Very helpful. I had some headset play in my new Ultimate CF SLX 8. I took it apart, bearings looked fine, no damage to carbon either. Saw your video and I learned that my bolt tightening sequence was incorrect. So I loosened everything and re-tightened starting with the load on the bearings (i.e. the cover), then the integrated stem/handlebars, and finally the bottom bolt that holds the fork in place. Play fixed! Thanks!
Thanks for this video. I have a Canyon CF SLX Disc 8.0 (bought in 2018). I have been thru this situation twice. Had to order the Bearings from Canyon NL to be shipped to India. The bearings were badly rusted on account of my excessive sweating when doing the hill climbs. Had difficulty removing them. Also the Canyon representative mentioned that the use of muc-off for cleaning can damage the bearings if the water while cleaning finds its way to the bearings. The bearings have to be ordered by Canyon only as the generic bearings do not fit the Canyon bike.
Hi Steven, I saw at minute 2:30 when you remove part of the upper bearing. When you removed the upper bearing, a part of the bearing got stuck. It happened to me too. How did you remove the part? Thank u..
I just removed one for a customer using the method in this video: ruclips.net/video/jjvtbboLuo8/видео.html. Instead of bending any tool like the man in that video did, I used an old steel kickstand with a foot at the end.
*Looked at a lot of options for getting my **Latest.Bike** . Great find in SAVA. Super light, nice components, really good value as it comes with many options only found in much higher priced bikes.*
Thanks Steve. I have the same bike. One question, I heard that those Acros bearings have a side up and and a side down. I have checked a pair I have but haven’t seen any arrows or other. Is that true? Reversing the sense when mounting them can be fatal. Thx
Bearings comes with a little bezel (like a conic shape). It must be point out into the frame. There is no way to fail with it because the shape in the frame is made to fit with the bearing shape.
Hi, I've got a cp10 cockpit. The last bottom most bolt where you use the Allen key to tighten is protruding out after I tightened it. How should I go about it to make it go back into the gasket?
Hi Steven, thank you very much for your video. I would like to ask you How should I tighten the clamping screw on the top cap for adjust the bearings. Should I use a torque wrench and tight the clamping screw to 2 Nm. I Have Canyon Cockpit H 31.
Hi Steven, I would like to ask you for your advice again. Should I put some carbon gripper paste into of steerer tube (fork) where the wedge expander is seated? Because when I wanted to set up height of my cockpit H31 or put it down I could not tighten the cap screw for 2Nm. The screw started cracking and plastic liner has been broken. The wedge expander been pulled up. That means that I wanted to tighten the cap screw for 2 Nm and the wedge expander is pulled up through cap screw. Would you be so kind and if it possible to send me copy of instalation manual for your upgraded cockpit or write me an answer. Thank you very much I appreciate your help. Kind regards. Libor Nemcok
Maybe i missed it, but what is the right headset bearing? In the Inet i found this "is44/is44 bearing set including centering ring. The two bearings in the dimensions 44x35x5,5 and 44x33x6 are used in the models Endurace CF SLX / CF SL / CF, Grail, Inflite CF SLX & Ultimate CF EVO / SLX / SL, among others. " But on the website the set costs €60. under an other video i found: Upper: 6707-2RS, Inner x Outer x Depth (mm): 35 x 44 x 5 Bottom: AC3748, Inner x Outer x Depth (mm): 37 x 48 x 7 with one 45° chamfer on inner side but i think this is for an older version. Where do you buy your replacement?
Hi, really good video, thanks. after I put everything back together there is still that rocking between the fork and the frame. could the bearing be broken? if I tighten the load on the bearing too much it won't turn as freely as before. thanks
Are the bearings new or you are just cleaning and applying new grease? If the bearings are new be sure the plastic bushing and bearings seats correctly, if it seats correctly, could be that the plastic bushing it’s worn and need replacement. If all seats correctly and after adjusting the plate all keeps rocking, check for wear un the frame and the fork. If bearings are not new and everything else looks correct, maybe the bearings are the problem and needs replacement.
@@StevenMolina thanks a lot for your reply. Just cleaning the bearings as the bike is not even one year old and probably never took a drop of water unless I washed it. Thanks again
@@adrianoproia5352 If the bearings are fine, check the sequence of how you tighten the bolts. It should be as in the video: 1. Stem cover (make sure the step is sitting properly on the tube), 2. Stem, 3. Bottom bolt. This is how I just fixed a slight play I had on my month old Ultimate.
Can you confirm what year your bike was made? It seems the headset spec changed after 2016, so helpful to know if yours was made after this date. My 2020 ultimate has already gone on the upper bearing, and I’m thinking I’ll replace the full set. It actually seized totally, and I have a concern that I’ve damaged the bearing cup on the top of the head tube (it has some scratches and unevenness). Do you know if this is a plastic insert or have I damaged the carbon itself?
Yes, but just a thin coat of grease to prevent corrosion, the bearing rotates internally, not between the frame and the external part case of the bearing. Put a lot of grease arround the bearing could affect the way it seats againts the frame and how it alings the fork and the rest of conponents.
Hi! In reality, you just have to make sure that the bearings and the plastic bushing seat correctly, these determine the alignment of the rest of the components with the frame. Regarding the transition plate, it has small points that align the spacers and in turn everything is aligned in the same way with the aerocockpit, so, when aligning the handlebar, everything is aligned, what I did at the beginning was to mark with paint some small dots on the fork and handlebar to align everything later. I hope that has answered your question.
The secret to removing that upper bearing wedge is to knock the steer tube from the side with a mallet. Hit it enough times and it should knock the two parts away from each other.
@@StevenMolina it’s important to work within your abilities I guess. But I’m a career mechanic and I use mallets on carbon all day. Just have to make sure you’re using the right kind of mallet and hitting in the right spot.
I don’t know, that was first time a replace this bearings and decided buy it directly Canyon, and it just sales Acros bearings brand. I don’t tested other brand before.
It depends. It was first time in almost 4 years that I replace it, but I do an annual maintenance for parts like headset and wheels. In the other hand, even with that annual maintenance you can notice bearings are very bad. I think clean and check every year and decide if it’s necessary replace the bearings is the best way to proceed and avoid damage in the frame and fork. Bearing are a pretty simple and cheap replacement compared to a frame or fork.
@@homerovl21 These bearings are very poor in quality and the cover design is poor too, mine only last 9 months, had difficulty removing them with a lot of rust. I don’t think poor maintenance, simply I stick to a schedule, I don’t found practical check bearings each week, I simply check every 6 months. You wrong, I installed the bearings with grease INSIDE, the rolling surface is internal, no external. Thats the place where the grease is need it. I just put a little coat of grease externally just to reduce the chances of external corrosion that, in the end, does not affect the functionality of the bearing, putting a lot of grease between the frame and the bearing has no effect in functionality of the bearing and could affect the way it seats on the frame.
@@StevenMolina That may be your opinion, but every bike build I've ever seen (including pro tour mechanics) use quite a bit more grease when installing the head set bearings. the additional grease will help with corrosion protection and in no way impact bearing fitment in the cups.

Blame "muc off" - LOL. Good bearings last a lifetime. Obviously a poor design w/ inferior parts.
Sweating destroys them faster than muc off. I work only with canyon and only with muc off…. Acros isnt the strongest quality.
