I love how the recordings is raw and allowing his breath-inhaling-exhaling pauses and emotion especially while playing piano to be heard... What kind of technique(s) with his breath & singing do you think he is and does use?
This is my favourite cover of this song, and I'm glad I found your reaction to it. Think I'll give a few of his old albums a listen. And probably city and colour as well since they kinda went hand in hand at that point in my life.
I was all geared up and ready to hate on you if you were about to diss Justin Vernon so I clicked the video ready with hate in hand. Then you said you were a fan and I was thinking “damnit, he is just gonna give lip service”. Then as I watched the video I realized that no hardcore fan would not have listened to this cover before and you kept calling him “Bon Iver” as if that was his actual name. So what I’m getting at is that you gave an honest review of someone you are familiar with yet not just offering lip service to someone you idolize. That left me no choice but to subscribe. Thank you Sir. Well played.
3:50: "If you take that to a E4, I have to start switching" And yet, at 4:15, Justin Vernon sings from an E4 down to an A3 in the same voice. If that were chest, it would be breathier. What he does is slightly breathy, but there's still cord closure. At 4:34, he sings from an A3 to an A4 in what I can only describe as "one voice". Also notice the lack of breathiness. This also super contradicts a Chris Liepe video on Bon Iver saying he sings in a light mix. Same for your opinion on Thom Yorke vs his. As someone that has had to work with a voice teacher and basically start from zero to find that "chesty quality" that turns falsetto into head voice, I can personally vouch that falsetto doesn't sound like that. There are plenty of Bon Iver covers from male singers who cannot sing like that convincingly (again, chesty quality), and need to change key. That said your videos have otherwise been super helpful for me and I thank you for that.
"make it seem emotional" those faces aren't supposed to follow hard notes to sing. it is a feeling thing and it is unconscious. If you need to consciously do those the performance isn't worth watching tbh.
Good job man, I liked your analysis here. If I’m being honest initially I thought this was gonna be a video that criticised Justin as being a technically poor singer or something because he doesn’t have a voice like an American Idol contestant lol. But I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this even though I’m only a pianist. And I do love Justin’s arrangement here, it’s great fun to play and definitely not too tricky. Not sure if you’d be interested in learning it or not but I found the sheet music online for free, someone transcribed it, can’t remember exactly where I got it but if you do a quick google you should be able to find it without too much hassle. Anyway thanks for the vid dude :)
@@ramseyvoicestudio no thank you. Good vid. Not enough people reacting to his stuff. Can i recommend Bon Iver Circle-8. Sure the acoustics in the room do alot of the work. But its a rare song where he spends half of it outside of his head voice
Matt, love that you strip this down, because while it sounds beautiful, no question, in reality from a technical point of view, it's really not that challenging and I like that you allude to this.
Liked and subscribed to your channel... if you've never heard Diana Ankudinova, would love to hear your analysis of one of her songs... either Wicked Game or Rechenka.
1. His name is Justin Vernon. Not “Bon Iver”. Bon Iver is the band. 2. He has released plenty of material singing in his chest voice. You would know that if you were truly a “big fan”. 3. He’s a low baritone (or possibly even a bass) listen to his speech in interviews. He can’t go up into a mix or chest voice for those notes like a nutless tenor can (like yourself). So it’s also why he’s able to sing in falsetto effortlessly.
He’s saying “big fan” to probably imply that he really liked bon iver based on this performance. Not saying that he’s really a fan and had been listening to his past music. You could tell by how he called him bon iver not justin. Calm down dude
Hell yes to #3. I'm sure Justin could hit a high C in mix if he really put his mind to it but the quality of it would be completely different, like a rock star belting. Soft baritone C5 is a combination of words that doesn't exist.
More coaches need to react to Bon Iver

He sings breathing from the diaphragm: ramseyvoice.com/breathing-for-singing/

You are amazing at this
How much is the reverb helping the tonal quality of his falsetto?

I will check it out
Please do more bon Iver please
I would love to see a reaction video to Chelsea Cutler, she has a semi-unique voice as well

Analyze Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers please
You try way too hard/too classically trained with your own voice. There's no emotion at all

Title should change from bon iver to justin vernon. bon iver is the band.
God man the show tunes voice ain’t it lol
bon iver is the band not the person
I couldn’t make it past the first 3+ minutes because of how much I hated the way your voice sounds when you let noise come out of it.
Bobby, no need to be so rude, just go elsewhere ->
