I use a 12 sided dice, once the dice hits 1 they should make a camp. Also I don't use "encounters", I use a location generator instead. Encounters are just extra. Traveling the party sees a decorated forest with some wonderfully crafted items hanging from the trees. That's it no encounter, just some trees in a forest with decorations ... As for the who, what why I can custom craft stuff for the players to enjoy later, just that location exists between Village 1 and 2. Another randomly generated location: Plagued Ruins of Riches. So based off theme and setting this location will be interesting.
So you roll the d12? Or do you us it as a countdown device type thing? If you roll it, how frequently do you do it? If not, what determines the speed of progress?

@@TheGreatPunking I use the D12 just as a count down, I use 3D10 for the location generation.
