How To Care For Sundews. Growing sundew is very easy! Even though they seem like they would take complex care I find i use more effort keeping pothos alive than i do sundew. These carnivorous plants are very interesting and with this guide you can raise some too!

lol
Right??
not quite but you have a good spirit
Me too
He a little confused but he got the spirit 😂
I spontaneously bought a sundew and a venus fly trap pretty much exactly 1 year ago and been watering them with bottled water with low minerals the entire time, and they don’t seem to care! They all developed a pretty flower in spring and are constantly growing new leaves!
They are now my favourite plants especially the sundew. I forgot to water it a few times before and it looked horrible, but got back after a good watering the next days. It’s so easy to take care of!
Also, I threw some seeds it developed after flowering on the soil, just to see if it’ll grow, and I have over 10 baby sundew now! Absolutely love them!
nice im glad the bottled water is working out! I think some are more hardy than others but ive never tested it! Congrats on the seedlings! Arent sundews so cool! I love em too
They can usually take bottled water for a bit, but those minerals can build up in the soil over-time! I'd be wary of that. If you're able to collect rainwater, that's also another cheap alternative option.
I'm drowning in fungus gnats - I should add a few of these bad boys to my anti-pest arsenal.
heck yeah you should!
Buy a package of "Mosquito dunks" at the garden center. It is BT. Put one quarter of one in your watering can. This will kill the larvae in the soil and stop future generations. It is all natural and safe. But give it some time to work. Use sticky traps and manually kill the adults.
drain moths no bueno
Yeah I bought one for that exact reason too. I also started watering the infected plants with 4 parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide. That killed off all of the babies. It took a while but it’s the only thing that got rid of them!! Also sticky traps helped get rid of a lot of the adults.
@@TechplantChannel is there a variety of these guy's that are better at killing fungus gnats or are they good at getting them in general 🤔
you've very quickly become my favourite plant youtuber - you always present info in a clear and concise way. thanks for another great video mate
Wow, thank you!
🎶🎵Can I deliver us a river of Sundew~🎵🎶
🎶🎵 Careful if it’s carnivorous a little just won’t doo~🎵🎶
So clear and informative!! Thank youuuuu🌱✨
Good video. Sundews are great plants, the perfect beginner plants for newcomers to CPs. I too grow a number of them. As well as VFTs and Sarracenia, butterworts and Utricularia.
yup, I think they are way easier than the other CPs
Great video, many thanks!
I never heard of the drops or fishfood feeding before. Great tip !
I love the production and how quick your video gives information. Thank you very much.
ye
Great info! Beautiful plants!!
Thanks for watching
Thank you for the guide♥️ it helps a lot
You're welcome 😊
I just purchased two Sundew's and two Venus fly traps from ebay, I'm a noob so this is very helpful.
Good luck!
We were just talking about getting one or two of these to help with fungus gnats, too. This is a great guide, thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
Awesome Info 😮
Brilliant video
You have convinced me I need these in my home to tend to the flies my cats can't catch. I've been taking good care of an orchid for a while now, and it's doing okay so this shouldn't be beyond my ability.
as long as they get good light and distilled water they will thrive!
Watched a ton of these vids after (maybe) killing my previous attempts. Really this is the best most straightforward (and not repeated) info so far. Thank you.
Thanks! Good luck with your future sundews!
Thank you so much really helpful? love all your videos. I hope you doing well
Thank you very much! Im doing well and i hope you are too!
Sundews are so FRICKING PRETTY
They are like living crystals!
Great video, yeah the D.graomogolensis is also one of my favourite, its in my terrarium an doing quite well, also very red due to the light :) I also feed my sundews but mostly to generate some nice timelapse videos ;) I use fish food ,too, but they react to other stuff also... Many of my sundews are anyway outside and catch a lot of flies.
i wanna make mine a mini sandwhich lol
This is such a great video, no fluff or conjecture. I love your channel! Keep it up!
I also really dig your shirt. Do you sell anything with that design?
These grow wild here, I always wanted to grab some and grow at home. Gorgeous plant!
Nice I don't know if they are rare or u common or what your opinions are on taking wild plants but these are very simple to propagate from leaf cuttings. The leaf sprouts nee plants all along it so you can collect a few leaves and leave the plants
@@TechplantChannel literally millions around the lake at our camp, I personally would rather keep native plants if it is possible so I'm excited to try! Thanks!
Thank you for telling me
no problem!
Ty for teaching me
Thanks for watching
Very helpful 😁
My friend just gave me 3 carniverious plant babies for my birthday. We don't get much light here but we do have a south facing window I'm hoping will be enough. I'm going to look into some cheap lights just to add a bit more lighting for them.
That was an awsome video mr,could you pweease specify the light requirements for the sundews?,our first sundew died due to it getting absolutely cooked in the sun, this time we're getting two new ones and we want them to be grown specifically under artificial lights, can we use regular flourocent lights? Or something else?
What a great video!!!
I have a video suggestion, can u do a time lapse video on what it will look like on how potato tubers and garlic bulbs form & grow underground?
Also, grow some tropical exotic fruits for fun! It would be very cool. Thanks!
when i have more space i can try
I’m in Australia and I use tap water all the time for them, they grow very well and big and 4 sticks of flowers are blooming one by one in a pot now around end of summer.
absolute mad lad! nice! ive gotten lazy and used some on mine, makes me wonder if distilled water is all that important or not. Do you know your tap water parameters? my tap water is like liquid stone lol 30 degrees of hardness
Thanks very helpful! :D
Glad it helped!
I recently bought a Venus flytrap. I've been doing good with it so far. I think I'll try this plant. It shouldn't be too hard.
Nice, great video! Do you know if some species NEED a dormancy period? I've heard that temperate species like D. rotundifolia need a "winter" to stay healthy, but never looked into that much.
They do, but mine just go in and out of dormancy on their own. I think it's a lot more important for pitcher plants and fly traps
Thank you for your help with tips, I just could find a good video until you came along. 😄
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, great tip on the fish food. I’ve just brought mine home, didn’t have distilled or rain water yet, so put a few cm of filtered water in till I get tomorrow, I won’t have killed it will I?
hey thank you so much for your video it is very helpful, would you say the care for this is the same for pinguicula? im a begginer and have both
No idea, i killed my ping....
I've got a nice grow light from an aquarium that I think will work perfect for a sundew, it's a nice Fluval light that has red, blue, white wavelengths of light you can set manually and have it fade in and out daily to simulate sunset and sunrise. Lately I've been having a few gnats in my house and I can't pinpoint where they're coming from, I don't leave messes, I take my garbage out daily, the dishes are done as soon as they're made, and yet somehow I keep finding them. Since I have this extra light I figure it's time to try one of these guys, I'm really hoping they'll snag up those gnats while looking awesome at the same time!
I appreciate this video, it's confirmed and filled in the gaps on a lot of things for me. When I had a fish tank I had red red root floaters in my tank, and like you said lots of light was the key to making them nice and red and gorgeous. I know that's a different plant and I won't do this with the sundew but I found that especially dosing the tank with iron really helped keep them red and blossoming... anyways I have high hopes for my future venture into carnivorous plants, so thanks again for all the helpful information.
Your gnats are probably in your sink drain you can have fun with the plant or pour boiling water down the drain
Hey have you tried growing Sundews in a Lechuza self watering pot? You should do a video about it :)
I found some in the wild today Queensland Australia. I took a bucket of sand/soil that it was growing in, let's see if I can keep them growing
I have a worm farm and tones of fruit flies so I think this will be great
For food, I use MARPHYL at a 1/40 ratio using a small spray bottle to apply. The amount is so negligible that by the time it reaches the roots, it's inert. I use it twice a month.
i have a bad fungus gnat problem and in searching for solutions i looked into carnivorous plants and saw sundews, i definitely want to get a couple of these!
Capensis is probably the most hardy and prolific one!
Could I use a catwater thing to keep them constantly watered?
Honestly, would love one of these. Fell in love after seeing them on Encanto.
I am new to sundews and got mine about 3 weeks ago. So far they are growing but no dew yet. I have done everything you said in this video. Any tips?
hi there i like very much all your videos, i just starded to collect this plants , i wanted to ask do you sale any of your baby plants .?
I new to carnivorous plants. Just bought a couple of Venus Fly Traps on clearance at Lowe's. Now have my eye on eventually getting a sundew. You make them look fun and easy. If you were getting one for the first time, where would you look. I'm in Cincinnati. It was 4 degrees this morning!
Carnivorous plant facebook groups or your local houseplant groups. I'd just ask if anyone has some available
How did you set up your tub of sundews that you show at the end of this video?
Do you have a video on propagating them? Are they similar to other plants for propagation? Thx!!
not yet but they are super easy, just chop a leaf and leave it in distilled water
Beautiful sundew 😍. I have a Venus flytrap and I’ve kept it outside all summer long in a bowl of distilled water but I’m wondering if it’ll be ok in an east facing windowsill in the same dish of distilled water. Or do I need to move it to garage under led light for dormancy during winter???? I live in ND zone 4 so it gets extremely cold during winter time.
a lot of sundews will go dormant because of the light cycle so an led light will help a lot!
Hello! I am new to the channel. I am in desperate need of the elimination of all fruit fly/whatever other flies are cruising around my apartment. If only there were a Dateline on this (J/K). I got interested in carnivorous plants because I was looking for an effective, sustainable way to kill as many as possible and continue to do so. So, from reading comments below, it seems as if this is a common theme, and I think it would be a pretty dope project to build a specialized carnivorous household-bug elimination terrarium. Could you do a video on that? I am trying to find one, but I have not had luck. I am thinking sundews, but I'm sure there are other cool things that could serve a separate purpose. For other posters, I have tried many cleaning techniques and home-made traps and have done a lot of research to eradicate them, so I don't need any more advice on that part. Thanks!
Hey i just got my first sundew(adelae) i keep them in door and feed them some mosquito. But even i put them in water tray, they stop producing dews. Any solution? i newbie for planting these carnivorous plants.
Hi! Can I use groundwater to water them?
Just acquired two in the same pot so gonna need to split them, do you have any vids on doing this...
not yet, i should really make some
Thank you! I thought my sundew was dead for sure hahaha
I have some new sundews, and watched your video on how to care for them. Very helpful, thank you. Question though. I normally spray my car.plants with water a couple times a day to keep them hydrated. But I just purchased the maxsea and put little droplets of food on the leaves. How long should I wait before spraying them with water so that the fertilizer does not get into the spag? Basically, when is it safe to spray after fertilization.
hard to say, for the last like 6 months tho i literally just spray them with maxsea water and i havent seen any issues yet but maybe the minerals havent built up enough i dont know. Id wait until it dries up a bit? Im really not sure sorry
love your vid... what is your mix of perlite to sphagnum moss? 1:2? thanks.. bought some seeds to give it a go
maybe less maybe like 1:3 or 1:4 I don't use that much perlite
@@TechplantChannel Thank you
I didnt do anything to my sundew ^^ All I did was put it in a big jaw with distilled water and rocks at the bottom, then a net like plastic mesh on top of it and then sphagnum moss and peat soil on it and I planted the sundew on it, then put springtails in there to eat mould and for the sundews to eat the springtails, this has worked for me for 3 years so far.
I'm getting my first 3 on Thursday. I'm excited and nervous. Can I give them snow water? I saved some snow months ago and wanted to save it for a special planty plant
Nice! Congrats! You can use snow water and rain water instead of distilled, enjoy your new plants!
When will we get the video on how to re-pot?? I look forward to it
I can do that soon since they need it desperately at this point
Hey thanks for the guide! Something I wanna ask, since we have to keep water under the pots all the time will mosquitoes breed and invest the water or will the sundew keep them out? I wanna makes sure before I buy one because in my place mosquitoes are everywhere.
They will not get them all so they will breed in the water. I'm not sure if its available where you live but there are products for killing mosquitos that use BT (BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS) its a bacteria that kills the larva and you can put a small amount in the water and it should harm the sundews but make sure mosquitoes don't breed!
I put a lot of rain water just like you said in the bottom tray, the sundews won't start producing dews and the tentacles are dried out now. Please advise!
now i can water my sundew thx because is thirsty thxxxxxxx
I’ve been trying to get a few but can’t locally, I don’t trust buying from stores because I’ve had plants arrive just completely destroyed, I’ve been forced to get Pitcher plants instead and VFT’s. Love them but want to get sundews as well because of their look and different trap style.
My plant(a spoon leaf sundew) arrived in the mail yesterday and there's no dew on the teeny tiny leaves. How long before it starts to get dewy?
Are those wicks hanging out the bottom of the pot?
Did a repotting video ever get posted?
I know this video is a bit old, but what lights are you personally using? All the linked lights are too low on the DLI if used 14-16 hrs a day from what I can gather.
Does reverse osmosis (RO) water work for tropical drosera (more specifically drosera burmannii)? Thank you beforehand
yes
ill be nice to know the malsea proportions, and the time between
oh, i put one teaspoon per gallon, one container will last a life time! i feed once a week if i want a lot of growth otherwise once a month.
Can I put ,, fish amino acid on the reserve water for my drosera burmanii??
Can I use tap water for my new sundew? I use tap water for my Venus fly traps and they are doing just fine.
Can these plants be placed outside on a shelf? I live in Louisiana where it is VERY hot and humid in the summer time. I received my sundew in the mail in mid April, and still isn't producing much dew. I tried the bag acclimation method. The new baby leaves are producing dew, while the other established leaves have none, and are turning brown.
Yes you can! just watch it so it dont dry out! Sundews usually grow in sparse areas under full sun, just make sure its sitting in some distilled water
How much of max sea (in mL) do you add to the 1gallon of distilled water?
So any idea on an typical price range? How long can they survive dormancy? Would you recommend this to keep bugs out of your house As a natural alternative? Or is there perhaps a better plan for that?
they go from 5-50 depending on the species. tropical ones dont need dormancy at all, but the ones that do just go in and out on their own from what ive observed. They will catch bugs. If you want it to be more effective put a small light pointed at them at night and they will come
Cape sundews will go into winter dorm??
Should I cut the stalk of my 4 month old d. Burmannii? Some says that I should cut it at least twice for longer lifespan.. And some says it's ok as long that I kept on feeding my plant.. Hope you enlighten me about this I'm a newbie in cp.. TIA newly subscribe
i think mine naturally did that, the bottom just rotted out and the top fell and regrew
Just got one it was so tiny but had grown so fast in my greenhouse, so they set off seed that’s how they prop?
do you need to fertilize
I have baby plants sprouting underneath the bigger plants. I'm kinda nervous to separate them, cuz i don't wanna harm their roots. Any suggestions?
Is a cheap LED flourescent okay?
I have a small pink sack or bag growing out of the side of my drosera + ,What is it
Do the spatula sundews need to sit in water?
I breed Dubia roaches for my bearded dragon. Can I feed any of my carnivorous plants with the Dubia hatchlings? They’re a few mm long. About the size of a small cricket that you can get from petsmart. Maybe a tad smaller.
Great setup dude. If you live near New York I'll come buy some plants off you :p
Btw - what lights do you use, and how far above the soil do you place them? I really like your setup and I'm struggling to get that red colour.
im using some barrina LED t5 shop lights, They make grow lights now that are much better. They are about 12-14 inches above them
@@TechplantChannel Awesome thanks dude. If you have any advice on grow lights that suits this purpose please make a video :-)
I tried going down the grow light rabbit hole and came out more confused than before.
I am starting a Sandhu collection and how many watts should I get for my terrarium light? And would you suggest a brand? I was planning to buy a hygger brand light
how big of a terrarium? I would look for something at least 30 real watts if you want nice red color
Bought a drosera plant it has a sprout coming out the middle the plant is in ok condition not that good tho should I trim the big stem coming out the middle or leave it
Hello. I breed Dubia roaches for my bearded dragon. I’m wondering if I can feed fly traps, sundews and pitcher plants with small newly hatched Dubia roach babies? I have so many of them I sometimes have too many and need to find more uses for them lol.
I think really small ones would work well for traps and pitchers. Sundews do best with winged insects, hard shelled ones tend to get unstuck eventually
Nice video ,my graomogolensis have that black marks on it leafs but I don’t use peat just sphagnum moss do you know what can I do 😪?
hmm not sure then what could be causing all that acid built up
@@TechplantChannel I put it in a place with more light and now the new leafs are growing good .
What grow light do you recommend? I’m working on a greenhouse cabinet with glass shelves and I’m wanting to get a few sundews for it. To go along with my other tropical plants.
barrina grow lights they sell 2ft and 4ft im using like 20 of them at the moment
@@TechplantChannel thanks!
@@TechplantChannel is purified water safe for sundews and other carnivorous plants?
I need some of these to keep the nasty fungus gnats at bay. Could I use water collected from a dehumidifier if there's no rain water?
Yes
Instead of distilled water I just add a bit of vinegar to tap water. It dissolves the salts.
Interesting
i haven’t grown carnivorous plants before so i’m kinda confused by this. also i live in new mexico in the usa where it’s dry most of the year, would it be a good idea to grow them in a terrarium?
the humidity doesn't matter as much, as long as they are sitting in a dish of distilled water and they get good consistent light they will do great!
Can you over feed a sundew plant? I currently have a fungus gnat infestation and I bought a Sundew at my garden center thinking it’ll be happy with a ton of gnats... but now I’m not too sure lol
i once put them outside with a light shinning on them near a lake and they got absolutely covered and they survived
Will premixed carnivorous soil work well for these plants?
if its made for them i dont see why it wont work. they just need wet medium that isnt full of nutrients
See we keep alot of animals in an apartment setting but because we keep sensitive bodies animals but bugs are attracted to there food and poop a lot so I figure if kept out of the way that's a better alternative than sticky traps. Or chemicals
Yeah for sure they work pretty well
White kind of soil do The like?
Interesting to see the mushroom @ 3.54. Anybody have any experience with growing mushrooms alongside their carnivorous plants?
for me they are just random ones and not of purpose. However I just leave em be and do their thing
@@TechplantChannel Thanks for your response.I'd love to identify it. It might be interesting to take a spore print from the next one that comes along to try and cultivate them alongside the carnivorous plants. They look fantastic but I bet they don't last long once they have popped though.
Ok so my Venus fly trap is sprouting something that is not a Venus fly trap. It looks like a curled up sundew sprouting up. I had my sundew next to my Venus fly trap pot. This is possible right? I know I'm not crazy but this is crazy that it has spread itself into my Venus fly trap pot. Will they need to be separated once the sundews get older?
I was told I could grow them under a 40 watt shop light fine, is this right because I have small window sills and cats that like to eat any and everything. I could put it outside but my temperatures in the northeast get really really cold. Sometimes in the minus degrees. I was torn between a sundew or a Venus flytrap but it seems like the sundews are easier to care for. I was going to use a peat perlite mix so your saying that mix isn’t good??
tropical are the easiest imo, mine are under 40w grow lights that are about 8 inches above them. venus fly traps are native to the usa and experience a light winter, so people say they need to experience a yearly dormancy period to be healthy. its a little harder to simulate it with a fridge or freezer so id go for tropical sundews. there are sundews that also need this freeze period so deff look into your species you are interested in
i just bought a bunch of seeds and im hoping to grow hundreds of plants and feeding each leaf isnt really a viable option. ive heard that they can be sprayed with something like MARPHYL or maxsea like you showed. is that my best option and maybe use water to flush the soil out like once a year just incase it starts to build up nutrients?
I have a sprayer and i just do a quick sprits of the maxsea water mix and it works fine
