  • Here's percussionist Alasdair Malloy's unique perspective on his performance with Mike Oldfield as part of the London Olympics Opening Ceremony.
The clip starts at the moment when the Queen has just parachuted in and the band wait onstage during two verses of the National Anthem before beginning their performance.
Although the sound is a bit odd - highlighting the difference between the live sound and the PA, the clip captures the excitement of the occasion and glimpses can be seen on the big screen above the stadium of what was shown on television.
When Alasdair vanishes from sight he has gone to take over playing the midi tubular bells from Mike. You might just catch a glimpse of them being played on the big screen at that point.
    The band is:
Mike Oldfield - guitar, bass guitar, midi tubular bells
Robin Smith - grand piano, keyboards
Jamie Talbot - clarinet and recorder
    Luke Oldfield - guitar, keyboards
    Ash Soan - drums
Alasdair Malloy - glockenspiel, tubular bells, bell tree, suspended cymbals, mallet kat, synth drum pads, timpani, tambourine, marching snare drum, mystery wind instrument(!). Off camera - orchestral bass drum, midi tubular bells.

honestly Mr Oldfield just doesnt get enough credit by the music media in general . you have to remember he was only 20 years old when TB was released he also plays excepts from TB3 .I saw him in sydney 1982 and his band was great especially the female bass player she stood out and the crowd were in awe of her dont know her name. I hope he records the forthcoming TB shows in London next spring . Only now you can get FM radio concerts of Mr Oldfield. He should have got a grammy for TB

@@mischr13 He said himself in multiple interviews, that playing at the Olympics was one of the greatest things (if not the greatest) of his career cause he was able to paly his music for almost a billion people. Or do you mean the social media part? If so: He never had a particular interest in his fans (that's ok) and hated touring. Since his retirement on the Bahamas, he is not communicating with his fans anymore. All he does is that he would ask his followers a single question once or twice a year and it's almost alway some sort of market research. I mean dont get me wrong: That's totally his choice and it's perfectly fine, but is Mike Oldfield a nice guy? No, I dont think so. We (Germanys biggest fan club) had several incidents with him. One for example was in Spain when we were invited for the premiere of Muisic of the Spheres. We flew to Spain, had the most terrible seats in the whole place (behind a huge pillar) and he didnt show up to the agreed meet and agreed after the show. And that was not the first time he did that to us

To answer your question 6 years later... It's a jazzy arrangement of themes from Tubular Bells made for the olympics. The main piano theme and the electric guitar part that accompanies it for a few bars at the very end of the opening section are in there, played by the brass :)

It's called "in dulce jubilo" it's a christmas hymn written by Johann sebastian Bach, it dates from around 1350 this is Mike's version. The full version is on youtube it's a Christmas song from 1975. Its brilliant. You can hear a choir sing it too but original is very slow.
