Troian Bellisario on Her Eating Disorder, FEED, and PLL's Future | Pretty Unfiltered

- I met Troian Bellisario several years ago on a Pretty Little Liars red carpet and have always admired her talent on the show. I recently reunited with her to discuss her new film, Feed. Troian wrote it about her own struggle and journey of living with an eating disorder, in hopes of helping people who are dealing with mental illness. I had the chance to ask her some questions about the movie and get her advice on how to move forward and let go of the need for control, and I couldn't resist asking a little bit about PLL, too. Feed is out now, and if you know anyone who is struggling with body image, an eating disorder, a mental illness, or grief, I highly recommend this movie.

Have you guys seen Troian's film? I was blown away by such an accurate depiction of eating disorders. It's real, heartbreaking and enlightening. I hope everyone gets a chance to watch the movie, and please know if you need anyone to talk to, I'm here for you! NEDA is also a great resource.
Oh! You're the interviewer! That must have been so cool, meeting Troian...
she described an ED very well. it bothers me a lot when people assume that they're all about losing weight and looking skinny. there are so many different things involved with this illness. the control thing is very real, and was, and still somewhat is, one of my biggest struggles. This makes me feel less alone. Thank you for being so out there Troian. Keep fighting girl, and all of you beautiful souls out there struggling with a mental illness. 💜
Troian's wise handling of playing this role with her ED experience makes me question Lily Collins' choices for "To the Bone." I hope Lily is fine, but I really don't know how someone in recovery from anorexia could possibly lose weight for a movie portraying an anorexic girl and maintain a healthy mindset. That goes against everything I've heard from ED specialists and successfully recovered people.
True. About the last sentence: Most people who struggle with anorexia (they're usually in EXTREME denial for as long as possible even when multiple close people straight up state that they have anorexia constantly. People with anorexia would get very agitated and defensive about it when this happens (psychologists acknowledge this and this is also what I did for years). It feels like a threat when people tried to help because to someone who has anorexia, it doesn't seem like they're actually going to "help"; it seems like they're threatening to take away their productivity and happiness. Because anorexia doesn't necessarily start when they're underweight or starting to eat less, many people can argue that it stems from far before that (not enough validation from parents; never feeling good enough; not feeling pretty, disciplined, and/or smart enough; extreme PTSD from instances like rape (the worst and most long lasting PTSD symptoms are from rape and women and girls make up the majority that suffer from PTSD), big traumatic events that are worsened by microaggressions that grates salt into the wound, etc). I'm saying this because even when someone with anorexia finally becomes an "acceptable weight" by doctors, doesn't mean that all the traumatic things it stems from is gone (because anorexia is a COPING MECHANISM often used for control). This is important for parents to realize so they don't continue to rub salt in the wound and think that it's okay now.
She's an amazingly talented woman! Love these interviews

Thank you for your movie feed troian bellssario you are amazing and beautiful inside out thanks for getting this message about eating disorders out. I cried because I felt the way you did in the movie I had a voice inside telling me to restrict or to get rid of food or to exercise the list goes on and on. I got down to 95 pounds and I realized I needed help. But I got the help I needed and am better but I also realize that it is a journey you are right, and I could relapse I don't plan to but I always am watching myself and my behaviors and thoughts. I'm healthy now. If anyone is looking for a place for treatment Remuda Ranch really helped in Arizona.

I looove this interview!! I looove Troian! I want to watch Feed!
Ive been struggling with an eating disorder for the better part of my life. Im healthier than I used to be but I still have tough days and hours and moments. Its defiantly part of who I am. I have no doubt I will be able to relate to this film
We are creatures of habit in everything in life (habit does not demean an eating disorder as no big deal. Habits keep almost all negative mental illness behaviors and addictions going. If procrastinating is a habit, it will be even harder for a human to stop. Creating new good habits to replace the undesirable ones is the most successful way to go)
It's helpful to look at research in the brains of people with anorexia and people who are more susceptible to anorexia genetically. Researchers have found similar findings in people with OCD. Best of luck in your journey 💖. Progress is not linear a and the fact that you have come so very far is the peak of the iceberg of evidence of your full potential. You are very strong and I'm glad that you are that successful at improving your quality of life
This is so important ♥️
Pll movie would be great!
But no A! sort of just a keep up with the liars type thing... oh and Spencer's crazy family. we need that too
I LOVE TROIAN SO MUCH :’)
Such a good actor!
Your so strong and brave im proud of you ❤️
I love her she’s my fav ❤️❤️
LOVE YOU TROIAN BELLISARIO ❤
Troian has such an unconventional beauty !
Yo Feed was fucking lit! Omg.
Ohmygod bruh
I've had my issues with disordered eating and it was really never about loosing weight, it was always about control and i appreciate that someone would get that? Like a lot of people portray anorexia as this obbession with weight and like looking through magazines and standing in front of mirrors crying at the sight of your body.
But i didn't ever really do that, i guess i felt out of control in my own life and not eatingm along with other self destructive behaviours was really what i did to gain back control you know? Idk I'm rambling
Sinks & Trapdøørs you're not rambling, you're speaking your truth. I wish you the peace of mind that can carry you to a safe place where you wouldn't need to self harm either through an ED or otherwise.
I love Troian Bellisario. She's very smart.
i love troian so much i want to meet her so bad ❤️❤️❤️
I love her
i fucking love her so much.
I loved this 😊
My little girl is called Troian :)
Uploaded on my bday! ❤️❤️
I watch feed it is a beautiful go watch it its really beautiful movie
She was beautiful I would have never thought she had an eating disorder. I proud of her to get help and share her story
I don’t have words to describe how proud I am. Holy cracked
Where can I see the movie?
where's the link?
I didn't even know she had a eating disorder
Lorraine Kanter she had on PPL
I don't think so. Yes, she was suffering in the 3rd season I believe, but I don't believe she ever had an eating disorder on the show.
Lorraine Kanter She's been fighting it since she was 18, I think.
She went through it during her high school and college years and wrote the movie a few months before she booked PLL
Yes and she also dealt with self harm as well.
Kirbie is such a great interview. She is my inspiration for wanting to be a reporter.
❤️
Hello I love trorian 💖
Elysia, we posted our full podcast interview with Troian -- please watch it / listen when you can on our channel. Thank you so much!
I had a eating disorder. Ate 400 calories a day then I’ll burn off 400+ calories . It made me very unhappy and depressed. Don’t do it ! EAT!
I love help Tori says that she will struggle with them for the rest of her life because it is something that you struggle with the rest of your life you’re never cured from an eating disorder you’re never recovered from an eating disorder but you can be in recovery or you can be controlling the situation.
I had a eating disorder but it was the wrong way I used eat too much and it used to help me escape life ino I'm a pig :( I have / had bad depression and that's why :(
it wasn't the "wrong way"! eat too much and throw up or not is also an eating disorder. and u are definitely not a pig because u eat too much cause u want to get out of life. eating disorders are more than just anorexia or bulimia and u should definitely look out for help, and u gotta know that doesn't exist a wrong way of an eating disorder. I hope u get better at any problem u have. sending lots of good energies, kisses
I wouldn't put your situation off as no big deal. It is just as serious and important. When it comes to seeing doctors, the wise ones know that it's not all about how long to make the patient survive, it's about *the quality of life*. Eating disorders are diagnosed because it affects the quality of life. This is a situation to dissect and correct behaviors and understand the UNDERLYING PROBLEM. Eating disorders are a COPING MECHANISM. Once you realize that, you can find out what in your life you have to confront instead of masking.
You should talk to your family doctor about this. Zoloft (an SSRI and antidepressant) helps immensely with binge eating. It made me stop pretty fast
Also, when eating, start with high volume and high fiber foods so you get full faster and can't binge as much. Example: an apple, bowl of spinach and lettuce, chicken breasts, watermelon, a glass of water before every meal. The less you binge and the less often you binge, the less often you will feel the need to binge. We are creatures of habit in everything in life (habit does not demean an eating disorder as no big deal. Habits keep almost all negative mental illness behaviors and addictions going. If procrastinating is a habit, it will be even harder for a human to stop. Creating new good habits to replace the undesirable ones is the most successful way to go)
omg i thought the interview was ashley benson hahaha
Does anyone know of other series/films she was in that are good, apart from Pretty Little Liars and Feed? PLL had such a brilliant cast the majority of whom I had never heard of before. Troian in this interview has something in common with her character Spencer in PLL
We posted our full podcast interview with Troian -- please watch it / listen when you can on our channel. Thank you so much!

Xx
Bae
Threee years ago? Time keeps passing. This is still such a good movie and the best representation of anorexia on film if I’m being honest.
Troian Haim hahahahahahah
ok , who disliked !!!!
Is
Wait the woman in the movie had an eating disorder? The trier makes it look like a horror movie where her dead brother has become like a paricite eating her from the inside so he can live through her.
eating disorders are a horror to experience- they kill you
Like si no entiendes nada🙂
All the girls on pretty little liars are too thin. If she wanted to help viewers, she could have gained weight.
well it's not that easy when you have an ed
It is to stay skinny dont lie
Not true :)
it can literally stem from trauma
