  • Sundews are typically propagated from seeds or leaf cuttings. When propagating vegetatively through leaf cuttings, most people recommend floating them in water until they root. I found that method to be useless as they tend to mold and rot before producing any roots. At least for me, I haven't had luck with that method.
What has worked for me is in regards to vegetative propagation of sundews is by placing leafs flat on to peat moss. The leaves remain moist from the moss and the plant doesn't have to acclimate from having rooted in water to rooting in growing media. An added plus is that they are less likely, at least from my experience, to start getting moldy but they also have a good strike rate with this method.
The sundew shown in the video is either Drosera capillaris, or Drosera rotundifolia. I had purchased them from a local grower who sells at the local farmer's market and it wasn't labeled.
I hope you enjoyed this video and found it informative and useful. Thanks for watching and Happy Planting.

I have went absolutely nuts propagating my ping. I started with one and now have like 20.lol it's crazy how they can grow off the leaf like a succulent. I have become addicted to propagating leaf cuttings so much that I find I'm waiting for my ping to grow enough extra leaves to take from. Weirdly the poor thing was somewhat struggling from the day I got it. Not growing anything at all. Then when I broke a couple leaves when repotting, I left them on the soil next to the plant and not only did the leaves grow babies, the mother started taking off growing new leaves left and right. Lol anyway. I think I will need give it a go with my sundews now. Lol thanks a lot. Haha. Thank you for sharing this. Pings, utricularia, drosersa, and sarracenia are the only carnivorous plants I do ok with as far as keeping them alive.lol I have given up on VFT, and any tropical pitchers. For now at least. I have killed too many this year.

What media do you grow your pinguiculas in? I haven’t had much luck keeping them alive. Have you tried growing the Venus fly traps and tropical pitchers in pure long fiber sphagnum moss? My tropical pitcher plant is growing in a bulb vase with a wicking set up and it is doing really well.

8:11 this might be the case with smaller sundews, but larger leaved sundews will commonly sprout multiple plants off of one leaf. I currently have a filiformis x tracyi that has so far sprouted 5 plants off of the same leaf

Hello, dear friend. I planted this plant with seeds and it germinated, but it has remained the same for several months and does not grow. Why?

The seedlings will remain small for a while. If you fertilize the leaves and give them plenty of light their growth rate should increase a little. Just make sure you fertilize them properly so as not to kill them.

@@Growing-Things- What fertilizer should I give? What do you mean by fertilizer? My plant is extremely small and cannot feed insects.

Thanks for the suggestion. It’s a good idea, but I used what I had available, rather than purchasing something else.
