What's that kind of voice where you're singing quietly, maybe in the car...? You can hit these higher pure notes but they don't feel quite like your normal falsetto or head voice. But if you add some power in the midst of this sensation, you lose what you had. If you try to get it back, you end up tensing up and it all goes away. Well, listening to and internalizing some of what Bon Ever (Justin Vernon) does can help us zero in on this 'soft mix' type of singing. It's beautiful and a great way of singing to have in your vocal arsenal.
As a longtime Bon Iver fan, I really don't think he's using a mixed voice for any of this. Justin Vernon essentially uses his voice in three, distinct, unmistakeable ways: his falsetto, his raspy high belting voice, and his deep bass voice. I think the fact that his singing in this video sounds like a mixed voice is a testament to his amazing control of his falsetto. For examples of each, listen to his verses on Skinny Love for his falsetto, and listen to the chorus for his more rock-style belting. If you listen to his part on Taylor Swift's Exile you can hear he has an incredibly deep voice, and he gets down to like a C#0.
Yeah exactly. It's falestto that sounds like he's in his head voice.
I love this song. Probably his ease to stay in head comes from his natural ultra low and powerful speaking voice
agreed!
Yes. Strong low voices have an easier time on headvoice and mixing. A lot of times, tenors, who are naturally higher in pitch, don't have strong voices and thus never really discover their true high range. That's why a lot of choir directors give tenors baritone parts, where they can't even be heard.
@@sebarhap I’m a tenor how can I discover my true high range?
He has the ability to create additional space for his head voice to sound bigger, it's really cool, and I think he controls the closure and airflow so that the sound is not too focused and the quieter harmonics can blend in with the sound. Sounds great!
Is Head Voice or Falsetto ?
@@vitor2001 head voice because falsetto would have no cord closure at all.
Bon Iver is great, so lovely!!!
That's fun man! You're really good! I've been trying to hit "Flume" for awhile and I've always gotten close but this really helped actually. Love it man!
This was great. I really enjoyed Bon Iver’s voice.
I like it when you do these videos on other types of vocals, instead of another one on screaming. It's like you wouldn't want to paint with only red, but you would like to add different shades. So it's good to have different tonal colors in your toolbox.
YES!! Variety is what makes it ALL so intriguing. Totally agree!
Thank you so much Chris. I've experienced monumental growth on your channel!
Tuned in all the way from Nairobi, Kenya. I really appreciate the quality of the lessons. 1M+ subs here we come!!!
Thank you for watching and engaging! I hope so on the 1M subs :) Spread the word!!!
Thanks Chris. New singer for me. Interesting Classical textures.
Thanks for sharing this video. It helps me to work on primary cords closure, to be able to go along the 4th, central octave, and reach some of the 5th. In this way I can begin to extend my vocal range.
Excellent!
Half way through the video I just had to comment that I just love the way you explain things and I love the fact that I now know Bon Iver and just overall I come across new music on your channel and have the oppportunity to know the "science" behind the singing technique. But this time I just like damn this song has fractal-like thing going on guitars that I just love. As an musician/composer myself I have to admit THIS SONG KICK ASS. Really good listen. Love your teaching. Great channel and 12-week course. Thank you ,Chris.
Awesome! Thanks so much!
Wow thank you again Chris! These are so helpful. I'm forever grateful I stumbled upon your channel.
Thanks for watching!!
@@chrisliepe Of course! Cheers!
I love all of your videos! To me I hear him staying in falsetto the entire time but slightly leaning it into the mask to give it more thickness and resonance, in between pure falsetto and a Bee Gee's super masky falsetto
I learned how to do this by singing along to Like Knives by City and Color, love this vocal
Pls do Shaun Morgan. There is not a single video on RUclips of a vocal lesson/ vocal reaction about him 🙏🏼❤️
Really good, Bon Iver is amazing
The band Everything Everything have some great vocals! I'd check out some of there stuff.
second this. Jon flips between head and chest so quickly, its a great vocal agility study
Oh man, I forgot how gorgeous this tune and his voice is. Have you ever listened to some Chris Whitley? Really interesting and dynamic voice. Dirt Floor and Weed are probably my two faves for his voice
Your analysis is very good, you make it easy to understand, great job 👍
So interesting i got stuck in listening to singer i don't even know 🤷♂️ i started by choosing the singer i like in the playlist, now i just want to devour all the content, amazing
Great song! I would love to see more vocal breakdowns of songs in these videos.
yo mate, right at the perfect time. im practicing my songs and did good progress. then pennyroyal tea came in my mind and i need strong chest support while mixed headvoice.
your vids help me alot
Great video! Insightful and enjoyable too!
Happy Birthday, Chris!!
Yet another great video. I've been practicing this voice more in the shower lol. You might check out Eliot Coleman from Good Tiger. I've been jamming their stuff a lot as of late. Eliot is capable of a beautifully pure mix throughout his range that he employs quite well in rock songs. Gives a lot of the songs a very soulful and jazzy feel.
I always just thought he was a high tenor... now that you mention it though...
@@alexandrosvavatzanidis4850 He probably has a slightly higher speaking voice too, but in this most recent album he sang a lot of lower stuff and there's a fair bit of body to it. I think he just uses his mix a lot.
Thank you Chris this was just what I wanted to learn will let you know how I get on
I was really confused when the "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAHHHHHH!!!" intro didn't show up. But great video! And you can teach for miles, miles, miles...
Also, if you want to hear some awesome screaming from Justin Vernon, listen to the song House Call by his garage rock band, The Shouting Matches.
ohhh... I'll check it out!!! thanks!!
City and Colour (Dallas Green) would be great. He has kind of unique head with chesty voice
Wonderful video Chris! I was wondering if you could do a video on Lewis Capaldi? I'd love to hear your take on his distortion
Great stuff! I'm hearing a similar tone and vibrato in your voice like the singer Anohni from Antony and the Johnsons has. Maybe do a reaction and lesson on that, maybe the song "hope there's someone" :)
Thanks for the suggestion!
@@chrisliepe ruclips.net/video/avabPY3XgRc/видео.html
My comment has nothing to do with that video. You posted a video that learned me how to scream and to do it, you had to do the tarzan voice. I was like "oh crap I don’t want to do that" but I did it. And I learned how to scream, so high five liepe, your my best teacher ✋
Awesome!! :)
I just discovered your channel. You HAVE to do a video on Hawksley Workman. Great work! keep up the great work!
Great suggestion!
Patrick Watson is a vvverrrryyy interesting singer, i would love to see you break his voice down!!
Great job Chris! Would really love to hear or see a Future Islands one. Sam has a unique voice and I have no idea how he does what he does. Would love your insight!
Seconded!
Thank you for this Chris. Can you do a video on Brad Delp, his voice is very unique and has a great range. I’d love to hear your take on it
Love Brad Delp! Yes, he's on the list!
Brad Dell would be amazing. Maybe Lou Gramm, too?
I think he also keeps his mouth a little bit closer together which, to my ear, pushes the sound through his nose a bit more. at least that's how it feels for me when I listen and imitate.
Make a video on how to sing like Ivan Moody. That would be both helpful and interesting, for people that want a voice similar to his
👍Thank you. I believe my voice is good for falsetto. So this video is very helpful for practicing. If you pick up some of gospel singers, I appreciate it. 🙏
Hi Chris, been loving the video breakdowns, learning a lot!! Would love to see a breakdown of a Dirty Loops cover (singer is Jonah Nilsson)
I don’t know if anyone would agree with me but Kirk Windstein of Crowbar would be an amazing vocalist to do a tutorial on.
Something I noticed while singing along here...
I tend to close my nasal passage in the back (I think you know what I mean as I've heard you talk about it) when I sing in head voice. It's fuller and more resonant when I do. If I consciously try not to, it's more quiet and breathy. Interesting.
1:49. Another professional voice teacher here. I don’t agree Chris that sounds like regular head voice to me. Mixed would sound different. I don’t think he had the best fold closure either.
Thanks for your feedback here!!
Yeah I agree. Sounds all like non-airy falsetto to me... I might be wrong though.
Maybe you have done this and I missed it, but I would like to hear you talk about how to “iron out” the break between chest and mix. More videos on mixed voice would be great as this is my biggest struggle!
Yes! Here are a couple that should be helpful to you: ruclips.net/video/CJtGbEo53PE/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/t_wju9Numnk/видео.html
Thanks! I will check those out!
Could you do a fun video of reactions to clips from your viewers singing at different levels, new to advanced singers to also see growth at diffrent levels. Help show starting is never going to be perfect and that's ok.
There's a million videos from crackerfarm of Seth avett from the avett brothers doing raw covers and solo songs that you should check out. Dude has an angelic voice
I would love to see you analyze Decode by Paramore. I can never figure out how she sings the word "here" so high yet so loud!
Hello Chris, great lesson! Beautiful songs en voice, I didn't knew him before, but will check him out.
Is Sebastian Bach already on the list? :-) Would be really really great (Skid row with Quicksand Jesus for example). Keep posting this Great Stuff please
Hey Chris, could you also do a video on Dallas green from city and colour?
Great idea!
Hadn't heard of Bon Iver up until this point, but he seems like a very controlled vocalist. If you like him, I might recommend you react to an artist named Grabbitz. He's more prominent within the electronic scene, but he also has his hand of more rock/alternative sounding songs (and if you're needing specific song recommendations, let me know). His voice is very delicate and personable, it's really beautiful tbh.
Thanks Chris! I find I can sing in this style of mix easily, but when I try to put more force behind it (say, in the style of Chester Bennington), I lose the power behind it and it just sounds like an unusable falsetto that doesn’t fit with that style of heavier music. Is it possible to do a video using this as a starting point and how to build to that forceful, chesty mix? I love your videos on mixed voice, but I just can’t seem to figure out how to get to that intensity behind it without sounding like a banshee. I’m capped at an F#4 right now in pure chest, and haven’t found a useable way to bring my voice higher with rock music. Thanks!
Great suggestion! For now, have you seen my video on "chesty middle mix" ?? That one might be a good "in the mean time" video for you.
Thanks!! I’m sure I have, but I’ll check it out again!
I'm always early to all my subscribers channels now it's kinda cool
nice :)
Very intersting as always!
Reacting to Tillian live performance (A faint illusion acoustic version) or in his band Dance Gavin Dance would be very cool!
Thanks for the suggestion!
"He is deceptive here".. Not for the reason I expected aha!
I'm as huge a Bon Iver fan as any other, been listening to Justin's sweet sounds for around 10 years, but being as this is a vocal tutorial, the autotune (obvious the first time from 1:42) doesn't necessarily help with those trying to get to this style/level, even if it's subtle.. I know he can sing (evidenced here in anycase, by when it's not obvious or the tuning isn't poked out of its cave) and perhaps it's a stylistic choice, it sounds good sometimes (I know from some interviews that he's said it is in some songs and all the Kanye influence blah blah blah), but don't go kicking yourself if you can't swing in and out of those notes all the time, keep going! :)
You should definetely look up Einar Solberg from Leprous. He also developed amazing light mix, but from classical perspective. He also sings metal, to I guess it would interest you ;)
Thank you again for your great channel
ruclips.net/video/6ANjK-4RM8A/видео.html
Thank you so much ❤ could you do an Ivan Moody one too ?
Awesome video, eager to try this out cause my head voice can go pretty low, never knew there was a practical use for it! Out of curiosity, have you already done a video on Billy Joel?
Can you do a how to sing like Brian Burkheiser from I Prevail?
Please react to Black Sea Dahu... They are great! Janine is an awesome singer.
I like this type of videos too, great!. I recommend you to watch "the little things give you away" from linkin park, but the live version, its impressive.. Thanks!
React to Opeth please, Mikael voice is so unique, maybe ghost of perdition, bleak or burden if you want something a little higher
Listen to more of this stuff!!!
ok :)
A dream in static by earthside ft Daniel tompkins (tesseract)
One of the best head voices 😇
Anathema would be a good band to react to.
Yes yes yes
Pls make small tutorial how to make crow sound it really helps🙏
Thanks for the suggestion!!
No matter how much I try, I don't receive the email that would enable me to join your course... could you help me? I'd love to get better at singing!
Awesome lesson, as per usual, always analyzing the best singers :)
Weird! I'm sorry it's been a pain for you! Here's a direct link! Please let me know if you have any other issues! www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/discover-your-voice/
@@chrisliepe Oh thank you so much!
I will definitely do that, thanks a lot! :)
@@chrisliepe I am a subscriber of your free course. I only have access to one video instead of several. how can i watch the rest of the free videos?
It’s pronounced “bon eever” not “bon “iver”
Great video regardless
Buckley? As in Jeff Buckley?
Can you do a reaction to My Chemical Romance Gerard Way? I cant fiqure out what hes doing to his voice for the life of me
I haven't done a typical reaction video on him, but I have done this one: ruclips.net/video/kmWohFdHfnU/видео.html
@@chrisliepe oh my god thank you! Dont know how I missed this! Haha
I absolutely love your approach to sing like/reaction videos. I would be super stoked if you did one on Bobby Womack. He was such a unique singer and great writer. Here is a recording of him covering, The Mama's and the Papa's (California Dreaming) ruclips.net/video/M34ZRgkv2to/видео.html
Thanks so much!
