Planting 2 Year Old Sarracenia Seedlings

My First Bonsai

The local garden center had a class on making bonsai so I decided to take it. This video showcases the one I made. (Unfortunately it died.) Repotting A Tropical Pitcher Plant With A Wicking Setup

In this video I repot a Nepenthes pitcher plant I purchased from the farmers market over the summer. They typically grow these in peat moss but that does not promote the overall longevity of the plant when grown at home. Consequently, long fiber sphagnum moss is a more suitable growing medium. if you live in a location with a temperate or sub tropical climate, you can leave them outdoors with no issue. Only thing you need to do is, water them a lot in their growing phase (always water in the tray) and only keep them moist in dormancy (protect from deep freezes below -5 celsius) with no water in the tray. Use rainwater only and for substrate only peat moss, sand, perlite

    you shouldn't grow edible plants in any random plastic containers. These containers are food grade plastics. That's why they are usually more expensive. The UV rays will break down regular plastics leeching chemicals into the water and soil which then get absorbed into your edible plants and can make you very sick.

    Hello! Very helpful video. I just bought one. I live in northern idaho. It’s pretty cold around here this time of year and very dry. I have a cool mist humidifier going most the time. All my other plants are doing great. So I just bought the blue spike moss yesterday. Brought it home from my store which is also pretty cold and dry. It came from a nursery/green house about a week ago. So today I noticed it looked and felt very wilted and sad 😢. I’m not sure what it could be just from bringing it home other than I have heaters on. So maybe it just didn’t have much moisture to begin with. So I gave it lots of water and put it under my grow light for the night. Any tips on how to help it and to help it live in this dry climate. I know you mentioned it needs mainly shade

    • @Growing-Things-
      @Growing-Things- 3 месяца назад

      They do like wet soil, but it doesn’t beed to be overly soggy. Warmer air holds more moisture than colder air so the heater may lead to a drop in relative humidity unless you add a moisture source which combined with the heater will allow for a warm and humid environment. They’re actually a cold hardy variety of selaginella so a heater may not be necessary. I have mine under grow lights. Shadier will bring out the iridescence though. What if you surround it by other plants? That would help humidify the environment around it.

  • @Peleski
    @Peleski 3 месяца назад

    I believe wet soil encourages fungal growth and rot, so it's a risk, though the plant grows quickly and may be OK. Water prop can be OK if you do it shortly after the roots are vis.

    • @Growing-Things-

      I purchased it off the internet and it has done really well in the terrarium. It’s been needing a major trim for months. I also placed cuttings in another terrarium (an open top one) and it’s doing well in it as well. Mine has not yet flowered yet though. Since it’s a smaller begonia, terrariums are an easy way to keep them alive with little maintenance. I hope this helps.

    • @Growing-Things-
      @Growing-Things- 5 месяцев назад

      To get them adjusted to soil, I would recommend placing loose soil into a pot, without patting it down. Then make a hole to insert the rooted cutting into and lightly pat down the hole. Make sure your soil isn’t anything that will compact when you water it and that should allow the plant to safely adjust to being planted into the soil.
