@@keepingitreal618 having your own house seems like it would be cheaper, but you also need to add the property tax per year, the repairs, the yard maintenance if any and more plus your mortgage if any.
@@keepingitreal618 of course it depends on what country or your city you live in if a house or apartment or flat would be cheaper but cheaper is not always what one should search for, depends what is the best lifestyle for the person? For me, I don’t want to have to deal with finding repair people all the time for the upkeep of the house and the upkeep of the yard maintenance anymore.
I have been living in a 500 sq foot one bedroom apartment for the last 3 plus years in the high country of Colorado. My room is located at the end of the second floor hallway where I can access it with the stairs or elevator. My living room windows face east, allowing me the joy of watching the sun raise daily. My building has 28 units. Most residents are over 60, ranging from wheel chair bound, challenging health concerns to quite healthy people. It is very warm in the winter as well as cool cross ventilation in the summers. Great management and maintenance service. I am within walking distance of grocery stores, main street businesses, health care offices, and bus stops. I choose not to own a vehicle. We have a great transportation system. I can schedule Senior Vans for drop-off and pick-ups, and the bus stops are conveniently located. My apartment building and living conditions are similar to yours. I enjoy living here. 😃
Great video❤️💫Success depends on the amount of hard work and risk you take. Regardless of so many financial challenges, I thank God for a life transforming occurrence after past struggles.
Giving her my initial savings of $43,000 to invest in a brokerage account was a turning point in my life. It's been an incredibly rewarding experience and the best decision I ever made!
Impressive! Been trying to trade on my own for a while now, but it isn't going well. few months ago I lost about $27,000 in the trade. Can you please at least advise me on what to do?
I lived in 3 homes and 3 apartments, and for me a home just seems like a better quality of life, the shared walls and floors in the apartment really got to me. I could hear my neighbors taking showers and bathing, loud music 🎶, horrific cooking smells that sometime lingered on my clothes, and not all apartments complex will fix things me and my neighbors air conditioner went out in triple digit heat and the apartment complex just ignored us, would not fix it, my bathroom facet was running nonstop hot water racking my electric bill up to 300 dollars every month, they simple ignored it and would not fix so I figured if I'm paying 300 on electric and their rent i can afford a better place so I left with no notice. I currently stay in a home that I bought brand new, living in hone comes with it's problems and I have shelled out money for repairs but I would rather do that then deal with an apartment
Thank you for the comment; I'm glad you were able to find a home that was much more suitable for you. Some of those apartment conditions that you experienced sound dreadful!
I’m renting now also (similar situation) chose to sell my home & be debt free (not much left in savings but the freedom of not being “under water” anymore is priceless! Get yourself a white noise machine (small block) & plug it in right next to your door - keeps out the hallway noise AND keeps your conversations more private. Thank you for these videos!! I’m in my early 60s & far from retirement, but so happy in my newly simplified - and INDEPENDENT - life!
Thank you so much for the comment, and suggestion! The white noise machine is a great idea. I'm glad you've simplified your life and are feeling less burdened. It's a good feeling.
Susan, as a fellow hi-rise apt building dweller, I can totally relate to the cooking smells AND PEOPLE TALKING IN THE HALLWAY both coming inside your unit. I measured the width of my door and got a draft dodger from Amazon. Our halls are cooled in the summer, heated in the winter but mine is not used for drafts! If you have a welcome mat, use that to brace the long tube firmly against the bottom of your door. It helps a lot. 😊
Great video Susan, I agree with your list of pros and cons. I am a long-time apartment dweller and one of the pros for me is the downtown location of my apartment building, everything I need is within easy walking distance!
My husband and I downsized and decided to move to a newly built small house. We contemplated renting or traveling extensively before we made our decision. We decided, after considering all positives and negatives…example; I’m not much of a traveler and he didn’t want to rent, so based on past experiences, we decided to build a new retirement home, in a primarily retirement community. We’ve been here 5 years and love it more every year. It was a great decision for both of us. We’re in our 60’s, we travel occasionally, twice a year, it seems to be enough for my husband and I can tolerate the discomfort it brings to me. I really love being home, it’s honestly my happy place. Thank for sharing your experiences. ❤
A baby stroller makes a marvelous shopping trolley. We bought one off a neighbor, it’s meant to have a car seat attached. We can carry 3 good size bags of groceries easily over our very bumpy, wobbly sidewalks here in Philadelphia. Our store is 6 blocks away and the added bonus is that people are more likely to stop for the pedestrian crossing.
Your channel came at the right time for me as I have been contemplating downsizing. I'm 62, still working at a job I love, but i always tell my patients "make a change before you have to." Hoping i can follow my own advice.
I was a Community nurse for many years - District, schools, practice nurse, GP on call service etc. I used to give my patients ( and their relatives) the same advice and when we retired we did the same. Now we need to declutter further both this house will still our needs for many years
My husband and I downsized almost two years ago from a 4500 sq ft home to a 1400 sq ft. Apartment. Your pros and cons are right on the money. We are very happy with our new lifestyle choice. We love having zero maintenance and no responsibilities. We sold our home and pay a pretty hefty rent, but, like you, we are pleased with our decision. We are in our 70s and this frees us to travel more. We also unloaded all of the stuff that our kids don’t want or gave them whatever they actually wanted. It was great.
Thank you for sharing, Patsy. Apartment living isn't for everyone, but for some of us, it makes a lot of sense. I'm glad you're enjoying stress free living. :)
Two episodes… already your biggest fan! Controlled, honest but with due subtlety. The vignette behind you…charming and, dare I say, a commentor dressed and most presentable. Thank you! You have a great deal to offer our generation and beyond!
This is the second video I have watched. Thank you for a well done, thoughtful video. Downsizing is on my mind as I am 69. The pros and cons were great! God Bless.
Great list! I have been in my most recent apartment for 10 years on the 7th floor. I have probably been on my balcony 2-3 times in that whole 10 years. 🤣. Also I use Instacart for grocery shopping. The extra expense is worth it for me. I personally hate the yearly landlord inspections.
Thank you, Hazel. Yes, the balcony is for the view only... lol. Many people here do use instacart or some such service... I've yet to try it, but, perhaps one day.
I downsized to a1 bedroom apartment several years ago and have no regrets. I did the math and research and found that small apartments were cheaper than homeowners expenses. In California we have rent control, so I can estimate any increases. I love my home, have good property management and I've made friends with some of my neighbors. My biggest peeve is laundry. Sometimes the machines are being used when I need them!😅 But I'm retired & try to wait until people are at work..
I just found your channel. We downsized 5 years ago and these points are alll valid. The biggest thing I noticed was the grocery haul. We immediately bought a sturdy cart and it works great. We are every happy not to have to worry about home maintenance.
I moved into a senior living building looking forward to peace of mind and having like minded neighbors. What i got was an unreal and unexpected amount of alcohol and drug users that I preferred running, hiding, and separating myself from. Noise, extremely loud music, and partying 24/7. That went on for 3 years until the manager was fired and then half dozen temporaries that lasted 2-6 weeks each and didn't even show up to collect rent. Finally we got new managers who were proactive in shutting down the noise and parties but they began moving young people in who don't understand or relate to seniors and are very disrespectful. The walls are paper thin and unless you walk on eggshells or speak in a whisper noise travels through them and echos. Oh... And let's not forget about the elevator that's frequently down and for long periods of time. I would move back into a home anyday!
YIKES ! I moved into a brand new construction Income Based Apartment( one bedroom) last year and I LOVE IT , thank God ! Im on the 4th floor of my building, with a pool view. I just have occasional neighbor noise above me. Residents and Leasing Agents and Maintenance have been pleasant experiences so far. Hope you get resolution soon on an apartment or house soon, God Bless always !
@@blutru1328 I've been trying constantly with everything in me to move since the day I moved in here but unfortunately in this part of the country the availability of housing has been an issue for years and will probably remain so for years to come, and moving to another state isn't an option. I have no choice but make the best of this situation.
@positively60 it's horrible. There's a young couple that I share a bedroom/bathroom wall with. Every night they come home around 4am and argue and physically fight until after 7am when they finally fall asleep. She walks so hard I can hear her and my floor shakes. It was even worse during the pandemic. They supposedly have been trying to get them out but I believe he's related to the building owner so I'm not holding my breath.
Could you 1) put a sign up in your hallway, or outside your door, where you ask people to speak in a very low voice in hallway as the sound carries into the apartments. 2) why isnt 5 mins enough to test the alarm? Speak to your fire dept or city council.
Apartments are commercial buildings and work differently. A lot would depend on what type of alarm system they have. When I worked in the multi-storied office buildings, the fire department was there during the testing as they did a surprise fire drill with the employees (and guests). If you ever have to evacuate from a multi-story office building because a car caught fire in the building parking garage, you appreciate the fire alarm testing and drills. It is scary especially when you have smoke entering the emergency exit stairwell. As a note, have a flashlight near by in case of fire. You cannot see through the smoke. You get down low so you can breathe and use the flashlight to find your way through the smoke and out of the building. Wish I had that knowledge when I had to leave and go down more than 10 floors with a car on fire in the parking garage.
You are incredibly fortunate to live in an area that provides for rent control. In the US that is pretty much not ever possible so rents often go up significantly each renewal time, forcing people to have to move and incur the cost of finding a new place. And in my city of Columbus, Ohio rents have gone up about 500 to 1000 per unit compared to just a few years ago. Most young people have given up and move back in with their parents and seniors and middle-age people are struggling with the rent increases, especially if you’re single and only have one income to rely on.
Thanks for the comment, Nancy. Yes, affordability is a struggle for so many people here as well. It's very sad, and makes you wonder how things are ever going to improve. I am indeed very fortunate with the rent control.
I rented a mid-rise condo for 4.5 years in downtown Washington DC. The owner had zero intention of increasing my rent each year it came up for renewal. Starting year 4 I told him he should increase my rent. He was hesitant and said well the condo fee had been going up so maybe $50 more? I said, make it $100! I’m now leasing a townhome in a 20 bldg (multi-unit complex). I’ve had two lease renewals so far and so far there’s been no increase in rent.
Hi Susan, how are you? 😊 It does seem that there are always pros and cons of where we live. I’ve lived in apartments and in houses, throughout the years, and have seen both the ups and downs. I find that for me, it has been reasonably easy, adapting to each living situation. I’ve enjoyed listening to your viewpoint and it’s great that you’re liking your living space. I completely agree about having peace and positivity in our home. 🌟 Take care. Sam 🌷
Hi Sammie; Thank you again for the comment. I agree with you entirely. Like you, I am able to adapt well, and in most circumstances look for the positive in every situation. I believe that makes life much easier, and more enjoyable, if we're able to do that. :)
I haven't lived in an apartment building since 1996 but I think it depends on the building construction, amenities and management as to how enjoyable it can be. I lived in a building that was a low rise wood construction and a lot of sound carried between units/floors. It did not have ensuite laundry which was difficult. The onsite laundry was very expensive so I went to a laundromat (I did a lot of laundry because I had a baby at the time). That building also did not have any outside space, no balcony or patio. The next building we moved to was great. It had laundry and a dishwasher in the unit. It was concrete construction so much quieter, it was ground level with a large patio. The landlord was quick to do repairs. We stayed there until we bought our own home. One thing I did not like about both apartments I lived, was having to take garbage out to a dumpster at the edge of the parking lot.
Thanks for the comment! Your story shows just how different an apartment experience can be. (Here there is a garbage chute on each floor, and a large dumpster outside the door in the parking lot for larger items.)
We've been in our home for 30 years. Prior to that, I lived in an apartment while at university. My former roommate and I were discussing our old apartment in St. Catharines a few weeks go. We loved our building which was 8 stories tall. We weren't party animals at all and our building was full of older people. We loved how simple everything was at that time. One rental fee. Never had to worry about things breaking down. Safe. Conveniently located near a grocery store and Cdn Tire. If anything were to happen to my husband, I'd go back to an apartment again. My only issue is that I have kayaks and storage would be an issue.
Thanks for the comment; It's nice that have such fond memories of your apartment experience. Yes, you'd probably pay the equivalent for storage of the kayaks as you would rent... lol
Hello, did you just start your channel this week?!? Wow. You are getting big views. 🎉. I just turned 50 and am looking forward to what’s to come in my life. I enjoy your calm nature and relatable videos. Ty
My experience was not so happy. I sold my house in the woods, downsized a lot, and moved into a new, non-smoking, affordable senior housing building. The apartment itself was wonderful, spacious, well designed with plenty of storage and a nice balcony. The unhappy, unhealthy element was other residents who did not comply and would smoke tobacco and weed in their apartments. The smoke got into the duct work and air space and entered other apartments. In addition management was not willing to be vigilant to remove those folks from the building. So I ended up having to move a year after moving in. I'm in a single-wide mobile, back in nature more and am very happy, especially at renting vs owning. But the experience was so unhealthy for my lungs, super stressful, and the double move in one year honestly almost did me in! So I'd advise some due diligence if this might be an issue, and talk with the building manager, and a few resident to get an honest picture of what really occurs in the building.
It all has to do with MANAGEMENT! If they don't do their job the residents will get out of control. I was a property manager. If I got a complaint about a resident and it was proven valid the they got a WRITTEN warning and if it came to a third warning (it has to be legally 3) then I would terminate their tenancy. So what goes on in a building falls on the management. They HAVE to be proactive to keep their good tenants happy and get rid of the bad. CONTROL!!!!!
I was asking questions to one apartment building and although they allowed dogs small ones, which I do not have, I asked them if they allowed big dogs or pit bulls and they said they do not however, if someone needs one for emotional animal then they have to allow them so other words Even if they rule is against them, they have to allow them. I don’t mind a dog that is trained for a specific task such as a golden retriever, German Shepherd, but if it’s a pitbull that has a vest that says emotional support animal and it’s not trained or socialized that I think that’s a danger to others
Thanks for this video. We hope to move to a seniors' apartment next year. Thanks for the warning about the fire alarm testing. Our building wont have ensuite laundry. Im going to miss that.
Thank you for the video. Dealing with my father's probate and selling of his home and I am now seriously looking at relocating to another state. I would want to live in an apartment to make sure I am happy with the area before buying, but as I am closer to 70 in age I don't know if I want to mess with the upkeep on a house. I currently live/own a townhouse with neighbors on both sides and believe I can adjust quickly to an apartment. It has given me something to think about.
I actually laughed out loud when you talked about the hallway smells!! I do not like this at all. I’m also not a lonely person and love living alone. It’s amazing how similar are good vs bad are. Speaking of fire alarms we all have intercom’s in each apartment and the intercom came on at 3 am and stayed on with a horrendous alarm for one hour. We all had to exit the building in our pjs! What a way to meet your neighbors lol
...to block smells and drafts thru the bottom of your door, roll up an old towel and push closely filling the bottom gap...also, get quality foam tape (weatherstripping) to put around door frame. This will also keep noise and smells out!
Thank you for your video. The fire alarm issue and it's effect on animals would definitely rule it out as an option for me. I would not have thought about this.
I'm a new subscriber and enjoyed this video. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos from you. I also just moved into an apartment and can relate to the issues you discussed. 👍👍👍
Hi. Great video. Regarding the fire alarm testing, does the building provide the dates and times for these in advance? I feel bad for your cat... a solution could be to take him out of the apartment (to the car, for a ride, etc) around the time the alarm testing is supposed to start. But this would only be feasible if you'd know the times they do the testing.
Yes, they do give us advance warning, but it's during the daytime, when I'm at work... perhaps I should take a vacation day and take Bailey for a car ride, as you suggested. Although, I think he feels only slightly better about car rides as he does fire alarms... lol Thanks for the comment! :)
Neighbors can be horrendous, noise issues, HOA issues, joint building issues, personality conflicts about the parking, management issues-- just got out of a really bad situation
This is great content. I'm mid 60s, by myself and hanging on by a thread to my house. (Formerly married) One more huge repair and I am finished. Your content gives me hope and real world examples of alternatives. Good luck to you.
Your channel resonates with me. Gray divorcee here that remained in the family home. Have spent a lot on repairs and there are tons of things that need repair right now. So stressful and I am tired of it. But I have the most wonderful neighbors who are a blessing and the location is awesome. I would enjoy a smaller yard and newer home in a warmer location. I lived in apartments and condos when I was younger. I would be concerned about lack of control over rent increases and condo fees......things to think about.
Your situation sounds Almost identical to mine. I am going to turn 66 in a couple of weeks and thought I am still in my home, husband wants to sell it and take his share And move on with his new person. It's tough.
@patriciabarton6373 I am sorry you are going through this. My divorce was about almost 10 years ago and my ex-husband remarried a few months after the divorce was final. I filed and carried out the divorce bc I knew what was going on and there was no saving the marriage. You'll make it through!
Thanks for sharing, Gayle! There are many people in the same situation as we are/have been in. You're fortunate to have kind, caring neighbours. That goes a long way.
My lists are very familiar to yours, except i own a small affordable condominium. My condo fee covers all my utilities, including electricity. Neighbor noise certainly can be a pain, especially during covid when everyone was home. I am lucky too because my building is concrete. Oh yes, and the #1 thing is that I have seen mice. There are over 300+ units, and if one unit ❤❤ gets them, we all do. My cat loves to catch them, so I don't really see them anymore. It's something I will never adjust to. THANK GOD. I found this very interesting. ❤
I too have lived in several types of domociles. I find it is better to have your own front door, have two ways to exit your unit, having a closed circuit television at the ringer/bell, as well as garbage/and trash rooms on every level.
Have you just started your channel? It’s really great - loving it! My hubby and I are happily married, coming up 30 years. But we are considering deeply how we want our retirement life to be like and making lots of decisions.
Yes, I did just start the channel with the 4 videos uploaded last Monday. I'm overwhelmed with the response! :) Thank you so much for your encouragement; much appreciated. And yes, it's exciting to plan and ponder the possibilities of retirement!
Thanks you for another informative video Susan. I can relate to all the things you highlighted about living in a house! I now live in a Condo and it's a very comfortable lifestyle, except for the monthly fire alarm testing,🙂
Pro’s I called my landlord to let him know my oven wasn’t working, within 2 hrs I had a brand new stove in my kitchen. Con’s our rent control complex has been sold to a developer. We have no idea when the ax will fall and we will have to move. Another affordable home will be almost impossible to find here in BC.
I have the best of both worlds. I live in what is known here in the UK as a 'cottage flat' flat being another term for apartment. A cottage flat means it's not in a huge multistorey property. Cottage flats are only ever two storey, an apartment on the ground floor and an apartment above. Each flat has its own main entrance. This does mean it doesn't have the same security aspect that you identified as a positive but being in an upper apartment I do have door entry so I don't need to open the door to a caller until I have vetted them as it were. The property is very well built, soundproofed and insulated. I do hear some muffled sounds occasionally but not often. Perhaps a heavy door curtain would help to muffled sounds from the hallway? I moved here almost six years ago and haven't looked back. Like you I appreciate not having the bother of trying to find tradesmen or the cost of unexpected repairs. It's an absolute pleasure. It's still early days for you but I'm sure you'll settle in and your cat will eventually come to accept the fire alarm testing. Although it's not in the same decibel ball park my cat always hated the coffee grinder. I started putting some treats in her dish every morning when I switch on the grinder and it doesn't seem to bother her in the slightest now. If you know the day and time of the fire tests perhaps you can arrange some treats for your cat then. It does seem excessive for the alarm to ring for such a long time. Could you perhaps speak to the building manager to find out why it continues for that long? I would pop the cat in the bedroom with some treats and a heavy blanket and shut the door to try to minimise the distress. There's also a spray you can buy that helps to calm pets in stressful situations. Here it's called Pet Remedy, I'm sure you will get something similar in Canada. I can recommend using that as well. Your poor cat will still get a fright but may be better able to cope with a little help.
Thank you for the very thoughtful comment, and suggestions. Your flat sounds lovely! The suggestion for the calming spray for the cat is "brilliant"! I never thought of that; I'm definitely going to be looking into it. Enjoy your lovely home!
A decade ago I moved from a house across town to condo unit/Apt in order to get everything inside on the same level & no stairs. It’s similar to what you described. I have a foldable wagon similar to the 2nd one you showed. Not only do I use it to get groceries from car to unit, but also use it to haul cardboard to the recycling bins down in the parking garages.
Thanks for the comment, Karin. Yes, I'm definitely going to have to look into purchasing one. I borrowed one like that from niece, and it was a joy to use!
. i agree with you about the smells in the hallway . the worst one is bathwater . also the firealarm testing is not nice but i guess for our own safety . the worst in my building is the constant construction and renovation noise . but on the whole i really like living in my highrise apartment .
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I’m still in a home in my 60’s and agree with the cons of owning a home. Remembering what my Mom would do when a solicitor came to our door growing up. She’d yell “slam the door” Needless to say, I have no issue saying “no thank you”. The comment about vermin cracked me up. “I think about them more than I should” How can you not? Although with your kitty cat, you’ve got this covered. 😉 Sending good wishes from Wisconsin USA.
Thank you, Karen, for your kind comment! The comment about your Mom cracked me up, so we're even :) I agree with you, I think Bailey could definitely take on any vermin, but I hope I never have to find out.
In the US it is important to do your research. Is the maintenance staff full time onsite or only there a few days a week? Is there 24 hour concierge and security? The building construction makes a big difference. Flimsy building materials mean that will hear the footsteps above you and the voices in the next room. Only pick a place where the grounds are clean and kept up, no matter how nice the apartment itself looks. Read all of the online reviews.
Susan, I discovered you and your videos yesterday and have subscribed and watched all your videos. I have viewed an apartment in the building you’ve shown. I think it’s a very nice building and I did like the layout, mind you I like your layout better and the kitchen in white. The one I saw had brown cabinets which isn’t to my liking. Besides that hearing your views has made me think about it once again, it did seem like the management was good. Looking forward to watching your future videos.
Thank you for your kind comment, Connie. What a coincidence! Yes, some of the units have the (dreadful) yellow paint and the brown cabinets. I believe they're painting the units that become available to the light grey colour shown in my apartment. And I do prefer the white cupboards. But, all in all, it's a great apartment. And Management has been excellent.
My husband moved to Heaven 31/2 years ago … massive heart attack … We lived in a 2000 sq ft house for 15 years … and boy had we collected a lot! Put house on the Market and my son and his wife and two grandsons came and loaded me up! I had a two bed apartment here ready for me! The poor second bedroom is a storage unit 😂 really it is! I love the apartment … very quiet .. two blocks from town … but honestly feels like I am in the Country! There are about 22 apartments … six apartments in each section … Owner lives on property and is really nice and fixes anything that goes wrong quickly! Can’t t hear neighbors and mostly older people live here. It’s really quiet! I am in the United States the Southern part and experience four seasons … really gets cold in winter! I moved from a warmer climate … Enjoyed your apartment tour … and when they test your alarm … I would be with poor kitty … under the bed! It’s really terrible as animals have way more hearing ability than us! Get you some ear plugs … work wonders! LOL 🌈🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
I can’t even find an apt for seniors here in cal. for less than 4500.00 and that a 658sq ft. Then as you stated there is the yearly increase. Here the increase in those apts is 3 to 5 percent per yr. I’ll be staying in my house till I die, I’ve already lived here 30yrs, and would love a change, even if I moved out of state, it’s expensive.
I have lived in an awesome apartment for 7 years and I love it. Management is great with maintenance and handling issues. I had a neighbor that was smoking marijuana and they stopped it immediately and shortly after they moved out. My neighbors are great and I rarely hear anything so the insulation must be good. I have not liked the rent increases for the first time the last 3 years but I’m still much lower than other apartments and all apartments are doing it so can’t really avoid it and housing is so expensive. When you are in a house taxes and insurance can go up too and I have ptsd from owning a home and the increase in taxes constant repairs, many very costly, like roof, air conditioning, basement flooded not covered under insurance, plumbing. I hated cleaning the gutters, cutting the grass ect. I love the quiet, peace of mind, inside and outside maintenance, gym, and the grandkids love the pool. I don’t plan on leaving. I wish the snow removal was better but have been able to get out. I don’t love my 16 stairs but I do have an attached garage and small porch. Love your videos!
Thank you for your comment, Nicole. You and I are in total agreement, about the worry and expense of repairs. It's so nice not to have to worry about that. I'm glad you found a place that you love!
Thank you, Philomena. When I moved in, I wanted a lower floor, but there wasn't one available. At first, I wasn't too keen about the 6th floor, but I've come to appreciate it; my sunset view is quite stunning. From inside... lol
Thank you, Kristine. I did love my garden for sure, but it was so very much work... Not only the front garden, but there was a very large garden at the side of the house. I don't miss it yet; I think the amount of work that it required kind of burned me out... But I did enjoy it! It was good therapy... lol
Very appreciated video. Thank you so much. Some of your points would not apply out here but it still really helped. Widow living in a 4/2 and I’m always considering something smaller. Sounds silly, but out here in California, prices have gone up so much, I literally cannot afford to buy a smaller home or condo. Renting seems like an option. Thanks again.
Enjoying your channel. I've lived in 2 owned houses then an owned Condo Unit which we sold by choice. Then a temp rental stacked townhouse where the noise was worst! Now back in a house looking after repairs and ongoing decultering, cleaning, caregiving for the in-laws. Nothing is perfect. Just life and move on eh?!😂😊
I grew up in a huge house in a big family and have lived in my own house twice. My rentals in Germany, the UK and Belgium always had me take responsibility for repairs and council tax (UK) as per contract. Energy bills varied from month to month, rent from year to year. When I became a landlord for 10 years, the onus of repairs, property taxes was also on me (Uk)! And as a townhouse owner (Belgium) for 23 years all the onus is always on me. Big works have to be discussed with next door and these neighbours are lovely. I enjoy being a house owner and the freedom it brings to do DIY and decorate to my heart's content. The garden and my big garden workshop are my greatest joy. I have plenty of visitors and lunch parties. For big do's I inform my kind neighbours around me. What I also enjoy is that we respect each other's privacy but are there to help or can ask for help when needed. What I do not enjoy are the constant repairs that run into the thousands of euros every year. But then, even as a renter repairs were always on me.
Thanks for the comment, Elisabeth. I'm glad you were able to find a home that was just right for you. It is very evident that there are pros and cons to just about every living arrangement. Enoy your garden!
Hi Susan 🙂 Very well laid out apartment, very good designed 👏👍 I LOVE especially the extra storage room 🙂 I NEVER lived in a detached house and... wouldn't like it 😃 I prefer to live in a big house with many other people. Also WE hear the next dog barking, the cats above jumping up and down, people chitchatting in the staircase, various smells (from cooking to parfum 😉), whole life 🙂. What I used to do: ring at the doors (in your case, only on your 6th floor 😉) to say "Hello, I am... new in appartment XY groundfloor". Other people did same. When something gets damaged we send a mail to the landlord and call ourselves the plumber or who ever. Because of your balcony: just an idea... plant something growing in height (beans for example) so you won't have anymore that "emptiness" when standing on your balcony. Puuuh ! That fire alarm... Perhaps you could isolate your extra storage room against the noise ? Or, as somebody told: leave the house with kitty-cat (well... not always makable 😏). I look forward coming videos 😊 Best greetings from North-Germany 🙋🏼♀️
Thank you, Veronique for the comment and suggestions! I love how you called it a "big house with many people" :) That's a great idea about planting something tall on the balcony! But then I'd have to get one of my neighbours over to water it! lol
@@positively60 Not a Miami palmtree of course 😃🤣 You will do it, you are humourus 😊 In an appartment house one needs a lot of humour 😉 Great plus in your new life: you don't need anymore to put all the snow away outside 😉
Yes, it does take adjustment to live in apartments, I have done that. I find your humour is wonderful, no burning down building with the smoke alarm! Could you find out when the alarms will be tested so you and your cat could leave the building for that time period?
Thanks for the kind words, Irene! They do give us advance notice, but, the testing is done during the day when I'm usually at work. Retiring soon, so, hopefully will be able to whisk Bailey away at that time...
Apartments in my area are to expensive. I attempted to buy a studio apartment yet there was a bidding war which went out of my budget. I bought a small house at the same monthly payment as my current rental. I didn't have a choice. I will be living in my house as a studio. I'm going to enjoy my patio area in my new home. Price made my decision. The yearly rental price increase made my buying decision. My rental would have eventually been unaffordable for me.
I worked in various "luxury" apartment buildings and complexes for years when I was employed by a corporate housing company. I also lived in complexes in my younger years. The ONLY plus for me would be having zero maintenance. On the other hand, a renter owns nothing. I like owning my own appliances. I love owning green spaces. The privacy and serenity here are priceless. There is no privacy with apartment living😮 It is enjoyable to paint the walls, the floors, whatever I want! Also consider crime in the area; are there vehicle burglaries in the parking lot? A garage can usually be rented for an extra amount each month, but sometimes they are all taken. Plus, there is no guarantee your rental garage will be attached to your apartment. So what is the point of a garage when it is some distance from your residence?? Lol I vote for home ownership.
Be thankful you at least have a vehicle to get your groceries in, even though you have to get them up to your apt. I don't have a car so walking about 40 mins each way. Pulling about 50 lbs of groceries back home. On a positive note, it keeps in shape.
It may be tiring, pulling 50 pounds of groceries each way however, if it keeps you in shape that may keep you healthier longer and have less medical bills. :)
I am renting a 1 bedroom flat in a house in southern Ontario.I love it. Been here 5 years. Divorced and had no interest in owning a property. Great downtown location.
Does the alarms testing happen at the same time each month - you could be out while it's being tested and take pets with you. Mine gets tested for around 5 seconds once a month but they go off even when boiling something on the stove with the hood on full too - they can go on for 20 mins and are ex loud. Neighbour noises are the worst part of apt living. Loud talkers/parties and people who don't care for pets by taking them regular walks - dogs barking constantly for 8/10 hours are common. Sounds are you say, you'd think it was actually in your apt. I can hear my downstairs neighbour turning her kettle on (the dog barker owner). I'm on 3 rd floor no lifts so carrying bags is a nightmare so I'd agree with most of what you mention.
You're right, noises are a part of living in an apartment. It does take some time get used to... But, yes, incessant barking is difficult to accept or ignore.
You are lucky to get a rent controlled building that is well-maintained. Still enjoying my house and yard but I imagine someday I will have to return to an apartment or condo.
Oooh dear that fire alarm testing ! Hmmm … these days, noise cancelling ( or likely just decreasing?) headphones are available. I’ve never tried them, but my toddler Grand Daughter has some. They help her when Mom makes a smoothie with the noisy machine. Also helped last year on a trip when the smoke alarm erroneously went off in the middle of the night for over an hour ( I believe was caused by steam from the clothes dryer. Was not a single device we could just disconnect; was connected to a system ) . What a nightmare. The headphones WERE a help. Maybe they’d help you during alarm tests. Would a pet supply company have some kind of head phones for cats ?? Sure would be great !! Or, would it be possible to take kitty out to the car in a carrier during tests ? I’m a veteran apt dweller . The noise from n’bors are a fact of life. I hear my across - the - hall n’bors as I type. It’s definitely a low grade stressor. I’ve had worse n’bors where it was almost a constant l, high-stress situation. Touch wood, it’s not like that now. I do put a “wind buffer” cushion at the base of my door. It helps some.
Thanks for the comment, and great suggestions, Liz. I'm laughing now, just picturing trying to put headphones on Bailey :) Yes, the noise is a fact of life, and something that can be mostly tolerated. The cushion along the bottom of the door is a great suggestion.
Haha ! Yes that is a hilarious image ! I have a cat, too ! Laughing right now picturing her wearing noise reducing headphones ! ! Thankfully we don’t have those tests in my older, smaller building. If I move again I’ll have to ask if they perform those tests. Good luck with a “wind cushion” at the base of your door helping a little. And stay warm ! I bet it’s cold in Ontario as I write this on Jan 20th. It is here right by the border, in the States.
You didn’t mention how many people have had to deal with rent-viction. Also people who sneak smoking indoors, especially when it’s cold out. Or pot smoking. We also had to deal with water damage from an upstairs tenant, silverfish, roaches, broken elevators and unwanted people coming in with other tenants. And once we lived right across from a fire hall and didn’t realize how noisy and lights it would be day and night. I could maybe do an owned condo, with a good condo board, but not a rental ever again.
In the end, house ownership is cheaper.Rent goes up, and if you do the math, if your home is payed off, the long run means only taxes, insurance. Apartments are gulping up your money.
I am looking to move to a high or mid rise condo. I think I could deal with all of those. I also am looking for a safer environment. With an elevator, and laundry facilities. Gotta keep getting rid of stuff though. Thank you for 5his video.
Been a renter 10 plus years, the cons are really taking a toll. Had an issue with the AC unit leaking and dripping lots of water onto the floor, it took maintanence WEEKS to get it fixed, I had to finally insist that they get a plumber/HVAC technician to fix the problem.
I don’t understand why they can’t have the fire alarm testing once every three months or even every six months instead of every month that seems like it would be enough to test. Maybe in Canada or your province it’s a requirement or law?
I love my apartment but I've had 2 neighbors upstairs that have been pure crazy. So much noise coming from them is insane. They both have kept me awake for hours. I work and am awake early, but when I have neighnbors who are inconsiderate, it's crazy.
That's too bad, about your situation! When someone else's inconsiderate actions take a toll on us, it's so frustrating. I hope it somehow improves for you.
I never want to go back to apartment living. Thin walls and floors which provide little privacy, slow response to maintenance needs, neighbors constantly changing, poorly maintained parking lots, and so much more. I hope I never have to do it again.
Best house repair, my son looked out the kitchen window and said mom, someone stole our fence! Yup, no fence to be seen!. Went outside to find after a major wind storm the 50 ft of back fence had blown over because all the 4x4 posts had rotted off. I took a skill saw chopped off all rotten wood (6 ft became 4.5 ft high) new, shorter 4x4 posts and we again had a fenced in yard. I told the guy who dug the new post holes he really should charge by the holes dug not by the time it took to dig the holes..i was prepared to spend $20 per hole or $200 and he charged $45 for the job.
My wooden fence has gotten damaged by storm with portions ending up on the street 3 times in the last 10 years. Nobody hurt! My big trampoline flew into said street during another storm, again no damage done! My neighbours are the best. Zero criticisms instead...help. I am quite good at repairing that fence now.
Bed bugs! My greatest concern!!! Never had them. Never want them. Our fire alarms and smoke detectors are checked yearly by the fire department. City does yearly inspections of heat sensors. Maintenance does yearly inspections of our apartments. Necessary but a bother sometimes.
I bought my second condo and swear I will never live in another strata as long as I live. The maintenance fees go up every year and they can put it up as much as they want. Every year we have assessments and the other year we had 2 assessments. I’m 68 years old and am still working. I’m done and am selling and buying a modular home and pay a pad rental every month. I won’t have to listen to my neighbours and listen to the BS strata. If you buy a condo, get into a cement building so you can’t hear your neighbours.
Thanks for the comment, Darlene. Yes, I believe condo fees are an issue here as well, increasing dramatically. Very stressful. Good luck with the modular home!
Hi honey, love this video and love your channel! I live in a small cottage but there's a lot of upkeep for a single gal, I'm starting to date again now and I thought maybe I should wait because maybe I'll meet the man of my dreams before moving into apartment I have a RUclips channel called "dating over 50 with Robin" and I love how calm you are in your videos, I seem to get animated LOL I'm working on that. Have a lovely day honey❤
Hi Andrea, I was very fortunate! As I mentioned in the video, in our province, if a building was built prior to 2018, then the rent can't be increased more that 2.5%/year. If it was built after that, there is no rent control. And rent can increase very much! It's very challenging for many people.
It is not a necessity to test alarms every 30 days!! That is insane. I hate apartments. I think there was only one place I didn't hear noises and it was a townhouse. They had concrete firewalls between them. I would move back there but I just can't deal with stairs. So I am going to look for something one story.
I love renting…..it gives me peace and at 60 peace is just what I need! ❤ thanks, enjoying your channel.
Thank you, Cathleen! Yes, peace of mind is what we need. :)
Having your own home is much cheaper. A cheap rent in NZ $2400, then electric etc. state pension is around $2000 monthly.
I absolutely loved living in an apartment building. I’ve lived in several houses since, but I would go back to apartment/condo living in a heartbeat!
Yes, it seems to definitely be a "love it" or "hate it" situation!
Your apartment sounds great! So glad you were able to find a home that is just right for you!
Great video❤️💫Success depends on the amount of hard work and risk you take. Regardless of so many financial challenges, I thank God for a life transforming occurrence after past struggles.
Wow Congratulations on your financial success! What's your story?how do you make such monthly??
Elizabeth Ann Hanson I really appreciate her efforts and transparency.
God has used her to save so many families financially. I remember when I met her at the bank, she was indeed a good woman.
@@datnohi8612 yes, I would take a home over an apartment any day.

Thank you, Doug, for the great suggestion!
Great video Susan, I agree with your list of pros and cons. I am a long-time apartment dweller and one of the pros for me is the downtown location of my apartment building, everything I need is within easy walking distance!
Thanks Tina! Yes, location is very important.
Thank you for your comment! You two came up with a great solution! And I'm with you, travelling is nice, but home is just.... home. :)
What a great idea! Never thought of it! Thank you.
Your channel came at the right time for me as I have been contemplating downsizing. I'm 62, still working at a job I love, but i always tell my patients "make a change before you have to." Hoping i can follow my own advice.
Thank you, Mary. I love that advice; it's always easier to adjust to something when it's our own choice, instead of having something forced upon us.
I was a Community nurse for many years - District, schools, practice nurse, GP on call service etc. I used to give my patients ( and their relatives) the same advice and when we retired we did the same. Now we need to declutter further both this house will still our needs for many years
@ruthportway5198 i hope i can do the same!
Thank you, Patrick! How very kind of you! Your encouragement is really appreciated. :)
I love my apartment! My balcony faces a gorgeous pool with beautiful trees. I’m always out there.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, a beautiful view is one of the joys of apartment living.
This is the second video I have watched. Thank you for a well done, thoughtful video. Downsizing is on my mind as I am 69. The pros and cons were great! God Bless.
Thank you so much, Mary, for your kind words. God bless you too!
Thanks for the comment! Yes, apartment living suits some, and doesn't suit others, that's for sure. I'm glad you found one that you love.
I just found your channel. We downsized 5 years ago and these points are alll valid. The biggest thing I noticed was the grocery haul. We immediately bought a sturdy cart and it works great. We are every happy not to have to worry about home maintenance.
Thank you, Janet. Right; the cart can make or break the grocery haul. :)
Thanks for the comment. Yes, housing availability seems to be a major problem almost everywhere now. I hope that your situation improves.
That sounds like a very difficult living situation. I hope things improve for you!
Thanks for the comment; those are options to be considered.
It does seem that there are always pros and cons of where we live.
Take care.
Sam 🌷
Hi Sammie; Thank you again for the comment. I agree with you entirely. Like you, I am able to adapt well, and in most circumstances look for the positive in every situation. I believe that makes life much easier, and more enjoyable, if we're able to do that. :)
Agree, it is not a perfect world. There is no perfect house, condo or apartment.
Yes, you'd probably pay the equivalent for storage of the kayaks as you would rent... lol
New subbie from LA Cali... You are fun to watch and very funny in a subtle way. Thanks for the entertainment.

Hello, did you just start your channel this week?!? Wow. You are getting big views. 🎉. I just turned 50 and am looking forward to what’s to come in my life. I enjoy your calm nature and relatable videos. Ty
I did! I uploaded the 4 videos on January 13th! I'm absolutely overwhelmed by the response! :) Thank you so much for your kind comment!
Thanks for the comment. The Management here seems very good, so far. I'm sure it's not an easy job!
Thanks Sarah, for the comment and advice. I'm glad you were able to find a much better home, after having such a dreadful experience.
So much better not being around lots of people. Good decision.
Thank you, Frances. The laundry is so very convenient!
Thank you, Janet, I'm glad you found the video useful. Good luck with your relocation.
What a way to meet your neighbors lol
hahahaha! Now you made me laugh out loud! That's one of my fears... the middle of the night evacuation!

Thank you for your video. The fire alarm issue and it's effect on animals would definitely rule it out as an option for me. I would not have thought about this.
Glad it was helpful!
Agree. Fail. Start the process of finding a good place to live. Do not renew. When you know, you know. Just ask your cat😅
I'm a new subscriber and enjoyed this video. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos from you. I also just moved into an apartment and can relate to the issues you discussed. 👍👍👍
Thank you, Linda! Your comment is very much appreciated!
I'm glad you were able to relocate to something better!
This is great content. I'm mid 60s, by myself and hanging on by a thread to my house. (Formerly married) One more huge repair and I am finished. Your content gives me hope and real world examples of alternatives. Good luck to you.
Thank you so much for the comment! I definitely know the stress you're feeling. I hope everything works out well for you!
I'm sorry for your troubles, Patricia. I hope you find some sort of way to stay in your home, if that's what you'd prefer.
Thanks for the great comment, Judy! Yes, I'm hoping that if I ever did see "vermin", the cat would take care of it!
I too have lived in several types of domociles. I find it is better to have your own front door, have two ways to exit your unit, having a closed circuit television at the ringer/bell, as well as garbage/and trash rooms on every level.
Thanks for the comment, Bernadine. These are good points!
Thank you for the kind comment! Oh, that alarm testing!
Oh no! I can't imagine how stressful that is, wondering when this is all going to take place...
Nanny .. say ... Landlord, YOUR oven is not working😅
Thanks. Yes I’m 80 and considering moving out of my house to an at.
I hope you find just the right place!
. i agree with you about the smells in the hallway . the worst one is bathwater . also the firealarm testing is not nice but i guess for our own safety . the worst in my building is the constant construction and renovation noise . but on the whole i really like living in my highrise apartment .
Bathwater! Oh my; that's not good! And yes, renovation noise is very difficult to deal with and try to ignore.
South Western Ontario resident here. You are living my dream......maybe someday! aaahhhh
Thanks Cathy! Yes, of course someday! You never know what life will bring!
I admit I’m struggling with living in a rental condo. For me it’s the idea that renting simply doesn’t feel like home.
Enjoyable discussion. I just subscribed!
Thank you very much, Wendy!
Very good advice! Thank you, Miss Bee!
Very interesting video.Best wishes from Ireland.
Thank you! You too!
I moved from a warmer climate …
Enjoyed your apartment tour … and when they test your alarm … I would be with poor kitty … under the bed!
It’s really terrible as animals have way more hearing ability than us! Get you some ear plugs … work wonders! LOL
🌈🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
Thank you for your kind comments, Gail! I'm glad you found a lovely apartment, after your husband passed. I'm sorry for your loss. Bless you.
Yikes!!!
Wow; that is very expensive! It's fortunate that you have the option to stay in your own home.
As for avoiding the great haul, try the delivery services such as voila? Theyre not terribly expensive, and imo, the fee is better than a hassle.
I've never looked into it; something worth checking out. Thanks, Thomas.
I really liked your talk, i don't know if I could live in an apartment unless it's the ground floor
Thank you, Philomena. When I moved in, I wanted a lower floor, but there wasn't one available. At first, I wasn't too keen about the 6th floor, but I've come to appreciate it; my sunset view is quite stunning. From inside... lol
Thank you Susan - that was helpful, are you missing your pretty garden?
Thank you, Kristine. I did love my garden for sure, but it was so very much work... Not only the front garden, but there was a very large garden at the side of the house. I don't miss it yet; I think the amount of work that it required kind of burned me out... But I did enjoy it! It was good therapy... lol
@@positively60thank you for responding
Very appreciated video. Thank you so much. Some of your points would not apply out here but it still really helped. Widow living in a 4/2 and I’m always considering something smaller. Sounds silly, but out here in California, prices have gone up so much, I literally cannot afford to buy a smaller home or condo. Renting seems like an option. Thanks again.
Thank you, Monica. I hope you're able to find a place that is just right for you.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, you're absolutely right; just press on and move and make the most of it. Good luck with everything!
I too ama senior living in an apartment building and I agree 100% with all of your points.
You did an excellent job , thank you❤
Thank you very much, Kimberly!
This video has been so helpful. Thank you!
Thank you, Carol!
Thank you! Apartment living sounds a nono!! Is it cheaper?
Everyone's situation varies, as far as finances go. For some people it is, others it's not... Thank you for your comment.
I downsized to a very small apartment… It’s quiet and cozy, I love it! Very affordable :-)
Thanks for the comment, Beth! I feel the same way as you!
Yes, I imagine enjoying your patio will make the studio apartment a little easier to handle.
Lol
I vote for home ownership.
Thank you for the comment; all very valid points!
Be thankful you at least have a vehicle to get your groceries in, even though you have to get them up to your apt. I don't have a car so walking about 40 mins each way. Pulling about 50 lbs of groceries back home. On a positive note, it keeps in shape.
You're right, Sandra! I am very grateful for the car; thanks for helping me keep that in perspective! :)
It may be tiring, pulling 50 pounds of groceries each way however, if it keeps you in shape that may keep you healthier longer and have less medical bills. :)
Scented hallways, i use air filters😂 they work wonders.❤
Love your sense of humor. :)
Thank you so much!
You are lucky to get a rent controlled building that is well-maintained. Still enjoying my house and yard but I imagine someday I will have to return to an apartment or condo.
Thank you, Sue. I agree; I'm very fortunate, having found this apartment.
Sounds like you've been through it! I hope you have found a more suitable place to call home.
In the end, house ownership is cheaper.Rent goes up, and if you do the math, if your home is payed off, the long run means only taxes, insurance. Apartments are gulping up your money.
Thanks for the comment, Rhonda. Your point is valid.
I am looking to move to a high or mid rise condo. I think I could deal with all of those. I also am looking for a safer environment. With an elevator, and laundry facilities. Gotta keep getting rid of stuff though. Thank you for 5his video.
Thank you, I hope you find something that's exactly what you're looking for :)
Thank god for the old lady cart!!
lol... I know, right?! Except for those darn little wheels!
Been a renter 10 plus years, the cons are really taking a toll. Had an issue with the AC unit leaking and dripping lots of water onto the floor, it took maintanence WEEKS to get it fixed, I had to finally insist that they get a plumber/HVAC technician to fix the problem.
Can only imagine how a landlord can make or break a renting experience..
I agree! I'm fortunate; it is very well managed here.
Thanks for the comment; that sounds just awful!
I don’t understand why they can’t have the fire alarm testing once every three months or even every six months instead of every month that seems like it would be enough to test. Maybe in Canada or your province it’s a requirement or law?
I'm not exactly sure why it is so extensive; I guess better safe than sorry!
I'm planning on selling my small townhouse when I retire next year. I already have shared walls, don't want stairs or repairs any more.
Thanks for the comment, Jan. I hope you're able to find a home that suits you better.
No always increasing real estate taxes, ever increasing home insurance , HOH fees or upkeep! Thinking about it myself!
I would have both! A tiny home and an apartment. 😊
I never want to go back to apartment living. Thin walls and floors which provide little privacy, slow response to maintenance needs, neighbors constantly changing, poorly maintained parking lots, and so much more. I hope I never have to do it again.
Thanks for the comment!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you, Susan!
Very resourceful repair, Lyn! Fences and wind; I've experienced that nasty combination as well :)
Thanks for the comment. Bed bugs would be just awful! Going to try to not think about that... lol
Thank you so much for your kind comment, Robin! I'll check out your channel :)
How did you find a rent controlled apt? Were you on a list of some sort?
Hi Andrea, I was very fortunate! As I mentioned in the video, in our province, if a building was built prior to 2018, then the rent can't be increased more that 2.5%/year. If it was built after that, there is no rent control. And rent can increase very much! It's very challenging for many people.
NO SOLICITING sign, as a single woman, was a lifesaver!
It is not a necessity to test alarms every 30 days!! That is insane. I hate apartments. I think there was only one place I didn't hear noises and it was a townhouse. They had concrete firewalls between them. I would move back there but I just can't deal with stairs. So I am going to look for something one story.
Thanks for the comment, Annie. It is definitely a challenge to find a place that suits (most of) our needs...
