Emlyn Hughes has to be in there. Liverpool captain, England captain, multiple leagues and European cups and could play virtually any position. Shankly built his team around him and said he might be the best player in world football. Wasn't primarily used at LB in his Liverpool career but surely has to go in over Steve Nicol.
Not a chance Hughes was better player than Steve Nicol playing LB. Nicol was superb football player. Scored goals, had assists and the partnership with Barnes was unstoppable.
Get a grip! Stevie Nicol was a fantastic footballer and even playing full back managed to score a hat trick against Newcastle one day. Crazy Horse was too slow to play full back in a modern era.
Kevin Keegan transformed Liverpool from a good team into a great team. His achievements have faded away in the minds of many pundits over time, but I will always remember him as the greatest player to put on a Liverpool shirt.
@@Theoneandonlyadammurphyryan I always find it interesting that Emlyn Hughes is never mentioned in these discussions. I know why, and it's political in nature, be had all of the energy of Robertson up and down that left wing, and he was also excellent in defence and in midfield.

If Liverpool win some more trophies this year (either the CL/EPL or both) then Robertson would go into LB for me. Nicol and Kennedy are the more accomplished right now, but Robbo's a better all-round player imo.
How is Robertson a better all round player than Nicol ? Nicol played all across the back 4 and also played in midfield. He also scored 46 goals compared to Robertson's current 6
The one player ignored (even as honourable mention) is Emlyn Hughes. He could play left back centre half and midfield. I would put him in at left back as he could do everything Nicol and Robertson could do and more. Captain under Shankly and Paisley and first captain to lift the European cup for Liverpool.
@@leepatrick9432 I agree! I absolutely love Robbo, but Stevie Nicol is just ahead of him as our greatest ever LB! Maybe by the time Robbo retires he could surpass him, but right now, its Nicol
Personally I'd put Robbo in ahead of Nicol already, mainly because Robbo actually plays LB full time, whereas Nicol usually played right-back or right mid, then moved to CB later on. Kennedy/Staunton/Beglin/Burrows were our LBs whilst he was at the club. The argument really should be more Neal/Nicol ahead of Trent, not Robbo.
I agree with this team though Allison is knocking on the door. Every other position seems right. TAA to get into this team at such a young age is remarkable.
John Arne Riise, could hit a ball like a rocket. I'm not a Liverpool guy so I can't say he is their best ever LB, but he is the one who always comes to mind whenever I think of underrated left backs

@@tonyb9735 I absolutely agree and that's one of the reasons he definitely shouldn't be there. Trent had 2 amazing season for Liverpool but over the last 2, his standards have dropped quite a bit. Last season he was poor and since mid Jan, he's had 2 assists in over 120 crosses in PL. He's probably liverpools 6th or 7th best performer this season but carragher makes sure to very rarely criticise him. Liverpool have been phenomenal this season and Trent has still been good but in the all time 11 is embarrassing after 4 seasons
Nah, Gerrard. To be the greatest, you need adversity. Kenny played in the best squad in the world at that time the whole time he's a player at Liverpool. Gerrard had to carry scrubs, he had Dijimi Traore, Igor Biscan on his team and still solo carried them all the way to Champions League and FA Cup trophies. As someone who regularly went to Anfield and away matches throughout the 1990s, I don't have any problems with Carragher's line up. Steve Nicol was a midfield player who became a defender. He also played on the wing, right midfield and left midfield. He scored 46 goals including a hattrick against Newcastle.
Can’t argue with that side although I’m sure people have their own best ever Liverpool 11, the only thing I’d say is as a few others have done already… our greatest ever player is was and will be John Barnes …. Words won’t do him justice so I’ll leave it there ✌️👍
I agree with you. I was totally in love with John Barnes when I was a kid in the 80's. Barnes had everything. Class, speed, strength, great dribbler, great shot, great cross, great passes, could use both feet and was a good header of the ball.
Don't know who he would replace, but Luis Suarez HAS to be in there. His last season at Liverpool was the BEST performance I have EVER seen from ANY player in ANY team in the English top division.
In terms of overall quality, Suarez was the greatest player to ever play for Liverpool but wasn’t here long enough to be established as our greatest player of all time
@@Cartierian I believe in 2 years time, in terms of overall quality, Virgil Van Dijk will be the greatest to ever play for Liverpool. Last season without him we didn’t perform up to our expectations and this season with him we are still competing for all titles in the last month of the season.
But, longevity and overall contribution to Liverpool F.C have to come into it. Kenny D and Souey were in a team that won 3 European Cups in six years. No other English team has had that dominance, granted Pool also won it in 1977 (so four wins in 8 years).
Left back should have been Emlyn Hughes. Probably the best player of the Shankly era. Hard not to pick Phil Neal at RB but you have to have something to talk about, I guess. Nicol might more appropriately have been a RB candidate than LB as well.
You have to remember English clubs were banned for 5 years in Europe otherwise Liverpool would have won more. In one season they annihilated the second place team N. Forest 5 - 0, regarded as one of the greatest performances of all time. This team couldn't compete in Europe. Torres and Surez were great but Dalglish was one of the best players of all time.
come on Kenny is and always will be the greatest Liverpool player, and Graham was better than Gerrard. as they say show me the medals Kenny was voted the best post war British footballer, and with what he won with Celtic and as manager with Liverpool and Blackburn no one has won more
Yeah, Suarez in a Liverpool shirt was one of the most spectacular players I've ever watched. Imagine that Suarez playing under Klopp today. That would be amazing.
Meanwhile Owen is left out always even tho he won the Ballon d'Or. Betrayal aside, he was cutting defences like a warm knife in butter. They could not catch him. Him and Gerrard are the reason I support this club since I was 7 years old. Of course my dad was also a Liverpool fan due to King Kenny and Rush, so that helped :)
Allison is better than Clemence. Luis Suarez was also significantly better than Ian Rush. Rush needed goals laid on a plate for him whereas Suarez could create goals out of nothing, carry the entire attack etc. Players in the modern game are also lightyears ahead of those in the 1970s/80s when it comes to pace, conditioning, physicality etc.
Carragher seems to have it in for Robertson, idk why, when picking Liverpool/Utds combined 11 he picked Irwin over him too... Robertson can defend unlike TAA so I don't know what's gone on there.
Not a Liverpool fan but can't really see the obsession with Trent. Yeah good going forward but he can't defend. Maybe going forward midfield would be an option for him. I'd stick Mark Lawrenson or Tommy Smith ahead of him at right back. You could go 433 and stick Keegan up top with Dalglish and Rush and what about Jimmy Case, a terrific player.
You know you are historic when guys as great as Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Fernando Torres don't even get a mention, I think Fowler was a better striker than Rush, but Ian is linked with an overflow of success in England and Europe so it's ok if he gets the nod
Paisley over Shankly for me - assistant to both Shankly & Dalglish as well as Liverpools all time most successful managers & one of only three managers to win 3 European Cups / Champions Leagues - the only manager to win it 3 times in it's European Cup format - and won the first 2 League title's the only time Liverpool won 3 League titles in a row (something only something that has only happened 5 times in the history of English football). And I'd have Kennedy at Left Back - hard to disagree with his other picks.
To be fair apart from hansen gerard and dalglish, the rest of the starting 11 could be debated but id have to give credit to carra. This is a great selection. Honourable mentions to Fowler Keegan Ian st john Steve mcmahon Jan molby Emlyn hughes Phil thompson Peter Beardsley Steve mcmannamon And of course jamie carrager himself. Made a Liverpool all time 11 myself recently before even seeing this video with 8 of the same players included. The only differences being Neal for Trent, Robertson for Nicol and Mané for Barnes (who I completely forgot about!)
Carra say that there was no real world class left back to play for Liverpool but I would argue that Robbo at his best is up there. However a much overlooked left back that was part of the dynast was Alec Lindsey who successfully played for LiVerpool during Shankly's reign in the early 70's and was class, Agree that Souness should be captain but I think Mark Lawrenson deserves serious thought for a centre back spot. You have to have Kenny in the team, and although Suarez is probably the most skillfull centre forward I have seen play for the reds I would agree that Rushie's partnership with Dalglish was phenomenal and given his work rate he would have loved playing under Klopp.
@@youngbae5187 Alonso was the man who started every play and controlled the pace of the game. I am lucky enough to have seen every Liverpool player since '73 & I'm absolutely certain the midfield is as good as it gets when you talk about balance with Barnes on the left with Gerrard on the right & Souey sorting out the middle but I can't see a 4 man midfield it has to for me be a 4-3-3 especially as the defence is so imposing with the king in the hole linking the midfield to the front with Salah in a floating role across the line feeding the goal machine that is Rushie, the only change I would make would be Allison for Clem as in 1 on 1 there's no-one better also his distribution is second to none then in the hot-seat you can't look any further than

The one player ignored (even as honourable mention) is Emlyn Hughes. He could play left back centre half and midfield. Don't know who he would replace, but Luis Suarez HAS to be in there. His last season at Liverpool was the BEST performance I have EVER seen from ANY player in ANY team in the English top division.

Still didn’t play for long enough for the club. Others who spent a long time at the club and contributed more should be respected.
@@andrewbryce2707 The following can be found by googling ..........."Barnes' 79 caps (11 goals) made him England's record capped black player for a time. Compared to his club form, he was never seen as a player who peaked wearing an England shirt."
So it's not MY opinion, it's a widely held opinion.
As for better English wingers, names which immediately spring to mind are Tom Finney and Stanley Mathews and UK wide you have Jimmy Johnstone, George Best, Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale.
I agree with most of his choices but I'd still go with Neal at right back and probably Emlyn Hughes at left back.
