The thumndowners did not realise they've received professional consultation for free, watchable and re-watchable anytiime they like, wherever they like. Back in the day, you had to a) know who to rely on; b) move your ass an GO THERE; and c) pay and hope you got your notes right and will remember. damn right! I've travelled to London 12 years back for getting info like this... Now I'm here to see if this guy is doing it right, and yes, man , you're a great person! Glad you're around and push info and inspiration! There's so much involved in music production, one always feels they are forgetting stuff, and a re-cap is always nice. Talk to us about truncation and how bouncing a vsti synth in different bit-depths will sound different to the source (live playback). I've been bouncing the Virus Ti in REAPER in 64-bit, and only then, was the 3d image there. Even 32 bit files sounded flatter to the original digitally synthesized source sound (Virus ti USB). We're talking no converters here - it really was an eye opener for me.

I wrote out the checklist for anyone like me who has the information retention of a goldfish:
1. How's the performance of the musician?
2. How good is the instrument?
3. Check the phase between DI and amp
4. Volume ride each note of the bass if you have to (most important)
5. For specific notes that pop out use a dynamic EQ. Or multiband compressor if very inconsistent
6. Split the bass into "lows" and "everything else" (then you could ride the fader on just the low end for example, or compress one and blend it)
7. Use Meldoyne to extract a MIDI track from the audio signal and then blend the MIDI instrument (e.g. synth bass) underneath.
8. Saturate the mids and low mids (not the subs) to help it be heard in a mix better, and to help it translate to smaller speakers better

The synth-bass trick is huge. It's popular in cinematic music as well, as contra-basses become super muddy. But if you dial in a bass-synth, you have that "wow" effect.

I actually have a great trick for low synth…..now with plug ins such as sound city and ocean way studios try busing your synth track to a virtual room and put the stereo mics on for all three near, mid and far…..set up the room so that you pick up only the pre delay of the synth and tune that baby in …..your synth will go from decent to Dr. Dre!!!

Great things to apply, yesterday I was mixing a track and I couldn't feel the same bass as my reference, the problem was that I didn't had enough harmonic content on the bass, and I was applying the R-Bass from waves in wrong freq, to low in that case I changed to 136 Hz, and I get the sound I needed. As always great content and really happy that you confirm some things that I was already doing without being sure if they were correctly. Thanks for all the content this channel is gold.

If you are recording a Bass player, a bass tech / guitar tech, can save you from other issues dave points out...
New Strings, Right Tension, Neck and truss rod in harmony.... Intonation, ect...
My bass, for 20 years had a neck issue... Then ."AAHHHHHH" , One guy fixed the neck ., and ruled them all....
Ive put new strings, setup all pickups, bridge and intonation to the point, it is the bass i knew it could be....
If only I could go back and play those bass lines again.........Well , i could,.... but , Riding levels, smashing it with BWL seemed to do the job.... ;)

A simple way to ride basses is using a plugin like "Bass Rider" by Waves Audio.
The better I feel like I have become at mixing, the more I end up at this channel somehow. This is both a positive, and a negative I guess. Since most of these I feel could be due to the content being is a certain way. Either way, I really appreciate the tips you give.

Another common scenario: I have the stems, what sort of engineering / technicalities I should be aware of? I am your grandma and need the obvious being clarified. I personally had some things here and there with stems being in 48000 and my daw in 44100... figured them out but info will help a ton, even to those who already have a workflow when receiving stems. You are great man!!

Great info as always but something people watching this need to know is he can't train your ears, you still need to train your ears for these tips and techniques to work. Spending years practicing and learning to hear properly is key.

Nice! I recently added midi synth bass to my played bass guitars mainly to have consistent frequencies below 80 Hz… and it’s working amazingly well with rock music. I have 2 tips to add to your excellent checklist: 1) be sure that you can hear the bass frequencies (speakers, headphones, room treatment). 2) check bass masking from other tracks
A tip I’d like to share regarding phase is that you can use (without going overboard on the visual stuff) an oscilloscope to see if you are getting any cancellation. I use schulz audio for this.

Hi David, one more great video as always. Thumbs up! 👍 I'm in a process of making a very similar video, namely a friend of mine asked me how to record heavy bass for metal, so I will follow up soon on this interesting topic. As I'm a contrabass player myself, I can tell that the biggest problem people have is the monitoring part and the untreated rooms. Low end in a mix can be biggest issue to hear and work on it thus. One trick as a workaround is to export the mix and listen to it elsewhere, on headphones also, so one can have at least a rough picture of what is happening in that spectrum.

Great advice. I love bass. I love playing it, especially with a tight drummer. Bass was the first thing I ever got paid to play.
Guitar players (which I mostly am) are not going to like this, but speaking of masking, your guitar may sound fantastic by itself with its own fat bottom end, but in a mix I roll it off whenever the bass is playing, using automation on an EQ. If you have a muddy mix, an indistict bass guitar, this may be the fix.
Can you do a part two video on low end talking about getting the kick and bass working together? That is still challenging for me and probably lots of others. Thanks. You are great. (¿De donde eres? Amo tu acento. )

Man, great video! Riding the bass is something I’ve often overlooked. I have a bass that has both the woofy notes and the notes that just disappear. I normally used the parallel trick you mentioned. I was wondering if you think the “Rider” plug in by waves would be sufficient in this duty or do you think it’s much better to just do it manually and write in the automation?

Question of the day: Why do my speakers sound more dynamic than my headphones? I can get a mix right on my headphones but if I switch to my monitors, transients, percs etc are all poking out. Is it because my heaphones have a bad transient response?

If, because of some reason, your bass track is in stereo are you making sure that low end (below let's say 150Hz) is in mono?

Question for the bull pen: I imagine this touches on the early point that some notes on a bass guitar will resonate differently. I have a few basses of midrange quality, and I often find that for all of them, at least one or two frets just don’t have any sub frequencies. I did an experiment where I set my subwoofer crossover at 120hz, and then walked up the fretboard. Sure enough, random notes would simply not move the sub at all. Even if they were relatively low notes, and notes even higher would trigger the sub. Any specific tips on how to deal with that? Obviously, compression, and eq won’t be suitable. One technique I’ve used is just cut all the lows out of my bass, and then add a sub synth under the bass. That’s helped me with consistency, but sacrifices tone and feel. Any other thoughts out there?
Adding a sub bass is standard procedure (although cutting your low end is questionable). Modern music asks for a lot more and more extended low end than decades ago. The solution to that is to get a better bass and have it setup correctly. With that said, your experiment is somehow faulty for a couple of reasons, but basses will have wolf notes (actually many wll argue the more they have the better the quality, I'm not sure I agree with that but, anyway) all of them, it not normal for a bass not to "trigger" a sub set to 120hz, something is off with your bass or signal chain

Hi, someone told me, that separate the low end to one track, and the other only for the mids, treat them differently, could help resolving the phase problem. Is that true? Also later you can double the track where all the mids are "living", and put there some distortion, also play with that, in verses, bridges, chorus. 5:45 "make sure you're not limiting the low end"; if I wanna use something like L2, how do I avoid applying it to the low end? I am on Cubase, so the solution may be slighly different, but generally speaking I have started to look for FX plugins that work in multiband mode, but if there is an easy way to do it with a standard like L2 without introducing phase incoherence I would love to know.

@@mixbustv The vid you made defining the levels, prices & perks, show US dollar prices 1.99, 4.99, 9.99 and 24.99, the UK sterling prices are 1.99, 4.99, 8.99 and 22.99, so as it goes up in levels it comes down a litlle, but the first 2 are the same, meaning more expensive in UK pounds. Hey look, in the new year, I'll probably just sign up to level 1 (for now) as £2/month is not a lot, I was just interested that the prices didn't match. Value is perceived, anyway, so if I honestly thought Level one was only worth £1.51, then I wouldn't pay £1.99, but I do think it's a small contribution to a channel that I like

Question about drums: How do you think it affect the sound and is it important when all lugs are not exactly at the same tension but pitch is the same at each lug?
@@mixbustv Well i was thinking if the tension are not the same at each lug, the drum head doesnt move at it's best and has some weak points. If all lugs have same tension, each point of contact make the corresponding area on the drum head vibrate the same way as the other ones. Like imagine a speaker that is not screwed properly into it's enclosure, i bet it would move not at it's best...

Make sure they ( each note ) are all at the same volume..ensures any processing has less work to do and will sound even 😁

Do you see mixing and mastering as separate processes? wouldn't it be easier for the mixing engineer to do the whole thing himself? Because we see lots of issues when different people are responsible for mixing and mastering.
@@mixbustv i saw kevin shirley complaining about mastering in his late work with iron maiden, and it made me wonder how much mixing engineers have to mix thinking about what the mastering process will do to the mix, so that motivated my question. I often catch myself thinking "mmmm i'm not going to bring these drums down because mastering is going to squeeze it" and so on. As a mixing engineer, aren't you supposed to leave the extra headroom that mastering needs to work properly? Doesn't it make your mix sound too quiet and flat? In modern production, does it still makes sense for these processes to be separated? I even saw Nolly mixing with compression and limiter on stereo out so he could have a "better notion on how his mix would sound after mastering". Mastering can dramatically change the sound of a mix, so how does the artist approve the mix without the mastering? Anyways, great channel, great videos, great content, thanks!
