      With Parallel EQ, I have to admit I really love subtle EQing before Reverb and Delay sends just to excite the right frequencies and to make sure I'm not exciting muddy and/or sibilant frequencies and/or killing transient response entirely. Since you're only taking small percentages of sends in parallel usually this only leads to a VERY small amount of phase shift. But I hadn't thought about using a linear response EQ for that job until you brought it up. I might give that go. =)

    David, please stay healthy and keep going on during those awkward times. All the best for you.

    Yeah rules are not going to help to create the best sounding mix!
    I sometimes use weird trick that gives me unique punchy, distorted sound, I put Summit audio TLA-100A as an insert to a track, for example kick drum track, then duplicate that track, flip the phase so is completely cancel out and then set the saturation knob to high, play with gain reduction amount, and you get only the focused distorted kick sound that brings it to life when blended nicely with other drums...

  • @LeonardoLima-nk4fv

    This is a really good subject, the pultec trick Andrew Scheps does, a pultec by its nature is very phase coerent, he takes some freq and adds after.... he is very clever....Other amazing youtube lesson guy, Dan Worral talks about this, ~emphasis de-emphasis eq~ to create effect on some saturation or compression, take off a freq and take back the right amount only yo change the behaviour of the processing. All of this is dependend of how much you blend with the dry signal. Ive experimenting eq the parallel vocal compression, a gentle bell medium Q, a few db on some low mid 200-500 helps not build so much energy in the whole mix and keeps clarity.... also been experimenting use a compressor, like a dbx 20;1, on vocal, and equing after, boosting the fundamental with a shelf with a bump and a large bell around 1k 2.5k and it really improves the punch of the compression. But all my parallel is at least -10 from the dry, based on the diference of level of a 3x1 rule of micking, that avoids phase problems in the same source.

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  3 года назад +1

      Just to clarify, it doesn't matter how "phase coherent" an eq is, the process of eq'ing in parallel will cause phase cancellation, unless a linear phase eq is used, there's no middle ground, is either LP or not. With that said, as I mentioned many times, phase cancellations are not the end of the world and many (experienced) engineers will compensate automatically for that, even those who are not technical and don't actually know this happens (many), because at the end, how the sum sounds is important and even more how it sounds in the mix. But knowing what happens is better than not knowing and guessing because not everyone has golden ears

      @@mixbustv Yes, agreed! It always will adress some phase issues, but who cares? I remember first time saw the approach of guys like Chad Blake, messing with parallel, with sansamp and all, is all about how it sounds in the end! thanks! But, we have to understand at least a bit of the physics of the sound! there is the science and the art! Thanks!

    Hey David great video! Just a question: I want to add parallel saturation to a bass track or a kick track but keeping it very clean like below 100 Hz. So I thought of this: I make a low shelf cut at 100 so that those frequencies don't get triggered by the saturator, then add saturation using the audio effect rack - I use Ableton - add the saturation as much as I want and then after that I boost the same amount I cut before the saturation. That way I get the same frequencies in the low end without them triggering the saturator - love this thing you can do in Ableton, adding parallel on a track and then process the parallel and the source all together! Any thoughts?

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  Месяц назад +1

      Copy track, use A LINEAR PHASE EQ to cut whatever freq you don't want to saturate. Add to taste to the dry signal. Don't complicate things.
      Cut, don't shelf. Saturation is not a compressor, you feed it any amount of low end it WILL saturate

    Question: Mid Side microphone technique and Decca tree microphone technique is used less and less. This is a loss. Because these create the exiting recordings?

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  9 месяцев назад

      No, it's because for advanced mic setups like that you need the mics, the channels, the room. Today it's all computer based. With that said, it's a game of numbers. WIth home studios there's exponentially more people "making music" because of that, you see and hear more people cutting corners and doing things with a computer. Professionals and real recordings are still done the way is supposed to.

    Hi David,
    Could you say something about top down mixing and do you use this technique? I'm about to try it out but I'm not sure that it make sense. Sometimes it happens that my quick rough mix sounds better then the actual mix and then i go back and make it simpler. So it could make sense? Whats your opinion about this topic?
    Greetings from Germany

      @@rocktonmusikschule eh.. that is not really getting the picture of how things are gonna sound in mastering, unless you are doing the mastering yourself in which case, it's not really mastering, you're just mixing and applying limiting. Good timing because a video on this is just about to be released tomorrow. The main flaws here is you're taking decisions during the mix based on how things sound with a limiter and that screws things up a lot, but again, if you're doing everything yourself, it's not really a big deal because you basically miss the mastering altogether.
