a Supra lol)

    • @k2vehlondon249
      @k2vehlondon249 7 лет назад

      quinnjohn1 Owned mine for 11 years and still no gearbox problem... saying that I've only had it on the road for about 6 months in the 11 years I've owned it... I do agree with the clutch, mine was changed soon as I purchased... 400bhp and still same gearbox.. touch wood

    • @quinnjohn1
      @quinnjohn1 7 лет назад +1

      Boss K-s From what I remember, it's the actual gearbox casing that can deform slightly under heavy load which in turn wrecks the gears. My friend, Pete who owned the one I mentioned, loved hard launches, he had launch control fitted and wasn't afraid to use it! 4500 rpm clutch dump launches in it were unbelievable! it took off like it was going to catch up with the horizon! That was probably why he went through gearboxes quite so quickly. It was one of the most exciting cars I've driven, I personally think it also handled better than the Subarus and evos at the time (1999) on the roads we used to drive on (look up the "Cairn O' Mount" road in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, that was our favourite stretch of road). I am more than a bit jealous of you having one, they are worth a fortune here now.

    • @k2vehlondon249
      @k2vehlondon249 7 лет назад

      quinnjohn1 No you're spot on about the gearbox I just couldn't help but get a little defensive haha.. It's sentimental you know.. No doubt it's probably the most fun I've ever had in any car.. naturally brings a grin to my face hearing that engine roar knowing it's all mechanical and not the stuff you see today all run by electronics. That's my pleasure from it. as for you being jealous. Really nothing to be jealous of mate if I ever drive it 90% of the time I'm fearing which corner it's gonna break down in. touch wood she's never let me down but it's a fear factor. how much are they in Scotland now ? mines a pretty clean example I'll see about copying a picture link here. 450bhp must of been an absolute monster.

    The Mazdas were known by other names outside of Japan and actually sold reasonably well. The MX3 was slightly restyled and sold as the Eunos 30X in most countries it was sold in, the V6 engine also made it into the top of the range early 90's 323 Astina.
    The late 80's 323 GTX was sold in Australia not as a Mazda but as a Ford (badge engineering was a big thing in the late 80's), called the Ford Laser TX3 it sold very well at the time and there was a subsequent body shape from 1990-1995 with a larger 1.8 litre turbo engine and 4WD.

    Love the Japanese hot hatches.
    3:50 A correction for the Nissan March Super Turbo, the capacity was reduced to get the car into the under 1600cc class for racing and rallying. When the FIA multiplication for a forced induction engine of 1.7 was added to the 903cc, it was classed as a 1535cc engine.
    If it had remained a 1lt as Daihatsu did with the Charade Turbo, then it would be in the 1600 to 2000cc class and uncompetitive. 👍
