It's an impossible task. Even just a Premier League 11 is tough. The one player in my 11 I'm putting in on reputation alone is Edwards. He died 3 decades before I was born but every story I've heard about him makes him out to be someone who was amazing for someone so young who could have been the best of all time if he hadn't died in Munich. But if reputation isn't enough I'll swap him with Ferdinand. I'm leaving out some massive players there. No Scholes or Giggs. Rooney the top scorer isn't there and Eric Cantona, who's impact on United can't be understated isn't there. There are plenty of other names. Again, it's an impossible task. For me though, Charlton, Law, Best and Ronaldo are no-brainers. They all won the Ballon D'or while playing for United so they have to go in. I go back and forth between Schmeichel and Van Der Sar for keeper. I think Neville actually plays down his own career. He was a damn good right back and Irwin is the best full back, right or left, of the Premier League era (Ashley Cole is second). Stam is the best centre back I've seen in a United shirt. It's pretty telling that he's the one player Ferguson regrets selling. For the midfield, Charlton has to go in so then it's between Keane, Robson and Scholes for the other two positions. Scholes is the best English midfield player of his generation (the whole Gerrard v Lampard thing is nonsense, Scholes is above both) and Robson was the best of his whereas Keane may have been the best midfield player in the world at his peak (if you don't agree, it's not me you'll have to fight, it's him lol). It's a tough choice but I went with keane and Robson, primarily because Robson was great even in a poor team. Even looking at my choices, I'm still conflicted. Part of me thinks I should change to a 4-4-2, drop Robson and put Rooney up front with Law.
So you watched playing Best, Charlton, and Law? Not videos, I mean living the players in their days. If you did, I apologize. Because otherwise their selection is purely based on reputation and some videos. Not that they weren't great footballers (Balon D'ors!), but people putting players of the past, that never seen play, that never seen play the good games, the bad games, the high and lows, the charisma on the pitch, the movements without the ball(not seen in videos), and so on and on.. it never made sense to me, except showing football knowledge. In fact players always do their best of based on players they played with or against, not all time. But people do.

Limiting it to players I saw play on a weekly basis (even by that criteria it would be difficult) wouldn't be an "all time" list though, it would be a "my time" list. As to your point though, I get it. I don't like comparing players of different eras. Football changes. Training methods, rules about fouling, all that stuff changes. If someone asks if George Best could play today, I'd say look at what he was able to do on muddy pitches, getting hacked down by the opposition and going out drinking the night before a match. Just imagine what he could do today with better training and fitness regimes, carpet pitches and red card tackles actually being given as red cards.
