I'm glad Zoom got much better at their multi-effect units. I suppose you have to start somewhere as all the companies did. I've got their G3x which I like and ended up getting the bigger G5n but haven't had time to play around with it too much. Even the presets sound decent out of the box. That step effect you had at about 12.10 sounds like what Pete Townshend used on The Who song 905!
Everyone has that one piece of gear that really kicked in the inspiration to play. When I started I had a really awesome guitar, still have it, a great amp, still have it, and that was it. That was the late 80s. It wasn't until the Digitech GNX4 came out that got me. You can tweak so many details to the sound, and it has an 8 track recorder. I recorded my first album on that. Lol. Now it's the Axe3 and Kemper, but more so the Axe3. Just an incredible, seemingly endless database of tones and effects.
That sounded surprisingly good! :) I miss the first few years playing guitar, everything sounded great as I didn't know any better, and I played more instead of tone chasing!
The BOSS MD-500's Filter and Slicer modes as well as the original BOSS Slicer both have step filter modes which sound quite similar to that STEP mode to me. Pretty sure the MD-500's Filter mode has it... Slicer mode definitely did. I sold mine recently, so I can't go back to check lol.
My first multi-FX unit was the 707ii. I never really learned how to use it properly. I found most of the presets a bit too wacky but there were a few which I kind of liked. Years later I got the G2.1U for next to nothing from a friend at work. I currently have the G5 which I use for everyday practise. It wasn't until I got the G5 that I learned to edit or create patches from scratch (most of the time I just use an amp model, reverb, the looper and maybe a boost/OD). I still had the G2.1U for a while after getting the G5, so I edited some patches on there too. Ended up giving the G2.1U to my nephew but I don't think he's used it much. I'd be curious to see how you think the G5n stacks up against some of the other modellers. Part of me wanted to buy the G5n, but that's money I could put towards something a bit more serious (I'll be getting the Boss Tube Amp Expander and a Marshall SV20H soon).
A zoom505 into a laney AOR halfstack was my gigging rig. Only really used it for my clean and dirt tones but ya, it had a ton of wacky effects in it that were fun to play with.
@@LeonTodd AOR's are killer. I pkayed thru a friends 50 watt. It had this pull for more gain knob if memory serves me that I loved. He let me borrow it for a couple weeks. I didn't want to give it back at the time..
I would have killed for something like this at 14. I had to wait until I was much older and could afford a Boss GT-8 (after someone convinced me that amp modellers were very cool).
My fav piece of gear is the Zoom H4n Pro recorder....we aux out to it from any PA or mix desk coz nothing improves a band more than listening to yourself after gigs or rehearsals. Hard to go past the AFX as the gear of the decade. The interface and DAW was last decade easy but Fractal have captures the tones of rocknroll in a way that was thought impossible.
I think young bands who skip actually listening back to their rehearsals and gigs easily stick out as not having tuned their ears to calibrate their bands best sound in various locales. If you’re Ragdoll and you’ve got 10yrs on the board you can skip it but there’s the line IMHO
I love this. I recently Found an old boss OS-2 pedal that I bought before I “knew anythjng” and forgot about , and is a killer pedal. Stuff that is formative , is worth celebrating even if it’s not “awesome” by today’s gear demo standards. Also helps to have a totally killer player showing that you can get fantastic guitar sounds so many different ways
My first setup was a zoom 505 and i had a vintage mxr distortion + mxr envelope filter and mxr phaser with a old sunburst yamaha samurai guitar ran thru both a gorilla 1x12 combo amp and a 2x12 Sonaxe combo that I used a spliter to run both stacked not a bad first setup for a 12 year old at the time
AWESOME BRO MINE WAS A KORG 100X I BELIEVE IT WAS APART OF MY TONE JOURNEY THAT AND MY MEXI STRAT AN A PAIR OF HEADPHONES!!!! CHEERS FROM MONTANA BRO!!! YOU ROCK!!!!
And now you realize how much human ear is relative. When those units came out we all thought "omg it sounds so close to an amp!! Sounds so great"..... Now we live in the axe fx III century. ... "lol"
That little guy sounds really good. Let this be a lesson where not to cheap out...the guitar itself!! Decent tone is easy and cheap these days, but if your guitar is fighting you and going out of tune every time you do a halfstep bend, you're gonna have a bad time.
I still think a pedal like this is a vastly better gift to give to a beginner guitarist than a single stompbox. I know I would rather have this than like a DS1 for example, because a pedal like this gives you access to an entire world of different tones and options. Yeah a lot of the tones are mediocre perhaps, but I would say that almost none of them that you demonstrated truly suck. Plus once the kid gets good enough to really understand what is good or bad, they can make an informed purchase decision for an effect they really like.
I had MANY a RP. RP-1 the original that started it all RP-6 meh RP-12 I liked this, had amazing modulation effects RP-2000 the last Digitech product I bought Plus used an RP500 for a bit about 10 years ago that my buddy bought and had it hooked up totally whacky through the front of a DSL combo. I hooked it up line level through the loop and it came alive. Ye was SO HAPPY...lol
I think it might be the GNX3 or 4. Looks like an RP. I think they had an 8 track recorder on board with a backup band and light duty arrangement capabilities.
Nice bit of nostalgia. I had a DOD TEC8 which sounded like garbage, nowhere near as good as any of the Zoom stuff. After that I had a Digitech RP7 though which I liked and used right up until I got my 5150II sometime in the early 2000s.
Questions for you sir: When does new axeFx come out ? 😂 How do I sound like AC/DC? 😂😂 Why aren't you a pure guitar player? 😂😂 How do I sound like AC/DC??? Sorry, couldn't resist. Bored and thought I'd write my down under smart guitar buddy. 👍💝🎸👍

My first one was a Behringer V-amp 2. Ever since I've been into multi-fx units, settled now on the AX8 - which is pretty much my dream rig.
Been so close to buying a V-Amp to do a video with. The AX8 is a dream!
Was my 1st pedal. Still use it everyday. Bought in 1997.
I had one. Used it in my office when I was a software engineer. It was ok for practice back then. That was in the 90s I believe. Like 97 or so..
Dude I had one of these when I was young! I loved it. It's cool to see one being used again.
Some nice sounds there! I had a Zoom 1010 at 16, which I think was the precursor to the 707 without the expression pedal attached.

Seemingly??? Its full blown endless lol.
We're truly living in the golden age of guitar technology.
What album would that be, is it available to listen to here on RUclips?
Been a huge Zoom fan all my guitaring life. Had a Zoom 2020, then the G3X, now the G3Xn. Loads of great effects for the price of one boutique pedal!
Gotta get a G3Xn to demo at some point.

Should be able to replicate with a sequencer and a filter on something like a Fractal too. A challenge!
That must have been the Coolest Thing when you first got it! Thanks for sharing brother! Be Well Leon!
Definitely. So much fun.
Excellent video, great production, excellent sound, nice playing...now give me my lovely heart please...
How about a heart AND a thumbs up?

Rig of doom for a 12 year old, especially in stereo.
Zoom should send you a G5N to review. Throw and IR loader in the effects loop and test how it compares to your other gear!
I'd love to try that

dig the new intro!
Cheers!
Sounds like a kemper to me
This was my starting gear... this, a laney linebacker lr50 and a cheap chinese fender.
4:40 - nice poppy attack on the comp....
9:48 - Lima Oscar Lima.
Other than 9:48 and the LOL, most of the mod sounds are reall decent.
14:44 - nice Bridge of Sighs. Saw Robin Trower at City Gardens in Trenton, NJ, in 1990. Great show....
17:30 - sounds a bit ring modulatory....
Trill - another '50s sci-fi sound...
