MY FAMILY TRAVELED THIS ROAD MANY TIMES IN THE LATE 1950'S /1960'S THERE WAS A NEW TOWN EVERY 20 MILES IT SEEMED LIKE,I WAS ABOUT 8 OR 9 YEARS OLD/ WE DROVE FROM REDONDO BEACH TO SACRAMENTO CALIF IT TOOK ABOUT 6 TO 8 HOURS!! IN A 1955 CHEVY WITH 5 KIDS IN THE BACK SEAT!! HAHAH WHAT A TIME!!
This looks like one I went on. Between the two sections of I-5 at the settlement of Grapevine, there is an old straight 2-laner. Then there's an old road that goes left up the hill, and after 1/2 mile the land is cut off and you're looking at four lanes of speeding traffic. I think you're on *that* part.
I'm not sure, but I think this may have been it? I've seen two big curves on the old ridge route called that. One south of this location and this curve shown in the video. Though the one most people think of as dead man's curve, I haven't been there. I heard there was a small arroyo at the edge of the Ridge Route at that curve where tons of cars came off the road and crashed into. They called it the "Junkyard".

Sam U.S.A you are lucky!! Beautiful memories!!!🍃🌹🍃
I went across the entire thing back in about 1967. You could go from Gorman down to Castaic. You appear to be near Dead Mans Curve.
I was born in 62, I remember driving through there when I was old enough to remember sitting in the back window of the car with my brother and sister
Old Ridge Route bandits hit and robbed the slow-moving cars. It became a big problem until the law took it on so says the history.
Cool video...👍

I LIKE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS TOO
thanks to interstate 5, us hwy 99 is obsolete
Obsolete, but interesting.
Not in the Central Valley
I WOULD NOT GO OUT THERE! HAVEN'T YOU HEARD THE LEGEND OF THE SPHINCTER SNATCHER? HE LIVES IN THOSE PARTS. I KNEW HIM WHEN HE WAS YOUNG...AND ALIVE.
Did he snatch your sphincter?
Talk about having too much time on one's hands.
Is it supposed to be two lanes?
CrazyforTrouble Yes. It's too narrow now. 1910s cars were narrower so two could pass on this road. Cars got wider after World War II.
Matthew Anderson Have you been on dead man's curve?
