  • From a folk song to the global Christmas hit, the Ukrainian carol “Shchedryk” soared to fame like a swallow. The melody of “Carol of the Bells”, which became an essential part of the Christmas season in the USA and worldwide, was first introduced to the North American audience 100 years ago. On the 5th of October 1922, the Ukrainian Republican Choir led by Oleksandr Koshyts performed the song at one of the main venues in North America - Carnegie Hall.
While almost everyone in the world can recognize the festive jingle of “Carol of the Bells”, very few know the background story of its musical foundation. Together with the Ukrainian Institute, Ukraїner presents the untold story of “Shchedryk”, its cultural mission, and its unique contribution to Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts in the 1920s.
100 years later, in the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Notes from Ukraine concert will take place to mark the anniversary of “Shchedryk”.

Every time you hear Carol Of The Bells - pls, recall that the autor of this song was murdered by the Russian marauder in his own house because that "Russian liberator" desired the boots worn by the author's father.
Nowadays "Russian liberators" also murder Ukrainians poets and composers at their own houses. Also for the boots.

I remember the first time I heard it long ago, when the girls from our law faculty came to our cathedra and sang live. It was so beautiful and mesmerizing that I felt I had to do a little research on it. That's when I found out that this song actually became known to the rest of the world as "Carrol of the Bells". But nothing compares to hearing it firsthand in the original language.

Missing piece: "The song is based on a traditional folk chant whose language was thought to have magical properties. The original traditional Ukrainian text used a device known as hemiola in the rhythm (alternating the accents within each measure from 3/4 to 6/8 and back again). The chant based on an ostinato four-note pattern within the range of a minor third is thought to be of prehistoric origins and was associated with the coming New Year which in Ukraine before the introduction of Christianity was originally celebrated in April." - Wikipedia

I didn't know this was Ukrainian until recently due to war reporting. How would I? How would anyone? That said, I wouldn't automatically assume it's American even though I only hear it sung in English. I don't believe "the rest of the world" does either. If I were to make any assumptions at all about carols, I would assume European given their long history. if I really cared about origins then I would look it up.

    Very interesting, and sadly tragic.
    "Sing, little bird!
    The spring you are
    Waiting for will come."
    - Henrique Coelho Neto.
May the God of the soon-coming Millennial Age, bring Ukraine unending peace, and flowering of its cultural gifts, when all Ukrainians will sing with joy, protected in the Light of the Son of God! No longer will they tremble in fear or mourn in sorrow, under the shadow of cold-Winter, cast by dark imperial Ruzzia!
